Story of the McEwen Building
Greatest Wealth is Health
The Colleen and Brian Johnston Wellness Suite was designed as a space for the Schulich community to retreat, recharge and refuel. Through the introduction of programs and initiatives including stress management, blood pressure clinics, therapy dogs and more, the School’s focus on occupant well-being has been amplified. Programming in the Wellness Suite is delivered through new collaborations with York University’s Faculty of Health and its School of Nursing, and soon, the School of Kinesiology and Health Science. This programming collaboration is designed to provide valuable experiential learning opportunities for students.
DONOR SPOTLIGHT
“I’m grateful for the superb university education from Schulich which has served me well, but I definitely can’t say I was a fitness enthusiast in university! However, I’ve discovered over the years that a focus on health and vitality is so important to enjoying life and balancing family, career and community commitments. My advice to students – be kind to yourself – make health and wellness a priority.”

Art in the McEwen Building
“The art in the Rob and Cheryl McEwen Graduate Study & Research Building is an extension of the collection in the Seymour Schulich Building and deeply rooted in Schulich’s core brand: global, innovative and diverse. Representative of arguably some of the best, museum-quality art being created today, I hope the community will be inspired by the collection. The works in the collection were selected for the community to enjoy, be challenged by, and perhaps allow one to think about the world a little differently because of them.”

Innovative Thinking
The Leading Change Campaign has attracted investment to establish distinguished chairs and professorships (both endowed and term-funded) in critically important and emerging areas of study and research. In addition, through the generosity of individual, corporate, or foundation donors, funding for new executives/entrepreneur-in-residence roles was provided, and created unique and real-world learning opportunities for students.

Looking Back to Chart a Path Forward
When Campaign Cabinet Co-Chair Rick Waugh, OC (MBA ’74, Hon LLD ’07) and his wife Lynne established their family foundation in 2001, their focus was clear: support projects and opportunities that feed the success of the health, social services, and education sectors. In 2016, the Waugh Family Foundation announced a significant contribution of $3 million to the Leading Change Campaign. Driven by the family’s passion for research and education, the Foundation created the Richard E. Waugh Chair in Business History and made a generous investment toward the construction of the McEwen Building. The Waugh Family Discovery Floor, located on the second level, named to honour the family’s contribution to the Campaign, is a focal point for research and innovation. The Waugh Family Discovery Floor is home of the George Weston Ltd Centre for Sustainable Supply Chains, the Deloitte Cognitive Analytics and Visualization Lab, the Quiet Study Room overlooking the Green Roof, the Graduate Student Lounge, the Executive Seminar Room, and a number of collaborative spaces for students, staff, and faculty to utilize.

He also co-edited Re-Imagining Capitalism with former McKinsey Global Managing Partner, Dominic Barton, and Schulich Dean Dezsö J. Horváth.
RE-IMAGINING CAPITALISM
Core to the engagement mandate associated with the Leading Change Campaign, Schulich has hosted 13 forums focused on the themes emerging from the book Re-Imagining Capitalism, published in 2016. Hosted in more than eight different countries, alumni, leaders from the private and public sectors, and other stakeholders have engaged in discussions confronting capitalism today and the urgency of needed action to move society toward a more responsible, equitable, and sustainable economic model. Published by Oxford University Press, Re-Imagining Capitalism includes chapters from leading scholars, business and community leaders, and has been translated into Simplified Chinese (translation into Simplified Japanese is underway).

