Principal’s message We are a high-achieving sixth form, giving our students an excellent springboard to success. We educate the whole student, providing all with excellent teaching and opportunities for growth and personal development. We are recognised by Ofsted as an outstanding sixth form. We are relatively small in size. This means that we are a close and caring community of staff and students. We serve a wide area which includes Blackpool and all the major towns and villages of the Fylde and Wyre districts. I hope you will want to visit us and find out more.

Inspiring learning First Class facilities Blackpool Sixth boasts first class facilities and state-of-the-art, professional standard equipment in all areas and ICT including the latest Apple Mac computers throughout the college. In August 2011, we opened a 300 seat theatre and drama studios which complement “The Frame�, our open-plan studio for visual arts. This followed the creation of new science laboratories and new classrooms throughout the campus. There are also two large learning resource areas, a large sports hall and gym, social areas and a variety of dining options including a Starbucks coffee shop.
Choice Blackpool Sixth offers an exceptionally wide range of courses. From Further Maths or Spanish to Travel and Tourism or Financial Studies, there is something for everyone
Specialist teaching All our teaching staff are highly qualified specialists who are experts in teaching 16 to 19 year olds. They treat you as individuals and give you all the support you need to reach your full potential. Many of our staff are also examiners for their subjects and this helps them make sure that you are excellently prepared for your exams.

Developing mind and character Moving from High School to Sixth Form means new freedom and independence. We will develop your skills to manage your learning, plan your time and find your own solutions. This is an ideal preparation for university and the world of work. We always ensure that you are well supported in your studies and other aspects of your life in Blackpool Sixth. You will have a Personal Tutor who will guide you through your first year and provide specialist advice when you need to select the next stage in your career. There are also a range of other support staff who can provide you with a listening ear and expert advice and guidance. They include Careers Advisers, Learning Mentors, Counsellors and Student Services Advisers. Our Additional Support team provide individual assistance for any students who require help with any learning or medical need.
Personal development We offer a huge range of over 70 enrichment activities including team and individual sports, an exciting outdoor pursuits programme and, for the adventurous, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award Scheme. There are bands, languages, photography, the Debating Society, community service and work experience options. There are opportunities to travel abroad on ski trips, music tours and projects in countries as diverse as the US and India. Whatever your interests, you will find our sixth form a friendly and fun environment. Your days here will provide you with enough great memories for a lifetime.
Building your future Blackpool Sixth Form students are SUCCESSFUL students. Our A level pass rate in 2012 is above the national average at over 98% and many of our students achieve a string of top level passes. In 2012, over half of the qualifications achieved were top grades (A*, A, B or equivalent) including 273 A* A-level and distinction star BTEC grades. Every year a number of students progress to Oxford and Cambridge and some 80% of students progress to university and other higher education courses. Support at Blackpool Sixth Strong pastoral care, support and guidance is extremely important in contributing to students’ success. Your Personal Tutor, will offer advice and guidance to help you settle in quickly and enjoy your time with us. Regular individual reviews of progress are a key element of this support. Your Personal Tutor will also help you to make the right decisions about career choices and applications for higher education or employment. Tutor groups are organised into departments, each of which is led by a Head of Department. If any issues arise or you need advice, both your Personal Tutor and your Head of Department are available to help you.
Student Services Trained and experienced staff are available to help you overcome any problem you may have during your time at Blackpool Sixth. Financial support, Learning Mentors, Careers Advisers, and Counsellors are all available to help you succeed in your studies. A MultiFaith Worker is also available to support the spiritual needs of all students, whatever their religion or faith.

Career Advice and Guidance Our FYi Futures Team are experienced advisers who help students to progress successfully. The careers service includes: • Visits to businesses and careers conferences • Guest speakers from a range of professions • Organised work experience on request • Help in producing an effective CV • Practice interviews The Connexions Service has Personal Advisers based in the sixth form. They offer students access to a wide range of careers information, advice and guidance. Most of our students will be looking to go on to university (Higher Education). Our Higher Education Programme provides a step-by-step guide through the process of researching options and making successful applications. We have specialist programmes available for those going into medicine or teaching and for students looking to apply for a place at Oxford or Cambridge.

