PAYSON LODGE #70 HOSTS OUR FIRST STATED MEETING! PAYSON — And a new day is dawning! These words reverberate the feelings of the installed officers and members of one of the newest Research Lodges in Arizona. The first Stated Meeting of Scientia Coronati Research Lodge U.D. kicked off at PAYSON Lodge #70 on the Spring Equinox. As the sun began to set at Payson, the warmth of hospitality never faded as the Order of the Eastern Star Ponderosa Chapter 64 W. Master Richard Skoglund, members were putting the final touches to PAYSON Lodge #70 a fabulous meal. The members of both Lodges enjoyed the meal and the fellowship that this social event produced. Hat’s off to all the behind the scene professionals who made this a first class act!

In the last issue of Arizona Masonry there was an article on the “Grand Orient of the United States”. The article suggested a web site to go visit to find out more about them.

Brother Joe Pendergast and the Grand Stewards Lodge are hard at work planning our Grand Lodge Communication scheduled for June 5-7. This is an excellent opportunity for great fellowship, to renew acquaintances with Brothers you have not seen for awhile, and to help set the direction of Masonry for the future. C O M M E M O R AT I V E P I N C O M I N G S O O N ! Hopefully, the Grand Lodge at this year’s Annual Communication will approve our Lodge of Research for an issuance of a Charter. To commemorate this event, Scientia Coronati will produce a memento. The wonderful people from LAPEL PINS & More, Inc. located in Tucson, AZ have been working with our Secretary on the design and have come up with a very striking keepsake. The pin will indicate the Chartered date and have the Lodge number. It will be a cloisonnÊ pin and issued to all 2008 members in good standing.
Mission Statement Scientia Coronati Research Lodge is committed to the following: Providing an environment where the members can meet to discuss Masonic research, concepts and ideas. Giving each member a forum to improve himself through the delivery of research papers on topics he feels particularly akin to, at a level that will allow him to improve himself and through his improvement, improve the Lodge (s) of which he is a member. Meeting regularly for the purpose of members delivering papers for discussion to improve the understanding of Masonry. Annually publishing proceedings for distribution to the members and to other research organizations. Inviting guest speakers from around the state, nationally and internationally to address our Lodge, thus giving us an expanded view of Masonry. Improving members through Masonry as a "Lifelong learning experience.�

GRAND STEWARDS LODGE OF ARIZONA ASSEMBLE! Our Lodge has been summoned by the Grand Steward’s Lodge of Arizona to actively participate in this year’s Open Communication in Prescott, Arizona. Our participation will be in the form of producing a DVD program focusing on Freemasonry in Arizona. Most of the DVD will focus on the establishment of the very first Arizona Lodge in the territory named AZTLAN Lodge #1. So, what is the Grand Steward’s Lodge? Glad you asked...here is a snapshot. PURPOSE: The Grand Steward’s Lodge of Arizona was created for the main purpose of producing and administering the Grand Lodge Annual Communication (GLAC). MEETINGS: There are no regularly scheduled meetings (monthly or otherwise) of the Lodge. Meeting of the Lodge will be held at the direction of the Master for a specific purpose such as establishing a budget or developing certain elements of the GLAC. The meetings will be at a location chosen by the Master, and those members selected by the Master must attend unless excused. An Annual Meeting is held within 30 days after the GLAC for the purpose of debriefing the production, and for advancing the Officers. All Regular, Associate and Life Members are required to attend the Annual Meeting, unless excused. The incoming Master will determine the Annual Meeting location. Brothers! As you can see, the Grand Steward’s Lodge of Arizona has a great responsibility in ensuring that every GLAC is the best it can. Scientia Coronati Research Lodge is honored and proud to be a part of this important annual event in Arizona Freemasonry.

S C I E N T I A C O R O N AT I R E S E A R C H L O D G E BANNER CONTEST Calling all artists! We need your help to submit your ideas for a Lodge Banner. The goal is to have a banner ready for the next Grand Lodge Annual Communication event. If we have it ready before then, that’s even better!!!! Pictured on this page is a banner that was used by a European Lodge. Our banner does not need to be so elaborate, or does it? You decide by putting your best ideas on paper and sending them to: The Arizona Keystone Banner Idea 773 S. Maple Lane Chino Valley, AZ 86323 Please put your name, mailing address and three color copies of the drawing in a nice envelope. Here are some things to consider when formulating your great ideas about the banner. The banner must have the Lodge name and number on it, the submission must have a separate sheet of paper (8x11, typed) explaining the significance of the banner’s composition (color, symbols, saying, etc.). All submissions must be completed and submitted by 02 January 2009. So you have plenty of time to come up with a fantastic idea that represents the Lodge. All submissions will be considered and graded. The grading criteria considered for each submission will be originality, visual impact and Masonic symbolism. The winning submission will be announced in the Feb/Mar issue of The Arizona Keystone. The brother’s name and picture will be archived with the banner for historical purposes. You do not have to be a member to enter but you must have a member’s signed endorsement with the submission for it to be considered if you are not a member of Scientia Coronati Research Lodge. The banner is a visual symbol of a group that has been the fraternity of the greatest of men for three centuries; that is world wide in its scope, and universal in its welcoming of all faiths and all races; with a fraternity that claims as its members the most imaginative minds and the most successful of men.

