A New History of African Christian Thought
Religion, Culture and Spirituality in Africa and the African Diaspora
From Cape to Cairo Edited by David Tonghou Ngong David Tonghou Ngong offers a comprehensive view of African Christian thought that includes North Africa in antiquity as well as Sub-Saharan Africa from the period of colonial missionary activity to the present. Challenging conventional, colonial divisions of Africa, A New History of African Christian Thought demonstrates that important continuities exist across the continent. Chapters written by specialists in African Christian thought reflect the issues—both ancient and modern—in which Christian Africa has impacted the shape of Christian belief from the beginning of the movement up to the present day. Edited by William Ackah, Birkbeck, University of London, UK, Jualynne E. Dodson, Michigan State University, USA and R. Drew Smith, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, USA Series: Routledge Studies in Religion This book explores the ways in which religious ideas and beliefs continue to play a crucial role in the lives of people of African descent. It uses historical and contemporary examples to show how people of African descent develop and engage with spiritual rituals, organizations and practices to make sense of their lives and creatively express their spiritual imaginings. The essays in this volume reveal how spirituality weaves and intersects with issues of gender, class, sexuality and race across Africa and the diaspora. It will appeal to researchers and postgraduate students interested in the study of African religions, race and religion, sociology of religion and anthropology. Miracles in Greco-Roman Antiquity
Catholic Critics of the King James Bible
A Sourcebook for the Study of New Testament Miracle Stories
The Unauthorised History, 1611-1911
Wendy Cotter
Ellie Gebarowski-Shafer Series: Routledge New Critical Thinking in Religion, Theology and Biblical Studies
The previous edition presented the most well-known miracles attributed to Greco-Roman gods and heroes - healings, raisings from the dead, exorcisms and nature miracles. This new edition offers further sources to understand the context of New Testament miracle stories, with new sections on miraculous conception and birth, apotheosis, the divine transformation of the hero, appearances after death and sublime ascent to heaven. Christian narrators were not only aware of these narratives, they also knew that Jesus, his person and his massage would be interpreted against this backdrop. This is a valuable resource for students of Christianity and the late antique world alike. This book challenges the prevailing view that until fairly recently the King James Bible (KJB) dominated the field of English biblical translation virtually unopposed. Rather than focusing on its gradual acceptance and triumph as traditional Protestant narratives and even most recent scholarly monographs have done, this study takes into account the persistent currents of opposition-especially by Roman Catholic critics-during the version's first 300 years in print. While Anglo-American Protestants indeed came to cherish the KJB, narratives of its success which now dominate the fields of religious and literary history have ignored the persistent voices of dissent that were raised against the version in England, Ireland, and North America. Drawing on new archival research, this book tells the forgotten story of those who denounced the KJB as a "heretical" translation and the role they ironically played in immortalizing it. The Afterlife in Early Christian Carthage
Chromatius of Aquileia and the Making of a Christian City
Near-Death Experiences, Ancestor Cult, and the Archaeology of Paradise Stephen E. Potthoff Series: Routledge Studies in the Early Christian World
Robert McEachnie, UNC Charlotte, USA Series: Routledge Studies in the Early Christian World
The Afterlife in Early Christian Carthage explores how the visionary experiences of early Christian martyrs shaped and informed early Christian ancestor cult and the construction of the cemetery as paradise. Taking the early Christian cemeteries in Carthage as a case study, the volume broadens our understanding of the historical and cultural origins of the early Christian cult of the saints, and highlights the often divergent views about the dead and post-mortem realms expressed by the church fathers, and in graveside ritual and the material culture of the cemetery. This fascinating study is a key resource for students of late antique and early Christian culture.
This book examines the transformation of elite Roman practices in relation to the urban environment, and in particular the shift in patronage by donors from the city as a whole to the Christian church, which occurred at the beginning of the 5th century in the Western Roman Empire. It does this through the lens of a single Italian city, Aquileia, and its bishop, Chromatius. The works of Chromatius, including sermons and correspondence, the archeological remains of the city, and the artwork and epigraphic evidence in the churches built during the period provide valuable insights into a reshaping of the urban environment and its institutions which occurred at the beginning of the 5th century.

Jennifer Constantine Jackson Ground-breaking in its interdisciplinary approach, Conversation, Friendship and Transformation invites readers to an exploration of theological reflection on conversation and friendship as transformative ways of knowing self, others and God. Augustine’s De doctrina christiana and Confessions manifest a foundational example of reflection on the nature of language and love in the context of basic questions of Christianity and culture. Two texts from the medieval tradition are brought forth to confirm and develop Augustine’s contributions: the Letters of Heloise and Abelard and Thomas Aquinas’ discussion of oratio in the Summa Theologiae. Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Hagiographical Strategies A Comparative Study of the Standard Lives of St. Francis and Milarepa Massimo A. Rondolino Series: Sanctity in Global Perspective This book examines the potential of conducting studies in comparative hagiology, through parallel literary and historical analyses of spiritual life writings pertaining to distinct religious contexts. In particular, it focuses on a comparative analysis of the early sources on the medieval Christian Saint Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) and the Tibetan Buddhist Milarepa (c. 1052-1135), up to and including the so-called ‘standard versions’ of their life stories written by Bonaventure of Bagnoregio (1221-1274) and Tsangnyön Heruka (1452-1507) respectively. The Fight for the Roman West 395-423 AD Chris Doyle Series: Roman Imperial Biographies Under Honorius, much of the Roman West was permanently ceded to barbarian control and Rome itself was sacked by the Visigoths, earning him one of the worst reputations of all the Roman emperors. In this volume, the first in English dedicated to Honorius himself, careful analysis of primary literary, legal, and material evidence challenges the preconception of Honorius as ineffectual. It examines the personal life of Honorius and his relationships with those closest to him, and furthermore, it evaluates Honorius' reaction and responses to the numerous political, military, religious and domestic difficulties that he faced during this transformative period in the history of the Roman Empire. Food and Religious Identities in Spain, 1400-1600
Jewish Glass and Christian Paint
Jillian Williams Series: Religious Cultures in the Early Modern World
A Materialist Mapping of the 'Parting of the Ways'
This book examines a period of dynamic change in Iberian history through the lens of food and its relationship to religious identity. It considers the role of food in the formation and redefinition of religious identities throughout this period and its significance in the maintenance of ideological and physical boundaries between faiths. This is an insightful and unique look into interreligious dynamics. It will therefore, be of great interest to scholars of Religious Studies, Early Modern European History and Food Studies. Eric C. Smith Series: Routledge Studies in the Early Christian World This book is about the ways identities inhere in material, and the ways material conforms—or more often declines to conform—to the expectations set by texts. It presents a series of objects, images, and artifacts and, through their examination, demonstrates the ways hybrid identities persisted in material, even as in the realm of texts and theological discourses a kind of ideological purity was imposed by those wishing to "partition" Judaism and early Christianity. The volume offers an insight, through this lens of material culture, into the blurry and contested identities of Jews and Christians (and Jewish Christians and Christian Jews) in the period of late antiquity. Personhood in the Byzantine Christian Tradition
Rome and Judaea
Early, Medieval, and Modern Perspectives
International Law Relations, 162-100 BCE
Alexis Torrance and Symeon Paschalidis
Linda Zollschan, Independent Researcher Series: Routledge Studies in Ancient History
Bringing together international scholars from across a range of linked disciplines (theology, history, Byzantine studies and philosophy) to examine the concept of the person in the Greek Christian East, Personhood in the Byzantine Christian Tradition stretches in its scope from the New Testament to contemporary debates surrounding personhood in Eastern Orthodoxy. Contributions explore various dimensions of the issue in specific historical contexts that have not hitherto received the scholarly attention they deserve. The volume thus brings forward an important debate over the roots of contemporary notions of personhood and will provide a key stimulus to further work in this area. Rome and Judaea explores the nature of Judaea’s first diplomatic mission to Rome during the Maccabean revolt: did it result in a sanctioned treaty or was it founded instead on amity? This book breaks new ground in this debate by bringing to light the "Roman-Jewish Friendship tablet," a newly discovered piece of evidence that challenges the theory Rome ratified an official treaty with Judaea. Incorporating interdisciplinary research and this new textual evidence, the book argues that Roman-Jewish relations during the Maccabean revolt were motivated by the Roman concept of diplomatic friendship. Producing Christian Culture from Augustine to 1500s
The Cult of St. Anne in Medieval and Early Modern Europe Jennifer Welsh, Division of Humanities Lindenwood University – Belleville Series: Sanctity in Global Perspective
Medieval Exegesis and its Interpretative Genres Giles E. M. Gasper and Francis Watson This book takes as its thread the 'interpretative genres' within which medieval people engaged with the Bible. Contributors present specific material as a case study illustrative of a specific genre, whether devotional, homiletical, scholarly, or controversial. The chronological range moves from St Augustine to the use of Gospel texts in polemical writing of the early 1500s, with focal sections on early medieval Anglo-Saxon and Carolingian theology, the scholastic turn of the High Middle Ages, and the influence of vernacular writing in the later Middle Ages. The tremendous range and vitality of medieval responses to biblical texts are highlighted within the studies. Drawing upon a broad range of both textual and visual sources, Dr Welsh advances novel arguments about St. Anne’s cult from its medieval roots right through to the nineteenth century. Challenging received notions of her cult as the last gasp of medieval piety or a precursor of later trends, this study provides a new and multi-textured understanding of St. Anne in Northern Europe, which can in turn be used to explore shifting relationships between domesticity and sanctity, concepts of properly pious lay behaviour for both men and women, and attitudes toward women across several centuries. Reconceiving Religious Conflict
The History of Evil in Antiquity
New Views from the Formative Centuries of Christianity
2000 BCE to 450 CE
Edited by Wendy Mayer and Chris De Wet, University of South Africa Series: Routledge Studies in the Early Christian World
Tom Angier, University of Kent, UK, Chad Meister, Bethel College, USA and Charles Taliaferro, St. Olaf College, USA
This book deconstructs instances of religious conflict within the formative centuries of Christianity, the first six centuries CE. It explores the theoretical foundations of religious conflict; the dynamics of religious conflict within the context of persecution and martyrdom; the social and moral intersections that undergird the phenomenon of religious conflict; and the relationship between religious conflict and religious identity. It is unique in that it does not solely focus on religious violence, as it is physically manifested, but on religious conflict (and tolerance), looking too at dynamics of religious discourse and practice that often precede and accompany overt religious violence.
This first volume of The History of Evil covers Graeco-Roman, Indian, Near Eastern and Eastern philosophy and religion from 2000 BCE to 450 CE. The volume charts the foundations of the history of evil among the major philosophical traditions and world religions, beginning with the oldest recorded traditions: the Vedas and Upanishads, Confucianism and Daoism, and Buddhism. This cutting-edge treatment of the history of evil at its crucial and determinative inception will appeal to those with particular interests in the ancient period as well as those seeking an understanding of how later philosophical and religious developments were conditioned and shaped.

