Olympic Television

Sport Participation and Olympic Legacies

Broadcasting the Greatest Show on Earth

A comparative study

Andrew C. Billings, University of Alabama, USA, James Angelini, University of Delaware, US and Paul Macarthur, Utica College, US

Edited by Spencer Harris, University of Colorado, US Series: Routledge Research in Sport Politics and Policy

As the Olympic spectacle has grown, so has broadcast coverage become bigger, more complex, and more sophisticated. This book provides an overview of how the Olympic experience has been shaped by media entities, across various platforms and formats. Built around a central case study of NBC’s coverage of the Rio Games, the book draws on unique access to that network’s producers and sportscasters, alongside content analyses, audience surveys and other empirical research, to explore the production, content and effects of Olympic media. Touching on key themes such as race, gender and storytelling, this is fascinating reading for any student or scholar with an interest in sport and the media.

Provision of, and participation in, community-level sport has risen up the policy agenda in many countries, as a tool for tackling social exclusion and improving well-being. This book offers a comparative analysis of community sport policy in three countries: England, the US and Russia. It examines success factors and explanations for failure, and explores the social, cultural, political and economic contexts that shape community sport in those countries. Offering a new theoretical framework and rich empirical data, it covers key topics such as governance, implementation and evaluation. Vital reading for students, researchers or policy makers working in sport development or management.

The International Olympic Committee, Law, and Accountability

This non-governmental organisation wields extraordinary authority over sport yet it has no democratic basis for its authority. This book questions the sources of the IOC’s legitimacy and authority, arguing that its accountability needs to be questioned. This is the first book to examine the conduct of the Olympic Games from an international legal perspective. It moves beyond providing a critique of the IOC and the Olympic Games to focus on potential avenues for reform. Olympic Education An international review Edited by Roland Naul, University of Muenster, Germany, Deanna L. Binder, Royal Roads University, Canada, Antonin Rychtecky, Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic and Ian Culpan, University of Canterbury, New Zealand A fundamental component of the ‘Olympic ideal’ is the concept of ‘Olympic education’. This is the notion that sport can help children and young people develop essential life skills; that the development of motor abilities, social behaviour and a moral sense can be developed through the teaching of sport and Olympic values. This is the first book to offer a comprehensive survey and analysis of the diffusion, implementation and delivery of Olympic education programmes around the world. The book includes national case studies from every major continent, with each chapter examining the cultural, pedagogical, political and societal challenges of teaching Olympic education. Elite Youth Sport Policy and Management

Sport, Community Regeneration, Governance and Development

A comparative analysis Edited by Elsa Kristiansen, University College of Southeast Norway and the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, Milena M. Parent, University of Ottawa, Canada, and the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences and Barrie Houlihan, Loughborough University, UK, and the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences Series: Routledge Research in Sport Business and Management Elite youth sport competitions have proliferated in the past 30 years, with the Youth Olympic Games representing a high water mark. This book explores elite youth sport policy and management across eighteen countries, examining issues such as: why elite youth sport events have become more common; the attitude of selected stakeholders (such as NGBs, parents/carers, governments and sponsors) towards the growth in elite youth sport; how the interests of young elite athletes are protected; how elite development systems are adjusted to cater for the requirements of youth athletes; and how the growth in elite youth sport affects a sport’s development strategy.

A Comparative Global Perspective Rory Shand, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society The book examines the ways in which sporting institutions are engaged with the local community in projects that target youth, health or social engagement, and have accidentally and informally become governance mechanisms. This book draws upon the interpretivist approach in governance to suggest that sporting organisations have become governing instruments by default, as the communities they work with and reach out to show greater trust and participation. As this process occurs, the sporting organisations adopt governance like behaviours and roles, as they ascribe these meanings to the renewal projects. Rethinking Sports and Integration

