You must have achieved at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including at least a grade C in English Language.

You want to start to understand how political processes work and then begin to make your own informed decisions on political issues.

You must take an active interest in politics, political issues and processes.

You want to study a subject that is dynamic and contemporary.

You enjoy debate and discussion.

You want to develop your writing skills, ability to develop a reasoned argument and consider different viewpoints.

What will I learn?

AS Year Contemporary Politics of the UK You will learn about the different political parties, party systems and pressure groups in the United Kingdom as well as electoral systems, parliamentary elections and voting behaviour.

You will also explore concepts such as democracy, participation and representation and develop your awareness of current political developments.

Contemporary Government of the UK You will develop your knowledge and understanding of the composition, role and power of the legislative and executive branches of government in the UK as well as of the judiciary, the constitution, rights of the individual and the European Union.

A2 Year Political Ideas and Concepts You will examine the theories relating to the nature of democratic systems, the role of the state, the process by which governments are able to rule and the relationship between the individual and the state in society. You will also learn about the central beliefs behind a range of political ideologies and start to compare them.

Political Ideas and Concepts in Practice You will work from an externally provided starting point to produce critical studies, observation, experimentation, development work and a final piece within a given time period.

How will I be assessed?

All assessment for this course is through written examination.

What activities can I get involved in?

You will have opportunities to expand your learning beyond the classroom by taking part in a number trips and visits during the course. You will also have the chance to construct an argument and practise your debating skills by taking part in a Debating competition organised by the Rotary Club.

The College has lots of exciting enrichment and C.V building opportunities including the chance to earn the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, learn a new skill, learn a language, join a club, take up or develop a sport or take on a new challenge. Where does it lead?

Studying Politics will develop critical analytical skills and writing abilities and as such is very well respected by Universities as a rigorous subject.

It is useful if you wish to study History or any Social Science, such as Economics or Business at University. It is particularly useful for those interested in careers in Law, Journalism and, of course, Politics.

Some students may wish to go on to study Politics in Higher Education. This will allow you to seek employment in a range of politically-related environments including the civil service, local government, the European Commission, working with an MP or MEP, in the headquarters of one the leading political parties, pressure groups and think tanks. Even if you choose another subject, Politics allows you to acquire a range of key skills and attributes that will be highly prized by employers in management, marketing, public relations, retail, accountancy and banking.