H I S TO RY O F S C I E N T I A C O R O N AT I The origin of a Lodge’s name is always interesting reading. The establishment of our name was voted on and passed on March 23, 2007. The following is an excerpt from the original proposal: The name of the Lodge was chosen because of its direct connection with one of the fundamental keystone in Freemasonry. That is to say, the crown keystone -- Knowledge. The word Scientia Croronati means Knowledgeable Crown in Latin. The word “Crown” in our name is symbolic in a few ways. Here is one: The Hebrew mystical study of Kabbalah has on “The Tree of Life” the most important sphere of the ten spheres called “Keter,” or the Crown. It was believed from Keter, the sphere on the very top of the “tree of Life,” all that is flows out and in this sphere (emanation), nothing is in isolation, for nothing can exist on its own. ist. Our Research Lodge cannot exist in isolation, it must be connected to as many other Lodges as possible to ensure a healthy existence. February 22, 2008. Yuma Arizona was the venue for the laying of the cornerstone ceremony at Gila Ridge High School. Faculty and students were greeted by the Grand Lodge of Masons in Arizona and throughout the state. This was a very appropriate day for the ceremony to be conducted because in coincided with George Washington’s Birthday. The Grand Lodge was hosted by Yuma Lodge #17. Grand Master Dave Luebke led his Grand Lodge officers in this ceremony.

EQUINOX AND SOLSTICE Scientia Coronati By-Laws state that Stated Communications shall be held on both Equinoxes (March and September), the Summer Solstice (June), and 7 days prior to the Winter Solstice (December). What is an Equinox and what is a Solstice? My brothers...here for your review is the answer.
EQUINOX Two times of the year when night and day are about the same length. The Sun is crossing the Equator (an imaginary line around the middle of the Earth) and it is an equal distance from the North Pole and the South Pole. SPRING EQUINOX: The first day of the Season of Spring - and the beginning of a long period of sunlight at the Pole. In the northern hemisphere: MARCH 20 (the Sun crosses the Equator moving northward). In the southern hemisphere: SEPTEMBER 22 (the Sun crosses the Equator moving southward). AUTUMN EQUINOX: The first day of the Season of Autumn - and the beginning of a long period of darkness at the Pole. In the northern hemisphere: SEPTEMBER 22 (the Sun crosses the Equator moving southward). In the southern hemisphere: MARCH 20 (the Sun crosses the Equator moving northward).
SOLSTICE SUMMER SOLSTICE: The first day of the Season of Summer. On this day (JUNE 21 in the northern hemisphere*) the Sun is farthest north and the length of time between Sunrise and Sunset is the longest of the year.
WINTER SOLSTICE: The first day of the Season of Winter. On this day (DECEMBER 22 in the northern hemisphere*) the Sun is farthest south and the length of time between Sunrise and Sunset is the shortest of the year. * In the southern hemisphere, winter and summer solstices are exchanged. Summer: December 22. Winter: June 21.
The Newsletter is up and running and looking for writers of articles that stimulate and educate. Since this newsletter is printed quarterly there should plenty of time to get it on print. CAPSTONE - A PROFESSIONAL READING LIST By George E. Weil
Scientia Coronati Research Lodge is committed to educating its members to better empower them with knowledge of the Craft. How do we do that? One way is to create a reading program we have labeled “CAPSTONE.” This program is formed around a building block concept. That means that you build up your knowledge upon the last set of books before you go forward to the next set of books. Therefore, the program is framed around a three tier system. The first tier revolves around 3 books that is fundamental to Master Masons but still essential in building the first foundation. The second tier moves the student from a fundamental focus to a more intermediate study area. This tier requires the study or reading of 5 additional books. The third and final tier is the advanced portion of the reading program. It involves 7 more books which are more advanced for the student and requires more study and a solid footings in the first two tiers of books. Plugging in my calculator reveals that a student will have read a total of 15 books after finishing the CAPSTONE program. So...let’s see the list of books !

RUMORS - THE TEST OF THREE By Socrates (Reprinted from the Southern California Research Lodge F & A. M.)
Please keep this in mind the next time you hear, or about to repeat, a rumor.
In ancient Greece (469-399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom. One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance that ran up to him excitedly and said, “Socrates, do you know what I heard about one of your students?” “Wait a moment,” Socrates replied. “Before you tell me, I’d like you to pass a little test. It’s called the Test of Three.” “Test of Three?” That’s correct, Socrates continued. “Before you talk to me about my student, let’s take a moment to test what you’re going to say. The first test is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure what you are about to tell me is true?” “No,” the man replied, “actually I just heard about it.” All right, said Socrates. “So, you don’t really know if it’s true or not. Now let’s try the second test, the test of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?” “No, to the contrary…” “So, Socrates continued. You want to tell me something bad about him even though you’re not certain it’s true?” The man shrugged, a little embarrassed. Socrates continued. “You may still pass through because there is a third test, the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?” “No, not really.” Well, concluded Socrates, “if what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why tell it to me at all?” The man was defeated and ashamed, and said no more. This is the reason Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.