Maged S. A. The Syriac World Edited by Daniel King Series: Routledge Worlds This volume surveys the "Syriac world", the culture that grew up among the Syriac-speaking communities from the 2nd century CE and which continues to exist and flourish today, both in its original homeland of Syria and Mesopotamia, and also in the worldwide diaspora of Syriac-speaking communities. It examines the religion, the material, visual and literary cultures, history and social structures of this diverse community, as well as Syriac interactions with their neighbours ancient and modern. It offers the first comprehensive survey of Syriac culture as a whole, and fills a significant gap in modern scholarship. The Unbound God Slavery and the Formation of Early Christian Thought Chris L. de Wet, University of South Africa Series: Routledge Studies in the Early Christian World This volume examines the prevalence, function, and socio-political effects of slavery discourse in the major theological formulations of the late third to early fifth centuries AD, arguably the most formative period of early Christian doctrine. The question the book poses is this: in what way did the Christian theologians of the third, fourth, and early fifth centuries appropriate the discourse of slavery in their theological formulations, and what could the effect of this appropriation have been for actual physical slaves? This fascinating study is crucial reading for anyone with an interest in early Christianity or Late Antiquity, and slavery more generally. Taoism A New Perspective Evgeny A Torchinov and Russell Kirkland The book surveys the history and teachings of Taoism (Daoism) over the course of Chinese civilization, and explores themes and ideas that interest modern minds. At the century's end, our understanding of Taoism was limited to what scholars of Asia and Western lands had revealed. Few knew of the probing researches also being conducted by scholars of Russia, particularly Evgeny Torchinov (1956-2003). Torchinov died suddenly before completing the final English edition of his comprehensive introduction, Daosizm: Opyt Istoriko-religioznogo Opisaniia. Here at last is that edition. We see Taoism through fresh eyes, revealing new insights into the minds and lives of centuries of Chinese Taoists. Buddhism
Routledge Revivals: Buddhist Stories (1913)
A Contemporary Philosophical Investigation
Paul Dahlke
David Burton, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK Series: Investigating Philosophy of Religion
First published in 1913, this book presents a translation of five stories written by the early German Buddhist Paul Dahlke. Each of the five stories illustrates and elucidates central concepts in Buddhist philosophy while eschewing any technical terminology. As such, this book ideal for those seeking an accessible introduction to Buddhist philosophy and will provide a platform for further study.
Buddhism, in its diverse forms and throughout its long history, has had a profound influence on Asian cultures and the lives of countless individuals. In recent times, it has also attracted great interest among people in other parts of the world, including philosophers. Buddhism: A Contemporary Philosophical Investigation examines some of the central questions that such ideas raise, drawing on ancient and more recent sources from a variety of Buddhist traditions, as viewed from a contemporary philosophical standpoint. Foucault, Buddhism and Disciplinary Rules Malcolm Voyce This book suggests that previous critiques of the rules of Buddhist monks (Vinaya) may now be reconsidered to deal with some of the assumptions concerning the legal nature of these rules and to provide a focus on how Vinaya texts may have actually operated in practice. Malcolm Voyce utilizes the work of Foucault and his notions of 'power' and 'subjectivity' in several ways. By doing so, he demonstrates that the Vinaya was not an independent legal system, but that it was dependent on the Dharmas stra for some of its jurisprudential needs, that it was not in the strict sense a form of customary law, but a wider system of jurisprudence linked to Dharmas stra principles and precepts. A Moral Ontology for a Theistic Ethic
Christian And Islamic Theology Of Religions
Gathering the Nations in Love and Justice
A Critical Appraisal
Frank G. Kirkpatrick Series: Routledge Revivals
Esra Akay Dag Series: Routledge Studies in Religion
This title was first published in 2003. This book develops a moral ontology for a theistic ethic that engages the work of contemporary moral and political philosophers, and reaffirms the relevance of a theistic tradition of God's relation to the world reflected in the fundamental teachings of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Drawing on recent thought in the non-religious fields of psychology and political and moral philosophy, which build around the concept of human flourishing in community, Kirkpatrick argues that a theistic ethic need not be the captive of parochial or sectarian theological camps. He proposes a common or universal ethic that transcends the fashionable ethnocentric 'incommensurate differences' in morality alleged by many post-modern deconstructionists. In the wake of ethnic religious strife post September 11th 2001, this book argues for a common morality built on the inclusivity of love, community, and justice that can transcend sectarian and parochial boundaries.
This book provides a comparison of the development of theology of religions in Western Christianity and its application in an Islamic context. It also shows the parallels between some specific forms of theology of religions, i.e. exclusivism, inclusivism or pluralism, in both Islamic and Christian traditions. This provides a rounded picture of Christian-Muslim understanding of religious others and prepares the ground for a stronger and more sophisticated Islamic theology of religions. It is, therfore, vital reading for those studying theology of religions, comparative theology and interfaith relations.

After Charity
Christian Theology and the Secular University
Theological Reflections on International Development
Paul A. Macdonald
Stephen J. Plant
Drawing on prominent figures in the Christian intellectual tradition like Newman, Augustine, and Aquinas, and working from a Christian philosophical and theological perspective this book argues that Christian theology belongs in the secular university because it provides distinct resources that the secular university needs if it is going to fulfil what should be its main epistemic and even broader educative ends. The book offers a fresh and unique perspective to scholars working in the disciplines of theology, religious studies, and philosophy, and to anyone interested in thinking critically and creatively about the place and nature of theological study within the secular university.
International development has risen dramatically up both the political agenda in recent years. As the utopian myth of a global free market underpinned by the relentless spread of liberal democracy perishes in Iraq or is submerged under the floods brought on by climate change, politicians and churches pin more and more of their hopes for the world on international development. Proceeding from the premise that the 'work of political theology is to shed light from the Christian faith upon the intricate challenge of thinking about living in late-modern Western society' (O'Donovan) this book aims to understand the aspirations, purposes and practices of international development from the perspective and commitments of Christian faith. It aims to educate Christians and citizens in the practical reasonableness required for international development, based upon a recovery of traditional practices of charity. British Methodist Hymnody
Christian Thought
Theology, Heritage and Experience
A Historical Introduction
Martin V. Clarke Series: Routledge Methodist Studies Series Hymnody is widely recognised as a central tenet of Methodism’s theological, doctrinal, spiritual and liturgical identity. Theologically and doctrinally, the content of the hymns have traditionally been a primary vehicle for expressing Methodism’s emphasis on salvation for all, social holiness and personal commitment, while particular hymns and the communal act of participating in hymn singing has been a key element in the spiritual lives of Methodists. An important contribution to the history of Methodism, British Methodist Hymnody argues that the significance of hymn-making in British Methodism is best understood as a combination of its official status, spiritual expression, popular appeal and practical application. Seeking to consider what, when, how and why Methodists sing, British Methodist Hymnody examines the history, perception and practice of hymnody from Methodism’s small-scale eighteenth-century origins to its place as a worldwide denomination today. Chad Meister, Bethel College, USA and James Stump The story of Christian thought is essential to understanding Christian faith today and the last two millennia of world history. This fresh and lively introduction explores the central ideas, persons, events, and movements that gave rise to Christian thought, from early beginnings to its present forms. By highlighting the important but often neglected role of women and the influence of non-Christian ideas and movements, this book provides a broader context for understanding the history of Christian ideas and their role in shaping our world. This second edition features a new chapter on liberal theology and reflects recent scholarship in the field. Christos Yannaras
Fall Narratives
Philosophy, Theology, Culture
An Interdisciplinary Perspective
Andreas Andreopoulos
Edited by Zohar Hadromi-Allouche and Áine Larkin
Christos Yannaras is one of the most significant Orthodox theologians of recent times. His work engages not only with issues of philosophy and theology, but also takes in wider questions of culture and politics. With contributions from established and new scholars this collection considers the four main strands of Yannaras’ work - philosophy, theology, ethics and culture - and reflects on the ways in which Yannaras has engaged and influenced thought across these fields. Christos Yannaras provides a foreword.
Fall Narratives brings together theologians, historians and artists as well as new and established scholars of religion and literature to explore and reflect on a wide range of concepts of the Fall. Bringing a fresh understanding of the nuanced meanings of the Fall and its various manifestations over time and across space, contributions reflect on the ways in which the Fall can be seen as a transition into absence, how conceptions of the Fall relate to, change, and shape one another, and how the Fall can be seen positively, embracing as it does a narrative of hope.

