Newsletter April/May 2013 Dear Parents/Carers I hope you all had a good Easter holiday. It is great to have the sun shining at school and to be able to use the field for the children to play on.

Congratulations to Mrs Redhead!

I am sure you will all join me in saying “congratulations” to Mrs Redhead who is expecting a baby, due to arrive towards the end of September. I am sure she will be a wonderful mother. As Mrs Redhead will go on maternity leave we have arranged for Mrs Carter to teach year 6 next year. The governors and I are in the process of confirming other staffing arrangements for next year and parents will be informed as soon as possible.

Parent Consultations These have taken place this week. If you didn’t manage to make an appointment to see your child’s class teacher please make an appointment for a convenient date. Children learn best if school and home are working together.

School Photographer – Wednesday 24th April Anthony Wright will be in school to take photographs of the children on Wednesday 24th April. If you have a younger sibling that you would like to have photographed with a school age child please bring them into school at 8.30am. Families will be photographed on a “first come, first served” basis.

Sun lotion Please remember to put sun lotion on your children if the weather becomes hot and sunny.

Children may bring a small bottle of lotion into school to reapply at lunchtimes. The bottles should be clearly labelled with the child’s name. Children must be able to apply the lotion themselves and will not be allowed to share it with others incase of allergies.

Zoolab The above company will be coming into school on Wednesday 1st May. They are going to deliver a workshop called “Rainforest Adventure”. This will include drama and storytelling about “the world’s most exciting habitat with a tale of being stranded in the Rainforest”. The children will also be able to meet some astonishing animals. Please have a look at their website for more information: www.zoolabuk.com .

So that all the children get a chance to handle the animals the Zoolab will be in school all day and the children will be split into five different groups. If any parents would like to come in for one of the sessions (they are fascinating) please just ask at the office.

Energy Club We need some volunteers to help run an energy club for children. Full training will be given by external providers. The aim is to provide a physically active club for children to add to the other after school activities. All the kit and equipment will be provided free to school. So far we have had several children signing up to attend, but only one adult volunteer. Please, please could you have a think about it – it will only mean about half an hour per week.

Ecokidz bags All children took home recycling bags last week. Please try to fill these as they will pay a lot money for old, good quality clothes, shoes, handbags, soft toys, bed linen, costume jewellery and small bric-a-brac. All the money raised will be spent on extra activities for the children during our Arts Week which will take place in the week commencing Monday 8th July. Please bring the filled bags (and extra bin liners if necessary) into school on Friday 3rd May. SATs week The year 6 standard assessment tests will take place during the week 13th – 17th May. It is essential that all year 6 children are in school for that week. A timetable showing when each test takes place follows: 13th May Reading test

14th May Grammar, spelling and punctuation

15th May Mental mathematics test Mathematics test A

16th May Mathematics test B

Please make sure that your child has breakfast on these days and a bottle of still water to take into the test room. We will provide toast and a drink for them at break-time. Toast will also be available in the mornings if required. Please do not give the children high energy sports drinks before school as these do not help with concentration. All tests take place in the mornings and the children will do a variety of practical activities in the afternoons. It would help the children if they all had early nights during SATs week.

Assessment Weeks Assessment weeks for the children from y1 to y5 will take place in June and July. Teacher assessments take place all year and will have been shared with parents during parent consultations. These are the end of year assessments, which are used to back up teacher assessment and are used to help set targets for the following term and year. Assessments will be shared with parents in the end of year reports and an opportunity will be provided for parents to discuss them with teachers.

Year 4 visit to Sizergh Barn Year 4 will be visiting Sizergh Barn on Tuesday 14th May to take part in the “Growing Well” project. This enhances the environmental work that we do in school. It is always a really informative and enjoyable day.

Science Week This will take place in the week commencing 20th May. Lots of exciting scientific activities and experiments have bee planned for the afternoons during that week. Again, if anybody would like to volunteer to come in and help with the activities you would be most welcome to do so.

May Half-term 2

Roose Community Primary School Information for Parents

We break up for half-term on Friday 24th May. School will finish at the normal time of 3.15pm.

Next half term and Sports Day As I write this letter the teachers are planning an interesting schedule of visits for the next half of term. I will send out dates as soon as possible with details and costs. Advanced warning of Sports Day – this will be held on Friday 7th June. Hopefully the weather will be warmer and not raining so that we can avoid having to postpone it!

Jewellery in school Please can all parents remember that jewellery is not allowed in school. This is primarily for the children’s safety. The only exception to this is a pair of plain stud earrings for children who have pierced ears. However these should be removed for PE as soon as the six week limit for new piercings is over.
