LO1 Use techniques to search for, store and share information Use search engine techniques to find specific information on the Internet Keywords / phrases / advanced searches / wildcards The most common search techniques used to find specific information are entering a keyword or phrase. The table below contains examples and explanations of a whole range of search techniques that can be used.

Keyword

Effective searching is best done by using keywords that are nouns and objects. Keywords can be grouped together into phrases by using quotation marks. This can help to make the search more specific. AND means ‘to only display documents that contain both / all words’. OR means ‘to display documents that contain either keyword’.

Advanced Searches using Boolean Logic

NOT can be added to a search string to make sure that documents with that word will not be displayed.

Wildcards

Number range and units can be used. Put two full stops between the numbers. Wildcards (such as *) can be used

Example

Keyword search – cheese This will return information on all types of cheese. Keywords search – “cheddar cheese” This will return information where the phrase ‘cheddar cheese’ exists. A search for “Paris” AND “Rome” AND “Madrid” will return documents that contain all three of these keywords. A search for “Paris” OR “Rome” OR “Madrid” will return all documents that contain any of these keywords. A search for “Paris” AND NOT “London” will return documents that contain the keyword Paris, but only if they don’t contain the keyword London. This search could also be written: “Paris” -London A search for 10..25 will return documents that contain any number between 10 and 25. A search for “London * 2012” will return