Death, Life and Laughter
From Presumption to Prudence in Just War Reasoning
Essays on religion in honour of Douglas Davies Edited by Mathew Guest and Martha Middlemiss Lé Mon Birth, death and the rituals that take us from one to the other tell us a lot about humanity and our quest to understand ourselves. Cross-disciplinary analyses of the life-course have generated the most profound insights into religion and spirituality. Douglas Davies' work is a rare example of this kind of scholarship, challenging the boundaries that separate theology from the social sciences and that divide academia from public life. Featuring essays by renowned international scholars, this book is a tribute to his work and a critical commentary on the questions that arise from it. Kevin Carnahan, Central Methodist University, USA Series: Routledge Studies in Religion For the last several decades, the Just War debate amongst theologians has been dominated by two accounts of moral rationality. One side assumes a presumption against harm (PAH), and the other identifies with a presumption against injustice (PAI). From Presumption to Prudence in Just War Reasoning argues that the time has come to leave behind these two viewpoints in favor of a prudentially grounded approach to Just War thinking. This book offers a compelling new perspective on this important and pertinent subject. As such, academics and students in Religion, Theology, Philosophy, Ethics and Political Theory will all find it an invaluable resource on Just War theory. Theologian of the Interruptive Word
A Way Beyond Replacement Theology
R. David Nelson
Steven D. Aguzzi Series: Routledge New Critical Thinking in Religion, Theology and Biblical Studies
While Tübingen theologian Eberhard Jüngel’s theology remains broadly influential in Continental Europe, his work has largely been overlooked by Anglo-American readers interested in modern Protestantism. There are, however, signs that this trend is changing, as several dissertations, specialist monographs, and popular blog-sites have appeared recently that are devoted to Jüngel’s thought. There is thus a growing audience for the proposed study, which will be the first up-to-date, English-language, general introduction to Jüngel’s theology to appear in three decades. Israel, the Church, and Millenarianism breaks new ground by applying an ancient principle to the problem of Israel’s ’replacement’: the early Church’s promotion of millennialism. Utilizing the best in Patristic research, Aguzzi argues that these earliest Christian traditions made room for the future of Israel because Christ’s reign in the Church was viewed as provisional to his historical reign on earth-Israel’s role in salvation history is not yet complete. Aguzzi’s research also opens the door for a greater Catholic understanding of the millennial principle, concluding that the Synagogue and the Church are indeed on a parallel trajectory. John Calvin
Kierkegaard, Language and the Reality of God
Intellectual History and Theology
Steven Shakespeare Series: Routledge Revivals
Stephen R. Holmes Series: Great Theologians Series John Calvin is one of the most significant thinkers in Christian history. His name is still, 450 years after his death, attached to churches worldwide. Yet there have been remarkably few authoritative and accessible accounts of his thought. This book fills an important gap in present literature, presenting the first scholarly study of Calvin's theology for nearly thirty years. Bringing together the fruits of recent scholarship which has explored Calvin's intellectual context, this book offers a new reading of how Calvin set about the theological task and what he had to say. Attention is paid to Calvin's location in intellectual history, and to his reading; to his use of the Bible; to his theological method; and to his influence on the later tradition. At the heart of the work is a new summary of Calvin's theology, drawing out major themes and showing their inter-relations. Routledge October 2017: 234x156: 208pp Hb: 978-0-754-60395-5: £105.00 Pb: 978-0-754-60396-2: £30.00 * For full contents and more information, visit: www.routledge.com/9780754603962
This title was first published in 2001: Debate about the reality of God risks becoming an arid stalemate. An unbridgeable gulf seems to be fixed between realists, arguing that God exists independently of our language and beliefs, and anti-realists for whom God-language functions to express human spiritual ideals, with no reference to a reality external to the faith of the believer. Soren Kierkegaard has been enlisted as an ally by both sides of this debate. Kierkegaard, Language and the Reality of God presents a new approach, exploring the dynamic nature of Kierkegaard's texts and the way they undermine neat divisions between realism and anti-realism, objectivity and subjectivity. Karl Barth and the Prophetic Office of Jesus Christ
Materiality and the Study of Religion
The Lord as Vivit!, Regnat!, Triumphat!
The Stuff of the Sacred
Greg Robertson Series: Barth Studies This books both redresses a lacuna in Barth scholarship and offers an analysis of a christological theme with growing ecumenical consensus. Through attention to Barth's construction of Jesus' prophetic office, Robertson identifies a key component of the later Barth's theology as well as responding to several recent critiques of Barth's pneumatology and ecclesiology. The value of this work, however, extends beyond Barth research as one of the lone explications of the prophetic office in a twentieth-century theologian at a time when inclusion of Christ's munus propheticum in Christology is becoming more common. Edited by Tim Hutchings and Joanne McKenzie Series: Theology and Religion in Interdisciplinary Perspective Series in Association with the BSA Sociology of Religion Study Group Material culture has emerged over the last decade as a significant theoretical concern for the study of religion. The contributors address three key themes: how objects become or cease to be religious how objects are used in contests over access to public space and resources, and how religion is embodied and performed by individuals in their everyday lives. Chapters discuss the significance of the materiality of religion across different religious traditions and diverse geographical regions; close attention is paid to gender, age, ethnicity and class, and to the timely and politically significant research fields of non-religion, religious integration and political activism. Karl Barth’s Modernity Re-centering the Subject Mark Ralls Series: Barth Studies North American and British circles often assume that Barth was the great opponent of modern theology. German interpreters, however, have viewed Barth's appropriation of modern philosophy in much more positive terms. This book seeks to respond to the gulf separating Anglo-American interpreters from their continental counterparts. Mark Ralls considers Barth's relationship to modernity from the provocative, yet largely unexamined, question of the human self. Ralls argues that Barth preserves the modernist claim that the self has a self-identity established by free self-determination, while establishing the self anew as the covenant partner of God. This paradoxical understanding of the self may avoid both the false optimism of modern subjectivity and the daunting cynicism of postmodern deconstruction. Monasticism in Modern Times
Mystical Theology and Continental Philosophy
Edited by Isabelle Jonveaux and Stefania Palmisano
Interchange in the Wake of God
This book presents a broad sociological perspective on the contemporary issues facing Christian monasticism. Since the founding work of Max Weber, the sociology of monasticism has received little attention. However, the field is now being revitalized by some new research. Focusing on Christian monks and nuns, the contributors explore continuity and discontinuity with the past in what superficially might appear a monolithic tradition. Contributors speak not only about monasticism in Europe and the United States but also in Africa and Latin America, a different landscape where the question of recruitment does not figure among issues considered as problematic.

Edited by John Arblaster and Rob Faesen Series: Contemporary Theological Explorations in Christian Mysticism This book explores the most important mystical authors and texts from the Low Countries including: William of Saint-Thierry, Hadewijch, Pseudo-Hadewijch, John of Ruusbroec, Jan van Leeuwen, Hendrik Herp, and the Arnhem Mystical Sermons. The most important aspects of mystical anthropology are discussed: the spiritual nature of the soul, the inner-most being of the soul, the faculties, the senses, and crucial metaphors which were used to explain the relationship of God and the human person. Two contributions explicitly connect the anthropology of the mystics to contemporary thought. Linda Joelsson Series: Routledge Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Biblical Criticism Paul and Death uses the method of psychological exegesis to show that the differing attitudes toward death in Paul’s letters make for a much more coherent discourse if they are seen as an aid to individual and collective psychological coping. Taking the differences between each of Paul’s letters as its starting point, this study suggests that a variety of coping strategies in relation to death may be beneficial depending on the situation, the person, and the stage of the coping process. Combining theology and biblical studies with modern psychology, this book will be of particular interest to academics and students that are studying the relationship between Religion and notions of Death. Mystical Experience of God A Philosophical Inquiry
Popular Evangelicalism in the Age of Mass Democracy
Jerome Gellman Series: Routledge Revivals
Martin Spence Series: Routledge Studies in Evangelicalism
This title was first published in 2001: Engaging contemporary discussion concerning the validity of mystical experiences of God, Jerome Gellman presents the best evidential case in favor of validity and its implications for belief in God. Gellman vigorously defends the coherence of the concept of a mystical experience of God against philosophical objections, and evaluates attempts to provide alternative explanations from sociology and neuropsychology. He then carefully examines feminist objections to male philosophers' treatments of mystical experience of God and to the traditional hierarchal concept of God.
This book is the first major study of the constellation of evangelists, mission halls, tent revivals, children’s clubs, Bible institutes, musicians, advertising strategies, publishing enterprises, and philanthropic activity that constituted a vibrant substratum of British Evangelical Christianity between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. This populist Protestant subculture has been well-charted in North America but virtually ignored in Britain. This lacuna is part due to a common assumption that secularization corroded traditional religious communities during this era. By contrast, this book argues that this panoply of pan-denominational affinities and endeavours in fact represented an adaptation of the British Evangelical Protestant tradition to the age of mass democracy.

Andrew Atherstone and David Ceri Jones Series: Routledge Studies in Evangelicalism Evangelicalism, an inter-denominational religious movement that has grown to become one of the most pervasive expressions of world Christianity in the early twenty-first century, had its origins in the religious revivals led by George Whitefield, John Wesley and Jonathan Edwards in the middle decades of the eighteenth century. With its stress on the Bible, the cross of Christ, conversion and the urgency of mission, it quickly spread throughout the Atlantic world and then became a global phenomenon. Over the past three decades evangelicalism has become the focus of considerable historical research. This research companion brings together a team of leading scholars writing broad-ranging and research-led chapters on the key themes in the history of evangelicalism. Suffering in Worship
The Church, Authority, and Foucault
Anglican Liturgy in Relation to Stories of Suffering People
Imagining the Church as an Open Space of Freedom
Armand Léon van Ommen Series: Liturgy, Worship and Society Series Questioning how Anglican liturgy welcomes people who are suffering, this book uniquely applies a narrative-ritual model for the analysis of both the liturgical text and worship services themselves. The author draws on interviews with participants in worship and clergy. Highlighting several elements in the liturgy which address suffering, including the Eucharist, songs, sermons, and prayers of intercession, this book shows the significance of a warm and safe liturgical community as necessary context for suffering people to find consolation. Based on the concept of remembrance this book pleads for liturgy that attends to the suffering of both God and people. Steven G. Ogden Series: Routledge New Critical Thinking in Religion, Theology and Biblical Studies The Church, Authority and Foucault provides a fresh ecclesiological critique that confirms the Church’s vocation to welcome the stranger, honour new wisdom and work for change. The book breaks new ground by using Michel Foucault’s concept of space as a basis for interpreting church as a space of freedom. This leads to a re-evaluation of authority using Foucault’s concept of power-relations. Steven Ogden concludes that the Church is called to enable human transformation in ways that challenge and renew structures of authority, within and beyond the Church. The Ethical Philosophy of Anselm of Canterbury
Theology at War and Peace
From the Temporal to the Eternal
English theology and Germany in the First World War
Thomas Ball Series: Routledge New Critical Thinking in Religion, Theology and Biblical Studies In his chapter entitled ’Anselm on Ethics’ in the Cambridge Companion to Anselm, Jeffrey Brower comments that, ’Anselm’s ethical views have received very little attention from contemporary scholars, and as a result there is no satisfactory systematic treatment of them available in the contemporary literature.’ This book seeks to fill that lacuna. More specifically the purpose of this volume is to examine the extent to which Anselm of Canterbury possessed a consistent normative philosophy which coherently addressed the question of how the individual ought to act. By so doing it extends the contemporary commentary of Anselm’s ethical philosophy beyond the abstract and meta-ethical and analyses the ways in which Anselm’s letter collection can be used to show pragmatic approaches to ethical questions. In examining this field, this book contains two interdependent parts, one illustrative of the other. The first deals with Anselm’s anthropology, theory of will, and ethical philosophy.
Mark D. Chapman This book is the first detailed discussion of the impact of the First World War on English theology. Assessing the close relationships between English and German theologians before the First World War, Chapman then explores developments throughout the war. A series of case studies make use of a large amount of unpublished material, showing how some theologians sought to maintain relationships with their German colleagues, while others, especially from a more Anglo-Catholic perspective, used the war as an opportunity to distance themselves from the liberal theology which was beginning to dominate the universities before the war.

