1.5 Operating Systems An operating system (or OS) is software that manages the computer system’s hardware and allows other programs to run on the computer system. An OS consists of system software that run the operations of the operating system while it boots up and while other applications are being accessed. Desktop PCs and laptops, tablets and smartphones all come with operating systems pre-installed.

The most popular desktop operating systems are Windows, Mac OSX and Linux. While Windows and Linux can be installed on standard PCs and laptops, Mac OSX can only run on Macintosh computers.

Smartphones and tablets use mobile operating systems, which combine the features of a desktop operating system with mobile features such as a touchscreen, Bluetooth, GPS and digital camera.

Mobile operating systems include Android, iOS and Windows Mobile.

These all have their differences; however, all have one common feature and that is they use a graphical user interface (or GUI) that allows the user to interact with the system using images rather than text commands.