How do we keep parents and carers informed? In September, you will receive an invitation to a Parents’ Welcome Evening so that you can meet your son or daughter’s Personal Tutor and learn more about the courses they are studying. Parents’ Consultation Evenings are held each year when parents and carers have the opportunity to meet with individual subject Tutors. Progress Review Reports and Attendance Reports are sent to parents and carers regularly throughout the year. Parents and carers are welcome to contact their daughter or son’s Personal tutor or Head of Department at any time. The Personal Tutor or Head of Department will also get in touch whenever necessary and particularly if there is a concern about a student’s work, well-being, attendance or punctuality.
Parent Portal You will also have access to The Parent Portal which is an online tool giving you direct access to your daughter’s or son’s up-to-date attendance and progress data. We do value parental support for both the individual student and the sixth form as a whole. Your views are very important to us and do affect the way in which we support the students’ learning.

Financial support for you There are four types of financial support available to students in 2012-13: 1. Guaranteed Bursary of £1,200 for students in the most need 2. Income-assessed Bursary of £700 for students who meet the Free School Meals criteria

3. Subsidised Transport for students who live more than three miles from college 4. Hardship Fund, an emergency fund, for students who experience short-term financial hardship who are struggling to meet costs associated with sixth form * These figures are based on financial support available to new students in 2012/13 and may change for new students in 2013/14.
Save money on the cost of transport Blackpool Sixth recognises that the cost of transport is a major concern for some students and their families. We work with local transport providers to offer big travel savings for students living outside a three-mile radius of the college. This scheme not only helps with transport costs to and from Blackpool Sixth but also provides unlimited travel throughout the day, including evenings and weekends. Bus service to and from Freckleton, Warton, Lytham and St Annes For students living in the Fylde area, Blackpool Sixth provides its own affordable bus service to and from Freckleton, Warton, Lytham and St Annes and works with local transport providers to offer big travel savings for students. International visits In 2011/12 students took part in overseas visits to USA, France, Germany, Greece, Geneva and Spain as part of their courses.
Thirty-five A level Classical Civilisation students spent five days in Athens and Delphi.
Career Academy success More than 30 talented young employees of the future took part in our employer-backed Career Academy programme in 2011/12. The Career Academy boosts students’ employability skills by giving them real life experiences of the workplace.

Physics students ventured to CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research which houses the Large Hadron Collider.
Young at Art exhibition and fashion show Art students have the opportunity to showcase their work to art and design lovers from the Fylde Coast in exhibitions and galleries in Lytham, Thornton and Blackpool and in our annual Young at Art exhibition and fashion show.
Performing arts and music events Blackpool Sixth continues to be the most exciting place in the area to study performing arts and music. Our students have the opportunity to perform in concerts, shows and events in our new theatre and in the community.
A level German students spent seven days experiencing German culture whilst living with host families in Oberhausen and completing work experience in local schools.

A world of opportunities Efforts for charity Students took part in a number of fundraising events for local charities in 2011/12 including Cancer Research, UNICEF, International Women’s Day, Children in Need and Comic Relief.
Go Green Week The Eco Action Group contributed to the Blackpool Sixth working towards Eco Schools Green Flag status by organizing Go Green Week - a week of activities on an environmental theme.
National recognition for student magazine In June 2012 the Blackpool Sixth student magazine, Sixth Sense, achieved success in the Shine Media Awards. Out of 170 schools, 300 category entries and 65 final nominations Sixth Sense won three commendations, the Professional Publishers’ Association prize for Best Cover and overall title of Best Magazine.