The Krembil Effect
The Krembil name has deep meaning at the Schulich School of Business. First, Robert Krembil, CM (MBA ‘71, Hon LLD ’00) and his grandson Jake Krembil (MMgt ‘18) are both proud graduates. Second, the Krembil family’s philanthropy to the School has generated substantial impact through the Krembil Scholars Program established by Robert Krembil. Since the launch of the Scholars program in 2001, more than 120 students have benefited from this critical and prestigious financial support. $5 million investment to establish a new Centre of Excellence in Health Management and Leadership. The gift will also create a new chair to scale the Centre and deepen sector and industry collaborations. CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF TRANSFORMATIONAL SUPPORT AND IMPACT
In 1995, Seymour Schulich and the Schulich Foundation’s benefaction positioned the Schulich School of Business for years of future success. Now, as the School enters its 25th Anniversary year of the benefaction, the Schulich Foundation endowment is a cornerstone of stability and vision, and a guiding force for our global business school. “As an incoming Schulich student, I am thrilled about receiving this Scholarship because it shows that my respect, confidence, and love for Schulich is a mutual, two-way feeling between me and my home away from home for at least the next 4 years.”
BENJAMIN SHELDON DUKE, Seymour Schulich BBA/iBBA Entrance Scholarship Recipient, September 2019
Preparing Leaders of Tomorrow
During the Campaign, several new donor-funded initiatives were established, all designed to enrich the Schulich student experience and provide real-world, hands-on learning opportunities. For example, the York University Student Investment Fund (YUSIF) launched in 2016 to provide undergraduate students with the opportunity to gain real-time portfolio management and investment experience. Under the guidance of an impressive team of volunteer mentors from leading firms across Canada and YUSIF’s Executive-in-Residence, Anthony Faiella (MBA ’92) at Schulich, students focus on the long-term growth of the Fund’s assets and operate the day-to-day of the Fund to simulate a real investment boutique, including weekly meetings, portfolio reviews, and presentations. As part of Schulich’s commitment to high-value experiential learning, students undergo a rigorous interview process to become involved with YUSIF and can also receive course credit for their work on YUSIF.

CASE COMPETITION CHAMPIONS
It is a proud tradition of Schulich alumni to provide support for the Schulich Annual Fund. Through the Annual Fund’s highest priorities designation, donors have provided critical funding to support Schulich students as they participate in case competitions across the globe. Thanks to alumni gifts, students received bursary funds to help cover registration fees, food, travel, and accommodations, lessening the overall financial burden associated with these important learning experiences. The Schulich Annual Fund was an integral component of the Leading Change Campaign, helping to ensure that one of the world’s best business schools had the resources it needed to become even better.

ACCELERATING ANALYTICS & ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Deloitte and the Schulich School of Business are shaping the way to developing analytics and AI talent through a unique and innovative collaboration. Located on the second floor of the Rob and Cheryl McEwen Graduate Study & Research Building, the Deloitte Cognitive Analytics & Visualization Lab is a hotbed of collaboration, innovation, and research, created to foster advances in the interpretation of big data and artificial intelligence. The Lab and its related consulting project – a first in Canada – is where Schulich’s MBAN and MMAI students dig into real data, spending two terms understanding the business problem and gaining insights into real issues facing organizations. Students communicate and collaborate with sponsoring organizations while using the latest technologies, accessed on a cloud-based platform, to analyze rich data sets. The Lab is powered by cutting-edge commercial technologies and platforms as well as open source technologies. It mirrors many of the same technologies used in industry, allowing students to hit the ground running following graduation.

Keeping the Circle of Giving Going
As a student in the IMBA program, Sasha Krstic (IMBA ’03) engaged with classmates, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds, which expanded her horizons while cultivating a professional network and lifelong connections. She credits Schulich for having contributed immensely to her career trajectory that has taken her across the globe from Sweden to Singapore where she connected with the Dean and the alumni team in 2019. Later in 2019, Sasha moved back to Canada to join Mastercard Canada as its new President. Since being back in Canada, Sasha has volunteered as a member of the Dean’s CEO Panel for Launch Week in September 2019, and recently, as the keynote speaker for the IMBA 2020 virtual convocation.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
“Alumni pride is at the heart of the Schulich School of Business and is why my family donated to the Leading Change Campaign. Our School’s impressive growth and bold future are inspiring and we are glad to be a part of it.
Schulich is changing the future of management education in profound ways – new ways of thinking, learning and discovery – all needed now more than ever. Our family believes in the power of education – so investing in
Schulich’s continued evolution made perfect sense to us. Schulich is a second family for me and members of my family: professors, leaders, and staff who all played a significant role in my experience when I was a student and who continue to have an impact on my life as a proud alumna of this fine School.
I’m delighted to be one of more than 730 alumni who contributed to
Leading Change’s alumni challenge. It was pretty special to know that our gifts had double the impact for a school that we care so deeply about – all thanks to the generous matching grant from the Schulich Foundation.”

“What motivates me most about volunteering is seeing the impact my words and experiences have on the incoming students. Every year I see the same qualities among the students; they are forward-thinking visionaries with a holistic view of what it means to be successful. They are eager to learn with both mind and heart. As I chat with them, it is abundantly clear to me that they are the leaders of tomorrow. And there is something very reassuring about knowing that the future

ALUMNI OPENING DOORS
Schulich alumni play a pivotal role not only in strengthening the Schulich brand through their own achievements, but in reinforcing the Schulich spirit of volunteerism and paying it forward to the next generation of leaders. Over the course of the Leading Change Campaign, notable Schulich alumni have volunteered to host Alumni Open Houses at their corporate offices to provide learning opportunities and deepen connections among employee teams bonded by a shared alumni connection to Schulich.

