Sports Premium Funding Information What is the Sports Premium?

The Government has provided funding of £150 million for the next two years for school PE and Sport. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport and will see money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.

Stalmine Primary School will receive a total of £8,410 which will be paid in two instalments.

Schools will have to spend the sports funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

How Stalmine Primary School will use the funding Our school, along with 32 other primary schools in Wyre and Fylde, has decided to buy into the full package put together by the Wyre and Fylde School Sports partnership (WFSSP). The WFSSP will co-ordinate the delivery of the package which consists of training for teachers, extra-curricular sports clubs and curriculum support. The cost of the package is £4,000.

The Governors of Stalmine Primary School agree that the money must be used so that all children benefit (regardless of sporting ability) and that staff have access to training opportunities and continued professional development.

This is how we intend to use the funding: Teacher training – the opportunity for teachers to gain a further understanding of PE delivery through attending innovative and up to date teacher training courses for KS1 and KS2.

Teacher professional development – specialist coaches will come into school for blocks of 4-5 weeks and teach whole classes their specialism. This takes place during PE lessons. The class teacher works alongside the coach, gaining valuable new knowledge.

The coach produces lesson plans which the class teacher can share with the other staff. The activities taught so far have been Gymnastics and Tag Rugby. During the summer term, the final block of lessons will be on Athletics. In addition to this, a PE specialist teacher has worked alongside one teacher on PE assessment and inclusion.

Each class has benefitted from one of these blocks.

Extra-curricular sports clubs – throughout the year, we will have a total of eleven different after school clubs, each lasting for five weeks.

The clubs are run by

experienced sports coaches and supported by a member of staff so they can increase their own skills. So far this academic year, we have had Gymnastics, Tag Rugby, Dance, Girls Football, KS1 Football, Athletics and KS1 Multi-Skills. In the summer term there will be Change4Life, Tri Golf, Cricket and Tennis.

As these clubs are provided free of charge to parents, the intention is that they increase participation in school sport. It is hoped that the wide range of activities will attract children who have not previously attended after-school sports clubs.

In addition to the package outlined above, we have used the funding to provide the following: After school Football coaching – subsidised weekly coaching for the school football team for the whole year, provided by Steve Bird from Birlow Knights Academy.

How does the Sports Premium Funding fit in with existing school sport?

The sports package has been designed to complement and enhance our current PE provision. Children in every class at Stalmine Primary School participate in 2 hours of PE a week. Teachers plan lessons from the Lancashire scheme of work for PE which includes Gymnastics, Athletics, Invasion Games, Net/Wall Games, Dance and Outdoor and Adventurous Activities. In addition to this, pupils in Year 4, 5 and 6 have weekly swimming lessons at Poulton Pool. These lessons run from February until July.

Any staff member with an enthusiasm for a particular sport is encouraged to run a club to promote skills in that activity.

How will we evaluate impact of the extra funding?

The PE subject leader is monitoring participation in the clubs supported by the Sports Premium Funding to ensure as many pupils as possible access the clubs.

In the coming academic year, the subject leader will observe lessons to ensure there is quality provision in PE and will gauge the impact of the funding. This will form part of the SIP for 2014-15.
