Headliners

Spring 2013

LSA TECHNOLOGY AND PERFORMING ARTS COLLEGE

Dear Readers, Welcome to this edition of Headliners, and I hope you find much about the success of our students that is of interest to you. I never cease to be amazed by the talent and enthusiasm of our students and really believe that this school offers so much opportunity for young people to get involved and to excel. The breadth of things covered in Headliners in this edition gives a flavour of the opportunities offered to our students. As an example, this edition of Headliners is edited and produced by one of our students, who, interested in a potential career in journalism, asked if she could produce it. I hope you think that her efforts have been worthwhile. Students with talent, drive, enthusiasm and initiative need opportunity and encouragement to thrive. Behind each story of student success and involvement in this edition is an adult who has provided opportunity and support – whether that be a parent or a teacher. I hope our students will join me in thanking those adults for that. Yours sincerely, P S Wood, Headteacher

Breakfast Bonanza

The last day of term was marked by the most wonderful breakfasts imaginable for staff and students all at half price. Showcased were the £1 deals (cheese on toast & a juice drink, sausage and egg muffins, toasted crumpet or a ham bagel and a hot drink). The canteen staff also launched their ‘Loyalty Card’ Scheme!

We were delighted to host 45 students and Comenius teachers from schools in Germany, Hungary, Poland and Sweden as part of an EU scheme to create partnerships across Europe. Foreign students were paired with LSA student hosts, were involved in shadowing lessons and visits to the Lake District and Liverpool. All in all, the week was a success with students and teachers enjoying a taste of Lancashire.

Sixth Form Enrichment has added a new exciting initiative to the programme by forming an Africa Link Committee to run a range of events throughout the year for the charity ‘Build a School’ in Malawi. See inside for more info on the fundraising activities students have been up to over this last term.

‘Build A School’

George Fox, Year 11, was spotted at a tournament, and asked to attend an England Emerging Talent Camp at St Georges Park, from where he was then asked to attend the England Cerebral Palsy Development Squad training weekend at St George's Park. This is one step away from joining the actual England squad from where players are selected to represent their country in tournaments and international games, and where the players for the 2016 Paralympics will be picked! Whilst nothing is certain and no guarantees are offered, if George continues to improve and shows dedication and hard work at future training weekends, he stands a real chance of getting selected to play in an International Development Squad Tournament coming up between the Home Countries in July!

Congratulations to the members of our Year 7 Girls Netball Team, Kirsty Barker, Faith Hill, Ava Shearer Fox, Ellie Fox, Ellie Fleming, Sophie Wallbank, Molly Dyer and Jasmine Heaps who won the Wyre & Fylde Netball tournament!

Ballet Star

A dream is coming true for 14 year old student, Kelsey Horridge. An audition to recruit 100 young ballet dancers (out of 200 hopefuls), in the North West of England to perform in a professional production of "Swan Lake" at Preston Charter Theatre on April 5th and 6th resulted in a 'yes' for Kelsey! The audition itself was quite an experience as the young dancers took part in a 90 minute ballet class on stage with parents watching from the audience.

Gold Medallist

David Burley in 9ALA competed in the South Midlands Team Taekwondo Championship held in Hereford. He achieved a Gold medal in the Middleweight Black Belt Tag team! Congratulations to two of our students, who bagged top and runner up awards at the recent Allstars Awards Ceremony, run jointly by Blackpool Gazette and Blackpool Sixth Form College. Netball star, Jodie Rose (right), came top in her category out of all the students across the Fylde Coast! Well done to both girls for their achievements and contribution to sport at LSA.

Rugby For Lancs Well done Toby!

Toby Harrison in 10SHO is now playing rugby for Lancashire.

Thanks to LSA Teacher, Michael Cassidy, thirty hugely talented Sixth Form students studying Art and Photography have been able to showcase selected works from their portfolios for the general public! The collection was launched on Thursday 7th March in Café Dolce, Abingdon Street, Blackpool, and remained on display until the end of March. Not only this, our talented Sixth Form artists and photographers have been able to showcase their works in Fylde Gallery in Booths, Lytham. This display is still current and ends on the 27th April. Sophie Gunston, Year 12, was highly commended against tough competition and was awarded £50 worth of art vouchers for her painting of a duck pond!

Gardening Entrepreneur Everything in the garden is lovely for Year 13 A level student Greg Anderton. The talented student undertook the challenge of launching a spring catalogue to staff featuring a range of planted spring bulbs for sale. Greg intends to raise funds to finance the revamp of other garden areas around the school. Year 11 student, Thomas Waite, was requested to compose background music for the play We Lost Elijah performed by the Dukes Youth Theatre production. He also controlled the timing and dynamics of the music live!

Former student and Head Boy in 1998, James North, has now been promoted to the position of Swordbearer to Alderman Richard Gifford, Lord Mayor of the City of London. As Sword-bearer he will accompany Lord Mayor Gifford and subsequent Lord Mayors in a procession of special events including official dinners and state banquets at Guildhall. Congratulations to James from LSA!

