Iran

The True Dream

Stuck in Transition Anoushiravan Ehteshami, University of Durham, UK Series: The Contemporary Middle East This book is the first comprehensive analytical study of the forces which have been shaping and changing modern Iran and its relations with the rest of the world. It looks at the roots of the 1979 revolution and the forces unleashed during the modernization process under the Pahlavi monarchy. Applying a range of theoretical approaches to understanding the Islamic republic’s neo-authoritarian political system, Anoushiravan Ehteshami reflects on how the country’s new elite emerged and how these new political forces have changed Iran, the stresses on its political system, the forces shaping the country’s political economy, and the Islamic republic’s international relations. Indictment of the Shiite clerics of Isfahan, an English translation with facing Persian Text Edited by Ali-Asghar Seyed-Gohrab, Leiden Institute for Area Studies and Sen McGlinn Series: Iranian Studies The True Dream is a Persian satirical drama set in Isfahan in the lead up to Iran’s Constitutional Revolution of 1905-1911. This book has the Persian and English translation on facing pages. The introduction presents brief biographies of the authors – who wrote anonymously, but were all executed. One of the authors was the father of Mohammad-Ali Jamâlzâdeh, a pioneer of modern Persian fiction, and The True Dream was one of the first dramas, in European style, to be written in Persian. The book shows that today’s struggle for a modern society began more than a century ago, and then and now pivots on the role of the Islamic clerics (the ulama). Popular Iranian Cinema before the Revolution Family and Nation in Filmfarsi Pedram Partovi Series: Iranian Studies This book sheds light on the prolific but little studied Iranian popular cinema of the 1960s and 70s. Critics generally dismiss such films, best known for their songs and melodramatic plots, as shallow, derivative entertainment. The sarcastic moniker filmfarsi (“Persian film”) was even employed to refer to the popular cinema, asserting its marginality in Iran and the international film world. Yet this book argues that many filmfarsi titles had a cognitive and emotional appeal that relied on their ability to re-articulate “traditional” aesthetic and religious ideas and forms to problematize the modernist agenda of secular nationalist elites. Post-conflict transition in Lebanon The disappeared of the civil war Lyna Comaty Series: Routledge Studies in Middle Eastern Society The book adopts a political sociological and anthropological approach to look at periods of transition from conflict to peace in Lebanon after the civil war (1975-1990). It principally looks at answering why many issues related to the civil war are still lingering and unresolved 25 years after the end of violence. Through the unresolved question of those who disappeared during the war, the book induces a set of questions about the social and political system in a country in transition. It delves precisely into the notion of the transition from conflict to peace in Lebanon by taking the issue of the estimated 17000 disappeared of the civil war as a case study. A History of the Arab State of Zanzibar

Explorers of Arabia

Norman R. Bennett Series: Routledge Library Editions: History of the Middle East During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the fertile islands of Zanzibar and Pemba became of central importance to East Africa’s growing contact with the international economy as the ruling dynasty encouraged trade in cloves, slaves and ivory. This book, first published in 1978, provides an account of the history of Zanzibar from those early days of trade up to independence and the Revolution that removed the Arab ruling class in 1964.

From the Renaissance to the End of the Victorian Era Zahra Freeth and H.V.F. Winstone Series: Routledge Library Editions: History of the Middle East Exploration usually demands the qualities of bravery, curiosity and organising ability. Arabia demanded more of the voyager: linguistic ability of a high order, scholarship and an imaginative temperament. It was also necessary to be able to pass as a native, if not of Arabia then of part of the Islamic world. The early explorers faced untold dangers, travelling in a region riven by religious and tribal conflict. This book, first published in 1978, presents the carefully selected accounts of some remarkable travellers, ranging from the Renaissance to the Victorian era, all of whom have added considerably to our knowledge of the history and culture of Arabia. A Short History of the Middle East

Modern Jordan

From the Rise of Islam to Modern Times

Judge Gerald Sparrow Series: Routledge Library Editions: Jordan

George E. Kirk Series: Routledge Library Editions: History of the Middle East This book, first published in 1948, grew out of a series of lectures delivered since the War at the Middle East Centre for Arab Studies to British students who required a solid grounding in Middle East history and politics to assist in fitting them for active careers in the region. These lectures, by a leading specialist on Middle Eastern history, generated such interest that they were adapted and published in book form for a wider reading public. The book forms a comprehensive introduction to the history of the Middle East.