Elite Soccer Referees

Developing a transnational perspective on migrants and descendants in sports

Officiating in the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A

Sine Agergaard, Aarhus University, Denmark Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society Based on empirical research, this book offers a critical cultural analysis of the idea that sport can promote the integration of migrants and their descendants. It examines the origins of this idea; the concept of integration; perceptions about target groups, and analyses the methods, results and organisation of sport-based integration programmes. The book also considers the prevalent nationalist (neo-assimilationist) view of integration and uniformity in immigrant groups in the context of migration studies focused on super-diversity, and explores the various ways in which transnational connections influence consumption of, and participation and representation in, sport within the community. Seeking the Senses in Physical Culture

Sport and Militarism

Sensuous scholarship in action

Contemporary Global Perspectives

Edited by Andrew C. Sparkes, Leeds Beckett University, UK Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society

Edited by Michael L. Butterworth, Ohio University, USA Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society

This is the first book to explore a broad conception of the 'senses' and related issues on embodiment within physical cultures, providing vivid examples of sensory scholarship in action from sport, physical activity, leisure and recreation. This book brings together leading figures to explore important questions on how we go about seeking the senses, how we engage in somatic work, and how, via cross-modal experiences, we create meanings and come to understand ourselves and others in a variety of social settings. This ground breaking collection showcases the latest sensory research in physical culture as well as paving the way for future work in this area.

The institutional relationship between sport and the military appears to be intensifying. In the US, for example, which faced global criticism for its foreign policy during the "war on terror," militaristic images and discourses are commonplace at sporting events. This critical, interdisciplinary and international volume seeks to identify intersections of sport and militarism as a means to interrogate, interrupt, and intervene on behalf of democratic, peaceful politics. Viewing sport as a crucial site in which militarism is made visible and legitimate, it explores the connections between sport, the military and the state, and their impact on wider society and culture.

2nd Edition • NEW EDITION

Routledge Handbook of Global Sport

Sport, Violence and Society

John Nauright, University of Brighton, UK Series: Routledge International Handbooks

Second edition

The story of global sport is the story of expansion from local development to globalized industry, from recreational to marketised activity. Alongside that, each sport has its own distinctive history, sub-cultures, practices and structures. This ambitious new volume offers state-of-the-art overviews of the development of every major sport or classification of sport, introducing their history, socio-cultural significance, political economy, and suggesting directions for future research. By putting sport itself in the foreground, this book represents the perfect companion to any social scientific course in sport studies, and the perfect jumping-off point for further study or research.

In this fully updated and revised new edition of his landmark study of violence in and around contemporary sport, Kevin Young offers a comprehensive sociological analysis of an issue of central importance within sport studies. The book explores organized and spontaneous violence, both on the field and off, and calls for a much broader definition of ‘sports-related violence’, to include issues as diverse as criminal behaviour by players, abuse within sport and exploitative labor practices. This new edition includes important new material on the relationship between violent sports, firearms, nationalism and militarism, as well as new case-studies and updated empirical data.

Shaming the Colour Line Kevin Hylton, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK In the decade since Kevin Hylton’s seminal book ‘Race’ and Sport was published racialised issues have remained at the forefront in sport and leisure contexts. In this important new book, Hylton draws on original research in contemporary contexts, from sports coaching to cyberspace, to show once again that Critical Race Theory is a powerful tool for interrogating problematic social phenomena. Inspired by W.E.B. Du Bois’ statement that the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the colour line, the book sheds a critical light on the way sport perpetuates racism and the colour line, while identifying opportunities to challenge its insidious presence. Critical Geographies of Sport

Edited by Jonathan Long, Leeds Beckett University, UK, Thomas Fletcher, Leeds Beckett University, UK and Beccy Watson, Leeds Beckett University, UK

Space, Power and Sport in Global Perspective

Social inequalities in wider society are often reproduced in sport and leisure contexts. However, sport and leisure can be sites of resistance as well as oppression; they can be repressive or effect positive social change. This challenging and important book brings together cases examining different dimensions of inequality in sport and leisure (race and ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability and class), presenting research-based strategies in support of social justice by placing disadvantaged communities centre stage. It covers topics such as coaching, anti-racism, Muslim women, and youth sport, and includes innovative theoretical, methodological and empirical material. This book offers a critical examination of ‘the equality consensus’ in sport – meaning the ways in which sport policy and sporting cultures reproduce the ideology that sport is an inherent force for good. It interrogates the idea that sport offers an exemplar of equality, fair play, meritocracy, equal opportunity and that these ‘innate’ sporting values can be harnessed to promote social equality beyond the playing field. It presents a more complex and nuanced picture of the equality consensus by exploring the theoretical positions related to social equality that help identify what equality actually ‘is’ or ‘should’ be, and how it might best be reached in and through sport.

