Pre-enrolment task for 2014 entry

AS Modern History Why do I need to complete a pre-enrolment task?

The preparation activities on the following pages must be completed, during the summer holiday period, by all students who have opted to take Modern History.

This is an essential requirement for entry on to the AS course. Your suitability for AS level study will be determined by your performance on these tasks, as well as on your GCSE grades.

Similarly, failure to complete the work and submit it by the deadline may result in your entry on to the course being refused.

When should I hand it in?

It should be posted (or dropped in) to College for the attention of Scott Townshend, to be received no later than 1st July.

How will I be given feedback on how well I have done?

You will receive your work back during your Enrolment interview. annotated and written feedback given.

The first topic we study is the struggle for Civil Rights in the USA from 1945-1968. This was a trailblazing and very recent period of American history which transformed the lives of many American citizens for the better. This exercise is designed to help you understand some of the key features within that movement. Please read all the tasks and information very carefully.

Polly, a former civil activist, reflects on why she joined King’s non-violent movement

as a young girl.

As a fellow churchgoer, joining King’s movement was a simple choice. From the moment I joined I was in awe of King’s ability to inspire those around him with his message of moral force nonviolent protest. He taught us youngsters that the only way we as a people could achieve equality was to push for integration through peaceful methods.

Although Dr. King and the various other nonviolent organisations were undoubtedly instrumental in bringing about an end to de jure segregation, much credit must be given to federal intervention from Presidents and the Supreme Court who in turn responded to our calls for equality with laws and rulings that enabled us to arrive at the promised land that King so regularly talked about in his speeches. We may have eventually arrived there without him, but the legacy of Dr King will live on forever.

Claude, a former Black Panther and radical university student, reflects on why he joined the Black Power movement in 1966.

What had that subservient Uncle Tom, Martin Luther King ever done for us? His self righteous non-violent movement neglected our communities in the Northern ghettoes for years and although we didn’t face legally entrenched segregation, we sure as hell faced de facto segregation. As a result many of my friends and I felt we had no choice but to turn to radicalism in order for the federal authorities to hear our message loud and clear. We felt at the time our violence was justified, we’d drop our violent methods when the Klan stopped lynching our brothers in the South.

Although brother Malcolm* had been slain a year prior to my conversion to the cause, my brothers and I carried on his message of separatism. We were no longer prepared to work with the white man, to beg for piecemeal reform. We wanted Black Power, and we wanted it now! *Malcolm X, Black Power revolutionary, Muslim Minister and human rights activist.

Source C – The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Established in 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) sought to gain black equality throughout the United States. Throughout the course of the Civil Rights movement, the NAACP would play a crucial role and still to this day the association campaigns on civil rights issues such as the very recent issue of same sex marriage. The poster below was produced by the NAACP during the Second World War in which America joined in December 1941.

Posters such as this were used by the NAACP to promote the cause of Civil Rights.