Student awards Over 90 students were awarded for high achievements in their courses and success in extra-curricular activities such as sport, performing arts, enterprise and other contributions to the college community at the annual Student Awards Ceremony.
Leavers’ ball
Duke of Edinburgh at Blackpool Sixth
The Leavers’ Ball is held towards the end of the summer term and is for all Upper Sixth students. The event is always enjoyable and a great chance to say farewell to fellow classmates. The 2012 Leavers’ Ball was held at the De Vere Village at Herons’ Reach and those students who attended all commented on what a great time they had.
More than 50 students took part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award in 2011/12 with 40 students successfully completing their Gold Qualifying expedition in Scotland.

Sport and enrichment As part of Blackpool Sixth’s commitment to developing and broadening your skills and enjoyment of sixth form life, we offer a varied programme of additional activities. Some of these activities can lead to a qualification or sixth form certificate so you will be required to be committed and dedicated right through the programme. Many activities and related workshops are designed to enhance UCAS applications and employability skills. These will provide opportunities for you to meet like-minded people and develop a wide range of skills and interests.

Sport Blackpool Sixth Form offers a wide range of sport and other physical activities and the majority of our students choose to participate in one or more of them. Many take part for exercise and enjoyment alone, whilst others are members of one or more of our successful sixth form teams. Team sports at Blackpool Sixth have never been stronger. We run teams in badminton, basketball (male and female), hockey (mixed), netball, rugby (male and female), football (male and female). Many of these teams compete in the British Colleges’ League, the North West Colleges League, and National Schools’ competitions, which gives students the opportunity to compete at a high level and be selected for British Colleges’ national squads.

Basketball Academy The Basketball Academy is one of the top academies within the North West, teaching players not only the game of basketball but also the important life skills off the court. In recent years the Academy has seen a lot of success in local and national competitions for both the boys’ and girls’ teams. The Basketball Academy is linked with Blackpool Lights Basketball Club, who hold the Clubmark Award with England Basketball.
Football Academy The Football Academy is a new addition to our Performance and Excellence programme. Our qualified coaches will follow a successful curriculum to foster the development of individuals and the team as a whole. This team will compete against the best opposition in the North West of England on a regular basis. Good links with local FA Chartermark clubs will enable students to access high level facilities for training and matches.
Netball Academy The Netball Academy provides girls with the opportunity to train in an excellent environment as well as further their education. Our aims are to improve the technical skills of the players, to progress players’ understanding of netball and to increase participation in the sport. Students benefit from links with England Netball North West Development Officer, and with Blackpool Netball Club
I have enjoyed taking part in matches and competitions with the Football Academy and it was a great achievement to finish the season as the best team in the North West.

Sport and enrichment Rugby League and Rugby Union Academies The Rugby Academies allow promising young players (male and female) to follow a structured training programme in a professional environment, whilst studying for A levels or BTEC courses. The college has invested in the Rugby Academies this year and we now have a purpose built on site rugby ground. Our academies are linked with local governing body accredited clubs.
Richard Grocott (former student of KEQMS) was called up to play for the North West of England rugby squad in 2012. Richard studies Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and is also a member of the Basketball Academy.

Career aspirations and work experience You can choose an enrichment course that will enhance your career choice, start a new hobby or develop an existing interest. There are the Humanities Society, Debating, the Sixth Sense magazine and many more. Our Work Placement Officer will help place you with an employer. This experience will give valuable insights into your chosen career. We offer many employability workshops, covering topics such as CV and personal statement writing.

International Students
Blackpool Sixth welcomes applications from international students. We have a growing number of students who come from outside the UK to study with us. In recent years, we have welcomed students from many different countries including Azerbaijan, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Italy, Lithuania, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Norway, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Our international students come to Blackpool Sixth mainly to obtain A levels and/or other advanced level qualifications which are highly regarded and are the passports to University study in the UK and in many other countries worldwide. Blackpool Sixth enjoys excellent relations with universities all around the UK, and especially good links with local top universities such as the University of Lancaster and the University of Central Lancashire that are a relatively short drive away. We have a very good track record in supporting students with their applications to universities and have special programmes to support applicants to Oxford and Cambridge and to Medical Schools.