This book provides a major contribution to the religious studies and theological study and understanding of sport. It explores the dialectical relationship between sports and Christianity across diverse global cultures, extending beyond a western centric perspective of Christianity. The volume contains contributions from leading experts within the field to provide ethnographic, theoretical and theological reflections on sport in Africa, Australasia, Asia and Europe. The chapters also explore the secularisation thesis and western sports and examine violent sports such as boxing and Mixed Martial Arts from a Christian standpoint, as well as reflecting on sporting celebrity and the theology of disability sport.

Human–Animal Relationships in Equestrian Sport and Leisure

Sport and Violence: Rethinking Elias

Katherine Dashper, Leeds Beckett University, UK Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society This book provides an in-depth understanding of human–horse relationships, interactions and the embodied nature of equestrian sport and leisure practices. Encounters between humans and horses are revealing about the ways that human society is structured through intersection with nonhuman others. Caring for, training and riding horses are visceral, sensual experiences that require immersion of body and mind. This results in the formation of a unique embodied way of knowing and being in the world that characterizes equestrian sport and leisure. This book explores the individual and collective identities that are performed through involvement in the horse world. Sport and Architecture

Media, Culture, and the Meanings of Hockey

Benjamin S. Flowers, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA Series: Frontiers of Sport Sport and architecture are two of the social practices in contemporary life with the broadest impact on the world around us. This volume explores the history of sports architecture and examines the types of buildings and events that create sites where sport and architecture converge in particularly telling ways. By considering the importance of architectural form alongside key themes such as urban redevelopment, nationalism, social activism, identity, and global capitalism, this book represents a landmark study for anybody interested in the social and cultural significance of architecture or sport. Constructing a Canadian Hockey World, 1896-1907 Stacy L. Lorenz, University of Alberta, Canada Series: Sport in the Global Society - Historical perspectives This book examines the cultural meanings of high-level amateur and professional hockey in Canada during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In particular, the author analyzes English Canadian media narratives of Stanley Cup "challenge" games and championship series between 1896 and 1907. Hockey also played an important role in the construction of gender and class identities, and in debates about amateurism, professionalism, and community representation in sport. This book addresses important gaps in the study of sport history and the analysis of sport and popular culture. Skill Acquisition, Sport and Tacit Knowledge A sociological perspective Honorata Jakubowska, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society Learning how to swim or play football depends on discursive knowledge - written in manuals or transferred during training - and non-discursive, or tacit, knowledge. A young athlete may hear their coach say ‘catch it tightly’ but it is easier to show them how, and skill is acquired through practice, repetition and experience. This is the first study of the sociological aspects of tacit knowledge in the acquisition and transmission of sport skills. Drawing on social theory, theories of embodiment, and qualitative empirical studies of young athletes, the book examines how the body acquires and improves competences through practice, in which socio-cultural conditions and norms play a key role. The Sexual and Gender Politics of Sport Mega-Events

Women Sport Fans

Roving Colonialism

Kim Toffoletti, Deakin University, Australia Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society

Heather Sykes, University of Toronto, Canada Series: Routledge Critical Studies in Sport This challenging new study examines gender and sexuality in relation to race and colonialism in sport. Focusing on six case studies (the Vancouver Olympics, London Olympics, Sochi Olympics, Rio World Cup and Olympics, Israeli gay sport and Egyptian soccer ultras , the book addresses racism and colonialism within gay and lesbian politics in sport. It also investigates ‘homonationalism’ in sport, where the inclusion of gays and lesbians is closely aligned to the interests of the colonial nation-states. Most importantly, this study offers a counter-narrative to the view that gay and lesbian inclusion in global sporting events necessarily promotes global peace and international development.

