Aztecs Conquest and Glory Kerry Jimson Who were the Aztecs, how did they become so powerful, and where did they go? This new book traces the Aztec Empire's 200-year span, from its mythical beginings to its abrupt and brutal collapse – and its legacy in presentday Mexico. Led by their gods and leaders, the Aztecs built the awe-inspiring island city of Tenochtitlan, which, at its height, had over 200,000 inhabitants. Berry Boys Portraits of First World War Soldiers and Families Michael Fitzgerald, Claire Regnault A surprise discovery in the 1980s unearthed the remarkable early twentieth century photographs of Berry & Co., now held in Te Papa's collection. Amongst the thousands of mystery images are more than a hundred of ordinary First World War servicemen, taken directly before the men left to fight. But who were they? A heartfelt public response has helped reunite many soldiers with their identities, and careful research has brought more to light. Though these soldiers represent only a tiny fraction of the thousands of men who departed to join the fighting overseas, through their poignant stories we are granted a remarkable lens on New Zealanders' experiences - their hope, anxiety, fear, pride and love - over the span of the Frist World War. Published alongside the TVNZ documentary, Berry Boys features the full collection of beautifully reproduced portraits, accompanied by the unique stories of the soldiers and their loved ones. Some died overseas, others lived long after the war and all were changed by it. Although they are only a fraction of the thousands of men who served, they offer a potent snapshot of the New Zealand of the time - and the changing face of the First World War itself. Imperial Mausoleums and Tombs Resting Places for Imperial Rulers Wang Boyong Imperial Mausoleums and Tombs takes up the art, form, and layout of Chinese imperial mausoleums and tombs, a key element of the Chinese architectural tradition. As Chinese society became more advanced, the Chinese burial tradition grew in complexity. From simple graves to the construction of magnificent imperial mausoleums, the form and design of imperial burial sites were influenced by contemporaneous social conditions, state power, techniques and artistry. Imperial mausoleums were often constructed to simulate imperial palaces, providing a record of the architecture and technology of their time. In addition to the sarcophagus, mausoleums contained carvings, sculptures, paintings, and calligraphy. As a result, sites for emperors’ eternal rest became sacred art treasuries as well. Chinese burial systems were based on the idea that souls would not disappear, and that death meant the beginning of another life. Accordingly, many mausoleums combined spacious and mysterious underground palaces with burial chambers and impressive above-ground structures. The book details the design and construction of many imperial mausoleums and tombs, from the Qin, Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties. New Zealand Art at Te Papa Edited by Dr Mark Stocker Te Papa holds New Zealand’s national art collection, whose origins date back to 1865 and the establishment of the then Colonial Museum (later the Dominion and then the National Museum). Built up over the years by a succession of directors and curators, the collection’s 40,000 works track New Zealand history and the art movements within it. In this generous book, Te Papa’s curators and a wide range of other expert art writers showcase the strengths of the New Zealand art collection by discussing around 270 works. Objects of Veneration an artist's homage to the anonymous artisans of the past Chaim Bezalel The author and artist began collecting small carvings as a child in the 1960's. Only later did he begin to research the religious and cultural meaning behind many of these objects. He began doing a series of paintings of these as well as objects in other collections. The objects, all by anonymous artists, span six thousand years. They are described and put into context as they migrate from their original cultic and religious purpose to their presence in modern day collections. Finally, so as not to be accused of cultural appropriation (though the intent is cultural appreciation and apprehension) the author addresses his own culture which traditionally disdained the veneration of objects but venerates words. Thus an essay called, "The Talmud, a Brief Travelogue" is included, which discusses history, the Bible, and religion in a contemporary and entertaining way. Peter McLeavey The life and times of a New Zealand art dealer Jill Trevelyan From Montana award-winning author Jill Trevelyan comes the first biography of Peter McLeavey, the charismatic, pioneering art dealer who since the 1960s has shaped - even transformed - New Zealand art. McLeavey's personal story is remarkable, but his contemporaries will recognise common themes: the religious upbringing, the struggle to be bohemian in repressive mid-century small town New