You have achieved a combination of C and D grades at GCSE level.

You want to acquire a specialist work-related qualification.

You want to gain a basic understanding of the employment opportunities, job requirements, and working practices available in the media industry.

You want to start building the technical skills and knowledge relevant to a particular sector of the media industry you are interested in, including video production and photography.

You want to develop an understanding of how media products are designed and produced for specific audiences or markets.

You enjoy applying your knowledge to the real business world by visiting businesses to find out to find out how they operate.

What will I learn?

Photography Techniques

Research for Creative Media Production You will develop skills in the main research methods and techniques used within the creative media sector through researching an existing media product and carrying out research for one of your own production projects.

Creative Media Production Project You will combine all of the skills learned throughout the year in to create a promotional DVD and photographic exhibition.

Communication Techniques You will develop your communication skills.

This covers oral and written, formal and informal communication using the formats and technologies needed to communicate effectively in the media sector.

The Creative Media Sector You will learn about the creative media sector and the ways in which the industry is organised. This will develop an understanding of specific job roles in the industry and how people are recruited into these roles.

Media Audiences and Products You will be encouraged to think about how media products are created. You will develop your understanding of how the media industries think about their audiences, how these industries create products for specific audiences and how they themselves understand media products.

Video Production You will have an opportunity to create a video production whilst learning about the different production phases – pre-production, production and post-production. You will also reflect on the final product and your working practices.

Advertising Production You will be introduced to the way advertisements are created and the ways in which they work. You will study existing advertisement techniques in a variety of formats – e.g. television, film, radio, internet, press.

You will then plan and produce an advertisement of your own in a chosen medium.

You will have the chance to develop your photography skills. You will learn how to get ideas for photographic images, produce images and produce final prints.

You will also explore past and current photographic practice, including techniques and styles, in order to inform your own photographic work.

We have an extensive range of books available in the library which provide as a great source of information for the course. The BTEC textbook follows the specification closely, so you can easily see what you have covered and quickly find the information you need. ICT resources are available in all teaching rooms.

The course is supported by the Learning Support team and learning mentors and teaching staff operate an ‘open door’ policy.

How will I be assessed?

There are no exams for this course – all assessment is through set assignments which you submit at various points through the year

What activities can I get involved in?

The College has lots of exciting enrichment and C.V building opportunities including the chance to earn the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, learn a new skill, learn a language, join a club, take up or develop a sport or take on a new challenge. Where does it lead?

A BTEC qualification in Media will help prepare you for the challenges that lie ahead and help with that all-important first step by enabling you to prove that you have the commitment, skills and practical experience to succeed.

You may choose to go on to study Media further here at College. We offer AS/A2 Level in Media Studies which can lead to Higher Education.
