HEADINGTON SCHOOL, OXFORD A CAMPAIGN FOR OUR SECOND CENTURY

INSPIRED
It is with great excitement that we announce our plans for a Centenary fundraising campaign at Headington.
H
eadington is already one of the most successful girls’ schools in the UK. I now wish to reinforce this success by fashioning a school ďŹ t to meet the challenges of its second century.
I want Headington to be recognised as an inclusive school where talented girls from all backgrounds and nationalities can coexist and thrive. I also want to enhance our core facilities because our girls and staff deserve the very best environment within which they can work and be inspired. Since our foundation in 1915 successive generations have supported the school with its fundraising. Although many of our facilities are excellent there is still more to do and I am now asking all sections of the School community to support us. My vision for the School is to build on the successes of the past by implementing a compelling development plan to launch our second century. This is an exciting time to be part of the Headington community and I hope you will be inspired by these plans for the future.

MAKING HEADINGTON MORE INCLUSIVE BURSARIES
W
e currently allocate 3.25% of net fee income to bursaries, but we aim to
more than double this figure. We therefore intend to raise the funds required to endow
the first two in a series of Peggy Dunn Bursaries. Our £1 million target would provide two fully-funded places in perpetuity. Our bursary scheme is named after Peggy Dunn, a much-loved headmistress of Headington who left a substantial bequest in her will for bursaries and scholarships. Our aspiration in setting up the Peggy Dunn Bursaries is for any girl with the ability to win a place at Headington to be able to do so, regardless of parental income.

In a first first phase ph development we seek to modernise six laboratories at an individual cost of £50k per laboratory. These will be fully equipped with all the services and specialist equipment required to allow girls to conduct research and experiments in the best possible environment. These new facilities will mirror the quality of laboratories at leading universities.

The art department also offers a number of related subjects such as Photography, Fine Art, Art textiles and History of Art. In addition, the girls benefit from lecturers and specialist tutors who are attracted to Headington by the School’s reputation for exceptional art teaching.
We plan to build the new facility in the space adjacent to the Dining Hall, currently occupied by portacabins. This will be a major new facility for the School for which we are seeking to raise £1m from fundraising.

The current playground facilities have developed in an ad hoc way over time and are unsuitable for use in wet conditions. Our plan is to overhaul the whole area,

REGULAR GIVING Spreading gift payments over a period of time is for many donors the most effective method of making a significant gift to Headington. Gifts may be given monthly or annually. A direct debit form is included in the back of this brochure.
SINGLE GIFT AID For those who prefer to make a single lump sum payment, giving by Gift Aid is the most tax-efficient way of contributing. Gift Aid entitles Headington to reclaim from HMRC the basic rate of income tax you have already paid on your gift. With the basic rate of income tax at 20%, for every £1,000 you donate, Headington will receive an extra £250 at no extra cost to you.
HIGHER AND ADDITIONAL RATE TAX RELIEF If you are a higher (40%) or additional rate (45%) tax payer you can claim tax relief, calculated as the difference between the basic rate of tax (currently 20%) and your tax rate, expressed as a percentage and applied to the total gross value of the gift.
For Example: A higher rate (40%) tax payer gives £1,000 to Headington. Gross value of gift after Gift Aid applied = £1,250. Difference between basic rate (20%) and higher rate (40%) expressed as a percentage = 20%. Multiplied by gross value of gift = 20% x £1,250 = £250 (which can be recovered through your annual tax return). An additional rate (45%) tax payer gives £1,000 to Headington. Gross value of gift after Gift Aid applied = £1,250. Difference between basic rate (20%) and additional rate (45%) expressed as a percentage = 25%. Multiplied by gross value of gift = 25% x £1,250 = £312.50 (which can be recovered through your annual tax return).
DONATIONS BY COMPANIES Companies are able to claim Corporation Tax relief on all donations to charities.
DONATIONS BY/THROUGH CHARITABLE TRUSTS & FOUNDATIONS You may have your own charitable trust through which you wish to make your gift. Although there will be no tax recoverable for the School, it is possible to make recurrent gifts through
such trusts, thus enabling very significant sums to be contributed by means of relatively modest quarterly or annual contributions.
GIFTS OF SHARES Gifts of publicly quoted shares offer the donor the possibility of claiming relief on Capital Gains Tax and Income Tax, which can make such gifts extremely tax-efficient, depending on the donor’s tax position.
DONATIONS FROM THE USA If you wish to make a gift to Headington and take a US Internal Revenue Service income tax deduction, you may make a donation to the British Schools and Universities Foundation (BSUF) expressing a preference for Headington School. BSUF is a charitable organisation recognised by the US Internal Revenue Service under Section 501 (c) (3) of its codes. BSUF was founded more than 40 years ago to enable US residents to support British schools and universities in a tax-efficient manner, and represents more than 200 schools and universities in the UK. Please visit www.bsuf.org for full details of how to make a donation from the USA.

Figures are based on basic rate tax of 20%, additional rate tax of 45% and Corporation tax of 20%. These figures have been rounded to the nearest pound. We offer a number of opportunities for major benefactors to endow named or In Memoriam gifts. We will also consider opportunities for major gifts to be recognised in the form of an appropriate plaque or, for the most significant gifts, a named building or room. SECURING BRIGHT FUTURES
LEGACY GIFTS – THE PEGGY DUNN SOCIETY
I
nspired by a generous bequest from former Headmistress Peggy Dunn, we have established the Peggy Dunn Society to encourage legacy-giving at Headington.
Our aspiration is for any girl with the ability to win a place at Headington to be able to do so, regardless of parental income. It is therefore important that we build up a fund to enable more talented girls from modest backgrounds to enjoy the benefits of a Headington education.
Once you have informed us of your intention to make a legacy gift to Headington, regardless of amount, you will be invited to join the Peggy Dunn Society. The Society meets every second year for a lunch at the School, which provides an opportunity to meet friends as well as to keep up to date with the School’s progress and future plans. It’s an occasion that enables the School to recognise your generosity and to thank you in person. Your Will is an excellent way for you to provide for the people who are important to you, to help causes that you support and to acknowledge the influences that have shaped your life. By making a charitable gift in this way, you can also reduce the total tax liability of your estate to your family. All legacies to Headington are free from Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax.
Please contact the Director of Development on 01865 759874 or by email on development@headington.org if you would like to discuss any aspects of making a legacy gift to Headington.