Zealand, the challenges of marriage and fatherhood, the dilemma of whether to stay or leave New Zealand, and the need to make a mark. Through exclusive access to McLeavey's extensive and hitherto untapped archive of letters, diaries, exhibition files and more, this book offers insights into the artists McLeavey has represented across half a century. Here, in their own words - lively, salty, and often heart-breaking - are Colin McCahon, Toss Woollaston, Len Lye, Milan Mrkusich, Bill Hammond, Gordon Walters, Michael Illingworth, Robin White, Richard Killeen, John Reynolds, Yvonne Todd and many more. Far more than a simple biography, this is the big story of contemporary New Zealand art itself, in a period of massive change and growth, and Trevelyan offers an utterly fresh and compelling historical account of the birth of the modern art market and the status of art today. A must-read for anyone interested in New Zealand's art, culture or recent history. PB 9780987668844 £49.99 October 2013 Te Papa Press 492 pages 200+ colour & b/willus

Tatau A History of Samoan Tattooing Sean Mallon, Sébastien Galliot The Samoan Islands are virtually unique in that tattooing has been continuously practised with indigenous techniques: the design of the full male tattoo, the pe'a, has evolved in subtle ways since the nineteenth century, but remains as elaborate, meaningful and powerful as it ever was. This richly illustrated cultural history is the first publication to examine 3000 years of Sāmoan tatau. Through a chronology vivid with people, encounters and events, it describes how Sāmoan tattooing has been shaped by local and external forces over many centuries. It argues that Sāmoan tatau has a long history of relevance both within and beyond Sāmoa, and a more complicated history than is currently presented in the literature. The Gurdjieff Movements A Communication of Ancient Wisdom Wim van Dullemen Scores of books exist about the life and teachings of the Russian spiritual visionary G.I. Gurdjieff (~1866-1949), yet few devote significant coverage to the Gurdjieff Movements. These several-hundred precise and mostly asymmetrical gestures, arranged into detailed choreographies for groups of practitioners, were designed by Gurdjieff himself. This new book reconsiders the eminent role of the Movements, revealing them as a vital yet often-neglected component in the transmission of Gurdjieff’s legacy. Van Dullemen, whose first Movements’ teacher received her instruction from Gurdjieff himself, is in a unique position to offer background, theory and first-hand experience about this subject. He is a professional musician and a long-time practitioner of the Gurdjieff work who trained in these Movements and served as a master accompanist for the practice for over thirty years. No book can teach the Movements, the author clearly asserts. And, he makes no such attempt here. Far from an instruction manual, this book offers invaluable insight into and greater understanding of the whys and wherefores of this fourth arm of the vast teaching that comprises Gurdjieff’s complete communication: his books, his oral teachings, his music and finally his Movements. Along with fascinating stories of his own journey of discovery, van Dullemen has skillfully integrated: autobiographical descriptions of the master Gurdjieff; interviews with direct pupils of Gurdjieff; diligent research within a wide range of firsthand sources; descriptions of the scientific, cultural and social climate during Gurdjieff’s time, and; the relationship between these and his teaching. The book is also a rare accomplishment. While highly authoritative, it is nonetheless written in a direct style with clear language, making it accessible to the public at large who may have interest, but little background, in this esoteric science and practice. The Twelve Tribes a meditation on art, prophecy, and poetry Chaim Bezalel, Yonnah Ben Levy This book contains words and pictures relating to two different but related art collaborations, Bowls of Blessing (2011) and Urim and Thummim (1991). The "Bowls of Blessing" series consists of twelve ceramic bowls containing both images and words that have been embedded into the glaze. Each bowl is unique, each made from an eleven kilo sack of clay. The bowls illuminate, through original photographs and text in English and Hebrew, excerpts from Genesis 49, which consists of Jacob’s blessings over his twelve sons, the progenitors of the twelve tribes of Israel. These words and pictures have been fired into the glaze with laser decals. Each bowl is pictured and described on a full page or two. Many of the sayings whether of Jacob over his sons, or of Moses over their descendants, the twelve tribes of Israel, are mysterious, leading to intersting questions and observations about the meaning of Israel. Regarding the "Urim and Thummim portion, nobody knows what the Urim and Thummim even were physically, nor their method. They served as an oracle through which the nation got direction and specific answers to their queries. The artists created 12 panels, each with 12 images and surrounding illuminations following the pattern of the breastplate of the High Priest as described in the Bible This is an art book that is based on the Bible, and on particular portions of the Bible which are poetic and evocative. Sometimes art steps in where language leaves off. PB 9780999595831 £17.95 April 2018 Dekel Press 51 pages 50 illus

