Broken Pie Chart: 5 Ways to Build Your Investment Portfolio to Withstand and Prosper in Risky Markets Author Derek Moore Razor Wealth Management LLC, USA

ISBN print 9781787435544 ISBN electronic 9781787435537 (PDF) 9781787439580 (ePub) Publication Date March 2018 Pricing £24.99, US$40.00

Synopsis: Investment outcomes and strategies have changed considerably since 2008. Broken Pie Chart demonstrates the failures of classical diversification and asset allocation, pointing out that the backward-looking methods used by traditional financial professionals will not work moving forward. Derek Moore explains why traditional risk-spreading leads to losses during sell-off periods, and contains risks that many investors do not recognize until it is too late. He also reflects on the changes in the financial market since the global financial crisis, and how these changes may affect your asset allocation and risk management decision-making in a landscape of lower rates and higher risks. With this work, readers can take a fresh look at their portfolios by identifying the emerging asset classes that will lead to investment success, using effective financial strategies to enhance their position, and placing smart floors, hedges and buffers to minimize risk.

Coping with Disaster Risk Management in Northeast Asia: Economic and Financial Preparedness in China, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea Author Gregory Coutaz National Chengchi University, Taiwan ISBN print 9781787430945 ISBN electronic 9781787430938 (PDF) 9781787545076 (ePub) Publication Date March 2018 Pricing £60.00, US$95.00 Format print Hardback Format electronic PDF and ePub Pagination 280

Synopsis: Disaster risk management is of increasing significance in today’s world. Every year, natural disasters cause tens of thousands of deaths and tens of billions of dollars worth of losses. Northeast Asia holds a high propensity for natural disasters, including earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, floods and landslides. Countries in the region have a long history of natural disasters that have devastated populations, cities and their heritage. This book analyzes the diversity of national disaster risk governance across Northeast Asia from the comparative perspective of the national disaster management plans implemented by the governments of China, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea to handle the direct and indirect impacts of natural disasters. It covers the traditional aspects of disaster risk management, but also provides insights into the measures of financial protection required to secure post-disaster resources and strengthen budgetary discipline. Written in an accessible manner, Coping with Disaster Risk Management in Northeast Asia targets a large audience, but is of special interest to policy-makers, public officials, insurance managers and students eager to learn more about disaster risk management in one of the most exposed regions in the world.

Bocconi University, Italy

Synopsis: For many industries, mergers and acquisitions have become the main pathway for reaching strategic objectives like growth, technological leadership, or efficiency in production and distribution. However, the success rate of most M&A deals is low - and flawed. Unrealistic synergies, wrong target selection, culture clashes and, most of all, weak post-merger integration processes pose huge challenges. This book addresses the salient question of how to make M&A deals work. The authors offer readers unique access to each stage of the M&A process, with added depth and perspective provided by Prysmian - the global leader in energy and telecom cables. Prysmian's perspective enables the authors to deliver a manual for successful M&A in mature industries that require high levels of integration between operating companies.

Financial reporting is a strategic means of communication: management has an opportunity to interpret, and the power to deliver, what is materially important to the organization’s stakeholders. Understanding materiality means steering the company in the right direction, and many internal management battles regarding what and how to disclose in external financial reporting run on the verge of materiality. This book offers an integrated perspective of materiality from the angles of accounting (IFRS, US GAAP and SEC Rules and Regulations), auditing, internal control over financial reporting, management commentary, financial analysis, management control, forensic analysis, sustainability reporting, corporate responsibility, assurance standards, integrated reporting, and limited legal considerations. In Materiality in Financial Reporting: An Integrative Perspective, the author adopts a practical, operational approach to show how strategy, processes, and communication can be used to devise a consistent corporate governance system of materiality.

Fundamental British Values in Education: Radicalization, National Identity and Britishness Authors Lynn Revell Canterbury Christ Church University, UK

University of Gloucestershire, UK

Synopsis: This timely book examines the significance of fundamental British Values in education, at a time when the notion of Britishness and national identity in education are under intense focus and scrutiny. It explores the idea of British values as they appear in contemporary policy and legislation as well as the way Britishness as a concept has evolved in relation to education in the post-war period. Part One charts the development of Britishness and British values in the post-war period and shows how even in the recent past British values have been understood and executed in policy in relation to schools in very different ways. In the past Britishness and national identity was either assumed or conveyed through the employment of cultural forms; it is only now that Britishness in education, in the form of fundamental British values is articulated through explicitly political language. Part Two examines the impact of fundamental British values on teacher professionalism. It shows how the legislation and policy that structures the way teachers (and other educators) must engage with fundamental British values works to reposition the status of teachers in the public sphere. Teacher’s work and relationship with the state is recast so that personal political and individual acts are now situated within the remit of state control and legislation.