The Sixth Form has a very strong commitment to being an international community and we are always looking to forge strong links with other parts of the world. Our overseas students are full members of our sixth form and enjoy the same opportunities and facilities as all our other students. There are social activities organised for international students throughout the sixth form year including special meals and visits to local attractions. Blackpool Sixth can also help arrange high quality host family accommodation for you during your time studying here. Details of course fees and estimated costs for accommodation and living expenses are provided on our website www.blackpoolsixth.ac.uk. Students from EU or European Economic Area countries will normally qualify for free tuition. When you are ready to apply, use the on-line application form or the form included with this prospectus. Choosing the right course How to choose? Blackpool Sixth has a wide range of courses on offer. This allows you to select courses which exactly match your interests, abilities and future plans. There are four main programmes we offer. By “programme”, we mean ways of combining your choices in order to put together a set of courses which will meet your needs and set you up perfectly for the next stage. All programmes include Personal Tutor sessions, an “additional studies” component and an enrichment choice. If you already have a career in mind or are looking for some inspiration then take a look at our recommended study pathways for a range of professions and career areas. These are available on our website and include advice on which subjects to take and opportunities for the future.
The A level programme This well-known programme provides an excellent preparation for university entry. It is also extremely flexible as you can choose almost any combination of AS courses. In year 1 (Lower Sixth), you choose 4 AS courses. Many students on this programme will also study General Studies as their “additional studies” course. In year two, you study the second part of your courses, called A2. This will complete your programme together with your Personal Tutor sessions and additional studies course. Which A levels should I choose? This is really down to you. The best advice is to think carefully about what your plans are after A levels and choose courses which help you achieve this goal. For example, if you are thinking about maybe applying for a university course in a particular subject e.g. medicine, then this will mean that you’d need to choose certain subjects - in this case ones like Biology and Chemistry. For many Higher Education courses and jobs, the exact choice of A levels is not too important but it’s always worth checking out with your Careers Teacher or a Connexions advisor.

If you don’t have a specific goal for after A levels, then you are best to choose subjects which both interest you and which you feel you will do well in. As part of your enrolment to Blackpool Sixth, we will talk through your course choices with you, so don’t worry if you are finding it hard to choose! What kind of GCSE grades will I need? Normally, for our 4 A level programme, we require at least 2 GCSEs at B grade and 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English or Maths. The B grades (or above) need to be related to the subjects you wish to take at AS level e.g. a B grade in English is normally required for “essay” based subjects such as English, History, Law. B grades in Double Science are required for our AS courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. What if I need to re-sit my Maths or English? Clearly it is much better if you are able to pass both your English and Maths first time. Both are essential qualifications for university entry and most career routes these days. If you do need to re-sit one of them, this can be fitted into your programme. This may take the place of one of your AS options. We are also able to offer a single Science option for those who need this for going into areas such as nursing or primary teaching – this is normally taken in the second year of your courses.

Choosing the right course Gifted and Talented Programme
This programme is for students who achieve mainly A* and A grades at GCSE. In Year 1 (Lower Sixth) you choose 4 AS courses. You will also take an exciting course called AS Critical Thinking (see page 67) which helps you extend your reasoning and analysis skills. It is well respected by top universities as evidence of your higher level abilities. You will also receive an individualised package of support to help you with applications to the more selective university courses such as Oxbridge and Medical courses. There are specific tutor groups for gifted and talented students to ensure that you benefit from spending time with other very high ability students. Please note that you do not need to apply specifically for the Gifted and Talented Programme. You will be advised at enrolment on the basis of your predicted grades if it is likely that you will be eligible for entry onto the programme.
The Applied Programme (BTEC) This programme will appeal to those of you who want a more work-related focus to your studies than the traditional A level courses offer. These courses are all much more coursework-based than A levels, in fact BTECs have no public exams at all. With this option, the core of your programme is an advanced applied qualification in one of a range of occupational areas. This qualification will count the same as two or three A levels and is studied over two years. If you are taking the two A level equivalent option then you will need to also choose one or two AS levels in the first year which you will follow to A2 level in the second year. You may also take an Additional Studies course related to your main studies (see page 67 for details). If you need to take a GCSE re-sit in English or Maths, then this will normally take the place of one of your choices. What are BTEC Level 3 Diplomas? BTEC Level 3 Diplomas are practical, work related courses. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. There are no public exams. BTEC Level 3 Diplomas are equivalent to two A levels. The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A levels. The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma is worth one A level over two years. You can use these courses

