What will I learn?

The Impact of Diet on Health

Communication in Health and Social care You will explore your own ability to communicate and take part in group work where you will consider barriers to communication that may exist.

Individual Rights in Health and Social Care You will look at the key values held by many Health and Social Care practitioners and the legislation and policies that guide them.

Individual needs in Health and Social Care You will focus on the everyday needs of individuals in society and look at the factors which affect their health. You will make a plan to meet the needs of a specific client.

You will look at dietary needs of individuals at different life stages. You will consider the effects of unbalanced diets on health and examine health and hygiene issues.

The course will include group work and individual learning. You will examine case studies and take part in practical class exercises.

We have an extensive range of books available in the library which provide as a great source of information for the course. The BTEC textbook follows the specification closely, so you can easily see what you have covered and quickly find the information you need. ICT resources are available in all teaching rooms.

The course is supported by the Learning Support team and learning mentors and teaching staff operate an ‘open door’ policy.

Ensuring Safe Environments in Health and Social Care You will learn about potential hazards in health and social care environments and cover main principles of health and safety legislation. You will learn about the use of risk assessment processes.

Vocational Experience in a Health or Social Care Setting You will complete 60 hours of work experience and receive feedback. You will be encouraged to reflect on this experience and develop your practical skills.

Human Lifespan Development You will look at development and characteristics of each life stage from infancy to older adulthood. You will cover the factors which affect development.

Creative and Therapeutic Activities in Health and Social Care You will design, carry out and evaluate a creative activity to be used with a specific client.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed entirely through coursework – there are no exams.

What activities can I get involved in?

You will also have the opportunity to gain 60 hours of work experience. This will help you put your learning into practice and perhaps decide upon your future career.

Where does it lead?

These courses are vocational and will cover the necessary knowledge and skills for those who want to pursue a career in Health and Social Care. The BTEC Level 2 relates to the National Occupational Standards Level 2.

Depending on the grade you achieve, you may be able to progress onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care or possibly an A level programme. You may also use this qualification to gain employment within the Health and Social Care sector. Many positions are available for those with Level 2 qualifications.
