Editors’ Letter “Welcome to the Essential Looks ANZ: Love in Full Colour. We are excited to continue our local collaboration with Schwarzkopf Professional Australia and New Zealand. This time, we have partnered to celebrate both upcoming bridal trends, and the importance of sustainability by pairing our Romance Was Born Forever collection with the relaunch of IGORA Royal. When people think of Romance Was Born, they think of intense rich colours. Colour is at the core of everything we do as a business. It’s how we’ve made our name. It’s therefore fitting that we’ve collaborated with Schwarzkopf Professional, who also hold colour as an integral part of their world. We have loved the synergy in this collaboration. Our collection, Romance Was Born Forever, has been crafted almost entirely from RWB dead stock and preloved vintage pieces. We’ve created a treasure trove filled with doilies, lace and sequins, and repurposed discarded wedding dresses that are rich in memories to bring out a new-age bridal collection. We love to watch the models change hair colour, dress up, and transform. We continue to push boundaries and hope to inspire.”

INTRODUCING

Dee Parker Attwood What are the bridal trends for the 2021/22 season?

I always believe that brides should look like themselves, but an emphasised version. If somebody always wears their hair down, and they’re considering bringing it up, then I would recommend having a trial and making sure you’re comfortable with that. Nine times out of 10, brides want to look like a more polished version of themselves.

How would you approach colour decisions on your wedding day?

With bridal colour, you certainly want to give yourself time for it to be perfected before the day. I would give yourself a week before and give your hair time to be washed at least twice before the big day. A colour consultation is always important with any colour work. Your colourist will be able to make suggestions based on your skin tone, and what you’re comfortable with. They’ll also be able to provide colour recommendations that emphasise the natural texture of your hair. For example, if you have beautiful curls, they tend to be more dynamic and hold better with some balayage work or highlights. What do you love most about the Essential Looks: Love in Full Colour Collection?

It’s been really exciting to work with the colourists and IGORA Royal on this Essential Looks. The colour palette of the IGORA Royal range is incredible. It’s such a diverse range and covers the whole colour spectrum. I also love working on the hair afterwards, as it gives it this beautiful shine and leaves it in an amazing condition. The vibrant colours – particularly Billie’s – help make the styles really stand out, too. 22 | ESSENTIAL LOOKS: LOVE IN FULL COLOUR

What inspired your styles during this Essential Looks?

Starting with Billie’s fire engine red. I knew she would look amazing with some added vibrancy and copper tones. I’m very inspired by European styles, and at the moment the 80s have made a real comeback. Like fashion, hair trends have a habit of repeating themselves. For Billie, I leant into the Rock Chic aesthetic, with short texture on the top, and a long naturally textured back.

Uma is your quintessential platinum, a true 80s baby. She absolutely rocks her blonde. For her, I created a glam version of a mullet. All short and textured at the top whilst keeping the length of the back. With Monique, I wanted to keep her length. I gave her some movement with a large crimper, from the eyeline to the jaw line. I used a healthy dose of OSiS+ Sparkler to add some shine and wow factor at the end. What is your advice for the next generation of hairdressers?

This industry has been fabulous to me. I absolutely love it. My advice would be to get into the salon, and you’ll know within the first week if it’s for you. It helps to be a people person as you’re around people all day, but the main thing is you have to love the transformation. You need to look at people and find inspiration, be able to visualise what will work, and enjoy the process of making it happen. The industry is vast and full of opportunities – you just have to throw yourself in.

Nine times out of 10, brides want to look like a more polished version of themselves.

As your career carries on, I think it’s still important to have space to play. Whether you’re a colourist or a stylist, keep pushing boundaries and keep learning. Keep experimenting and practicing.

Do you think COVID showed Australians the value of their hairdressers?

