PRP: The New Non-Surgical Hair Loss Treatment A promising new way to treat hair loss is now available at Schweiger Dermatology Group Dealing with hair loss can be extremely frustrating. Many hair loss treatments use chemicals or can even require surgery. But a safe, new and natural way to treat pattern hair loss has arrived! The new method is called Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections, and it’s showing promising results. Using growth factors in your own blood, PRP injections help to naturally stimulate hair growth.

How PRP for hair loss works The patient’s own blood is drawn and put into a centrifuge that extracts the platelets containing the growth factors. When injected into the scalp, those growth factors get to work and help increase hair count and density. ”We are excited to see our patients enjoy the beautiful resultsthey receive from PRP injections for hair loss,” says Dr. Eric Schweiger. “It’s

Letter from Schweiger Dermatology Group’s Founder Welcome to the winter issue of The SkinNY! While winter may not be the most obvious season to protect your skin from the sun, don’t forget you can still get sun damage any time of year. As Dr. Darrell Rigel points out in this issue, the snow reflects the sun and contributes to additional UV exposure this time of year. The drier air indoors

and outside can also contribute to dry skin and even trigger eczema outbreaks, so be sure to moisturize every day. You’ll find more tips on how to treat dry skin in this issue. At the beginning of every year, New Year’s resolutions are made. I hope that you make taking care of your overall health and skin one of your top priorities by scheduling an annual skin cancer screening and practicing sun safety habits all year round. I’m excited to see what 2016 brings to the world of dermatology. There are many promising new treatments on

DRY SPELL

Sure dry skin can strike at any time, but your skin is particularly susceptible in the winter time when humidity levels are close to zero in the air. Add in the fact that indoor heating can rob even more moisture from the air and you have a recipe for dry, itchy and irritated skin.

1. Bring Back the Humidity When the humidity in the air decreases, it’s time to invest in a humidifier. Regular use of a humidifier will add necessary moisture back into the air and into your skin. 2. Wash Only Once This may come as a shock, but during the fall and winter time, you get a free pass to wash your face only once a day–at night time. In the morning, just rinse your face with a splash of cold water. For the most gentle approach to cleansing, try swapping your lathering cleanser for a creamy cleanser. As for your body, steer clear of any harsh bar soaps in the shower that are laden with detergents and fragrance, which can irritate the skin. Instead, choose a mild, gentle soap, such as the white Dove Beauty Bar, which is made with a healthy dose of moisturizing cream.

6

3. Not So Hot Hot showers and baths might sound like a dreamy treat, but when the air is dry, they can be enemy number one for your skin. Hot water is great at depleting your skin from its natural oils. Instead of turning up the heat, go for a warm bath or shower instead. 4. Shut the Door Speaking of showers, close the door when you’re taking a bath or shower. This way, you’ll trap the steam in the bathroom and your skin can soak it in.

“Look for oil-based creams or lotions if your skin is dry. Those with sensitive skin may want to stick to products with glycerin because the other ingredients can create a burning sensation on irritated skin.” - Dr. Sandra Kopp

5. Moisturize Wet Skin Don’t wait until your skin is dry after cleansing or showering to apply your moisturizer. The best way to lock in moisture is by applying your creams and moisturizers onto damp skin. This way you’ll trap all those water molecules onto the skin. Wait no longer than three

minutes to apply your moisturizer. 6. Be Ingredient Savvy Start reading skincare ingredients. Rather than just buying a lotion or cream because it says “fights dry skin” or some other marketing language, make sure it has ceramides, glycerin, shea butter or stearic acid, lactic acid, dimethicone, urea or mineral oil, all of which are excellent skin hydrators. “Look for oil-based creams or lotions if your skin is dry,” says Dr. Sandra Kopp. “Those with sensitive skin may want to stick to products with glycerin because the other ingredients can create a burning sensation on irritated skin.” Also watch out for moisturizers that contain alcohols or fragrances, which can contribute even further to dry and inflamed skin. 7. Lip Balm Should be your B.F.F. Keep lip balm in every coat pocket as well as in your purse or backpack. The best way to treat dry, cracked lips is with a balm that will really seep into your lips. While good ole Chapstick can help, try petroleum jelly if your lips need more TLC.