The Practice of the Presence of God
Vatican II and New Thinking about Catholic Education
Theology as a Way of Life Edited by Martin Laird and Sheelah Treflé Hidden Exploring the unity of the practice of prayer and the practice of theology, this book draws together insights from world-class theologians including Rowan Williams, Andrew Louth, Frances Young, Margaret R. Miles, Sebastian Brock, and Nikolai Sakharov. Authors demonstrate that the discipline of theology cannot properly be practiced apart from the prayer life of the theologian. The prayer of the theologian shapes her or his approach to theology. Whether it be preaching, teaching, writing or research, the deep soundings of prayer inform and embrace all.

The Soul of Theological Anthropology A Cartesian Exploration Joshua R. Farris Series: Routledge New Critical Thinking in Religion, Theology and Biblical Studies Recent research in the philosophy of religion, anthropology, and philosophy of mind has prompted the need for a more integrated, comprehensive and systematic theological manner concerning human nature. This book constructively develops a theological accounting of human persons by drawing from a Cartesian-inspired model (following Taliaferro and Swinburne). Exploring a substance dualism model, the author highlights relevant theological texts and passages of Scripture, arguing that this model accounts for doctrinal essentials concerning theological anthropology. Routledge Revivals: The Song Celestial or Bhagavad-Gita (1906) From the Mahabharata Edwin Arnold First published in 1909, this book presents an English translation of chapters 25-42 of the Bhishma Parva from the epic Sanskrit poem Mahabharata — better known as the Bhagavad-Gita, reckoned as one of the "Five Jewels" of Devanagari literature. The plot consists of a dialogue between Prince Arjuna and Krishna, the Supreme Deity, in a war-chariot prior to a great battle. The conversation that takes place unfolds a philosophical system which remains the prevailing Brahmanic belief. Building on a number of preceding translations, this highly-regarded poetic interpretation provides a major work of literature in an accessible popular form. Swami Vivekananda and Non-Hindu Traditions Representations of a Universal Advaita Stephen Gregg Scholarship surrounding the Hindu thinker Swami Vivekananda is dominated by hagiography and his (mis)appropriation by the political Hindu Right. Swami Vivekananda and Non-Hindu Traditions challenges this approach and goes back to source by examining what Vivekananda said about non-Hindu traditions to understand how this affected his re-formulation of Hinduism which he exported to the West. Demonstrating that Vivekananda was consistently critical of ’low level’ spirituality, not only in non-Hindu traditions but also within Hinduism, the book will be of interest to scholars of both Hinduism and South Asian religion and of South Asian diaspora communities more generally. Ja'far Sharif, William Crooke and G. A. Herklots Series: Routledge Library Editions: International Islam
Examining the theoretical problems which arose when the modern European ideology of nationalism was adopted by Muslim societies organized into formally modern states, this book, first published in 1987, also deals with the practical difficulties arising from the doctrinal incompatibility between Islam and the non-Muslim concept of the territorial nation-state. This title will be of interest to students of Middle Eastern studies.
First published in 1832, this work was at the time considered an authoritative account of the beliefs and practices of the Musalms of India. This 1921 reprint includes an introduction from the editor, Dr William Crooke, which presents what is known about both Ja’far Sharif and the translator, G. A. Herklots. It also distinguishes the original material from the changes made by the translator and compares the book with other similar works published in the nineteenth-century. Islam and the Third Universal Theory

The Religious Thought of Mu'ammar al-Qadhdhafi
A Sourcebook
Mahmoud M. Ayoub Series: Routledge Library Editions: Islam, State and Society
Edited by Michael A. Köszegi and J. Gordon Melton Series: Routledge Library Editions: International Islam
This volume, first published in 1987, was the first to examine in depth the religious thought of Colonel Mu’ammar al-Qadhdhafi and its central place in his political, social and economic theories. The work is based on sources inaccessible except in the original Arabic. While drawn from Islamic concepts and sources, Qadhdhafi’s religious views were original. His religious openness and universal view of Islam and other monotheistic religions in particular will be surprising to those familiar with only the image associated with him in the Western mind. This title is a useful source for students of both politics and Islamic studies.
First published in 1992, this book focuses on the Muslim community and how it has developed in North America. Divided into eight sections, it traces the history of the Muslim community in North America from the nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth-century and examines different aspects of the community, such as Sectarian Movements, Islam in the African American community and points of contact between Christian and Islamic communities. The text includes a number of bibliographies to aid further study and closes with a helpful directory of Muslim organizations and centers in North America.

Islamic Ethics
New Perspectives on the Nation of Islam Edited by Tariq Ramadan Series: Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies
There is no specific Arabic term for the Greek notion of 'Ethics'. Two Arabic words are usually used in relation to 'morality' or 'ethics' in the Islamic tradition: 'akhlaq' and 'adab'. Both are referring to principles, defining what is good and what is bad, as well as determining the objectives and goals of actions. As such Islamic ethics is related to four different fields : law, philosophy, mysticism and sciences (human and experimental). Islamic ethics has become a critical field within contemporary Islamic studies as it is at the crossroads of all the internal debates between the Islamic trends (literalists, traditionalists, reformists, sufis, rationalists, etc.). Encounters in Interfaith Dialogue
Volume 1 The Cultivators of Islam
Douglas Pratt, University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand First published in 2005, this book addresses the challenges arising from Christian-Muslim encounter and attempts to enable outsiders to understand the religion of Islam. The author offers distinctive perspectives that compliment much other literature in the study of Islam and in particular Christian-Muslim relations and the relation of Islam and the west. The book is divided into three parts: Part I constitutes an introduction to Islam, Part II delves into aspects of the wider encounter with Islam and Part III explores issues in regard to the prospect of engaging in dialogue with Islam. The Afterlife in the Arab Spring
The Imperatives of Progressive Islam
Edited by Amira Mittermaier, University of Toronto, Canada
Adis Duderija
Focusing not on the youth activism of the Arab Spring, but on the death associated with it, this book examines martyrdom and commemoration as performative acts through which death and life are infused with meaning. Conversely, it shows how, in the making, remembering, and erasing of martyrs, hierarchies are (re)produced and possible futures are foreclosed. The contributors argue that critical anthropological engagement with death, martyrdom, and afterlife is indispensable if we want to understand the making of pasts and futures in a revolutionary present. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethnos: Journal of Anthropology.
This book brings together the scholarship of leading progressive Muslim scholars, incorporating issues pertaining to politics, jurisprudence, ethics, theology, epistemology, gender and hermeneutics in the Islamic tradition. It provides a comprehensive discussion of the normative imperatives behind a progressive Muslim thought, as well as outlining its various values and aims. Presenting this emerging and distinctive school of Islamic thought in an engaging and scholarly manner, this is essential reading for any academic interested in contemporary religious thought and the development of modern Islam.

The Peasants' Loss of Property Rights as Interpreted in the Hanafite Legal Literature of the Mamluk and Ottoman Periods Baber Johansen Series: Routledge Library Editions: Islam, State and Society This book, first published in 1988, argues that a close inspection of the development of Hanafite law in the Mamluk and Ottoman periods reveals changes in legal doctrine which were not restricted to civil transactions but also concerned the public law. It focuses in particular on the interrelated areas of property, rent and taxation of arable lands, arguing that changes in the relationship between tax and rent led to a redefinition of the concept of landed property, a concept at the very heart of the Islamic legal system. The Historical Encounter of Islam, Christianity, and the West
Young British Muslims Between Rhetoric and Real Lives
Majid Fakhry
Edited by Sadek Hamid
This book provides an introduction to the cultural and intellectual exchanges and conflicts between Islam and Christianity since the seventh century. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the rich history of active cultural contact between Islam and Christianity in Europe and the Middle East, despite periods of conflict since the Arab Conquest of Byzantium. The book highlights the positive traditions of cultural and political partnership that resulted in the exchange of vital religious and philosophical ideas and values.
Focusing on aspects of being young, Muslim and British, this book takes a multidisciplinary approach that seeks to normalise the subjects and focus on their everyday lived realities. The collection contextualises the study of young British Muslims before addressing the sensitive social issues highlighted in the media and finally focusing on case studies which investigate the previously unexplored lived experiences of these young people. With chapters from scholars of religion, media and criminology, as well as practitioners within youth and social work contexts, this book will appeal to scholars who have an interest in the fastest growing minority demographic in the UK.