Sexual Violence on Campus: PowerConscious Approaches to Awareness, Prevention, and Response Author Christina Linder University of Georgia, USA

Synopsis: Campus activists, policymakers, administrators, educators, and legislators have a common goal related to sexual violence on college campuses: make it stop. Despite the common goal, every person invested in ending sexual violence on college campuses has a different strategy or set of strategies for achieving this. Recent legal regulations and political and media pressure have led campus activists, educators, and administrators to overrely on policy and enforcement as strategies to respond to sexual violence. Although policy is an important and necessary component of addressing sexual violence, it should be one component of a comprehensive strategy, rather than the overall strategy. Through a power-conscious lens, this important book will draw on current media coverage and scholarly literature about campus sexual violence to argue that activist and administrators’ over-reliance on policy as a strategy to address sexual violence results in less than effective strategies to prevent it from happening in the first place. Specifically, it will highlight ways scholarship and policy center non heterosexual, cisgender, white women, failing to account for the varied ways students from minoritized populations experience sexual violence. Further, it will illuminate the ways in which current media coverage and scholarship makes perpetrators of sexual violence invisible, resulting in responsibility for ending sexual violence being placed on potential victims.

Women leaders in many parts of the world have leadership opportunities that never existed before as a result of technology, globalization, and demographic shifts that have produced more female graduates than in the past and created a workforce which consists almost 50% of women. Ever more so, in today’s rapidly changing environment, the contexts in which women exercise leadership is critically important in shaping their leadership style. At the same time, objectifying women in contexts such as sports and the media or the patriarchal ideology that permeates contexts such as the military and the church have changed very little. This book, updated and expanded from the 2011 first edition, acknowledges and discusses the belief that the context in which women exercise leadership is critically important in shaping their leadership style.

Synopsis:

ISBN electronic 9781787145252 (PDF) 9781787149618 (ePub)

Whether pushed out to them or pulled in by them, the average person will, on a daily basis, need some type of data, information, knowledge, or wisdom to help their decision-making processes. Intervention is needed to help enable the best choice, and that’s where information professionals and information management (IM) become invaluable. This handbook is divided into three parts: providing a context for approaching the world in which information professionals work; using the Balanced Scorecard to help demonstrate contribution and value; and suggesting opportunities for new areas of employment, ripe for applying the information services skill-set. The economy, organizational politics, copyright, providing efficient and effective services, and demonstrating financial efficacy are addressed, as are big data, text analytics, competitive intelligence, and the synergies between records management, knowledge management, archives, and information services.

Modern projects are confronted with complexity and ambiguity. To provide a holistic framework, this book presents five core elements of a project: project management, project task, stakeholders, resources, and project environment. This model is used to identify the nature of a specific project and to develop appropriate project solutions for business success. This book is organized in two, almost equal parts: a theoretical part that covers the key models and issues related to project management, and a set of appendices, which include a number of tool sheets aimed at providing practical methods, techniques and checklists. By integrating the theoretical and the practical, the authors extend and rethink recent developments in agile and lean approaches to project management.

Synopsis Leading scholars combine their love of The Archers with their specialist subjects, in Custard, Culverts and Cake - a sometimes serious, but most often wry look at the people of Ambridge. A group of Archers Academics take on subjects such as food, geography, social media and faith. There is, naturally, an entire section dedicated to the Helen and Rob storyline. With contributions from members of the Academic Archers network, the book blurs the line between fact and fiction. Each chapter is ‘peer reviewed’ by a different Ambridge inhabitant. Custard, Culverts and Cake gives the reader a deeper understanding of the real life issues covered in the programme, an insight into the residents of Ambridge, and validation that hours of listening to The Archers is, in fact, academic research.

Women vs Feminism: Why We All Need Liberating from the Gender Wars Author Joanna Williams Kent University, UK

Synopsis There’s never been a better time to be a woman. Thanks to those feminists who fought for liberation, young women today have freedom and opportunities their grandmothers could barely have imagined. Girls do better at school than boys and are more likely to go to university. As a result, women are taking more of the top jobs and the gender pay gap has all but disappeared. Yet rather than encouraging women to seize the new possibilities open to them, contemporary feminism tells them they are still oppressed. Women vs Feminism: Why We All Need Liberating from the Gender Wars challenges this stance, unpicking the statistics from the horror stories to explore the reality of women’s lives. It argues that today’s popular feminism is obsessed with trivial issues and focuses on the regulation of male behaviour, rather than female empowerment, pitching men and women against each other in a never-ending gender war that benefits no-one.