DEALING WITH DRY SKIN IS AN ONGOING ISSUE IN THE WINTER. HERE, THE 7 BEST SKIN CARE HACKS FOR DRY SKIN AND PRODUCTS THAT WILL HELP CRACK THE CODE ON CRACKED SKIN.

Ingredients We’re Loving

Soothe dry skin with these ingredients in your skin care: Hyaluronic Acid: Hyaluronic acid (HA) is an important component of a part of the skin called the extracellular matrix. “What makes HA unique is its ability to retain moisture, thus providing protection and hydration to the skin,” explains Dr. Jeremy Fenton. But here’s the rub, the levels of hyaluronic acid levels decrease as we age, which is why using a topical product containing HA can have some real benefits. “A topical skin care product with hyaluronic acid should be used at least daily in order to see the benefits,” advises Dr. Fenton. Product to try: Pestle & Mortar Pure Hyaluronic Serum (pestleandmortarcosmetics. com). This ultra-lightweight gellike serum is made with sodium hyaluronate, which is a smaller particle than hyaluronic acid, thus making it easier to penetrate into the skin.

used to soothe dry skin? Colloidal oatmeal is made from oat grains that have been ground and boiled. The extract is used in skin care products to naturally add moisture to the skin and can help treat eczema, sunburns and even poison ivy. Product to try: Tatcha Indigo Soothing Triple Recovery Cream (tatcha.com). Crafted with Japanese Indigo, a proven antiinflammatory botanical extract and colloidal oatmeal, which alleviates dry skin as well as reduces inflammation, this luxurious cream is ideal for even the most sensitive skin. Oleosomes: Derived from the seeds of plants, oleosomes are powerhouses that release their natural oils over time. This ensures your skin is getting proper hydration throughout the course of a day or night. Product to try: Odacite Oleosomes Time Release Delivery Creme (odacite. com). Packed with aloe vera, shea butter, organic glycerin, carrot seed oil and sodium hyaluronate, this thoughtfully crafted moisturizer uses oleosomes to help ensure ongoing delivery of its goodness. Boost up the hydration factor with one of Odacite’s customizable serums.

The Science of Dry Skin Monique Olivares, PA-C at Schweiger Dermatology Group, explains the how and why our skin becomes dry. The winter months can bring bitter winds, frigid temperatures and decreased humidity. These environmental changes as well as aging, genetics, medical conditions, and skin care practices can all affect how dry we become this season. The skin’s outermost layer, the epidermis, is responsible for the transfer of moisture in and out of our skin. The epidermis is composed of a network of cells held together by junctions called desmosomes. Between these spaces are lipids (fatty acid substances) that create a moisture barrier. The tightness of the desmosome junctions as well as appropriate lipid production help to maintain proper skin moisture and exfoliation. A disruption to this system will lead to a loss of skin hydration and an increase in skin inflammation resulting in the itching, flaking, irritated and even sometimes cracking skin. Cosmetic Treatments to Book Now When your skin is protected by clothing and the sun’s rays are not as strong, winter might be the best season to treat your skin to a cosmetic procedure. Here, Dr. Sandra Kopp and Dr. Scott Dunbar weigh in on the best skin treatments to get now so your skin will be perfection before spring. Treatment: Fraxel What it does: Treats acne scarring, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and appearance of melasma/sun spots. Why do it in the winter: Fraxel 1550 (used for scars/wrinkles) usually results in an average of 3 days of redness and swelling, while Fraxel 1927 (used for pigmentation) results in rough darkened skin that peels off in an average of 5-7 days. “It is especially important for those treating melasma or sun spots to do this in the winter so they aren’t likely to experience a reoccurrence,” says Dr. Kopp. “Even small amounts of sun exposure in those prone to melasma can cause the pigment to come back.” The inflammation caused by the laser causes extreme sensitivity to sunlight and risk of sunburn and pigmentary changes. Intense heat will also slow or impair healing. Treatment: CO2 laser What it does: CO2 laser is one of the most versatile and effective lasers for resurfacing. It is used for fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, discoloration, sun spots, textural irregularities, and stretch marks. Why do it in the winter: Unlike Fraxel, most people only need one treatment, but the downtime is usually more significant. Redness and swelling can last days to weeks so proper preparation is necessary. “Most people experience a background redness that can be covered with makeup for a few weeks after the procedure that is extremely vulnerable to sun light,” says Dr. Kopp. “As with Fraxel, summer heat is not ideal for healing.” Treatment: Chemical Peels What it does: Peels can be used for evening skin tone, acne, sun damage, and resurfacing. There are different depths ranging from superficial which just target the outermost layer of the skin, to deep

