Minutes of the School Council Meeting Held at Park Community Academy on Thursday 26th June 2014 1. Present: Mrs Kitchin Ella Atkinson Kayleigh Copper Charlie Meade Shaun Newby Rebecca Potter Faith Harding

2. Welcome: GK welcomed the group and explained this would be the last School Council meeting this year. GK said that in September the new classes will vote for new School Councillors so if the group have done a good job then maybe they will get voted again.

3. School Council achievements this year: GK went around the group and asked what the School Council had done to make the school better: • Megan: Ragbag recycling made over £500.

• Aaron: Pirate ship and new playground equipment for KS1 and KS2.

• Liam: New computers and headphones in the ICT Suite.

• Shaun: Healthy eating survey.

• Aaron: Stanley Park litter pick.

GK also mentioned the visit to the Magistrates Court which encouraged the pupils to stay on the good path. The playground toys for other areas including sandpit toys. A big ‘connect four’ which will be circulated around the school for all pupils to use. The School Council also took part in a debate with Blackpool Councillors and took part in interviewing new Park Community Academy staff.

4. Best thing about being a school counsellor: GK went around the group and asked what the best part of being a school councillor was and what they would make different if they could: • Liam said it’s good because they can change things around the school. Liam said it would be better if the School Council could raise more money for Senior Yard equipment.

• Megan said it’s good because of what the School Council can do. It would be better if the school could push the age to 18 and build a college onsite.

• Lewis said he liked being a School Councillor.

• Aaron said it’s been very good this year and said it would be better if the school could be painted.

• Maddison said it’s good for getting new things for pupils and it would be even better if the KS2 climbing frame could be painted.

• Faith said it would be better if there were no fighting in school.

Rebecca said it made her happy that her friends had voted for her to be in the Council.

Shaun said it helps all kids and teachers but would be even better if more pupils could be taught to be ‘Anti-Bullying Ambassadors’ so there would be more pupils outside to help at break/lunch.

GK highlighted this could be a good possibility for September.

Mirabella said she has enjoyed being a ‘Food Ambassador’ and likes wearing her badge.

GK mentioned to the group how important it was that they wear their badges in school.

Charlie said he is not normally in the School Council but he has enjoyed covering for Nickayla today.

Kyle said he has enjoyed it this year and likes talking about healthy breakfasts.

Kayleigh said she doesn’t want to be a School Councillor next year as she never gets to go on trips.

Aaron asked if the school could get a swimming pool.

GK highlighted that certain requests are realistic and some are unrealistic – everyone agreed that this was an unrealistic request as it would be costly and would require members of staff to ensure it is safe at all times. GK reminded the group that this is why the school uses Moor Park and Woodlands swimming pool.

Faith highlighted that although fizzy drinks are not allowed in school, but they can be drunk at home.

Shaun requested that pupils stop drinking energy and fizzy drinks as they are unhealthy.

Mirabelle asked if the school could get a trampoline for the yard.

GK went through with the group if this was a realistic or unrealistic request and the group agreed it was unrealistic as members of staff would have to be specially trained and could be costly.

Kayleigh requested that adults should follow the same rules as pupils and that the adults should not be allowed to drink fizzy drinks in school either.

GK said that adults going to work are very different to pupils coming to school but agreed that teachers should lead by example Liam asked if the school could be made bigger by putting a second level above the KS2 and KS3 classrooms to enable more pupils to come to Park.

Charlie requested the school buy motorbikes for the pupils to ride.

GK asked if the group thought this request was realistic or unrealistic, they all agreed it was unrealistic as it would be dangerous.

GK concluded the meeting and reminded the group that this was the last School Council meeting and thanked everyone for their hard work and hope they get voted again by their new classes in September.
