Is Sport (Development, Coaching & Fitness) for you? You must have achieved 5 GCSEs at grade C or above. You want to investigate the different aspects of the Sports Industry from health and fitness and sports therapy to sports coaching and teaching You want to apply your knowledge and technical skills within practical fitness and coaching environments
You wish to develop practical sports skills in a variety of sports You want to pursue a career in the sport and fitness industry This can be studied as a Subsidiary Diploma (equivalent of 1 A Level) over one year or as a Diploma (equivalent of 2 A Levels) over two years.
What will I learn? The Diploma is a 2 year course and in order to progress to the second year you will be required to successfully complete the 7 units outlined below in the first year.
Principles of Anatomy & Physiology in Sport You will explore the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and also to learn the fundamentals of the energy systems.
The Physiology of Fitness You will investigate the body’s response to acute exercise and how the body adapts to long-term exercise participation.
Assessing Risk in Sport You will become aware of the vital nature of risk assessment and its management within the sports industry, in order to make sure all risks are minimised before people get involved in sport.
How will I be assessed? Fitness Training & Programming You will learn how to plan fitness training sessions and design fitness training programmes.
Sports Coaching You will develop your understanding and knowledge of the roles, responsibilities, skills and techniques of a sports coach and how to apply them whilst coaching and/or leading sports sessions
Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise You will gain an understanding of fitness testing and the importance of health screening and health monitoring tests.
Practical Team Sports You will explore the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of team sports through practical participation.

There are no exams for this course. All assessment is through set assignments which are submitted at various points through the year.

The College has lots of exciting enrichment and C.V building opportunities including the chance to earn the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, learn a new skill, learn a language, join a club, take up or develop a sport or take on a new challenge. Where does it lead? Level 3 BTEC Diplomas are valued by employers and Higher Education. You may choose a degree in Sports Studies, Sports Therapy, Coaching, Leisure Management, Recreation Management or teacher training. You may choose a career in a sports-related field such as in a Sports Centre, Leisure Centre or Outdoor Activities Centre.