The best procedures to get this winter for gorgeous skin by springtime

which targets the lower portion, the dermis. Why do it in the winter: Superficial peels can be done any time of year, but in general all peels are best saved for the winter, especially for darker skin types. “Many peeling solutions make you more sensitive to sun burn and can cause darkening on areas that are not protected,” explains Dr. Kopp. Treatment: Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) What it does: IPL is great for treating blood vessels, background redness/rosacea, acne and sun damage on the face, neck, chest and hands. It can also be used for hair removal. Treatments typically are done every 3-4 weeks for an average of 4-6 treatments. Though there is little downtime, sun protection is crucial to proper healing. IPL is not idea for darker skin types. Why do it in the winter: IPL can be done any time of year, but it is ideal in the winter because most people spend less time outdoors. Sunlight can lead to possible darkening of treated spots if sun avoidance isn’t practiced and rosacea is usually worsened by sun exposure. Treatment: Photodynamic Therapy or “Blue Light” therapy What it does: This treatment improves the cosmetic appearance of sun damaged skin while also killing any pre-cancerous cells. A medication is applied to the entire face and soaks in for around an hour. “This allows any sun damaged skin and pre-cancerous cells to ‘suck up’ the medicine, while the normal cells do not,” explains Dr. Dunbar. “Then we shine LED lights at the face which activates the medicine, killing the damaged cells that absorbed the photosensitizer medication. This seeks out not only visibly damaged cells, but also small pre-cancers that haven’t even shown up on the skin yet.” Why do it in the winter: Patients need to strictly avoid the sun since traces of the photosensitizer medication remain on the face for several days. Treatment: Laser Hair Removal What it does: Laser hair removal targets pigment in the hair follicle to reduce or eliminate regrowth of the hair. Treatments

typically are done every 4-8 weeks for an average of 4-6 treatments. The hair tends to grow back thinner and slower with each treatment so intervals may increase. Why do it in the winter: “It is best done on untanned skin to reduce the risk of pigmentation after the treatment and increase the contrast between the hair follicle and normal skin,” says Dr. Kopp. “Though there is little downtime, sun protection is crucial to proper healing.” Treatment: Sclerotherapy and Laser Vein Removal What it does: Tiny veins on the legs can be treated with laser therapy, however larger ones may require an injection to help seal off unsightly veins, which is known as sclerotherapy. Repeat treatment may be necessary to completely destroy the vein. Why do it in the winter: “Unfortunately it is very common to have hyperpigmentation that may last a few weeks after treatment of a vein so it is best done in pants season,” advises Dr. Kopp. “Also, it is recommended to wear compression stockings after treatment which is not ideal in the hot summer.” Treatment: Micropeel + Photodynamic therapy What it does: “This treatment is intended to give the greatest improvement both in cosmetic appearance of sun damage and destroy as many abnormal cells as possible,” explains Dr. Dunbar. Skin is pre-treated with a laser to peel off the protective surface cells, then the medication is applied for blue light therapy, this allows even greater efficacy of the photosensitizer drug and results in a much augmented effect. Why do it in the winter: “This ‘big gun’ procedure works beautifully, but you need to plan for some time off to heal, and avoid the sun for several days,” says Dr. Dunbar. The reactions can be impressive, even if you have only a moderate amount of sun damage. “You will come out with much improved, younger looking, healthier skin,” says Dr. Dunbar.