Walter Launt Palmer Maybelle Mann This definitive biography and catalog raisonne of Walter Launt Palmer discusses his personal and creative life in great detail. The personal history of this twentieth century painter has been derived from never before used primary sources. Information from Palmer's diaries, letters, and personal scrapbooks has been correlated with insight and enthusiasm to present a very human picture of the artist, who was a contemporary of John Singer Sargent and William Merrit Chase. A student of Frederick Church, and a friend of Teddy Roosevelt and Henry Flagler, Palmer has often been compared to Corot. Yet his style is uniquely his own. The text and catalog raisonne combine to cover the entire scope of Palmer's oeuvre-tracing his experiments with style from academicism to impressionism. Although Palmer was hailed as the "painter of the American winter", his other works were noteworthy as well. HB 9780887400018 £33.00 February 1997 Schiffer Publishing 192 pages 258 photos

Biography & Memoirs A Fractured Life A Memoir Shabnam Samuel Abandoned by her parents as a three-year-old, and ultimately leaving her home country India for a new life in America as a young mother of a three-year-old son, this is not only an immigrant's story, but a poignant and powerful memoir that is at first, one of sadness and continuing adversity, but ultimately one of strength, purpose, and the universal triumph of hope. It is a story of dislocation, disruption, and despair, and brings focus to the silencing of girlhood and womanhood and how with time, love, and support we can work our way out of that silence. Shabnam Samuel was twenty-seven when she moved to the US, carrying with her a troubled marriage, an almost estranged husband, and a three-year-old son. Hoping to create a fresh start from everything that was holding her down, it took Shabnam twenty-five years of trials and tribulations to finally find her voice, her strength, and her place in this world. Amazing Jewish Heroes David Richard Goldberg There have been many amazing heroes down through the ages. The achievements of American heroes like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln certainly resonate, but how many heroes of Jewish heritage come to mind? Each of the eleven Jewish heroes presented in this volume, some famous and others less so, overcame tremendous challenges to achieve greatness, persevering through their faith in God and belief in freedom and human dignity. Queen Esther maintained her traditions in the house of Ahasuerus for nine years while also hiding her true origins, and then orchestrated the salvation of the Jewish Persians at great personal risk. When urgent funding was needed for the Continental Army in 1781, General George Washington turned to none other than a financial genius named Haym Salomon. Felix Zandman survived World War II as a teenager by living with three others in a pit for seventeen months, and then went on to graduate from the Sorbonne and found a company that was innovational in the world of electronics and communication. Our heroes many feats and great accomplishments, and their dedication to freedom and its ideals, are truly amazing, and their stories stand the test of time. Cocktail Noir From Gangsters and Gin Joints to Gumshoes and Gimlets Scott M Deitche Catering to lovers of the well-written word and the well-mixed drink, Cocktail Noir is a lively look at the intertwining of alcohol and the underworld?represented by authors of crime both true and fictional and their glamorously disreputable characters, as well as by real life gangsters who built Prohibition-era empires on bootlegged booze. It celebrates the potent potables they imbibed and the watering holes they frequented, including some bars that continue to provide a second home for crime writers. Highlighting the favourite drinks of Noir scribes, the book includes recipes for cocktails such as the Gimlet described in Raymond Chandler’s The Long Goodbye, the Mojito Mulatta T J English drank while writing Havana Nocturne and the Dirty Martini favored by mob chronicler Christian Cippolini. The book also lets us in on the drinking habits of notorious organised crime figures, revealing Al Capone’s taste for Templeton Rye, Meyer Lansky’s preference for Dewar’s Scotch and Gambino family hit man Charles Carneglia’s habit of guzzling Cutty Sark. With illustrations throughout, Cocktail Noir is as stylish and irreverent as the drinks, often larger-than-life figures and culture it explores. Business Be Chief It's a Choice, Not