Identification, Participation, Representation

This book comprehensively and systematically considers the major aspects of women’s sport fandom-identification, socialization, consumption and representation-in light of increasingly virtualized and globalized sport fan experiences. More than just a primer, the book broadens the framework through which female sport fandom is conceptualized and understood, proposing transnational feminist theory as a means of better understanding women’s experiences of being a sport fan and accounting for and explain the varying modalities of women’s sport support in an era of globalized sport fandom. Transgender Athletes in Competitive Sport

A Genealogy of Male Bodybuilding

Edited by Eric Anderson, University of Winchester, UK and Ann Travers, Simon Fraser University, Canada Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society

From classical to freaky

This is the first comprehensive study of the challenges that transgender athletes face in the hyper-macho, sex segregated institution of sport. The book discusses the historical role that sports have played in preserving sex as a binary and examines how gender has been policed within competitive athletics. It considers how transgender athletes are treated by a system predicated on separating males from females, forcing transgender athletes to negotiate the system in coercive ways, and reviews key issues and contemporary cases. Encouraging reflection on our culture’s binary thinking on sex and gender, it offers recommendations on how to make sport a more inclusive place for all participants. Dimitris Liokaftos, Aarhus University, Denmark Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society This book looks at the development of dominant, organized, male bodybuilding culture from its early period (1880s) up until the present, tracing its transformations and offering an updated account for its current "extreme" direction. Unpacking this development both in terms of bodybuilding's own trajectory and the wider sociocultural processes it has been part of, the work uses a unique combination of historical and empirical data and, focusing on organized displays of the built body as a platform for investigating the diverse body aesthetics, models of embodied practice, aesthetics of representation and formal spectacles that have marked the history of bodybuilding. The Feminization of Sports Fandom

Inclusive Masculinities in Contemporary Football

A Sociological Study

Men in the Beautiful Game

Stacey Pope, Durham University, UK Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society

Rory Magrath, Southampton Solent University, UK Series: Critical Studies of Men and Masculinities

Recent changes in men's professional sports combined with major transformations in women's leisure lives have prompted rising numbers of women to enter the formerly male domain of the sports stadium. This book explores this recent gendered shift in sports spectatorship, considering women's experiences in contemporary society. Although there is a large body of research on sports fandom, the experiences of female fans have been largely marginalized in existing research. This book is a ground-breaking contribution to the growing area of research on female sports fans.

This ground-breaking study draws on in-depth empirical, qualitative research to explore masculinity and homophobia in contemporary football. Based on unprecedented access to English Premier League academy-level players, the book offers the closest possible insight into attitudes towards homophobia in professional football and the importance of ‘banter’ in the development of relationships and identities. Revealing a range of masculine behaviours never before empirically measured at this level, the book discusses the implications for the complex and enclosed structures of professional sport, and extends our understanding of contemporary masculinity.

Gender in Physical Culture Crossing Boundaries - Reconstituting Cultures Edited by Natalie Barker-Ruchti, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, Karin Grahn, University of Gothenburg, Sweden and Eva-Carin Lindgren, University of Gothenburg, Sweden Series: Sport in the Global Society – Contemporary Perspectives This volume outlines existing research relating to gender in physical culture. The empirically-driven case studies demonstrate, on the one hand, how boundary ‘work’ has taken and is taking place at the level of media, institutions, communities and individuals; and on the other hand, how individuals, groups of individuals and organisations challenge and change dominant gender discourses and practices. The wide variety of rich case materials reveal how gender ideals not only normalize, but are actively and purposefully negotiated and transformed to create individualised and inclusive physical culture contexts. Sex Integration in Sport and Physical Culture Promises and Pitfalls Edited by Alex Channon, University of Brighton, UK, Katherine Dashper, Leeds Beckett University, UK, Thomas Fletcher and Robert J. Lake Series: Sport in the Global Society – Contemporary Perspectives Scholars of academic sport studies have long debated the relationship between sport and gender. Modern sport forms have been shown to have historically supported ideals of male superiority, by largely excluding women and/or celebrating only men’s athletic achievements. Sex-integrated sport offers a radical departure from such beliefs, as it challenges us to reject assumptions of male superiority. This book examines international case studies that reaffirm the contemporary relevance of sex integration debates, and articulate the possibility of sport acting as a legitimate space for political struggle, resistance and change. Football, Corruption and Lies