Skin-saving Travel Tips Whether you’re headed to the mountains or the beach this winter, keeping your skin in shape while traveling is key to going #nofilter on all of your vacation pics. Your Skin at the Beach “The most important aspects of adjusting to a beach climate are remembering to properly use sun protection and maintain adequate hydration,” advises Dr. Sandra Kopp, who recently got married in Tulum, Mexico. “People prone to body and facial acne may want to bring their acne products and avoid known triggers. Those with eczema may improve with the excess moisture in the air but sweating can cause bad flares and excess should be avoided. Chlorine in pools also is very drying to any skin type and should be washed off immediately after swimming followed by moisturizer application. Elective creams that cause sensitivity to the sun, such as Retin-A , can be stopped a week prior to the trip if they are not careful with sun protection.” Beach Vacation Packing Essentials Sunscreen, of course! Apply a broadspectrum SPF 30 at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. “At least two tablespoons, or approximately one shot glass of sunscreen, should be used to cover the entire body, and if you are using a spray sunscreen remember to rub in the product to provide full coverage,” advises Dr. Kopp. “If possible, renting a local sun umbrella is always ideal.” If logging in

hours at the pool or on the beach are part of the plan, then invest in some sun protective clothing and wide brimmed hats. Dr. Kopp also recommends packing ibuprofen, aloe, and hydrocortisone 1% . “In the event of a sunburn immediate use of these items may decrease redness, swelling and discomfort,” she says. “But if you do not have access to these products, cold milk compresses can be beneficial to help soothe the skin after a burn as well.” And if you think you’re going to be tempted to let your skin tan, pack a self-tanner! Your Skin on the Slopes “The sun is very strong when you’re skiing,” says Dr. Darrell Rigel, who spends many winter weekends and holidays in Vail, Colorado. “In fact, in the valley in Vail in February, the sun is as strong as in Miami Beach and the sun at 11,000 feet is as strong as it is in the islands.” What you may not even realize is that 40% additional UV exposure comes from reflective snow, which is why it’s especially important to apply sunscreen under the chin, Rigel advises. Your skin’s moisture levels can also take a beating while on the slopes. “Keep a layer of moisturizer on your face at all times,” says Dr. Rigel. “The cold weather can also trigger eczema thanks to low-humidity levels in the air and the inside air from the forced hot air.” Ski Vacation Packing Essentials You should be using an SPF of at least 30 on exposed areas. “Sunscreen doesn’t last all day — you’ll need to reapply in

the afternoon,” says Dr. Rigel. Another thing to watch out for is the security of your sunscreen cap. “When you’re at high altitude, make sure the cap to your sunscreen is on tight, as they can pop open at high altitude,” says Dr. Rigel. Don’t forget to pack a lip balm with SPF 30 to protect the lips. Also make sure a heavy moisturizer is in your luggage. Dr. Rigel also recommends bringing Vaseline to help protect exposed areas on the skin from frostbite. If you’re prone to eczema, it can’t hurt to bring an over the counter 1% hydrocortisone cream OTC to help ease any outbreaks. Dr. Rigel also suggests asking the front desk if they have a humidifier you can use. “The relative humidity of your hotel room is most likely going to be 10% or less,” he says. Low humidity makes for some less than stellar conditions for dry skin. Your Skin on an Airplane There are three important words to remember when flying the friendly skies: No airplane food. The sodium-laden meals found on commercial flights will rob your skin of its suppleness and help create raisin-like conditions on your face. Pack a fruit salad or some veggies to snack on, which are full of water and can help hydrate your skin from the inside out. Drinking lots of water during the flight can also help you feel notso parched. Fly with a clean, makeupfree face so you can easily slather on moisturizer during the flight. If you must land with your “face on,” then stash a hydrating BB cream in your purse and apply it before landing. 11

‘TIS THE SEASON FOR SULTRY Tips on how to make this holiday season your most gorgeous from our friends at GlamSquad