JUDAISM TEXTBOOK
Judaism A Contemporary Philosophical Investigation Lenn E. Goodman, Vanderbilt University, USA Series: Investigating Philosophy of Religion Judaism, as a religion and a way of life, has guided millions of lives and profoundly influenced its younger sisters, Christianity and Islam, as well as contributing major themes and norms to the liberal and humanistic traditions of the West. Not all Jews are religious, and not all of Judaism is philosophical; but at its core Judaism rests on a complex of values and ideas that address the abiding concerns of philosophy and perennial questions about the meaning and purpose of life. This book examines some of the central questions around Judaism, drawing on the ancient and more recent sources of Jewish thought, as viewed from a contemporary philosophical standpoint. MORMONISM Dummy text to keep placeholder
Are Christians Mormon? David L. Paulsen and Hal Boyd In the past, scholars and others have asked whether Mormons are Christian. This work reverses this question by asking, 'are Christians Mormon?'. By identifying Mormon doctrines formerly considered heretical and documenting how these doctrines have recently gained increasing acceptance within mainstream Christian theologies, the work presents some surprising insights. Exploring the convergence of contemporary Christian theology with Mormon doctrines, this book will appeal to a broad range of students and other readers exploring Christian theology and Mormonism. Gender-Play in the Hebrew Bible
Narrative, Ritual, and Colonialism
The Ways the Bible Challenges Its Gender Norms
Pekka Pitkanen Series: Routledge Studies in the Biblical World
Amy Kalmanofsky Series: Routledge Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Biblical Criticism
This book provides a new reading of the biblical book of Numbers in a commentary form. Mainstream readings have tended to see the book as a haphazard junkyard of material that connects Genesis-Leviticus with Deuteronomy, composed at a late stage in the history of ancient Israel. In contrast, this book reads Numbers as part of a wider work of Genesis-Joshua, a carefully crafted programmatic settler colonial document for a new nd society in the Canaanite highlands in the late 2 millennium BCE that seeks to replace pre-existing indigenous societies. It is a valuable resource for students of the Hebrew Bible, and also anyone working on the history of ancient Israel, and the ANE more broadly. Drawing from feminist, masculinity and queer studies, Gender-Play in the Hebrew Bible uses close literary analysis to argue that the writers of the Bible intentionally challenge gender norms in order to reveal the dangers of destabilizing societal and theological hierarchies that privilege men and masculinity. This book presents a fascinating argument about the construction and import of gender in the biblical narratives, and will be of great interest to academics in the fields of religion, theology, and Biblical studies as well as gender studies. Biblical Narratives of Israelites and their Neighbors
Human Agency and Divine Will
Strangers at the Gate
The Book of Genesis
Adrianne Leveen, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, USA Series: Routledge Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Biblical Criticism
Charlotte Katzoff Series: Routledge Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Biblical Criticism
Throughout the Hebrew Bible, strangers are indispensable to the formation of a collective Israelite identity. Encounters between the Israelites and their neighbors are among the most urgent matters explored in Biblical narratives, yet relatively little scholarly attention has been paid to them. This book corrects this imbalance by carrying out close readings of the accounts of Israel’s myriad interactions with the surrounding nations. This book is vital reading for Bible scholars that want to deepen their understanding of the Israelites relationship with neighboring people groups. It will also be of keen interest to academics with an interest in ancient history and culture.
Who sent Joseph into Egypt? This is just one of the questions addressed in this innovative philosophical investigation of the Hebrew bible. Through close study of the biblical narrative, Katzoff explores the key connection between human agency and divine volition. Ecclesiastes and the Riddle of Authorship
The Family Romance of Martyrdom in Second Maccabees
Thomas M. Bolin, St. Norbert College, USA Series: BibleWorld In Ecclesiastes, the authorial voice of Qohelet presents an identity that has challenged readers for centuries. This book offers a reception history of the different ways readers have constructed Qohelet as an author. Previous reception histories of Ecclesiastes group readings into "premodern" and "critical," or separate Jewish from Christian readings. In deliberate contrast, this analysis arranges readings thematically according to the interpretive potential inherent in the text, a method of biblical reception history articulated by Brennan Breed. Naomi Janowitz Series: Routledge Focus on Biblical Studies Centering on the first extant martyr story (2 Maccabees 7), this study explores the "autonomous value" of martyrdom. The story of a mother and her seven sons who die under the torture of the Greek king Antiochus displaces the long-problematic Temple sacrificial cult with new cultic practices and presents a new family romance that encodes unconscious fantasies of child-bearing fathers and eternal mergers with mothers. This study places the martyr story in the historical context of the Hasmonean struggle for legitimacy in the face of Jewish civil wars, and uses psychoanalytic theories to analyze the unconscious meaning of the martyr family story. Archbishop Randall Davidson
Practical Theology, Poetry and Reflective Practice
Michael Hughes Series: The Archbishops of Canterbury Series
Mark Pryce Series: Explorations in Practical, Pastoral and Empirical Theology
Randall Davidson was Archbishop of Canterbury for quarter of a century. Davidson was a product of the Victorian ecclesiastical and social establishment, whose advance through the Church was dependent on the patronage of Queen Victoria, but he became Archbishop at a time of huge social and political change. He guided the Church of England through the turbulence of the Edwardian period, when it faced considerable challenges to its status as the established Church, as well as helping shape its response to the horrors of the First World War. Davidson inherited a Church of England that was sharply divided on a range of issues, and he devoted his career as Archbishop to securing its unity, whilst ensuring that its voice continued to be heard both nationally and internationally. A modest and pragmatic man, he was widely respected both within the Church and beyond, helping to find solutions to a wide range of political and ecclesiastical problems.
In recent years there has been an increased drive in all professions, as well as amongst clergy, for a greater measure of rigour in education, training and development. In this process of professionalization, little attention is paid to the inner shape of learning and meaning-making for individuals and groups, especially ways in which individuals are formed for the task of their work. Outlining a fresh model of practical theology at work, Practical Theology, Poetry and Reflective Practice offers a critical analysis of poetry as a resource for reflective practice in the context of continuing professional development. Building on empirical research into the author’s professional practice as an adult theological educator and professional development trainer, the study takes the use of poetry in clergy continuing ministerial development as a case-study to examine the value of poetry in professional learning.

This title was first published in 2003. What prevents the human species from finally learning the lessons of social justice and global peace in an unreconciled world? Are Christians better off? Presenting new challenges to moral and religious education, this book clarifies the true image of the biblical God around the topics of justice and reconciliation. Rejuvenating interpretations of the most outstanding traditions of the Old and New Testament, Karl Ernst Nipkow's approach of 'elementarization' - well known in German speaking countries - is introduced for the first time in the English language.
This title was first published in 2003. Western attitudes to crime were in the past rooted in concepts of sin, and therefore of hopes for redemption and forgiveness. So what happens - to offenders and society as a whole - in a world where people no longer talk of sin but of evil. If hopes of redemption go too, will revenge take the place of forgiveness? Kay Carmichael explores these dilemmas in this topical and provocative book.

This title was first published in 2003. When did churches start to appear more empty than full - and why? The very physicality of largely empty churches and chapels in Britain plays a powerful role in popular perceptions of 'religion'. PASTORAL THEOLOGY Dummy text to keep placeholder
Theological Reflection Processes of learning and patterns of belief Alison Le Cornu and Zoë Bennett Series: Explorations in Practical, Pastoral and Empirical Theology Theological reflection lies at the heart of practical theology. There is an increasingly robust collection of literature focusing on it. However, little attention has been given to what reflection is or what it looks like when practised ’theologically’. This gap may account for some of the ongoing uncertainty on the part of practitioners of every sort: those engaged in ministry, teachers and students of practical theology, and ’every day’ Christians aspiring to make meaning of their experience in a way that is faithful to the Christian tradition. This book provides an exploration of theological reflection from a foundation of adult education in general and experiential learning theory in particular. Reflection as a way of making meaning from experience is integral to experiential learning theory and the book argues that reflection and learning have a symbiotic relationship. Reflection should therefore be understood and its processes examined from this perspective. Ayurveda, Spirituality and Healing examines the changes undergone by the South Asian health-care tradition, Ayurveda, as a result of its assimilation into the Western holistic health milieu over the last four decades. It explores the ways in which the mind-body-spirit sector in the West, with its focus on seekership, spirituality, and self-empowerment through self-understanding, shapes Ayurveda’s interpretation, promotion and practice in modern transnational Anglophone contexts. As with other Eastern traditions that have gained popularity in the West in recent times, ’globalised’ Ayurveda has generated a host of competing discourses on what constitutes ’authentic’ tradition, and whether Western forms of this tradition can be considered legitimate. Atheism
Death Liturgy and Ritual
An Interdisciplinary Introduction
Volume I: A Pastoral and Liturgical Theology
Nathan Colborne
Paul P.J. Sheppy Series: Routledge Revivals
Atheism: An Interdisciplinary Introduction treats atheism seriously and fully, as a social, historical, and cultural phenomenon that has grown to become a significant option for millions of modern people. The volume examines atheism as a living social development that is best explained through the expertise of several different disciplines. It thus uses the specific tools that religious studies has developed for the study of religion—including historical, sociological, anthropological, psychological, philosophical, and political perspectives. This balanced introduction is the first book to treat this phenomenon from the multidisciplinary perspectives it requires for full understanding. This title was first published in 2003. Death Liturgy and Ritual is a two-volume study of Christian funerary theology and practice, presenting an invaluable account of funeral rites and the central issues involved for compilers and users. Paul Sheppy writes from direct experience of conducting funerals and of drafting liturgical resources for others. In Volume I: A Pastoral and Liturgical Theology, Sheppy argues that the Church ought to construct its theological agenda in dialogue with other fields of study. He proposes a Christian statement about death that finds its basis in the Paschal Mystery, since human death must be explained by reference to Jesus' death, descent to the dead, and resurrection. Grounding Religion
Methods and Theories in the Study of Religion
A Field Guide to the Study of Religion and Ecology Edited by Whitney A. Bauman, Florida International University, USA, Richard Bohannon, College of St. Benedict and St. John's University, USA and Kevin J. O'Brien, Pacific Lutheran University, USA Grounding Religion is the ideal companion and ‘field guide’ for students and scholars alike. Encouraging readers to think critically about religion and ecology, this introduction focuses less on the content of world religions, and more on illuminating case studies. These include examples of religious rituals, rites, and festivals, environmental problems, and spiritual practices to which students can apply ideas from what they have learned about religion and the environment.
Edited by Will Sweetman, University of Otago, New Zealand Series: Critical Concepts in Religious Studies There is a substantial and growing literature on both theories and methods in the study of religion. Paul Babie, University of Adelaide, Australia and Michael Trainor, Australian Catholic University, Australia Series: Routledge Studies in Religion In this book, Paul Babie and Michael Trainor compare our contemporary preoccupation with ownership and consumption with the role of property and possessions in the biblical world, contending that Christian theology provides a valuable entry point to discussing the issue of private property—a neoliberal tool with the capacity to shape the world in which we live by exercising control over the planet’s resources. Babie and Trainor draw on the Gospel According to Luke, arguing that this first century CE document offers a radical, st challenging view of wealth and possessions that in the 21 century continues to be as relevant as ever. John Wesley, Image and Identity
Prayer and Politics
Peter Forsaith
Edited by Peter van der Veer, Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Göttingen, Germany
John Wesley’s national evangelistic career between 1740 and his death coincided closely with the development of the ‘English school’ of art, especially portraiture, as well as the growth of popular print, on which he capitalised for his religious publications. In his lifetime Wesley sat for around a dozen painted portraits, ranging from those by significant artists such as Nathaniel Hone, John Russell and George Romney, to local, sometimes anonymous face painters. Analysing the ways in which Wesley’s ‘image’ developed John Wesley, Image and Identity offers a new understanding of the propaganda and ‘image control’ of Methodism.
Prayer and politics: unlikely, but intimate bedfellows. This publication explores everything from the Pentecostal religious battle – where prayer is both sword and shield against the Satanic Other – to the exchange between Islam and Christianity, demonstrating the relationship between prayer and politics in a wide spectrum of religious traditions, from all across the globe. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Religious and Political Practice.