This book, first published in 1961, covers the whole range of the Hashemite kingdom, its king, its government, the people, the land, industry, the armed forces and the rich history of the country. The aim of this book is to present a living picture of a live and virile people linked by language, blood and faith to the other Muslim lands, and in doing so present a snap-shot of the country in the middle of the twentieth century. Arab History and the Nation-State

On Both Banks of the Jordan

A Study in Modern Arab Historiography 1820-1980

A Political Biography of Wasfi al-Tall

Youssef M. Choueiri, University of Manchester, UK Series: Routledge Library Editions: History of the Middle East

Asher Susser Series: Routledge Library Editions: Jordan

This book, first published in 1989, discusses the development of modern Arab historiography and its study of the nation-state in the nineteenth century, and analyses the work of three contemporary Arab historians from Egypt, the Lebanon and Morocco. An important and highly readable account, it reaffirms the importance of historiography and proposes a revision of the manner in which modern Arab thought has hitherto been classified and interpreted.

To a large extent the history of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has been shaped by the interaction between Jordan and Palestine and between Jordanians and Palestinians. This book, first published in 1994, discusses this relationship during one of its most critical phases, through the prism of the biography of one of the main actors in this saga, a Prime Minister in the 1960s and early 70s, Wasf al-Tall.

Politics and the Military in Jordan

Territorial Foundations of the Gulf States Edited by Richard Schofield, King's College London Series: Routledge Library Editions: History of the Middle East

A Study of the Arab Legion, 1921-1957 P.J. Vatikiotis Series: Routledge Library Editions: Jordan

Based on expert analysis by leading researchers, this book, first published in 1994, deals with the origins and contemporary status of land and maritime boundaries in the Gulf and Arabian Peninsula. The 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait was the gravest challenge yet posed to the system of small states established by Britain. Immediately, questions were raised: How had this territorial framework evolved? What was its raison d’être? How capable was it of withstanding serious internal and external upheaval? This book reviews these and related concerns from a variety of informed perspectives: those of the boundary-maker, international lawyer, oil economist, and political and historical

Amidst the turmoil in the Middle East, Jordan has presented a striking example of relative stability, and this study, first published in 1967, shows just how far Jordan’s stability depends on its army. Raised in 1921 by the late King Abdullah, the Arab Legion helped him to pacify the tribes and establish and extend his rule and authority over a fractious society in a region of vast desert expanses. The Legion then expanded into a disciplined military institution, but whereas the armies of several Arab states were involved in coups, the Jordan Arab Army has no such record. In this book, the author examines the particular role of the Arab Legion in Jordan's creation and consolidation. Revolution in Iran

The Arab Kingdom and its Fall

The Roots of Turmoil Mehran Kamrava, Georgetown University-Qatar Series: Routledge Library Editions: History of the Middle East Observers of Iran have often ascribed the main cause of the revolution to economic problems under the Shah’s regime. This book, first published in 1990, on the other hand focuses on the political and social factors which contributed of the Pahlavi dynasty. Mehran Kamrava looks at the revolution in detail as a political phenomenon, making use of extensive interviews with former revolutionary leaders, cabinet ministers and diplomats to show the central role of the political collapse of the regime in bringing about the revolution. He concentrates on the internal and the international developments leading to this collapse, and the social environment in which the revolution’s leaders emerged. The Establishment of the United Arab Emirates 1950-85

The Palestinian Refugees in Jordan 1948-1957

Abdullah Omran Taryam Series: Routledge Library Editions: History of the Middle East The United Arab Emirates were established in response to the British decision to withdraw from the Gulf by 1971. This decision, announced in 1968, had left the rulers of the emirates perplexed and alarmed. After decades of mutual suspicion and rivalry, fostered by British imperial dominance, the emirates were now obliged to seek security in federal union. This book, first published in 1987, chronicles this process which led to the establishment of the UAE and explains the circumstances which brought it about.