a Title Rick Miller Conventional wisdom about Chiefs and power is all wrong. It says Chiefs are special. Chiefs are chosen. Chiefs have titles. And only those at the top have the power to be Chief. But today, reports indicate that 7 in 10 workers are not giving 100% on the job. Why? Mostly, they feel powerless. Researchers estimate the cost of this lost productivity at over $500B annually. We need a new way to think about Chiefs and power, and we need new tools to create powerful organizations. To Rick Miller, being Chief has nothing to do with position or title. And power has nothing to do with authority or control. Rather, Rick defines a Chief as anyone who fully and enthusiastically connects what they do to who they are, personally and professionally. Rick defines power in terms of the clarity, energy, and impact we can all choose to build. Miller is a different kind of turnaround specialist who has led million- and billion-dollar organizations that have unlocked employee productivity, tripled growth rates, and delivered sustainable growth using a strategy to cultivate teams of powerful Chiefs. As a student-teacher and a player-coach Miller, shares strategies that work for Chiefs at all levels. PB 9781628655247 £19.00 / HB 9781628655278 £28.00 September 2018 Motivational Press 200 pages

MiniScript Shorthand Leonard Levin Existing shorthand systems (Gregg, Pitman, Teeline) provide non-alphabetical symbols or outlines to increase the writing speed. A number of writing strokes is significantly reduced and a high speed can be attained. However, a great deal of time must be spent on memorization and retention is difficult if you decide to use Gregg, Pitman, Teeline and similar symbol-based methods. On the other hand, speedwriting methods use alphabet letters and are easier to learn. But they require two or three strokes to write a standard letter and can not match a writing speed attainable by non-alphabetical shorthand. The MiniScript system is non-alphabetical version of the EasyScript method and designed to simplify learning and provide a high writing speed comparable to symbolbased shorthand and. EasyScript was introduced in 1990 and has become a viable alternative in the United States and worldwide for those who prefer to utilize alphabet-based speedwriting. MiniScript employs: a) a proven and popular EasyScript alphabet-based abbreviation methodology that reduces considerably the memorization volume by using a small set of abbreviating rules and b) writing abbreviations with special symbols to attain writing speeds comparable to non-alphabetical shorthand. Applying MiniScript you will need to remember only a list of 9 special symbols representing English alphabet. Symbols from conventional PC keyboard such as period (.), slash (/), comma (,) are used and require little or no training. EasyScript book is not required to study MiniScript. Chess The Longest Game The Five Kasparov – Karpov Matches for the World Chess Championship Jan Timman One of the greatest rivalries in sports history. On 10 September 1984, Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov started their match for the World Chess Championship in Moscow. The clash between the reigning champion and his brazen young challenger was highly anticipated, but no one could have foreseen what was in store. In the next six years they would play five matches for the highest title and create one of the fiercest rivalries in sports history. The matches lasted a staggering total of 14 months, and the ‘two K’s’ played 5540 moves in 144 games. The first match became front-page news when after five months FIDE President Florencio Campomanes stepped in to stop the match for reasons that still remain mysterious. A new match was staged and 22-year-old Garry Kasparov became the youngest World Chess Champion in history. His win was not only hailed as a triumph of imaginative attacking chess, but also as a political victory. The representative of ‘perestroika’ had beaten the old champion, a symbol of Soviet stagnation. Kasparov defended his title in three more matches, all of them full of drama. In The Longest Game Jan Timman chronicles the many twists and turns of this fascinating saga. He includes his behindthe scenes impressions and takes a fresh look at the games. Rufus the Numbat David Miller Rufus the Numbat walks out of the bush at the front of the book back into the bush at the end of the book. Rufus does not care for things of the town like cappuccinos or cream cake, or for the town and its parade and noise. But on his way Rufus startles a cyclist and later a Chinese Dragon creating all sorts of mayhem. David Miller’s minimalist text contrasts with his detailed paper sculptures set over pen and ink backgrounds. Reversing the typical roles of humans and animals, David Miller’s imaginative tale challenges us to ponder what would happen if animals infringed on the lives of humans. This lively picture book introduces young readers to the fragile relationship between