Maths:

The children will start the Spring term with multiplying and dividing 3 & 4 digit numbers, by a 2-digit number (2345 x 56) using the strategies they are familiar with. They will work on problem solving with multiplication, then division methods. This will include short division and dividing a 4digit number by a one-digit number. After this, we will then move onto fractions (AGAIN!) This will involve multiplication and finding fractions of amounts.

Spanish: La Clase/The Classroom

With Señor Asensi, the children will recall from memory a selection of nouns and indefinite articles for common classroom objects, learn how to use the negative in Spanish and finally, describe what we have and do not have in our pencil case and respond to simple classroom commands in Spanish.

Year 5 – Spring 1

Geography:

English:

During this half term, the children will be using a quality text called, 'Where Once We Stood'. It is all about the moon landings between 1969 and 1972. From this, they will produce a number of pieces of writing, including: an exploration narrative, a formal report, some poetry, a setting description, a character study and some short dialogue. We will also focus on the grammar that is required in Year 5. A focus on spelling and handwriting will also be in our English provision.

For our second Geography topic of Year 5, the children will be learning: ‘Would you like to live in the desert?’. They will learn about the names of many countries and major cities in Europe and North and South America, the location of key physical features in countries studied, name and describe some of the world’s vegetation belts and know some negative impacts of humans on the environment.

PE: This half term, we will have a specialist WLSP coach who will lead our children in OAA (Outdoor & Adventurous Activity). Children will learn a range of skills using outdoor spaces and improve their team building skills. Teacher led sessions will be Health and Fitness.

RE: During this half term, the children will be unpicking what it means to be a Muslim in Britain today.

PSHE: ‘Being Responsible’

They will recognise why they should take action when someone is being unkind and describe caring and considerate behaviour.

Music: ‘Composing and Chords’

Our focus element is dynamics. Children in Year 5 will participate in djembe drumming workshops, listen to authentic performances and begin to compose using the instruments, writing their music down. Further key musical symbols will be introduced and performance and music reading skills will be used.

Art: ’Retrofuturism’

This unit focuses on understanding retrofuturism, developing skills in evaluating images and creating art through various drawing processes, including collagraph printmaking. It emphasises the development of pupils' independent artistic skills and their ability to generate, test, and refine ideas in their sketchbooks, leading to a final piece of artwork. Use this unit hub to inform your medium-term plan and to navigate to related resources.

Year 5 – Spring 1

Computing: In Computing this half term, pupils will begin their new topic

Data handling: Mars Rover. They will be researching and calculating the distance from Earth to Mars and will explain how the Mars Rover transmits the data back to Earth. They will identify input, processing and output on the Mars Rovers. They will also read binary numbers and grasp the concept of binary addition.

Science: ‘Earth & Space’

We will be learning all about spherical bodies, the movement of the moon and features of the planets. We will learn all about the famous Galileo Galilei, work scientifically pattern seeking and then investigate day and night.