Avi Plascov Series: Routledge Library Editions: Jordan There is perhaps no aspect of the Arab-Israeli conflict that is more complex and more emotionally charged than the problem of the Palestinian refugees. The atmosphere surrounding the discussion has led to confusion, so that the facts have become unclear and the problems more difficult to treat. This book, first published in 1981, examines the complex interlocking issues that surround the topic of the Palestinian refugees in the country that adopted most of them – Jordan. The Gulf States and Oman

The Third Reich and the Arab East

Christine Osborne Series: Routledge Library Editions: History of the Middle East

Łukasz Hirszowicz Series: Routledge Library Editions: History of the Middle East

The discovery of oil brought enormous change to the Gulf. It transformed the simple fishing and grazing economies of the Gulf states into some of the wealthiest countries in the world. This book, first published in 1977, examines the impact of oil and oil wealth on the Gulf states. It describes the clash between traditional culture and Westernisation and explodes some of the Western myths about social and economic development in the area. It covers both economic change and progress in education, social welfare, urbanisation and industrial diversification. A unique collection of photographs accompanies the authoritative text.

This book, first published in English in 1966, is a comprehensive guide to, and analysis of, the Third Reich’s policy towards the Arab world. Based on German archive material, the records of the Nuremburg trials, published collections of American, British, French, German and Italian documents, and on European and Arabian diaries and memoirs, it provides an essential reading of the history of the region at a key point in time.

Arab Industrialisation and Economic Integration

The Israeli Path to Neoliberalism

Roberto Aliboni, IAI Istituto Affari Internazionali, Mediterranean and Middle East Programme Independently commissioned by IAI, the three studies comprising this book examine inter-Arab industrial and economic cooperation. The first chapter analyses the industrial strategies, economic policies and attempts at harmonisation and cooperation of the Arab countries, providing a detailed picture of the convergences and divergences, the potential and the difficulties faced by the region. The second chapter examines the importance of coordinating economic polices if economic integration is to be sustained, and considers the implications to the world economy. Lastly, the third chapter examines Arab labour flows, a key factor in the development of the Arab countries. The State, Continuity and Change Arie Krampf Series: Routledge Studies in Middle Eastern Economies The economic history of Israel is often portrayed as a story of transformation from interventionism/socialism to liberalization and market economy. This book debunks this narrative. Instead, it argues that the economic history of Israel—its continuity as well as its change—can be explained on the basis of one key causal factor: the state preferences as were shaped by, on the one hand, material and institutional domestic conditions, and, on the other hand, by imported economic ideas originated, mainly, in U.S. policy discourse. The Arab Economy in Israel The Dynamics of a Region's Development Raja Khalidi The Arab enclaves within Israel constitute a definite economic unit. Despite subservice to the national economy they exhibit a range of independent production and consumption modes that suggest potential economic developmental viability. The author considers the background of these enclaves and the extent of the independent Arab sector in the Israeli economy. Applying modern economic analysis, he develops his thesis of the future development of a distinctive Arab path of economic development in Israel. Agriculture, industry, commerce, financing and the position of Arab labour are all examined in depth both as independent entities and in their relationship to the larger Israeli economy. The Economic Case for Palestine Elias H. Tuma and Haim Darin-Drabkin Much has been written about the Arab–Israeli conflict, the prospects for peace and the eventual establishment of a Palestinian state, side by side with the state of Israel. The emphasis, however, has been on the political processes of such eventualities. This book complements these previous efforts, the central concern being with the economic aspects of these various solutions. It is concerned with the economic feasibility of a state of Palestine. What minimum conditions must be met for it to survive and prosper? What size population can it support, what boundaries should it have and what period of time must elapse before the full potential and viability of such a state can be realized? Arab Nationalism

Ismaili History and Intellectual Traditions

The Politics of History and Culture in the Modern Middle East

Farhad Daftary

Peter Wien, University of Maryland, USA This book sheds light on cultural expressions of Arab Nationalism and the contradictory meanings often attached to it. It presents nationalism as an experiencable set of identity markers – in stories, visual culture, narratives of memory and struggles with ideology. Using case studies, the book transcends a conventional history that reduces nationalism in the Arab lands to a pattern of political rise and decline. It suggests Arabs have constructed an identifiable shared national culture, and it critically dissects conceptions about Arab nationalism as an easily graspable secular and authoritarian ideology modelled on Western ideas and visions of modernity.

