Making your post 16 choices The choices you make in your final year of school are critical in determining what you will do following Sixth Form education. You must make sure that you are realistic in your ambitions, and that the choices you make will allow you to move on towards your career goal. At LSA we have created a broad and balanced curriculum. We offer our Sixth Form students 26 courses which have a track record of success regardless of students starting points. The subjects we offer cater for all of our students goals. The A Level courses we offer allow for a wide range of options for students looking to study at University. Our A Level course offer is based on facilitating subjects. These A Level courses allow you to keep your options open. Our BTEC courses also provide effective pathways into University study. We have a proven track record of success in getting students on BTEC courses onto good University courses. We also have a number of students each year who choose to go straight into employment. The package of courses we offer allows them to gain a broad range of knowledge and experience, which makes them very attractive to employers. We are not able to offer the range of courses a college is able to, but there are many misconceptions about which courses are required by a University to allow you to study for certain degrees. For example, if you were looking at studying Economics at University, then you would not have to have studied this course at A Level. Therefore, a large college may have more course choice than LSA, but having fewer courses on offer is not a disadvantage. Our package of courses will not and does not restrict our students from studying any course at University. On our website, in the Sixth Form section there is a tab called Making Informed Choices. This document shows which Sixth Form courses are required in order to study particular degrees. I would advise you to look at this document before making your final decision (pages 19-25). You will see from this, that the courses available at LSA allow our students to access any degree at any University. Universities are now looking at more than just academic profiles of young people. They also want to know about your hobbies, interests and what additional skills you can bring to their establishment. Our enrichment programme allows students to develop skills outside of the classroom; including teaching in local primary schools, linking with local businesses and work shadowing. We are incredibly proud of our Sixth Form at LSA. We are a large enough institution to provide everything a student would need before moving on with the next stage of their life. But we are also small enough to provide individual and meaningful support to each and every young person in our care.