humans and animals, as well as strong themes about respecting animal habitats and behaviours, the effect of humans encroaching on the habitats of our native animals and the place of animals in our ever-expanding built world. The only person who ever seems to notice Finley is her best friend and godparents' son, Oliver Bertram. Since Finley moved in with her godparents after the death of her father, she and Oliver have grown close. If Finley could just take Oliver's constant encouragement to heart and step out of the shadows, she'd finally chase her dream of joining the prestigious Mansfield Theater. As Emma and Oliver grow closer, Finley realizes that Harlan's attention is shifting to her. She discovers she might have feelings for him too. Computing Game Changer AlphaZero's Groundbreaking Chess Strategies and the Promise of AI Matthew Sadler, Natasha Regan, Garry Kasparov, Demis Hassabis It took AlphaZero only a few hours of self-learning to become the chess player that shocked the world. The artificial intelligence system AlphaZero had been fed nothing but the rules of the Royal Game when it beat the world’s strongest chess engine in a prolonged match. The selection of ten games published in December 2017 created a worldwide sensation: how was it possible to play in such a brilliant and risky style and not lose a single game against an opponent of superhuman strength? For Game Changer, Matthew Sadler and Natasha Regan investigated more than two thousand previously unpublished games by AlphaZero. They also had unparalleled access to its team of developers at DeepMind and were offered a unique look ‘under the bonnet’ to grasp the depth and breadth of AlphaZero’s search. Sadler and Regan reveal its thinking process and tell the story of the human motivation and the techniques that created AlphaZero. Game Changer also presents a collection of lucidly explained chess games of astonishing quality. Both professionals and club players will improve their game by studying AlphaZero’s stunning discoveries in every field that matters: opening preparation, piece mobility, initiative, attacking techniques, long-term sacrifices and much more. The story of AlphaZero has a wider impact. Game Changer offers intriguing insights into the opportunities and horizons of Artificial Intelligence. Nemesis A Novel of Old California Joe Yogerst Forget Deadwood, Dodge, and Tombstone, the biggest, baddest boomtown of the 1880s was San Diego, California. The attraction wasn't gold or silver but cheap land, the promise of an oceanfront paradise where it never snows and rarely rains, and the too-good-to-be-true deals offered by local real estate merchants. In the wake of bonafide settlers came the hucksters, con artists, and snake oil vendors -- so many flimflam men (and women) that those duped called the town "Scam Diego". Abetting the crime and chaos was the nearby Mexican border, a convenient refuge for the rustlers, ex-Rebels, and banditos who floated back and forth across the unmarked frontier. Caught up in this perfect storm are two men: U.S. Marshal Cradoc Bradshaw and San Diego Times reporter Nicholas Pinder. Best friends growing up, Bradshaw and Pinder are now sworn enemies -- all because of a woman. Having once cooperated to catch bad guys, Bradshaw and Pinder now compete -- Pinder with his quill pen or Bradshaw with his sawed-off shotgun and Colt single action Army revolver. The competition heats up when someone starts killing the town's movers and shakers. As the bodies pile up, the question becomes which of the former friends will track down the killer first? Raising the Baton Bruce Herschensohn When Christopher Straw was a little boy in Fort Littleton, PA, he wanted to be the first man to land on the moon. That was before the advent of Astronauts. He never reached the moon but when he grew up he was heavily involved in the new industry of US space exploration. When Anna Lane was a little girl in Charleston, SC she craved to have a career as an actress who would have roles singing and dancing on Broadway and in Hollywood movies. She achieved those goals early with the addition of being in a new medium called television. When Raj Bhavnani was a little boy living on the outskirts of Sholapur, India, he wanted to appear knowledgeable in any and all things with the objective of becoming a world leader. To have such a triumph, he wanted to travel to lands beyond India. As an adult, many of his passions became realized. Raising the Baton is written as though the reader is in a firstrow seat at a concert and the conductor has taken his standing position at the podium. He faces the orchestra; his back to the audience, and with one stroke the baton is watched by all those in attendance. The fuller and unlimited meaning for the three major figures is recorded within the book. HB 9780825308864 £15.00 November 2018 Beaufort Books 275 pages