Absolutely. After Melbourne was closed for four months, people were running to the salon. It was the first place that people went when we opened. When we first reopened, we received over 1000 phone calls in the first two days. Even though we had limited seating, we still got the work done. I think our clients really appreciated us after being closed for so long! 23

IN TR OD UC IN G

Natalie Anne

What do you predict as the bridal hair trends for the 2021/22 season? I think bridal hair, overall, sees less swings in its trends. Mostly it’s about keeping the look as classic as possible, so when you look back at your Wedding photography 10, 15, or 20 years later, you don’t have a hair style that has fallen out of fashion. It’s in bridal hair that I believe colour adds a lot of dimension and purpose to a style. What inspires the looks that you created for Essential Looks: Love in Full Colour? I wanted to make sure that the looks I created leaned into Romance Was Born’s clothing, which balances being strong yet also ethereal. I also wanted to take the looks in a different direction to Dee, who created stunning shapes and textures which look beautiful with the vibrant colour of the hair. Instead, I went quite soft, and played with the placement of accessories. I also had a lot of fun with the BLONDME Instant Blush sprays to colour the baby’s breath I weaved into the hair, creating a beautiful soft icy blue and blush pink tone.

24 | ESSENTIAL LOOKS: LOVE IN FULL COLOUR

I was also very inspired by a look that I saw on the runway a few years back, which is what inspired the wet-look brush back style. I’ve got this obsession with wet, shiny and glossy, healthy-looking hair. I also wanted to work on a look that added dimension and shape, by showing the brush marks. Of course, a lot of OSiS+ Sparkler was used to add the shine! What advice would you give to someone just starting in the hairdressing industry? Hairdressing is great if you’re the type of person that likes to make a change in somebody else’s life. For me, I change every single client that sits in my chair, their life, the way they feel about themselves, their insecurities becoming some of their favourite parts of themself. To me, that’s what makes the job so special. I would recommend if you’re just starting out to find a place in a salon that really values training. Ask them what type of training program they offer, but also realise that education is something that is always important – long into your hairdressing career.

It’s in bridal hair that I believe colour adds a lot of dimension and purpose to a style. You always have your more formal education, but you also need to have the determination to educate yourself outside of that, by inspiring yourself every day to put your best foot forward. Surrounding myself with incredible like-minded artists and beautiful designers really helps me. Working alongside different people and assisting them (even to this day) is great for me, because it triggers different types of techniques and inspires me in new ways.

INTRODUCING

Dylan Hooper What inspired your career as a colourist? I started with the basics of hairdressing like everyone else, however, colour definitely called to me more. It was something that came a lot more naturally to me. I love the whole transformation process behind colouring. The excitement of having a big change. I feel like you can make a really big statement with your hair in terms of colour, and I love being able to help people make that transformation. What do you look for when choosing a colour brand?

I always look for performance first. When a brand says it does something, and then constantly delivers on that promise, that’s a huge win for me. The end results that you achieve, how the hair feels, how long that colour lasts, and the range of colour you can achieve with the brand are all important measures for me. I also don’t love a compact range. The more the merrier with colour – I say! Since picking up IGORA Royal I’ve been obsessed with it. The results speak for themselves. What do you love most about working on Essential Looks?

These days are fantastic for me. I’m so excited to have been selected to play a part. I got home after both the colour and shoot day and couldn't stop talking 26 | ESSENTIAL LOOKS: LOVE IN FULL COLOUR

about the experience. It left me so inspired. I feel ready to get into the salon and do amazing hair. The opportunity to work alongside the other amazing creative Artists is huge. What advice would you give to a new colourist?

Be brave. Don’t be scared of what you’re doing. Believe in the products, and you’re halfway there. The other half is believing in yourself. Then you can create what you want. The first step is just starting! Do you think perceptions of the hairdressing industry are changing?

When I was five years old, I used to go to the salon with my mum. I used to look at her getting her hair coloured and I just knew I wanted to do that. Since as long as I could remember, I have told people I wanted to be hairdresser. Unfortunately, I received a lot of advice from people growing up that I should pick a different profession. So I went into art teaching, and it was two years after starting that I knew I still wanted to be in hair. I didn’t want to waste my life doing something I was only half in love with. Since then, I’ve never looked back. And now, people look at what I do and they absolutely think it’s a real, challenging and exciting career. The stereotype is changing – people are seeing how many doors it opens and how versatile the field is.

Be brave. Don’t be scared of what you’re doing. Believe in the products, and you’re halfway there.