Contemporary Sephardic and Mizrahi Literature A Diaspora Edited by Dario Miccoli Series: Routledge Jewish Studies Series This book argues that the literary texts produced by Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews who migrated from the Middle East and North Africa in the 1950s onwards, should be considered as part of a transnational arena, in which forms of Jewish diasporism and postcolonial displacement interweave. Through an original perspective that focuses on novelists, poets, professional and amateur writers, the book explains that these Sephardic and Mizrahiauthors are part of a global literary diaspora at the crossroads of past Arab legacies, new national identities and persistent feelings of Jewishness. Contested Holy Places in Israel-Palestine

Governance and Security in Jerusalem

Sharing and Conflict Resolution

The Jerusalem Old City Initiative

Yitzhak Reiter Religious leaders and political actors often use holy places to rally citizens to 'protect' or 'liberate' national territory as 'hallowed land.' The Holy Land, Palestine or Eretz-Israel, is the most obvious case of the process of 'religionizing' ethnic, national and territorial conflicts. This book analyzes fourteen case studies of conflicts over holy sites in the Holy Land, each representing a particular archetype of conflict. It seeks to understand the many facets of disputes and the triggers for the outbreak of violence in and around such sites. It also analyses the effectiveness of the conflict mitigation and resolution tools used for dealing with such disputes. Egyptians in Revolt

Iraq

The Political Economy of Labor and Student Mobilizations 1919–2011

Judith Yaphe Series: The Contemporary Middle East

Adel Abdel Ghafar, Brookings Doha Center, Qatar University Series: Routledge Studies in Middle Eastern Democratization and Government ‘Egyptians in Revolt’ investigates the political economy of the Egyptian labor and student movements. Using elements of social movement theory within a broad political economy framework, it assesses labor and student mobilizations in four eras of contemporary Egyptian history: the pre-1952 Era, the Nasser Era, the Sadat Era, and the Mubarak Era. ‘Egyptians in Revolt’ examines how both movements responded to the political economy pressures of the respective eras. It argues that political opportunities and threats have had a significant impact on both student and labor mobilizations. The book also looks at how the movements have, at times, been able to affect government policies.

Examining how Iraq was created and recreated and the factors shaping its political culture, tribal traditions, and occasional forays into authoritarianism, this book concentrates on one of the most diverse of Middle Eastern states and societies. Focussing on political history, Iraq analyses the long struggle to establish itself as an independent and influential power in an often unstable region, turning to the culture of tribalism that has, and continues to shape the country, and the role that sectarian and ethnic interests have played in the quest for modernization and Iraq’s aversion to change. Islamic Development in Palestine

Minority Rights in Turkey

A Comparative Study

A Battlefield for Europeanization

Stephen Royle Series: Routledge Studies on the Arab-Israeli Conflict

Gözde Yilmaz, University of Atilim Series: Routledge Studies in Middle Eastern Politics

This book assesses the capabilities of an Islamic approach in aiding self-organisation by examining the case of the occupied Palestinian territories in conjunction with a comparative analysis of four other nations. Three main mechanisms of Islamic development are explored; finance, microfinance and charity. Identifying the need to recognise the non-linear nature of societal interaction at the individual, community and state levels, the book uses complexity theory to better understand development. It assesses the role of Islamic development at macro and micro levels and identifies issues with rigid and hierarchical policy making.

This book examines how minority protection, as a highly sensitive and controversial issue, is promoted or constrained in EU’s neighbourhood by focusing on the case of Turkey. It offers a comprehensive and detailed scholarly examination of external Europeanization theories, minority rights in Europe and Turkey, the Europeanization of Turkey, and Turkish politics. Presenting a new and innovative theoretical approach that links European and domestic dynamics, the book demonstrates that policy change in Turkey’s minority rights, as well as domestic change in accession countries in general, depends on an interactive impact of the EU and domestic drivers.

By examining how municipal politics were practiced on a daily basis, it illuminates more fundamental aspects of Turkish politics such as political mobilization, establishing links between voters and politicians, various practices of decision-making and the role of civil society. Palestine in EU and Russian Foreign Policy

Reconstructing the Middle East

Statehood and the Peace Process

Political and Economic Policy

Malath Alagha, University of Exeter, UK Series: Routledge Studies in Middle Eastern Democratization and Government This bookuses the school of constructivism to provide a new understanding of EU and Russian foreign policy, and the countries’ failure to speed up the process of establishing a Palestinian state, despite its designation as a priority in their involvement in the Middle East peace process. Palestinian statehood provides a telling example of how identity and Self-Other perception inform foreign policy-making by global actors. The book explains why the EU and Russia are so eager to be involved in any step towards a peace settlement, as well as showing to what extent the Self-perception of global actorness maintains and boosts EU and Russian influence in the region. Edited by Abdulwahab Alkebsi, CIPE Center for International Private Enterprise, Nathan J Brown and Charlotta Sparre, Swedish Embassy, Egypt Series: UCLA Center for Middle East Development (CMED) series Reconstructing the Middle East examines the changes that happened within the region from 2010 and the long-term challenges and opportunities they present. Featuring the work of authors with a diversity of perspectives, it addresses key issues of gender rights, the role of young people and of the international community. In addition, it deals with the questions of both political and economic reform, and the intertwined nature of the two. Political reform that allows greater participation will fail to quell frustration if Arabs continue to feel that job prospects are bleak. Similarly, Arabs will not accept economic reform that restores growth but continues to fence off the political sphere. Settler-Colonial State Formation in Palestine