either to move into employment or to go into Higher Education. They are very well known and respected in business and industry. Is this programme only for those definitely interested in particular jobs? No. These are very well respected qualifications which will help you succeed in a wide variety of different career and study routes. The job areas which the courses relate to are very broad e.g. IT is used in most jobs nowadays. The main thing to think about when choosing this programme is that it offers more practical, “hands-on” learning than the academic A levels. If this is the way you like to work then you will get a lot out of these courses. What kind of GCSE grades will I need? As BTEC Level 3 Diplomas are advanced courses, we generally require 5 A*- C passes of C grade or above (or equivalent) including English or Maths. Your passes must cover at least three different subject areas. If you have taken courses such as BTEC Level 2 Diplomas at school, these are a very good preparation for our higher level BTEC courses. We will normally expect you to pass these at Merit level if you wish to progress in that particular subject area.
The Level 2 (Dual Pathway) Programme This programme is designed for those of you who want to move on to sixth form but who may not to get 5 A - C’s at GCSE at this stage. The Level 2 programme offers you the perfect chance to improve your skills and take highly respected qualifications in a range of job related areas. When you have completed this one-year programme, you will be ready for the next step which could be either the A level Programme or the Applied Programme. See page 69 for more details of this programme and the subject choices. What kind of grades do I need to get onto the Level 2 Programme? The course is designed for students who have at least 4 D grades at GCSE.

There are several ways to apply to join us as a student:
We interview all potential sixth form applicants during Year 11. You will receive details of your interview shortly after you return your application form. The interview might take place at your school or at Blackpool Sixth, depending on the school you are attending. Don’t worry, the interview is not a formal one; it simply gives you the chance to discuss your application and ask any questions you might have about the courses that interest you and about the sixth form in general. It also gives those students who come into sixth form the opportunity to see students and staff during a normal working day. This gives a good idea of the activities going on here and a feel for the atmosphere.

FAQS What is the timetable like for a typical day? A typical day starts at 8.45am and finishes at 3.55pm, except on a Thursday when the day ends at 4.10pm. Lessons lasts for 70 minutes, you could have up to 5 lessons during the day. However, you will be allocated study periods on your timetable for independent learning. This makes for a varied and personalised timetable. Wednesday afternoons, after 2pm, are set aside for enrichment and other activities with very few timetabled lessons.
Do different courses have different entry requirements? Blackpool Sixth has an overall minimum entry requirement; this depends upon the type of programme you choose to study. There are some specific requirements to gain entry on some of our courses, details of these can be found with the information for each department.
Do I have to have taken a subject at GCSE to study it at A level? Not necessarily as there are a greater number of subjects available for you to study at A level. Many of these subjects you will never have studied before. If you wish to continue studying a subject you have studied at GCSE you must have passed it with at least a grade C. See the information under “Specific Requirements� for individual courses for more information.