INTRODUCING

Cassie kavalieros

What ignited your passion for colouring? I first started working in salons when I was 14, but I always knew I wanted to be a hairdresser. The passion only grew from my first day in salon, and I was thrilled when I first started my apprenticeship. I was at one point torn between performing arts, but I loved being behind the scenes and the creativity that came with hair. Through my training I always looked forward to colouring sessions, whether it was with the Seniors, at TAFE of through Educators. How would you describe the experience of being a part of Essential Looks? This has been such a great opportunity. I would never have imagined that I would be a part of something like Essential Looks. I am so thankful to my boss, Louise Akle, for putting me forward for this opportunity, and to Schwarzkopf Professional for having me. I’m really

28 | ESSENTIAL LOOKS: LOVE IN FULL COLOUR

thankful for this opportunity from her and from the Schwarzkopf Professional team. It makes a huge difference in your confidence to experience days like these. What do you see as this season’s bridal trends in colour? Brides are going for more subtle changes and look enhancements in

If you’re wondering whether or not to take a plunge for your wedding day, the answer is probably a yes.

their colouring. If they’re going for a natural or enhanced curl look, we often add highlights to create some added depth and texture to transform the look. If you’re wondering whether or not to take a plunge for your wedding day, the answer is probably a yes! We recently took a blonde client to this subtle, beautiful pink which turned out amazing. The key is to book your colour transformation a few weeks before to allow it to be lived in. If you’re after a more extreme change, try it a few months in advance so it can be finessed and perfected by the time the big day rolls around! What do you love most about IGORA Royal? I have loved working with IGORA Royal over the past six years. There’s a colour option for every client, and I never feel like I’m left without a colour. I feel empowered and confident to make those bolder changes that clients can ask for, and I love the vibrancy and shine in the end result. 29

INTRODUCING

Chrissie Biesiek Why is it important to use a reputable colour brand as a colourist? It’s really important to work with a professional brand for a number of reasons. The first would be for the support, and the backing from education. You can't be the best colourist you can be without ongoing education support from when you first start colouring, through to when you’re a senior colourist. Secondly, a quality colour brand that maintains the integrity of the hair. Finally, the opportunities that come with stocking a reputable brand, including working on great photoshoots, fashion weeks, and other exciting moments. What advice would you give an aspiring colourist? Being a colourist is a great professional career path. For me, it took me all around the world, and it has opened a lot of doors, from big productions like Fashion Week shows and key magazine shoots, through to opening my own business, teaching at TAFE, and now being able to work in education for a leading International haircare company. Why do you love working with IGORA Royal? It’s such an extensive range. There truly is something for everyone, and you would never find yourself without the tools to create what your customer is asking for. The longevity of the colour is also unparalleled, and the innovation behind the brand is constantly evolving, too.

30 | ESSENTIAL LOOKS: LOVE IN FULL COLOUR

You can't be the best colourist you can be without ongoing education support. What was your favourite transformation from this Essential Looks? For me, it has to be Billie, she came in with a little bit of regrowth, so we needed to firstly touch up her roots. The colour that we then transformed for her is so beautiful. I love the stunning vibrancy of the copper and red hues, and it’s great to be able to showcase not only the core IGORA Royal range, but also the IGORA Fashion Lights range too.

31

What do you predict as being the key wedding hair trends of the 2021/22 season? Wedding hairstyles is one category that will often remain timeless and classic. One trend that has come to stay, however, are braids. From French braids flowing to the side, to loose braided crowns, to half up/half down styles that incorporate braids and are made even more beautiful with accessories and flowers.

For me, it's all about the transformation. Hair colour can have such a profound impact on the way we feel, our confidence and self-esteem. 32 | ESSENTIAL LOOKS: LOVE IN FULL COLOUR

What do you love most about being a colourist? For me it’s all about the transformation. Hair colour can have such a profound impact on the way we feel, our confidence and self-esteem. It can accentuate the creativity and playfulness of our clients, make them look more youthful, and make their hair feel amazing with an intense shine. This is why it’s so important to work with a brand that you trust and love to deliver perfect results every time. What do you love most about the Essential Looks: Love in Full Colour collection? I love the nostalgia that comes through in this collection. The feeling of vintage 70s and 80s hair vibes with an added modern twist with the romantic, draping fabrics. This collection is visually so stimulating. It’s bold in colour, brave in contrast, and playfully fun. There’s something for everyone. What do you love most about IGORA Royal? Where do I start! IGORA Royal was the first brand I worked with and trusted. It has had many transformations over the years but has never failed to deliver on the promised results. To have complete confidence in the colour you use is everything – and that is what IGORA Royal has always given me.