Religion, Migration, and Mobility
Sacred Nature
The Brazilian Experience
The Environmental Potential of Religious Naturalism
Edited by Cristina Maria de Castro, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil and Andrew Dawson Series: Routledge Studies in Religion Focusing on migration and mobility, this multidisciplinary collectionexamines the religious landscape of Brazil as populated and shaped by transnational flows and domestic migratory movements. Bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives on migration and religion, this book argues that Brazil’s diverse religious landscape must be understood within a dynamic global context. Religion, Migration and Mobility draws on a range of different traditions (including Buddhism, Candomblé, Christianity, Judaism, Islam), disciplines (anthropology, cultural studies, religious studies, and sociology) and methods (e.g. case studies, ethnography, historical data, and statistics).
Jerome A. Stone, Professor Emeritus, Department of Philosophy, William Rainey Harper College Sacred Nature examines the crisis of environmental degradation through the prism of religious naturalism, which seeks rich spiritual engagement in a world without a God. Jerome Stone presents and defends the concept of religious naturalism, clearly introducing past work on this topic. This book is designed for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, as well as scholars specializing in contemporary religious thought or environmental studies. Eschatology, Apocalypse and Modern Fiction
The Performance of Religion
The Future of Patrick White
Seeing the sacred in the theatre
G.J. Clarke Series: Routledge Studies in Theology, Imagination and the Arts The creative act, claims Nicolas Berdyaev, is a prefiguration of the end of the world. To what extent is fiction an exploration of the ultimate ends of humanity - of heaven, hell, death and judgement? And how do modern authors use the literary resources of eschatological imaginings in their storytelling? In this careful yet suggestive study, Greg Clarke explores the eschatological underpinnings of modern fiction. Drawing on the work of Ernst Bloch, Jurgen Moltmann, Jacques Derrida and Frank Kermode, Clarke outlines the way in which literature employs apocalyptic imagery, narrative structures and eschatological themes such as hope, glory, salvation and justice. Through a detailed study of the novels of pre-eminent Australian author Patrick White, a new eschatological approach to criticism emerges, where 'ultimate interests' become a reading lens and a key to understanding the creative impulse. The Performance of Religion treads new ground in bringing performance and religious studies scholarship into direct conversation with one another. Poetics of Critique The Interdisciplinarity of Textuality Andrew W. Hass Series: Routledge Revivals Title first published in 2003. Poetics of Critique breaks new ground in its pursuit of a formal and critical language of interdisciplinarity. The "founding" disciplines within the humanities - theology, philosophy, and literature - are brought together here in a shared space, but one that reconstitutes the very nature of each and any discipline. Readings alternate between discursive analysis and imaginative revisioning; texts alternate between those of the critical thinker (Kant, Nietzsche, Gadamer) and those of the novelist, the poet, and the playwright (Bulgakov, Goethe, Kundera, Sophocles). In this movement between traditions, a fusion, at once organic and dynamic, takes place: theologian, philosopher and artist become one, and a pure interdisciplinarity begins to emerge into view. Andrew Hass draws us into a new critical-poetic sensibility, by which we may explore the ultimate questions of human existence and divine reality. Rethinking Religion in the Theatre of Grotowski Catharine Christof, Loyola Marymount University, USA This book opens a new interdisciplinary frontier between religion and theatre studies to illuminate what has been seen as the religious or spiritual nature of Polish theatre director Jerzy Grotowski’s work. The central argument is that through an embodied, materialist approach to religion, and through a critical reading of the concepts of the New Age, a new understanding of Grotowski and religion can be developed. Antonio Gramsci and the Question of Religion
Helm on Philosophy of Religion
Ideology, Ethics, and Hegemony
Collected Essays of Paul Helm
Bruce Grelle
Paul Helm and Edited by Oliver D. Crisp
Antonio Gramsci and the Question of Religion provides a new introduction to the thought of Gramsci through the prisms of religious studies and comparative ethics. Bruce Grelle shows that Gramsci’s key ideas – on hegemony, ideology, moral reformation, "traditional" and "organic" intellectuals – were formulated with simultaneous considerations of religion and politics. Identifying Gramsci’s particular brand of Marxism, Grelle offers an overview of Gramsci’s approach to religion and applies it to contemporary debates over the role of religion and morality in social order and social change. This book is ideal for students and scholars interested in Gramsci, religion, and comparative ethics.
Paul Helm is a distinguished philosopher, with particular interests in the philosophy of religion. His work covers some of the most important aspects of the field as it has developed in the last thirty years with particular contributions to metaphysics, religious epistemology and philosophical theology. This volume brings together a range of his essays, reflecting these central concerns of his thought. Helm's selected essays are gathered into sub-sections prefaced with a short editorial introduction. The volume ends with a bibliography of Helm's published works. There will also be an introductory essay setting out the main themes in Helm's work to date.

Apatheia in the Teachings of Evagrius Ponticus
Irenaeus of Lyons and the Mosaic of Christ
The Health of the Soul
Preaching Scripture in the Era of Martyrdom
Monica Tobon
James G. Bushur
Evagrius of Pontus (c.345-399 CE) has been renowned for the depth and subtlety of his psychological and spiritual insight ever since his lifetime. The disposition that he calls apatheia harmonises and stabilises the soul, bringing freedom from destructive patterns of thought, emotion and behaviour and enabling contemplation, through which comes ever deeper understanding of the cosmos and knowledge of God. This book, the first full-length study of Evagrian apatheia, encompasses its anthropological, psychological and spiritual dimensions. It demonstrates the inaccuracy of understanding it to mean freedom from emotion, and corrects the traditional understanding of Evagrius as an intellectualist who prioritises knowledge over love.
Whereas many works interpret Irenaeus only as he relates to certain gnostic teachings, this book recognizes the broader context of the second century society in which he writes. It shows that Irenaeus is interested, not simply in expounding the original intent of individual texts, but in demonstrating how individual texts fit into the one catholic narrative of salvation. As such, this is vital reading for scholars of the early Church as well as those with interests in patristics and the development of Christian exegesis.

Divine Generosity and Human Creativity
Reason, Community and Religious Tradition
Theology through Symbol, Painting and Architecture
Anselm's Argument and the Friars
David Brown, Christopher R. Brewer and Robert MacSwain This book presents a wide-ranging selection of re-edited essays by David Brown, with new introductions and concluding chapters by the author together with editorial orientation and introduction by the co-editors Christopher Brewer and Robert MacSwain. Over and against theologians who advocate an instrumental rationality, Brown argues for divine generosity rooted in an Incarnational logic. Less concerned with a theology of the arts, Brown instead seeks to explore theology in the arts. God is everywhere available, says Brown, and so artists might be theologians even if not Christian. Brown seeks to push logic via a broad sacramentality in an effort to reclaim human experience. Scott Matthews Series: Routledge Revivals This title was first published in 2001: Reason, Community and Religious Tradition examines key questions about the relationship of rationality to its contexts by tracing the early history of the so-called 'ontological' argument. The book follows Anselm's Proslogion from its origins in the private, devotional context of an eleventh-century monastery to its reception in the public and adversarial contexts of the friars' schools in the thirteenth century. Using unpublished manuscript evidence from the Dominican and Franciscan schools at Oxford, Paris and Bologna in the thirteenth century, Matthews argues that the debate over Anselm's argument embodied the broader religious differences between the Franciscan and Dominican communities. The notion of a soul enjoyed traditional popularity but recently the idea has been questioned, frequently rejected, and sometimes ridiculed. This book argues that persons are immaterial minds capable of surviving death Moving beyond traditional disputes between mind-body dualists and idealists to focus on what dualists and idealists agree on in opposition to physicalists, Yandell explores the nature of persons according to, and as they occur within, central religious traditions. He concludes that those Christians who have rejected the soul, and opted for the view that the mind is only the more articulate capacities of the body, have exchanged truth for falsehood. Realism in Religion and Science Clare McGraw Series: Routledge Science and Religion Series Does God exist? Did Moses part the Red Sea? Did Jesus really rise from the dead? This book provides a fresh approach to exploring the reality of God and religious events. The book demonstrates how it makes sense to ask about the truth of core Christian claims - claims often taken in modern society to reflect something about the person asking the question rather than the subject of the claim. By drawing on contemporary philosophy of science this book breaks new ground by comparing the scientific community with the religious community. We live in an age where issues of religious tolerance are crucial. Taking this community-based approach, the book argues that tolerance is only possible when questions in both science and religion are considered to be about a reality independent of us. Science and the Truthfulness of Beauty How the Personal Perspective Discovers Creation Robert Gilbert Series: Routledge Science and Religion Series When scientists describe their results or insights as beautiful are they using the term differently from when they use it of a landscape, music or another person? Science and the Truthfulness of Beauty re-examines the way in which seeing beauty in the world plays the key role in scientific advances, and argues that the reliance on such a personal point of view is ultimately justified by belief that we are made in the image of God as Christian and Jewish believers assert. It brings a fresh voice to the ongoing debate about faith and science, and suggests that scientists have as much explaining to do as believers when it comes to the ways they reach their conclusions. Science and Ultimate Reality Wesley J. Wildman Series: Routledge Science and Religion Series Science and Ultimate Reality is about the constraints that the natural sciences place on theological theories of ultimate reality. The natural-theology ideal of scientific information about nature directly entailing some degree of knowledge about ultimate reality has struggled in recent centuries, despite its modest revival in Intelligent Design theory. The complete independence of theology and the sciences in regard to models of ultimate reality seems equally mistaken. This book defends a constraint-without-determination view of the relationship between fundamental physics and fundamental biology, on the one hand, and theological interpretations of ultimate reality, on the other. It demonstrates that multidisciplinary approaches to such basic questions in metaphysics and theology are necessary and fruitful. Begging, Street Politics and Power
Natural Law and Religious Freedom
Secular and Religious Laws
J. Daryl Charles
Sheba Saeed Series: Routledge Studies in Religion
Natural Law and Religious Freedom aims to address what is relatively absent from the literature by demonstrating the importance of natural law ethics in both establishing and preserving basic human rights, of which religious freedom has pride of place. Probing contemporary challenges to natural law thinking that are both internal and external to religious faith, and examining the character and constitution of natural law ethics, Natural Law and Religious Freedom will be of interest to theologians, ethicists and philosophers as well as policy analysts, politicians and activists who are concerned to anchor human rights policy considerations in an enduring way.
Begging is a complex phenomenon, and its causes are multi-dimensional, ranging from religion, to socio-economic crime and politics. Likewise, the beggar does not belong to a homogenous group. Beggars are heterogenous in nature belonging to many different categories, from children, to adolescents, to the elderly. Street Politics and Power focuses on the concepts of begging, street politics, religion and power in three different contexts: the UK, India and Pakistan. Considering both religious and secular begging regulation, and drawing on Christian, Hindu and Buddhist engagements with begging, the book brings to the debate a wider social scientific critique of the power relationships inherent in this phenomenon. From Sacred Text to Internet
Reinventing Christianity
Volume 1
Nineteenth-Century Contexts
Edited by Gwilym Beckerlegge Series: Routledge Revivals
Edited by Linda Woodhead Series: Routledge Revivals
This title was first published in 2001: From Sacred Text to Internet addresses two key issues affecting the global spread of religion: first, the impact of new media on the ways in which religious traditions present their messages, and second, the global relocation of religions in novel geographical and social settings. The book offers extended studies of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and a wide-ranging survey chapter that refers to the presence on the Internet of many of the world's most influential religions.
This title was first published in 2001. 'An age of faith or an age of doubt?'- the question has dominated study of Christianity in the Victorian era. Reinventing Christianity offers a fresh analysis of the vitality and variety of Christianity in Britain and America in the Victorian era. Part One presents an overview of some of the main varieties of Christianity in the west ranging from the conservative - Protestant evangelicalism and 'fortress' Catholicism - to the radical - Theosophy, Swedenborgianism and Transcendentalism; Part Two reviews negotiations between Christianity and the wider culture. The conclusion reflects on general trends in the period, showing how many of these prefigured later developments in religion. This book highlights the creativity and diversity of 19th century Christianity, showing how developments normally associated with the late 20th century - such as the reassertion of tradition and the rise of feminist theology and alternative spirituality.

