Ashton Highlights Newsletter 3

Thursday 9 October 2014

Dear Parents/Carers It’s all systems go here as we gear up for one of favourite events of the school year; our Annual Open Evening. There is always a buzz around school, but the place is more vibrant than ever as staff and students put the final touches to their displays, practical sessions and musical pieces, all with the intention of impressing our visitors on Thursday. It is always exciting to be able to showcase all the things that we do well and this excitement is infectious, with the number of students wanting to be involved in Open Evening at a record high. We will be welcoming prospective year 7 and 12 students from 6.30 pm. As always, our Twitter feed will be busy all evening capturing shots of our staff, visitors and students in action in all the different subject areas. Josh McGovern and Hannah Lightowler, our Head Boy and Head Girl, will be making their first public speech of the school year to parents in the hall, so I wish them well in what I know will be a nerve racking experience! It has been another busy week in the life of our staff and students. The Astronomy session at Kirkham Grammar was successful on Monday, with our year 10 students and Mr Evans enjoying working alongside students from the grammar school. They are taking “reaching for the stars” literally! We had the British Aerospace Roadshow in school this week and their presentation certainly went with a bang! Read page 2 and you will get a flavour of the experience that our year 7 and 8 students had. It seems that many of our staff have been busy this week too, learning new skills or pursuing new hobbies. Read about Mr Wallis and Mr Day on page 3. Miss Bailey, our Beauty lead teacher, was busy too in her capacity as a EuroSkills Training Manager; read all about her experience on page 4. I know I speak on behalf of all the staff when I say that we are proud of our students. Our school family goes from strength to strength and I am particularly pleased to see that our ethos of PROUD is evident in the way students look and the way they behave. Uniform is smart (although boys please remember the knot in your tie needs to reach your top button and girls your skirts should be nearer to the knee than not) and I have had nothing but positive feedback from visitors to the school, who comment on how polite our students are. Thank you to parents for the part that you have played in this; you are as much a part of our school family as your children and when we work together that we achieve great things. As always, your support is appreciated as we strive to keep Ashton “A school to be proud of”. If you wish to discuss any issues or share a good news story, please do not hesitate to contact me either by ringing the school or by email. Best wishes, Sharon Asquith, Principal Follow us on twitter @ashtoncsc
