What will I learn?

Working in the IT industry You will review your own skills, and then a variety of jobs in the industry, and create a presentation on the skills that you need to develop through the course.

Communicating in the IT industry

We have an extensive range of books available in the library which provide as a great source of information for the course. The BTEC textbook follows the specification closely, so you can easily see what you have covered and quickly find the information you need. ICT resources are available in all teaching rooms The course is supported by the Learning Support team and learning mentors and teaching staff operate an ‘open door’ policy.

You will learn about the variety and purpose of document types and how to present information effectively, taking into account the audience and how the document will be used.

Computer Systems You will explore different types of software including applications that allow people to perform the tasks they need to do, systems software such as operating systems and programs that manage computer resources and allow applications to run efficiently.

Customising Applications You will use templates, menus, macros and toolbars to suit a variety of different user needs in a range of different software applications.

Website Development You will explore the potential of the Web and develop skills in how to use it effectively in industry, commerce and for leisure.

Computer Graphics You will gain an understanding of the basic principles of computer graphics. You will develop practical skills such as developing bitmap and vector images, as well as understanding hardware and software requirements.

Animation Techniques You will be introduced to the practical processes of animation and develop an understanding of historical and contemporary animation techniques. You will work on design, character, setting and narrative and will then focus on a specific technique for the production of your own animation sequence.

How will I be assessed?

This course is assessed entirely on the basis of coursework-based assignments. There are no exams.

What activities can I get involved in?

The College has lots of exciting enrichment and C.V building opportunities including the chance to earn the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, learn a new skill, learn a language, join a club, take up or develop a sport or take on a new challenge. Where does it lead?

This course can provide students with a good progression route to Applied ICT AS/A2 Level or on to other advanced courses in college such as the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in ICT. Others may choose to apply for jobs or apply for work based training outside the college using their qualification.

Whichever route students wish to take, this award will provide an excellent foundation.