A FITTING TRIBUTE
Ties between the Halpern family and the Schulich School of Business run deep. York University has graduated 8 members of the Halpern family, including Jeff Halpern (BBA ‘78), his daughter Ilana Halpern (BBA ’06) and his brother Howard Halpern (BBA ’82), as well as Joshua Halpern (MBA/JD ’14), and Sharon Freedman (MBA ’84), all of whom graduated from the Schulich School of Business.
When Jeff Halpern (BBA ’78) attended the Faculty of Administrative Studies (FAS, as it was known then), finances were tight. His father passed away when he was in high school and the family had very limited funds. But that didn’t stop Jeff from pursuing his dreams of attending business school and to this day Jeff recounts how supportive and encouraging all the faculty and staff at FAS were. In particular, Jeff recalls the incredible support and mentorship of Charmaine Courtis, who was working at FAS, and later became the Executive Director, Student Services and International Relations. Charmaine worked at Schulich for more than 40 years and retired in 2013. As a member of the International Advisory Council at Schulich since 2004, Jeff was intrigued by the Leading Change Campaign, in particular the opportunity to help support his alma mater’s future success. Jeff became the first Schulich alum to support Leading Change. His enthusiastic early support of the Campaign inspired many other alumni to follow in his footsteps. In honour of Jeff’s gift to the Campaign, the School named a space inside the Rob and Cheryl McEwen Graduate Study & Research Building. Jeff was delighted by the recognition, but he wanted to ensure he could recognize Charmaine Courtis for her tireless devotion to students.
When you visit the G212 Faculty Office on the second floor, you will find a plaque naming the space in honour of Charmaine because of Jeff and Nancy Halpern’s generosity and kindness.
“Leading Change is all about not sitting back and doing nothing or watching others do something positive. It’s about each of us taking a role as leaders to do whatever we can to make a difference.”

CREATING LASTING IMPACT ON THE SCHOOL AND ITS NEXT GENERATION
Agnes Orosz (MBA ’96) and
Wojtek Niebrzydowski (MBA ’86)
are passionate about education and helping others benefit from the same opportunities they had. Agnes and Wojtek immigrated to Canada prior to attending Schulich, and both forged successful careers in the financial sector.
Proud alumni through and through, the couple has championed student success through the establishment of the “Agnes Orosz and Wojtek Niebrzydowski MBA Entrance Award”, the naming of the “Agnes Orosz (MBA ‘96) and Wojtek Niebrzydowski (MBA ‘86) PhD Research Office” in the McEwen Building, as well as actively mentoring students through the alumni2student mentorship program operated by the Alumni Relations department. Schulich holds a special place in the hearts of both graduates and they are proud to also be legacy donors to the School. Through their will, they have provided funds to continue their support of student success.
“In this complex and challenging world, it is incumbent on all alumni to champion the School and to help students, whether financially, through mentoring, or some other way, so that they in turn can help others.”

THE POWER OF LEGACY GIVING
During Leading Change, a number of alumni and friends confirmed legacy gifts to support the School in the future. Legacy donors are welcomed into the White Rose Legacy Circle at York University in honour of the special role their future commitments will have.
Legacy giving supports Schulich’s vision for the future and provides the confidence that can only come from financial security and the support of our alumni. Legacy giving keeps Schulich among the world’s leading business schools and ahead of the curve as it provides a steady source of future resources.
Legacy gifts realized during the Campaign, more than $4 million, have helped the School establish new scholarships (both endowed and term-funded), as well as provide critical funding to support the new Building and enhance the student experience.
THE GEORGE SVEC (MBA ’69) AND KATHERINE MEANEY SVEC COURTYARD
To celebrate the incredible generosity of George Svec (MBA ’69) and Katherine Meaney Svec, the School named the exterior Courtyard of the Rob and Cheryl McEwen Graduate Student & Research Building in honour of the late couple. The Courtyard is highly visible from all levels of the Schulich complex and encompasses seamless indoor and outdoor experiences.
Schulich Alumni Donor Wall
Legacy donors, like George and Katherine, are recognized on the School’s Lifetime Donor Wall, as well as on the Schulich Alumni Donor Wall and on gift helps significantly to benefit our students and our School tomorrow.