Seeking Hyde Thomas Reed Thomas Reed's debut novel, Seeking Hyde, recounts the fascinating history of Robert Louis Stevenson's epic horror story, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It is the tale of a young author defying his father's wishes by becoming a spinner of romantic yarns. It is the tale of his American wife, ten years older than he, driving her husband hard to write one more great novel before his chronic lung disease carries him away. It is the tale of Stevenson reeling under charges from the mother of an old friend that he had fueled her son's fatal alcoholism through his recklessly Bohemian ways. Seeking Hyde sticks closely to the biographical record as Robert Louis Stevenson struggles to write another book to be the successor to Treasure Island. After the infamous two characters, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, take form in a dream, Stevenson writes passionately for three days, convinced that he has crafted his masterpiece. His wife Fanny, a willful and demanding gypsy, offers a scathing critique, obliging him to start over from the beginning. While the revised tale is published to great acclaim, it is ultimately blamed for inspiring a gruesome series of murders in London's East End. From that tragic historical irony, Seeking Hyde moves beyond the actual story of how Jekyll and Hyde came to be to explore the realm of "what if?" Desperate to address his own guilt, Stevenson enters the dark underworld of Victorian London. As he follows a twisted path through this midnight landscape, the author-turned-detective wrestles with the social demons of prostitution, police corruption, and the hypocrisy of powerful menâ€ultimately coming face-to-face with Jack the Ripper himself. The Happiness Glass Carol Lefevre But what did teenage girls in country towns want with Latin and French and art? What use would it be to them? The literary longings of a studious girl born into a working class family, hot afternoons in a dust-plain Wilcannia schoolhouse; the temptation to stay, and the perils of breaking free — The Happiness Glass reflects complex griefs in the life of Lily Brennan. Lily’s story allows the author to navigate some of the difficulties of memoir, and out of its bittersweet blend of real, remembered, and imagined life, the portrait of a writer gradually emerges. In fiction that forms around a core of memory, life writing that acknowledges the elusiveness of truth, Carol Lefevre has written a remarkable, risk-taking book that explores questions of homesickness, infertility, adoption, and family estrangement, in Lily Brennan’s life, and in her own. History German Eagles in Spanish Skies The Messerschmitt Bf 109 in Service with the Legion Condor during the Spanish Civil War, 1936-39 David Johnston Willy Messerschmitt's Bf 109 is among the most famous fighter aircraft in the history of military aviation, and it was during the Spanish Civil War that it first saw combat. Hathor’s Alchemy The Ancient Egyptian Roots of the Hermetic Art Alison M Roberts When alchemy emerged in Roman Egypt, early adepts knew their wisdom came from the Egyptian temples. Yet these deep roots in ancient Egypt have remained obscure, doubted even by many. Journeying through the beautiful temples at Abu Simbel and Dendara, dedicated to the love goddess Hathor, and delving into the Osirian mysteries enshrined in Ramesses VI’s tomb at Thebes, Hathor’s Alchemy unearths this transformational lost knowledge. Greek, Islamic and medieval European alchemists all drew on its ‘wisdom of the queen’, including the authors of Aurora consurgens and the Rosarium philosophorum. Explored, too, is alchemy’s profound influence in Sufism. Richly illustrated in colour throughout, this groundbreaking book reunites ancient Egypt and alchemy within the western Hermetic tradition. Real Modern Everyday New Zealand in the 1950s and 1960s Bronwyn Labrum The decades of the 1950s and ’60s continue to exert a powerful fascination, as seen in the lasting popularity of Mad Men, Crown Lynn collectibles and mid-century design. In New Zealand, these years have been remembered in popular culture as a ‘golden age’ of God, Queen and Country, full employment, the baby boom, Sir Edmund Hillary and ‘Ladies, a plate!’ – as well as the birth of the teenager and the seedbed of later change. But what was life really like? Real Modern tells a vibrant and varied story of real life in this compelling era through images and, above all, objects. The Chinese Literary Canon Yu Quiyu In The Chinese Literary Canon, one of China’s most brilliant critics puts three millennia of Chinese writing in its proper historical context. He shows us what to read and how to read it. Yu Qiuyu traces a bright line of the very best literature that China has produced: from the first carvings on bone, through the first poems, the first philosophers, the greatest historian, to the ultimate stylists of the Tang Dynasty and beyond. And because brilliant literature is always a product of its time and place, Yu tells us about the men who did the writing and the worlds in which they lived. Most of all, Yu tells us about the ideas that motivated them, how they read the writers of the past, and how each writer of genius transformed and added his own stamp to the literary canon. The Yellow Emperor, the Book of Poetry, Confucius and Laozi, the great historian Sima Qian, Cao Cao, Kumarajiva, Li Bai, Du Fu, Cao Xueqin… Their thread weaves in and out of the history of the first Chinese, the Warring States, the unification under Qin, the destructive split into the Three Kingdoms, and the cosmopolitan Tang Dynasty. All of this history is interpreted and presented in the warm, distinctive voice of a truly great reader, Yu Qiuyu. HB 9781627740920 £26.00 May 2016 CN Times Books Inc. 456 pages