New Yorkers are never ones to shy away from a bold beauty statement. Here, Kelli Bartlett and Giovanni, GlamSquad’s Director of Makeup and Creative Director respectively, speak to which holiday trends they’re loving this year and the hair and makeup essentials to stock up on to ensure a beautiful new year. What are your favorite hair and makeup looks for the holiday season? For holiday, we are loving modern versions of retro looks. A deep red lip gets a cool update with a deep plum liner and a cherry red center. It also has the added benefit of visually plumping the lips. Retro waves in the hair are updated with more volume and teasing to give a va va voom look! How best to make makeup last throughout the night? Primers! Primers are problem solvers and by prepping your skin for longevity, your look is guaranteed to last until the last toast of champagne! My favorite primer for longevity is Lancome La Base Pro because it is mattefying and helps skin look smooth and picture perfect. Makeup setting sprays- like Urban Decay’scan also help “seal” your look into place! How best to extend the life of your blowout? While sleeping, fasten a loose yet secure bun on the top of your head using pins or a GlamSquad hair band. This will prevent tangles while still maintaining volume.

What are your favorite makeup products for holiday looks? Our favorite makeup products for the holidays are an amazing red lip, like NARS Cruella, and a gilded gold eye, like Woodwinked Eye Shadow by MAC. It is an instant holiday classic! What hairstyling tools are essential for holiday looks? A 1-inch curling iron with a clamp. This iron is very versatile and gives you options for tousled waves or bouncy curls. Textured or polished depending on your mood. How do you think New Yorkers approach beauty different than women in other areas of the country? New York women have an effortless approach to makeup. Its very similar to French women- where you want to look amazing, but don’t want to look like you spent a ton of time in your getting ready process. A beautiful blowout is a must and chic classic, natural makeup is key. What are the best beauty products to bring with you on New Years Eve? Travel size hair spray for quick touch-ups and dryer sheets to combat static from hats/ scarves. They both should fit neatly in a small purse! For New Year’s Eve, a kohl

eyeliner, concealer and lip balm are all you need! You can create a quick smokey eye, brighten up your complexion during the long night and make sure your lips are silky smooth for that kiss at midnight! What hair/makeup products are you excited about for 2016? For makeup, highlighting products! The new trend of strobing will bring a brand new array of products in the new year. Anastasia Beverly Hills just released new powder highlighters that I am obsessed with! You Say It’s Your Birthday?

Be safe and get your birthday suit checked during your birthday month It’s so easy to forget your annual skin exam. The dermatologists at Schweiger Dermatology Group are making it easy for you to remember. On your birthday, set a reminder to call for your skin exam and book the appointment for that month. Full skin exams are fast, painless and could save your life. “Skin cancer is one of the deadliest cancers,” says Dr. Eric Schweiger, founder of Schweiger Dermatology Group. “One in five Americans will develop a skin cancer at some point in their life. The key to our fight against skin cancer is prevention, early detection and treatment.”

What else can you do to prevent skin cancer? Avoid tanning beds and wear sunscreen of SPF 30 on all exposed areas—even in the winter : “Melanoma is one of the few cancers that we know the cause of the overwhelming majority of cases -- UV exposure,” says Dr. Darrell Rigel “A simple behavioral change-- lowering that exposure -- can make a big difference.”

Early Detection is Essential Early diagnosis is crucial with skin cancer, because it can be cured. It’s important to keep in mind that if you’ve previously been diagnosed with skin cancer, seeing a dermatologist every three months is recommended. Give yourself the gift of health and mark your calendar now for a skin screening during your birthday month.

Starting Over After Francine Giordano had bariatric surgery in March 2014, her overall health improved leaps and bounds, but her face was another story. “My face had lost the fullness and youthful appearance it once had and my age was really starting to show,” says Francine. It was time for Francine to take action. After consulting with Monique Olivares, a certified Physician Assistant at Schweiger Dermatology Group, she decided upon a combination of fillers

Francine received injections of Restylane Lyft in her cheeks and around her mouth; Dysport on her forehead, crow’s feet and in between her eyes and Restylane Silk for her lips. “The results so far have been amazing,” she says. “My confidence level has increased greatly and I feel empowered and pretty.”