Hybrid Christianity
Religion in an Ageing Society
Dalit Culture, Identity and Theology
The Role and Challenges of Religious Belonging in an Ageing Society
Anderson H.M. Jeremiah
Peter Kevern, Paul Kingston and Susan Benbow
Commonly known as Dalits, or Untouchables, Paraiyar Christians are a large socially marginalised group living in India within a dynamic and complex social matrix dominated by the caste system. This book presents a detailed exploration of Paraiyar communities, focusing on their religious and cultural identity and examining their worldview within the dominant 'Hindu' religious worldview. Exploring Dalits' wider social context and boundaries, ascribed and achieved identity, and the use of religious symbolism and ritual, this book highlights various tensions and areas of creativity among Paraiyar Christians and how they negotiate their lives within a hierarchical system. Anderson Jeremiah argues that the category 'religion' is inadequate, and he sheds light on the complexity of religious belief in marginalised indigenous communities.
Religious communities in a secular, pluralist society with an ageing population share some important features and respond to the challenges in similar ways. Aged people may share a spirituality, insights and wisdom regardless of which religious group (if any) formally claims their allegiance. This book considers the relationship between ageing and religious belonging from both the perspective of the individual and their carer(s) and from that of the religious community as a whole. Essays setting the global context of religion and aging in 21st century developed societies are accompanied by shorter chapters on practical topics arising from the relationship of religious communities to ageing.

The Future Shapes of Anglicanism Currents, contours, charts Martyn Percy Series: Routledge Contemporary Ecclesiology To many people, the Church of England and worldwide Anglican Communion has the aura of an institution that is dislocated and adrift. Buffeted by tempestuous and stormy debates on sexuality, gender, authority and power – to say nothing of priorities in mission and ministry, and the leadership and management of the church – a once confident Anglicanism appears to be anxious and vulnerable. The Future of Anglicanism offers a constructive and critical engagement with the currents and contours that have brought the church to this point. It assesses and evaluates the forces now shaping the church, and challenges them culturally critically and theologically. The Liquidation of the Church From Parochial Religion to Religion on Stage Kees de Groot Series: Routledge New Critical Thinking in Religion, Theology and Biblical Studies The metaphor of liquidation provides an alternative to approaches that merely perceive the decline of religion or a spiritual revolution. Religion is becoming liquid. This book develops a fresh way to look at religion in late modernity and produces new questions for theological and sociological debate. It is both an exercise in sociology and an exercise in practical theology conceived as the engaged study of religious praxis. As such, the aim is not only to get a better understanding of what is going on, but also to critique one-sided views and to provide alternative perspectives for those who are active in the religious field or its surroundings. Australian Indigenous Hip Hop
Creating Church Online
The Politics of Culture, Identity, and Spirituality
Ritual, Community and New Media
Chiara Minestrelli, Lehigh University, USA Series: Routledge Studies in Hip Hop and Religion
Tim Hutchings, Umeå University, Sweden Series: Routledge Research in Religion, Media and Culture
This book investigates the discursive and performative strategies employed by Australian Indigenous rappers to make sense of the world and establish a position of authority over their identity and place in society. Focusing on the aesthetics, language, and performativity of Hip Hop, this book pays attention to the life stance, philosophy, and spiritual beliefs of Australian Indigenous Hip Hop artists as ‘glocal’ producers and consumers. With Hip Hop as its main point of analysis, the author investigates, interrogates, and challenges categories and preconceived ideas about the critical notions of authenticity, ‘Indigenous’ and dominant values, spiritual practices, and political activism.
Hundreds of thousands of people are now involved with online churches and congregations, generating new kinds of ritual, leadership, and community – as well as new networks of global influence. This book is the first large-scale sociological investigation of this area, offering a significant and timely advance in the study of religion, media, and culture. This book explores the significance and impact of online churchgoing in the religious and social lives of participants, as well as the relationship between online and everyday life, in search of a new theoretical framework to map religious users’ engagement with new media.

Mediating the Gospel in Contemporary America
Imagining Authentic Buddhist Identity, Community, and Practices in the Virtual World of Second Life
Deborah Whitehead Series: Media, Religion and Culture This book provides a critical interpretation of media engagement among American evangelicals today—in the age of tweets, smart phones, bloggers, 24-hour news, and an almost infinite number of TV channels. Deftly employing the methods of religious studies, media theory, and cultural studies, author Deborah Whitehead offers readers a series of richly textured case studies—on Tim Tebow and "tebowing," evangelical "mommy blogs," megachurch design, creation care websites, and evangelist Joel Osteen—in order to shed light on ongoing practices and debates among U.S. evangelicals today. Gregory Price Grieve, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, USA Series: Media, Religion and Culture Cyber Zen argues that, on a pragmatic level, digital religious practice in virtual worlds such as Second Life affords isolated and solitary practitioners a Buddhist community, if only a virtual one. It argues that much contemporary popular religious practice is a creative protest against, and also a product of, the suffering produced by the desires of living in late capitalism and an intensification of the free market, globalization, and consumerism. Examining Anglo-Buddhism’s conceptions of self, practice, and community, Cyber Zen makes the case that participants in this virtual world have developed a form of religion that allows them to flourish in a late capitalistic society. Congregational Music, Conflict, and Community
Film, Religion and Activist Citizens
Jonathan Dueck Series: Congregational Music Studies Series
Milja Radovic, School of Divinity, The New College, Universty of Edinburgh, UK
This book is the first study of the music of the contemporary "worship wars" to be based on long-term in-person observation and interviews. It tells the story of the musical lives of three Canadian Mennonite congregations at the height of these conflicts in the late 1990s and early 2000s. At their core, the book argues, worship wars are not fought in order to please congregants' musical taste nor to satisfy the theological principles held by a denomination. Instead, the relationships and meanings shaped through individuals’ experiences singing in the particular ways afforded by each style of worship are most profoundly at stake in the worship wars. An ontology of transformative acts Films from Saudi Arabia, the Balkans, Russia and South Korea are used in this book to illustrate the links between performative utterance, created scenes and acts. In doing this the author poses the question of whether citizens are stepping out of dominant cultural ideologies to overcome social, ethnic, religious and economic divisions. Thus proposing new concepts of equality, universality, and justice. This is a new and unorthodox exploration of the ontology of acts and is essential reading for any academic interested in religion, theology, film and citizenship studies. Taking seriously the practice and not just the theory of music, this ground-breaking collection of essays establishes a new standard for the interdisciplinary conversation between theology, musicology and liturgical studies. Framed by two substantive essays by leading theologians with a profound interest in music, the book’s four main sections will address questions about the history, the performance, the contexts, and the nature of music, as Christians understand it. It will show how any serious discussion of music opens onto considerations of time, tradition, ontology, anthropology, providence, and the nature of God. Music and Blasphemy
Religion and Media in China
Sympathy with the Devil
Insights and Case Studies from the Mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong
Sylvia Watts, University of Leeds, UK Music has always had links with the supernatural in all its forms, and is therefore often an important part of religious practice. However, it can also function as part of sacrilegious acts. This book asks whether music can be inherently blasphemous. Not only alongside religiously offensive images and words, but on its own terms. Using a variety of theorists from Žižek, Adorno and Attali to Hegarty, Reynolds and Toop, this book has devloped a new way of looking at the religious significance of music itself. As such, it will be fascinating reading for academics and students with an interest in Religious Studies, Music, Philosophy and Cultural Studies. Religion and the Media in China serves as a critical survey of case studies and suggests theoretical and methodological tools for a thorough and systematic study of religion in modern China. Authority and Experience in the Catholic Church Edited by Joseph A. The British Christian Women's Movement A Rehabilitation of Eve Jenny Daggers Series: Routledge Revivals This title was first published in 2002. This book presents a timely study of a neglected British Christian women's movement. Jenny Daggers charts the inception of the movement in the exciting times of the post-sixties decades, amid new currents generated in the British denominational churches, and the wider current of Women's Liberation. Focusing on Christian women's concern with the position of women in the church, this book identifies a core Christian women's theology which affirms a (rehabilitated) 'new Eve in Christ', and so contrasts with a concurrent paradigm shift taking shape in North American feminist theology. Daggers argues that this divergence is primarily due to the effect of the prolonged Church of England women's ordination debate upon the ethos of the British Christian women's movement. Muslim Pilgrimage in Europe
Pilgrimage for a New Age