The Jewish Origins of Israeli Foreign Policy

A Comparative Study

A Study in Tradition and Survival

Awad Issa Mansour, Al-Quds University, Jerusalem Series: Routledge Studies on the Arab-Israeli Conflict

Shmuel Sandler Series: Israeli History, Politics and Society

This book analyses how settler-colonial state formation is carried out and how it is different from Western European state formation. It shows that using a conceptual tool to analyze the former superimposes certain assumptions over analysis of settler-colonial systems such as the United States, Australia, South Africa and the Zionist case. The book also develops a conceptual framework which could be used to contribute to further understanding of settler-colonial formations. A particular phase is proposed i.e. the production of settler-colonial existence which gives new insight about past and on-going settler colonial cases and the Zionist project in particular.

This book examines whether it is possible to identify a Jewish political tradition in Israel’s interaction with surrounding nations. The theoretical perspective and discourse on this interaction is drawn from international politics and foreign policy, as well as from Jewish political studies.

The Erasure of Arab Political Identity

The Kurds and Iraq

Colonialism and Violence

Gareth Stansfield, University of Exeter, UK

Salam Hawa, McMaster University, Canada Series: Durham Modern Middle East and Islamic World Series

Based on recent and very original research, Gareth Stansfield examines the history, society and political development of Iraqi Kurdistan from the early twentieth century right up to the present. He includes a detailed analysis the Kurds' relationship with Iraq and their role in its future, revealing the crucial role the Iraqi Kurds have come to play in post-Saddam Iraq.

This book explores the long history of the evolution of Arab political identity, which predates the time of the Prophet Muhammad and is characterized by tolerance, compassion, generosity, hospitality, self-control, correct behaviour, equality and consensus. The author argues that present day struggles in many Arab countries to redefine polities and politics are related to the fact that the underlying political culture of the Arabs has been overridden for centuries by successive political regimes which have deviated from the original political culture. The book appeals for a reawakening of, and respect for, the cultural elements underlying the origins of Arab political identity.

The Iraqi Federation explores why and how Iraq became a federal state, and analyses how the process of formation impacts on the operation of the Iraqi federal system. It argues that the different approaches taken by various federal theorists in the past, particularly William H. Riker’s bargain theory, are insufficient to explain the formation of the Iraqi federation completely. The process of the establishment of a federal Iraq must be understood in the context of its unique history and cultural specificity, as well as in the context of the other new federal models that have appeared since the end of the Cold War.

This book examines the ideological evolution of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood (SMB) and how they represent a ‘democratic option of Islamism’, as an alternative to the concept of post-Islamism. It touches upon different themes such as Islamism, post-Islamism, the concept of citizenship in the Islamist mindset, the idea of a civil State, authoritarianism, and ideological revisionism.

The Politics of Culture in Turkey, Greece & Cyprus

The Three Principles of Mulla Sadra

Performing the left Since the Sixties

Divine Gnosis, Self-Realisation and the Dangers of Pseudo-Knowledge in Islam

Edited by Leonidas Karakatsanis, The British Institute at Ankara, Turkey and Nikolaos Papadogiannis, St. Andrews, UK Series: Routledge Advances in Mediterranean Studies This book explores the intersection between the politics and cultures of the Left since the sixties in Turkey, Greece and Cyprus. It exposes the moments in which the Left has been claimed and performed, not only through political manifestos and traditional political boundaries, but also through corporeal acts, discursive practices and affective encounters. By focusing on culture and performance, it highlights the complex link between nationalism and internationalism in left-wing cultures and illuminates the entanglements between the ways in which left-wingers experienced transitions from dictatorship to democracy and vice versa. The Religionization of Israeli Society

The United Arab Emirates

Yoav Peled, Tel-Aviv University, Israel and Horit Herman Peled Series: Routledge Studies in Middle Eastern Politics

