How to support your child’s learning at home Please ensure that your child reads for at least 10 minutes every night, and records what they have read in their reading record.

Homework Year 5 children are given learning log homework every Friday to be handed in the following week. It’s best to spread the work out through the week rather than do it all in one go. It must be completed to an acceptable standard. Maths homework will be given on a Wednesday and will be due in on a Friday.

There will usually be a maths task, spellings to learn and a Literacy or Creative Curriculum activity.

All year 5 children are expected to know their tables to 12x12 and associated division facts off by heart by now. Tables need to be practised regularly so they are not forgotten.

This is so important because rapid recall of tables means they will be able to apply the knowledge to more complex calculations.

Parent’s Evening Workshops will be held on Monday 13th October.

Mr Smith runs a drop in homework club on Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes for children who would like some help with their work.

Autumn Term 1

Creative Curriculum: Is there anybody out there?

English: We have started the term looking at poems with a structure. The children are learning what Kennings and Cinquains are and all their features in preparation for writing their own. Our next exciting unit will be’ Film Narrative’ based on sci-fi films such as ET!

PE: This half term we have fortnightly PE lessons with Miss Porter.

We also have PE as a class and are learning multi skills, including balance and agility. Proper PE kits must be worn for every PE lesson.

Our theme this half term looks at this question and helps us find out the answer making links with Science and Literacy. We will also work with our creative partner Nicole on exciting drama activities to bring our learning to life. You will be invited to our performance.

Year 5 children have an exciting trip to the Ace Centre planned where they will be watching E.T!

Maths: We are beginning our new term looking at place value. We are learning numbers up to a million! This is more challenging than in previous years and we will be applying our knowledge to help us round, order and calculate numbers and real life problems.

All children must know their times tables up to 12 x 12.

Science: At the moment we are learning about animals including humans, and about the human life cycle. Our teachers like to talk about their babies! Soon we will learn about Earth and Space and will become space explorers. Why not pick up some books about space from the library?

PSHE As part of work on Investors in Pupils, we are learning about roles and responsibilities in our class and school.

We set our own personal targets and identify our strengths, and learn that we are all valued.

Help your child by French involving Ooh la la! We will be starting to them in learn French every other Tuesday. shopping & We will begin with colours, numbers and working out animals. Please ask your child prices and what new vocabulary they have change. learned.

Art: As part of our Ourselves theme we have been carefully sketching and painting portraits in proportion. Then by carefully measuring and cutting, we have woven images together to create interesting effects.