Becoming Digital: Toward a Post-Internet Society Author Vincent Mosco Ottawa, Canada

Synopsis: ISBN print 9781787432963 ISBN electronic 9781787432956 (PDF) 9781787436756 (ePub) Publication Date November 2017 Pricing £16.99, US$26.00

Becoming Digital examines the transition from the online world we have known to the Next Internet, which is emerging from the convergence of Cloud Computing, Big Data Analytics, and the Internet of Things. The Cloud stores and processes information in data centers; Big Data Analytics provide the tools to analyse and use it; and the Internet of Things connects sensor-equipped devices everywhere to communication networks that span the globe. These technologies make possible a post-Internet society filled with homes that think, machines that make decisions, drones that deliver packages or bombs, and robots that work for us, play with us, and take our jobs. The Next Internet promises a world where computers are everywhere, even inside our bodies, “coming alive” to make possible the unification of people and machines in what some call the Singularity. This timely book explores this potential as both a reality on the horizon and a myth that inspires a new religion of technology.

The Stalled Revolution: Is Equality for Women an Impossible Dream? Authors Eva Tutchell Education consultant, UK

John Edmonds King’s College London, UK ISBN print 9781787146020

Synopsis:

ISBN electronic 9781787146013 (PDF) 9781787149908 (ePub)

There is a popular illusion that the status of women has improved continuously throughout the past hundred years. In reality most of the progress towards equality has come as a result of the Votes for Women campaign before the First World War and the Women’s Liberation Movement in the 1960s and 1970s. This book will tell the story of the two campaigns, using original material and interviews to convey what it felt like to be in the heart of each movement. The stories are exciting, inspiring and sometimes very funny. However the deeper purpose of 'The Stalled Revolution' is to reveal how the two campaigns achieved success and thus providing answers to many of the dilemmas faced by a new generation of campaigners.

Synopsis: In Theoretical Times Times, Steve Redhead describes the post-crash economic, environmental, political and cultural condition we live in today. As the rise of the international right - Donald Trump, Brexit, Marine Le Pen - swarms the globe, a new global battle within the right is developing: the globalists and neo-liberals versus the economic nationalists and protectionists. What then are the prospects for a resurrected theoretical politics of the left? Theoretical Times considers the work of theorists such as Alain Badiou, Slavoj Žižek, Jean Baudrillard and Paul Virilio, in this innovative reinvention of theory and the politics of theory. After the global financial crash the world is being hollowed out and we find ourselves in what Žižek calls a desperate state of hopelessness, the “new dark ages”. Accelerated culture sees us digitally entertaining ourselves to death but leaves us exhausted and frightened waiting for World War Three. Theoretical Times offers new theoretical resources as a way out of the quicksand.

On 23rd June 2016 the United Kingdom shocked the world by voting to leave the European Union. The results of the EU referendum showed 52% in favour of leaving against 48% who voted to remain. This short book examines why this happened, examining the historical, economic, political, social and cultural reasons that led to the Brexit vote. Putting Brexit in the context of the growth of globalization, neo-liberal capitalism, changes in migration trends and the emergence of populist politics, this book goes beyond the narrow and shallow accounts offered by the media and media-inspired books to provide a rigorous and critical analysis of the most dramatic event to confront contemporary British society since the Second World War.

Riding the Innovation Wave: Learning to Create Value from Ideas Author John Bessant University of Exeter, UK

Synopsis: ISBN print 9781787145702 ISBN electronic 9781787145696 (PDF) 9781787149793 (ePub) Publication Date October 2017

Innovation matters – being able to create value from ideas is crucial to survival and growth. But while any organization might get lucky once being able to repeat the trick requires learning and developing particular ways of working which enable the process. This book draws on a detailed history of a large German company (HELLA ), now active in over 35 countries, employing 34,000 people. It didn't start out that way, it began as an entrepreneurial start-up in the late 19th century in the (then) uncertain early days of the car industry. It moved from selling whips and other buggy accessories for horse-drawn carriages to horns and lamps for the newfangled motor cars beginning to appear on the roads of north-western Germany. The journey since then has been one of innovation – in products and processes, in entering new markets, in adding services to its products, and in changing its underlying business models. Survival for over a hundred years is not an accident – it has been built on learning how to innovate and on constantly challenging and updating those models.