Power, Politics and Policy-Making

The process of consolidation of the new civil religion is known in Israel as hadata (religionization). Hadata has manifested itself in various ways in many areas of social life and is clearly present in the growing prevalence of the national-religious Jewish worldview in Jewish Israeli culture. The Religionization of Israeli Society examines the precise nature, pace and significance of hadata and explains the reasons for its occurrence. In very broad outlines, the new civil religion’s origin can be traced to a movement from socialist to religious Zionism, with a value system derived from traditional Judaism, adjusted to the requirements of modern society and democratic polity. Kristian Coates Ulrichsen, Rice Univerity, USA Series: The Contemporary Middle East This book charts the various processes of state formation and political and economic development that have enabled the UAE to emerge as a great regional power and major player in the post Arab Spring reordering of Middle East and North African Politics, as well as the closest partner of the US in military and security affairs in the region. It also explores the seamier underside of that growth in terms of the condition of migrant workers, organized criminal networks, and, latterly, one of the highest rates of political prisoners per capita in the world. It concludes with a discussion of the likely policy challenges that the UAE will face in coming years. A Genealogy of Islamic Feminism

Routledge Handbook on Christian-Muslim Relations

Patterns and Change in Indonesia

Edited by David Thomas, University of Birmingham, UK

Etin Anwar Series: Islamic Studies Series

The study of Christian-Muslim relations has slowly been emerging as a specific field of academic enquiry for some decades. This handbook provides comprehensive coverage of the development of Christian-Muslim relations from the emergence of Islam, through the Middle Ages, Early Modern and Modern periods through to the present day. It also examines theological and sociological issues through time and across the globe.

Islam and feminism and the impact it has on Muslim women’s self-narratives of equality from its early encounter during colonialism to its emergence in the 1990s in Indonesia. The book explores the debates over the changing relationship between Islam and feminism within the contexts of the historical encounters between global and local forces. Global forces include Dutch colonialism, Islamic reformism in Egypt, Western feminism, developmentalism, and United Nations bodies, whereas local forces refer to women’s movements, governmental politics, customary practices and variations of Islamic revivalism. New Horizons in Qur'anic Linguistics

Routledge Handbook on Early Islam

A Syntactic, Semantic and Stylistic Analysis

Edited by Herbert Berg

Hussein Abdul-Raof, Formerly Leeds University Series: Culture and Civilization in the Middle East This book provides a panoramic insight into the Qur'anic landscape fenced by innate syntactic, semantic and stylistic landmarks where context and meaning have closed ranks to impact morphological form in order to achieve variegated illocutionary forces. It provides a comprehensive account of the recurrent syntactic, stylistic, morphological, lexical, cultural, and phonological voids that are an iceberg looming in the horizon of Qur'anic genre. It is an invaluable resource for contrastive linguistics, translation studies, and corpus linguistics.

The history of early Islam or origins of Islam remains highly contested. From the beginning of modern scholarship on this formative period, scholars have questioned traditional Muslim accounts. Scholarly fixation on early Islam is mirrored by sectarian rivalries between Sunnis and Shi’is, both of whom trace their origins to this period and continue to engage in apologetics and polemics based on this period. Moreover, contemporary movements from Salafists to modernists (and even the New Atheists) point to Islam’s origins to justify their positions. In other words, almost every major debate in the study of Islam and among Muslims about Islam’s beliefs, practices, institutions, etc. look to the formative period of Islam.

This book critically explores the modernist-apologetic Islamic approach to the relation between revelation and science and politics which, for over a century, has been a central part of Arab discourses on the future of Muslim societies. The main thesis of the book is that the modernist-apologetic approach has great potential to be a force for liberalization, but also possesses inherent limitations that render its theory on the relation between revelation and freedom self-contradictory.

Women and Leadership in Islamic Law A Critical Analysis of Classical Legal Texts David Solomon Jalajel Series: Culture and Civilization in the Middle East Islamic law has traditionally prohibited women from being prayer leaders and heads of state. This book examines the assumption within much existing scholarship that the patriarchal nature of pre-Islamic and early Muslim Near Eastern Society is the main reason for this. It claims that the evolution of Islamic law was a complex process, shaped by numerous cultural, historical and political factors, as well as scriptural sources whose importance cannot be dismissed. The book examines a broad survey of legal works from the four canonical Sunni schools of law to determine what factors influenced the development of the legal rulings prohibiting women from assuming leadership roles.