Ella Revill, Year 8, has won the Comenius Logo Competition. Her logo will appear on the eTwinning site and on our Comenius paperwork. She has also won a place to attend the partnership meeting in Sweden in October!

‘BUILD A SCHOOL’ 25 Sixth Form students have formed The Africa Link Committee for the ‘Build a school’ charity in Malawi. Sixth Form students are organising all kind of events to raise money for the project, and a number of local businesses have already made donations of hampers etc. to start the ball rolling. The total raised since September is now over £3,000! See our school website for more information on the Africa Link Committee’s short and long term goals.

Veggies For Lent

PERFORMING ARTS Even if the name may be enough to fry your brain, the piece created by the Year 13 Theatre Studies students was entertaining, hardhitting and understood by all audiences. Cathypatveradebbienancy covered the hard issues of children’s ‘traumatic experiences’, namely schizophrenia and the story of how Cathy became Pat, Vera, Debbie and Nancy. All the students did exceptionally well with their results on the day of the practical exam. Written by Tabitha Riley, Year 12.

‘Cathypatveradebbienancy’

Two of our Year 12 students, Amy Hanson and Jonathan Abbott, decided to become vegetarians for Lent in order to raise money to build an administration block for teachers in Malawi. They are totally abstaining from meat, fish and gelatine. So far they have been promised £530 in sponsorship. Good luck to both of them! Year 9 students, who covered the topic of Learning on Development, put theory into practice by planning and running a Trade Fair to raise money to help people in a poorer part of the world. A challenge was set to raise as much money as possible by providing cake stalls, tombola, raffles and games for the rest of the school. £275 was raised over lunchtime!

Fair-traders

It was a very different lunchtime which students from LSA experienced recently with live entertainment from the Manchester pop sensations, and Britain's Got Talent finalists, boy band ‘Reconnected.’ All of the proceeds from the successful concert were donated to the ‘Build A School’ charity.

Teachers Got Talent!

The teachers of LSA strutted their stuff to a packed audience of students. Talent ranging from dazzling musical performances, dancing lots of humour and even a funny poem! Three Sixth Form judges did the Simon Cowell on the contestants to the delight of the students. The money raised from this event was to help fund the building of classrooms in Malawi.

Year 13 performance of ‘Cathypatveradebbienancy’ The Year 12 Theatre Studies students also had to create a piece of theatre Year 12 performance of ‘The Bacchae’ for an exam piece. Using an adapted version of an ancient Greek play by Euripides, they brought The Bacchae to life. The story followed the god Dionysus and his band of wild women – the Bacchae. After months of preparation, the students performed wonderfully and all the grades achieved were well earned. Written by Tabitha Riley.

Farewell To Marion We bid farewell to one of our much respected members of staff this half term. Marion Watson has been Biology Technician since 1992 and has worked under three Heads of Biology in that time. We wish her all the best in her retirement. Mrs Tonia Hallam braved the icy waves of the North Sea on Boxing Day when she entered the freezing cold waters for a Christmas dip! However, there was reason for her madness, she and her husband raised money through their efforts for the Down’s Syndrome Association. Earlier in the year she had taken part in the Great North Run and her husband completed the Manchester to Blackpool Bike Ride, raising hundreds of pounds along the way.

Brave Or Mad?

Our F1 teams have been speeding away, reaching the National Finals in London for the first time ever! We had two teams competing, ‘Silver Bullet’, KS3 (age 12) and ‘Mary’s Angels’ KS5 (6th Form). They have spent twelve months Designing, Analysing, Making, Testing, Developing and Racing their race cars, working on sponsorship, Team Identity and Portfolio. Getting to the finals really costs, and Lytham Rotary came to our aid by financing the trip. Both teams showcased a full slide show presentation, speeches and demonstrations of the cars on the tracks to 3 members of the Rotary, after which they donated the money. We are most grateful for their support. Alas we did not win the £10,000 Denford CNC machine and a chance to compete in the World Finals in Texas this summer, but the experience has been the thrill of a lifetime and the teams did fantastically well.

Formula 1

4 of our Year 13 Politics students, Alex Beauchamp, Holly Chyba-Little, Jake Richardson and Georgia Williams, took a trip to London to see Parliament in action first hand along with Mrs Gillian Boulter, Head of Humanities. The students were able to witness Prime Minister’s Question Time (PMQT), meet with Mark Menzies their MP, and also got to observe a very full session in the House of Lords, complete with Lord Sugar spotted Tweeting on his phone from the Lords benches!

PMQT

World Down Syndrome Day World Down Syndrome Day was marked by a raffle organised by Ms Sue Fieldhouse in Learning Support. She was ably assisted by Isabel Garman, who went around school selling tickets and picked the winning ticket. The raffle raised £117.50! As ever, our hardworking PTFA has been busy PTFA organising activities to the benefit of our students. Following on a very successful Quiz Night in March, they look forward to the next spectacular event on Friday 14th June - a Summer Ball at the Clifton Park Hotel. All the proceeds will go to a new Mobile Food Shop. Tickets are £35 each, please contact Debbie on 07917755335. Be there or regret it!