Cultivating Spiritual Maturity The Courage to Practice Lalitha Thomas The much-needed message of this book is that spiritual practice is not a weekend hobby or an activity for adolescent seekers (of any age). Instead, Lalitha makes a case for mature spirituality, which evolves from a serious commitment to the Path, and assumes dignity, integrity and personal responsibility for one’s life choices. She proposes a series of questions that matter... including: What Path Are You Really On? What Are You Seriously Committed to? What Do You Call Love? Are You on Your Deathbed? The playing field of spiritual maturity can never be separate from one’s everyday life -- one’s work, relationships, art, physical limits, suffering, aging and dying -- Lalitha affirms. And, it will always reflect a sacred regard for the highest principles (one’s aim), along with gratitude for what is, and kindness, generosity and compassion toward others. Lalitha is a spiritual teacher and a farmer -- her ashram in BC is also a working organic farm. She knows the disciplined efforts needed to prepare a ground for planting, to nurture and maintain young shoots, to guard against predators and to harvest a mature crop. As a long-term spiritual practitioner, she has worked with students for over twenty years. She knows the risks, the sweat and the fruits of the spiritual path. Full of practical help, her book cites dozens of examples relative to spiritual authority, doubt and confusion, a life of practice, and the facing and embracing of death ... as well as other issues that matter! She is the author of Waking to Ordinary Life, and several books on health and healing. PB 9781942493358 £17.00 June 2018 Hohm Press 192 pages

Accidents of Composition Merlinda Bobis The eyes catch a black bird close to an eerie sun. Instantly, a poem: an accident of composition. Or a tree, rock, light from a story heard, dreamt, read or remembered returns as if it were the only tree, rock, light in the planet. The poet is caught, returned to her first heart: poetry. after four novels, Merlinda offers seventy-six poems from the stillness of contemplation to the spinning of tales, then to passage across different histories. Glass becomes eternal greens underwater, fish gossip about colonisation, a gumnut turns dissident, and the dreams of Captain Cook and Pigafetta circumnavigate the globe leaving a trail of blood, beads, and the scent of cloves. But between, the port hopes: 'there could be accidents of kindness here.' In her latest collection of poetry, award-winning author Merlina Bobis traces the accidents of art and life. Drawing on the journal of Pigafetta whose writings have become an accident of history, Merlinda Bobis composes with an attuned ear and her poems are rich with imagery; breath and heart. Purdy wrote over three dozen collections of poems, two memoirs and a novel, and edited four anthologies. He was awarded the Governor General's Literary Award for poetry twice. He was an officer of the Order of Canada and a member of the Order of Ontario. China Threat? The Challenges, Myths and Realities of China's Rise Lionel Vairon From the long-term threat of nuclear war between the United States and China, to the disappearance of the African elephant due to Chinese demand for ivory, each week brings a new round of critique and denunciation of the risks China poses to the stability of the entire planet. While critics raise a certain number of fundamental questions that bear asking about this nascent superpower, the answers put forth are usually based on ideological or economic considerations. Lionel Vairon systematically challenges these views in this updated edition of China Threat? With an incisive review of China’s economic strategy, deployment of resources, national defense, political reform, ethnicity and religion, terrorism, and developments in human rights, Vairon amply demonstrates that China poses no threat to the world. On the contrary, China Threat? shows that China’s peaceful rise should be a matter of positive news across the globe. The Xi Jinping Era His Comprehensive Strategy Toward the China Dream Tan Huosheng, Zhou Xingwang China's development has entered a new phase since the era of Mao and Deng Xiaoping. Its GDP has grown to more than 10 trillion US dollars, twice that of Japan’s and close