Ancient Sites, New Meanings
In spite of Islam’s long history in Europe and the growing number of Muslims resident in Europe, little research exists on Muslim pilgrimage in Europe. The present anthology fills this void by introducing current research topics, methodological and theoretical approaches, and findings in an emerging research field examining deep-rooted as well as evolving religious Muslim practices in Europe. Placing the pilgrims’ practices and experiences centre stage, established and emerging scholars from history, anthropology, religious studies, Islamic art history and sociology, examine historical and contemporary hajj and non-hajj pilgrimage to sites outside and within Europe, to discuss continuity, revitalization, and innovation of pilgrimage. Jill Dubisch Series: Ashgate Studies in Pilgrimage Pilgrimage for a New Age draws on the perspectives both of the anthropological researcher and participants in pilgrimages to provide an anthropological exploration of a range contemporary New Age pilgrimages, from dream healing journeys to ancient sites in Greece, to Magdalene pilgrimage in England and France. It makes an important contribution to the study of religion and pilgrimage by its focus on New Age spirituality, by its use of pilgrimage to ancient sites as a framework for examining key features of the New Age movement; and by its focus on healing within such pilgrimage journeys. Examining the ways in which these journeys address healing both of physical illness, and the healing of a fragmented world, Pilgrimage for a New Age analyzes some of the implications for anthropological fieldwork of doing research on a shifting population that is also part of a global spiritual movement. Its chapters examine the practice of ziyarat in the Maghreb and South Asia, Hindu pilgrimage in India and different pilgrimage traditions across Malaysia and China before turning towards the Pacific islands, Australia, South Africa and Latin America, where Christian pilgrimages co-exist with indigenous traditions. It also demonstrates the impact of non-religious processes on religious pilgrimages and discusses the important development of secular tourism where relevant. 21st Century Irish Paganism
Authority and Meaning in Indian Religions
Worldview, Ritual, Identity
Hinduism and the Case of Valmiki
Jenny Butler Series: Vitality of Indigenous Religions
Julia Leslie Series: Routledge Revivals
21st Century Irish Paganism provides an overview of the beliefs and practices of practitioners of Paganism in modern Ireland. Modern-day nature-based spirituality or religiosity, as distinct from pre-Christian contexts of indigenous religions, is examined here in relation to beliefs, rituals, festivals, sacred sites, and the creation of art and ritual objects. Beliefs in magic, deities, fairies and other spiritual beings are explored. This book provides valuable insights into the lived experiences of Irish Pagans including those who are followers of Druidry and other forms of Celtic spirituality, Wicca and other kinds of Pagan Witchcraft. The book presents a detailed documentation and analysis of this vibrant and dynamic culture that relates to Irish landscape, mythology and history in unique ways. The richly descriptive accounts of magical rituals and festival celebrations that the author took part in, along with interview extracts from Pagan practitioners themselves.
This title was first published in 2003. Can a text be used either to validate or to invalidate contemporary understandings? Texts may be deemed 'sacred', but sacred to whom? Do conflicting understandings matter? Is it appropriate to try to offer a resolution? Yet for a vocal community of dalits (once called 'untouchables'), within and outside India, Valmiki is God. How then does one explain the popular story that he started out as an ignorant and violent bandit, attacking and killing travellers for material gain? A Companion to Adidam
From popular culture to religion
Perspectives on a New Spiritual Tradition James R Lewis Series: Routledge New Religions A Companion to Adidam brings together a half-dozen scholars of New Religious Movements (NRMs) with a half-dozen of the many academic followers of Adi Da to produce a comprehensive study of a highly creative alternative spiritual group. Though new religion specialists have been aware of this group for decades, and though Adi Da and his organization are generally acknowledged to be important, there have been no prior book-length treatments of this group, and few articles. This is the first published research on the current organization, its membership and the extensive corpus of literary and artistic works that Adi Da created over the past two dozen years. Edited by Carole M. Cusack, The University of Sydney, Australia and Pavol Kosnáč Series: Routledge Inform Series on Minority Religions and Spiritual Movements New religions have been regarded with suspicion by society and Religious Studies scholars alike until the 1990s, when the emergence of a second generation of ’new new’ religions based on popular cultural forms including films, novels, computer games and comic books and individualistic spiritualities confirmed the utter transformation of the religio-spiritual landscape. This book brings together scholarly treatments of cutting edge religious and spiritual trends, with contributions by representatives of Dudeism, the Church of All Worlds, the Temple of the Jedi Order, and Tolkien spirituality groups. This book will simultaneously entertain, shock, challenge, and delight readers. Alternative Religions
Identity Crises and Indigenous Religious Traditions
A Sociological Introduction
Exploring Nigerian-African Christian Societies
Stephen J. Hunt Series: Routledge Revivals
Elijah Obinna Series: Religion in Modern Africa
Title first published in 2003. Alternative religions attract great public, academic and government interest in our apparently post-Christian society. Yet how did all the 'alternatives' develop, what are their beliefs and practices and how significant is their impact in terms of the world's religions and society? This book presents a comprehensive introduction to the major forms of alternative religions: Cults, Sects, New Religious Movements, the New Age, Fundamentalism, Pentecostalism, Ethnic Religions and Quasi-religions.
Through an interpretation of religious practices and educational issues in teaching and training through ritual processes, the author provides tools to help analyse cases including the negotiation processes among Christians between the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria and members of the Ogo society among the Amasiri in South-eastern Nigeria. Demonstrating how religious identities and practices of Nigerian-African Christians can balance mission-influenced Christianity with indigenous religious traditions and identities, this book recognises the importance of appropriating the powers of indigenous cultures, ingenuity and creativity in the construction and preservation of community identities.

Inochentism and Russian Orthodoxy
Minority Religions in Europe and the Middle East
Narratives of Resistance
Mapping and Monitoring
James A. Kapalo Series: Routledge New Religions
Edited by George D. Chryssides Series: Routledge Inform Series on Minority Religions and Spiritual Movements
This book explores the history and evolution of a controversial new religious movement that emerged in the Russian borderlands of Moldova and Ukraine in the context of the Russian revolutionary period. It centres around the charismatic preaching of Inochentie, a monk of the Orthodox Church, known to his followers as the ’Prophet of Fire’, who inspired an apocalyptic movement that was soon labelled heretical by the Orthodox Church and persecuted as politically subversive by Soviet state authorities. This book charts the emergence and development of Inochentism through the twentieth century based on oral testimonies, folk narratives and previously unstudied secret police and church archival material. Focusing on the role that religious persecution and social marginalization has played in the transformation of this understudied and much vilified group, the author explores a series of counter-narratives that challenge the mainstream historiography of the movement.
Minority religions, not only New Religious Movements, are explored in this innovative book including the predicament of ancient religions such as Zoroastrianism, ’old new’ religions such as Baha’i, and traditional religions that are minorities elsewhere. Contributors examine a range of issues faced by minority religions, encompassing official state recognition and registration, unequal treatment in comparison with a dominant religion, how changes in government can affect how they fare, the extent to which members are free to practice their faith, how they sometimes seek to influence politics, and how they can be affected by harassment and persecution.

Korean Shamanism
New Religious Movements and Counselling
The Cultural Paradox
Academic, Professional and Personal Perspectives
Chongho Kim Series: Routledge Revivals
Edited by Hamish Cameron and Sarah Harvey Series: Routledge Inform Series on Minority Religions and Spiritual Movements
Title first published in 2003. Shamanism has a contradictory position within the Korean cultural system, leading to the periodical suppression of shamanism yet also, paradoxically, ensuring its survival throughout Korean history. This book examines the place of shamans within contemporary society as a cultural practice in which people make use of shamanic ritual and disputing the prevalent view that shamanism is 'popular culture', a 'women's religion' or 'performing arts'. Directly confronting the prejudice against shamans and their paradoxical situation in a modern society such as Korea, this book reveals the cultural discrepancy between two worlds in Korean culture, the ordinary world and the shamanic world, showing that these two worlds cannot be reconciled.
To date, the understanding of the relationship between minority religions and counselling has focused on the ‘anti-cult movement’ and the perceived need for members of minority religions to undergo some form of ‘exit counselling'. This volume takes a non-judgemental approach and instead highlights the variety of issues, religious groups, and counselling approaches that are relevant at the interface between minority religion and counselling. The volume seeks to explore different permutations of the counsellor-client relationship when religious identities are taken into account.

Minority Religions and Uncertainty
The Church of All Worlds
Edited by Kim Knott and Matthew Francis Series: Routledge Inform Series on Minority Religions and Spiritual Movements
A Modern Pagan Religion
Religious organizations are at their core about creating certainty. But what happens when groups lose control of their destiny? Whether it leads to violence (as in the case of Aum Shinrikyo’s in 1995), or to non-violent innovations, as found in minority religions following the death of their founders or leaders (as in the case of the Worldwide Church of God), uncertainty and insecurity can lead to great change in the mission and even teachings of religious groups. Minority Religions and Uncertainty brings together an international team of contributors from a range of perspectives to explore the uncertainty faced by new and minority religious movements as well as non-religious fringe groups. Carole M. Cusack Series: Routledge New Religions This is the first book-length study of the Church of All Worlds (CAW) - a modern Pagan religion. Carole Cusack offers an authoritative, evidence-based study of the church's present activities. The Church of All Worlds has a disproportionate influence within the modern pagan scene due their environmental focus and their attention to Gaia theology. Utilising contemporary scholarship from a variety of genres to comment on late/post-modern religious forms, this book includes the use of fiction as part of a bricolage for spirituality, identity-formation, and personal orientation. It offers an invaluable resource for all those interested in new/contemporary forms of religiosity and spirituality. Visioning New and Minority Religions Projecting the future Edited by Eugene V. Gallagher Series: Routledge Inform Series on Minority Religions and Spiritual Movements Offering an assesment of the state-of-the-field of the study of new religious movements, this book draws on the perspectives of diverse academic disciplines. Its essays focus on individual groups in a variety of geographical settings and review the past of particular groups in order to extrapolate future developments. They cover new religions that have persisted well past the first generation, such as the Mormon Church, the Christian Scientists, and the Jehovah's Witnesses, and groups with comparatively shorter histories such as various forms of contemporary Paganism, Soka Gakkai, and the Diamond Way Buddhist group.
