Maths: This half-term, the children will work on a range of mathematical areas. They start on decimals and percentages, learning equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages, how to round, compare and order them. They will then explore the topic of Area and Perimeter, where they will learn how to find both relating to rectangles, rectilinear shapes, compound shapes and polygons. Statistics will be the last unit of work before Easter: they will practise drawing and reading line graphs, and interpreting tables/timetables.

Science: This half-term in Science, children will revisit Properties and Changes of Materials, exploring reversible and irreversible changes through hands-on investigations. They will then apply their learning in a thermal insulator challenge, designing and creating a cup using the most effective material to keep liquids warm. This practical activity will develop their scientific reasoning and problem-solving skills
English: Over the next six weeks, the children will be reading a range of Ancient Greek myths and legends. They will be exploring the features of persuasive texts and writing their own persuasive texts, linked to the Ancient Greeks. They will also attempt to write some incredibly realistic setting descriptions. The children will be learning how to use causal conjunctions, apostrophes for possession, subjunctive verbs, colons to link related clauses, similes, metaphors and personification too.
History: For our next History topic of Year 5, the children will be learning all about Ancient Greece! They will be exploring the civilisation of the Ancient Greeks. They will compare similarities and differences between Athens and Sparta, before learning about the famous wars and battles of the time. They will learn all about the Greek Gods! We will also have a full experience day from a fabulous company called, ‘The Past Presents’.
DT: This half-term in DT, children will learn about beef production and explore ways to enhance a traditional recipe’s nutrition. They will then apply their skills by preparing and cooking a modified Bolognese sauce, making informed ingredient choices.
Computing: The children will be using Scratch, a block-based programming language where they can create their own projects. The children will write complex algorithms, debug coding and write code for a specific effect.
Music: This half term’s focus element of music is timbre. During this half term, the children will listen to and appraise many examples of Jazz/blues music and will be introduced to improvisation and the walking bass line.
PE: This half term, the children will participate in dance lessons and net and wall games. In dance, the children will perform fluent dances of different styles in pairs and groups, with varying direction, space and rhythm. For net and wall games, the children will focus on tennis, developing the backhand stroke and swing technique to return the ball.
Year 5 – Spring 2
PSHE: During SRE week (w/b 17th March), the children are taught about the physical, emotional and social changes at puberty, which includes personal hygiene. They will be able to identify why our bodies go through puberty, develop coping strategies to help with the different stages and identify who and what can help them during this time. More information regarding this week, will be communicated nearer the time!
RE: Children will explore the topic "What Would Jesus Do?", considering how his teachings and values apply to life in the 21st century. They will examine Jesus' mission statement, what mattered to him and key values such as love, justice, fairness, generosity, and greed. Through discussion and reflection, they will consider how these principles can guide their own actions and choices today.
Spanish: With Señor Asensi, the children will practise ordering a selection of foods, drinks and snacks from a Spanish menu, before role playing the ‘real life’ scenario in the setting of a café. It is here where children will also be able to practise common phrases learnt earlier in the year. E.g hello, thank you & goodbye!
