Newsletter (2) May 2013 Dear Parents/Carers Staffing 2013-2014 Following very successful interviews yesterday I am pleased to be able to tell you what the staffing structure will be in school for September 2013. The structure has been discussed thoroughly with all staff and governors – all with the best interests of the children in mind.

Miss Palmer works in our Reception class for at least one afternoon per week and so knows the children already. She comes with excellent references and plenty of enthusiasm. We will ensure that if Mrs Jones has to go on any courses during the rest of the term that whenever available Miss Palmer will cover the class.

Miss Harrison (Teaching Assistant) will continue to work with Mrs Jones in the Reception class.

Other support staff will still include our two Higher Level Teaching Assistants – Mrs Wright and Mrs Tyson, Mrs Dance, Mrs Mouzakatis, Mrs Shaw and Mrs Treadwell.

We are also very fortunate to have several other adults coming into school on a voluntary basis to help our children. If anybody else would like to volunteer please just have a word with one of the staff or me.

Zoolab The above company was supposed to be coming into school on Wednesday 1st May. Unfortunately the person who does the workshops in Cumbria and Lancashire was ill and so the event had to be postponed at the last minute. The new date is going to be Thursday 23rd May. They are going to deliver a workshop called “Rainforest Adventure”. This will include drama and storytelling about “the world’s most exciting habitat with a tale of being stranded in the Rainforest”. The children will also be able to meet some astonishing animals. Please have a look at their website for more information: www.zoolabuk.com Parking outside school The police came into school yesterday morning because they were concerned about people regularly parking on the yellow zigzag lines at the front of the building. going to patrol more regularly and would be issuing parking tickets. The police asked me to warn all parents about this.

I know we have put this in newsletters several times, but some people don’t seem to realise how serious this is. The following is a paragraph from the April 2011 newsletter:

Many thanks to all those who have stopped parking on the zig zags outside school and also to those people who never parked there. Please can everybody keep the front of school clear. We don’t want any children hurt on the road – it is very difficult to see safely to cross, or for drivers to see children if cars are parked there either before or after school. Thank you for your support with this.

Ecokidz bags Just a quick reminder of the change of date for the recycling bags. They will now be collected on Tuesday 14th May at 3.15pm. Please try to fill the bags as they will pay a lot money for old, good quality clothes, shoes, handbags, soft toys, bed linen, costume jewellery and small bric-a-brac.

All the money raised will be spent on extra activities for the children during our Arts Week which will take place in the week commencing Monday 8th July Dance and Drama Workshops Next week year 3 will be taking part in a two day dance experience called “Leaps and Sounds”.

This will culminate in a performance for parents in the school hall at 3.00pm. All are welcome to attend.

Thanks to some funding from Barrow Borough Council we have booked a series of “Zumbamatic” sessions for year 5. This is the children’s version of “Zumba”. The sessions will take place on Monday afternoons.

Children in year 4 have been invited to take part in the children’s opera “Dido and Aenaes”. They will learn music and songs this term and then the project will carry over into September/October, when they are in year 5. They will then join with three other schools and perform at The Forum.

Children in the current year 3 will take part in the Shakespeare Schools Festival when they are in year 4. The play that we will be studying is “Twelfth Night”. The charity that runs this event will be sending us a specially abridged script and the children will perform their play at The Forum with other schools who will be performing “Macbeth” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. This will be a great opportunity for the children as there were only four places available. I will send out dates nearer the time.

Sports Day We will be changing the date of Sports Day (afternoon) to Friday 14th June. This is primarily because Mr Thornhill now needs to go on a course on the previous date and he really wants to be involved in this whole school event.

May Half-term We break up for half-term on Friday 24th May. School will finish at the normal time of 3.15pm.