What is the interview like? Once you have applied you will have an interview. This is really an informal chat to discuss you choice of subjects and will often be with a small group of other applicants, usually from your school. One to one interviews can be arranged by contacting the School Liaison Team.
What does the offer of a place mean? After we have interviewed you, we are usually able to offer you a place. This offer will be conditional and will depend on whether you achieve the grades required.
Can I change the subjects I have applied for? You can change the subjects you have applied for at any time before enrolment day. You will be given plenty of opportunity to gather information during your final year, through presentations in school, Open Evenings, interviews and the Pre-Sixth Form Taster Day, as well as from the website and prospectus.
Transport - Do we get bus passes if we live quite far away? Yes, there are reduced price bus passes available to those who live beyond three miles from Blackpool Sixth. For more information on subsidised transport visit www. blackpoolsixth.ac.uk/finance.
Is it true that financial support is available to help me stay in education after 16? If you choose to study at Blackpool Sixth, we will do everything possible to support you. After tuition in a number of basic techniques students are encouraged to develop their knowledge in a highly personalised way. LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) MTG C/D, D, D/E, E for performing arts students The LAMDA course is ideal if you want to improve your performance skills in acting. You will develop specific acting skills eg how to communicate a character. Also you will grow in self confidence and improve your public speaking, projection and stage presence. You will learn to speak two monologues for each grade, exploring the character, style of play and original performance conditions. You will perform each monologue in front of an examiner. LAMDA students will be entered for Grade 6 with the intention of progressing onto grades 7 and 8. The LAMDA course offers UCAS points and is widely accepted at many universities and colleges.

Additional Studies Sports Leadership Award MTG C/D, D, D/E, E for sports and PE students This is a nationally recognised leadership qualification, which prepares you to be able to independently lead small groups in sport and recreational activities. Study on this award has a practical focus and you learn by doing. In addition to the 8 units to be followed, this award requires students to participate in a minimum of 10hrs of voluntary leadership outside of the college setting. Successful completion of this award may lead you to the Higher Sports Leaders Award. This involves 8 units of study and a minimum of 30 hrs of voluntary leadership. There are 30 UCAS tariff points awarded for candidates who successfully complete the qualification.
Extended Project Qualification MTG C, CD, D, DE, E If you are not taking any of the above additional studies courses, you will be entered in your second year of college for the Extended Project Qualification. This qualification is equivalent to an AS level qualification and earns UCAS points. You will be allocated a supervisor to help support you investigate and complete a project of your choice. This will give you an excellent opportunity to enhance your research skills, in an area where you may have a particular interest. Part of the project is to keep a learning log, where you can record you plans, actions and reflections as the project progresses. You will have a choice in how to present your findings, ranging from written reports to producing some physical artefact.

It allows you to progress smoothly onto a full range of advanced level applied programmes. You will combine two BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate courses (worth two GCSEs each) or take a BTEC Level 2 Diploma (worth 4 GCSEs). You will also take GCSE Maths and/or English if you have not obtained a C grade already.
What will I study? This new programme allows you to select two applied study pathways from the list above and in doing so, you keep your options open for your next step. You will improve your skills and increase your knowledge and understanding in key career areas.
Assessment The BTEC Level 2 courses are assessed by a mixture of coursework and controlled assessment. GCSE Mathematics and English have an examination at the end of the course.

What will I study? You will learn how to use IT tools to communicate and exchange information safely, securely and effectively with different audiences.

You will also consider the impacts of IT on your personal life as well as in the workplace. Next you will look at the available job roles in IT and the characteristics employers look for in the IT industry.

Contact us and Travel directions Travel Directions Blackpool Sixth is located on Blackpool Old Road in the Highfurlong district of Blackpool approximately three miles from the coast and close to the town of Poulton-le-Fylde. If travelling from the motorway, leave the M6 at junction 32 and join the M55. Exit the M55 at junction 3 (Kirkham) and take the A585 northward. Turn left at the fi rst major junction to join the A586 going west toward Blackpool. At the next set of lights bear left, continuing west. After two miles turn right onto Blackpool Old Road and a quarter of a mile or so along Blackpool Old Road, you will fi nd Blackpool Sixth on your right.