to that of the United States; and Chinese diplomacy has taken on a more active profile as the nation moves towards superpower status on the world stage. At the same time, all of this has resulted in serious ecological problems, and as the economy develops social contradictions are growing more prominent within the country. Xi Jinping, who became General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party in 2012, has developed a new philosophy of governance to confront these challenges. The result is a 30-year plan that is the roadmap to The China Dream, which has led to various programs such as the ongoing campaigns to address and eliminate corruption within the CCP and reform of the Military; Market reforms and the Belt and Road Initiatives meant to improve domestic infrastructure and broaden Chinese economic influence on the world stage; and the evolution of a new approach to foreign relations. In addition to an analysis by leading Chinese thinkers of the elements of this plan and its implementation, an overview of Xi’s early career and the first two years of his leadership provide readers a look at his thinking and how it has developed and provides a preview of what we might expect from China in the Xi Jinping Era. He was the first person who contended that the Bible, Targum Onkelos, and the other Aramaic translations of the Bible contained mystical teachings. In this volume, Dr. Drazin reveals some unusual and generally unknown facts about the revered sage and demonstrates that his mystical notions and his stands on issues such as medicine, magic, astrology, divination, life after death, the land of Israel, women, angels, hell, demons, and even God are not the normative views of most modern Jews. This fresh look at one of Judaism’s most venerated sages asks and answers provocative questions on the nature of Nachmanides’ work and its role in Jewish thought. Society & Culture From Moon Cakes to Mao to Modern China An Introduction to Chinese Civilization Zhu Fayuan, Gao Han, Wu Qixin To understand China, we need to step into the palace of her culture and explore her rich history. With this in mind, a group of scholars from China and America have put this book together as a kind of primer on all things China, from art and science to religion and society. They have tried to offer here a panoramic view of the totality of Chinese culture, using only the most representative material, to introduce to the West the most typical aspects of Chinese civilization and life. Xi Jinping's China Renaissance Ying Cheng, Tan Huosheng, Zhou Xingwang Under Xi Jinping’s governance, he has brought order out of chaos: making radical reforms, exercising diligence, putting forward a series of new ideas, new thoughts and new governing strategies. He’s quickly established a system of strategic governance, and is sounding the call for a Chinese Renaissance that will move forward to all the developed countries. Xi Jinping's China Renaissance: Historical Mission and Great Power Strategy is the most important issue in the 21st century of human history as well as the most significant historical event in China’s five thousand years. What are China’s developing trends in the next 30 years? What is the interaction from China under the leadership of Xi Jinping to the world? This book for the first time makes it clear that Xi Jinping's historical missions are: to complete the three leading ideals of Chinese governance -- the governance of the ruling party, nation and the global community; to avoid two pitfalls -- the middle-income trap and Thucydides’ Trap (where a rising power causes fear in an established power which escalates to war); to achieve a big leap -- to jump over from the developing to developed countries and achieve the great renaissance of the Chinese nation. Like Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, Xi Jinping is influencing the course of Chinese history, and his renaissance strategy will have a vast and far-reaching impact on China and the world. Xi Jinping's China Renaissance: Historical Mission and Great Power Strategy describes how Xi Jinping will complete this arduous historical mission; explains his strategic system; analyzes Xi Jinping’s major decisions on governance, governing logic, and governing features on hot issues of worldwide public concern, such as China’s world economic restructuring, party reform, military reform, judicial reform, fight against corruption, ecological reconstruction, China's global governance program. This book clearly defines that the nature of China's rise is the revival of Eastern civilization in the era of globalization. China’s rise will exert an influence and appeal to moral and cultural cohesion. China will play the role in the global order by soft power and innovation, instead of seeking super power status. The whole world can benefit from the opportunities in China, without the need to worry about the "China threat". HB 9781627740302 £76.00 July 2016 CN Times Books Inc. 250 pages