The English Premier League

Revisiting 'Badfellas', the book FIFA tried to ban

A Socio-Cultural Analysis

John Sugden, Brighton University, UK and Alan Tomlinson, University of Brighton, UK

Edited by Richard Elliott, Southampton Solent University, UK Series: Routledge Research in Football

World football is in crisis. The corruption scandal engulfing FIFA is arguably the biggest story in the history of modern sport. More than a decade ago, John Sugden and Alan Tomlinson laid the foundations for subsequent investigations with the publication of Badfellas a ground-breaking work of critical sport sociology that exposed the systematic corruption at the heart of world football. It was a book that FIFA and Sepp Blatter tried to ban. Now re-issued with new chapters that cover the current crisis and demonstrate the continuing importance of critical, investigative methods in sport studies, this is essential reading for anybody looking to understand Blatter’s rise and fall.

The English Premier League is one of the world’s most valuable and high profile sports th leagues, with millions of fans around the globe. The 2016/17 season will be the 25 EPL season, an opportunity to reflect on how the EPL has contributed, both positively and negatively, to key developments in football – and in sport and culture more broadly – at local, national and global levels. Drawing on central themes in the social scientific study of sport, such as globalisation, celebrity, fandom, commercialisation, and race, this book is the first to assess the historical development and current significance of the EPL, presenting an essential, in-depth case study for any sport studies scholar.

Football Fans, Activism and Social Change

Football and Literature in South America

Dino Numerato, University of Loughborough, UK Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society

David Wood, University of Sheffield, UK Series: Routledge Research in Sports History

This book explores the activism of football fans and its impact on contemporary football culture in England, Italy and the Czech Republic. It focuses on three main themes: the reaction of fans to security measures, the critical engagement of fans with socio-cultural aspects of football games, and activism related to football governance. The book has theoretical implications not only for football studies but also for understanding the impact of social movements and activism more broadly in other social spheres. In this regard, it will provide a theoretical perspective on understanding issues of sport consumerism, urban planning, environmental issues and health.

This book is the first to undertake a systematic study of the relationship between football and literature across South America, a region that enjoys an unusually high profile as the origin of some of the world’s greatest writers and most celebrated footballers. The book explores the convergence of South American football and literature since the first football poem was published in 1899. Each chapter analyses a series of texts that address key issues in the region’s social and political history, providing new understandings of football, literature, and the way in which polemic topics are discussed and negotiated in a South American context.

Football Fans, Rivalry and Cooperation

DIY Football

Edited by Christian Brandt, Bayreuth University, Germany, Fabian Hertel, Centre for the Study of Football and Its Communities, UK and Sean Huddleston, University of the West of Scotland, UK Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society

The cultural politics of community based football clubs

Football is undoubtedly the sport with the largest following in the world, attracting billions of fans across the globe. These fans play an integral part in determining the identity of the football club they support. Many studies have focused on the intense rivalry between clubs, its fans and the opposing identities they represent. However, little attention has been paid to examples of cooperation between rival fans. This book is the first to explore antagonistic cooperation in football; the idea that rival fans can work together despite their animosity. Edited by Peter Kennedy and David Kennedy This book explores the development of a type of football organisation that falls outside of the well documented elite professional game, the most recognizable face of the sport. Specifically, the focus here will fall upon community based football clubs which have grown out of the grassroots game. Collectively, these clubs have been referred to as forming a ‘DIY culture’ in football. Their defining characteristics have been described as anti-commercial, democratically constituted, advocating social responsibility and inclusiveness, and holding an outlook of solidarity that sometimes involves political education. Korea has become a significant force in global sport, with South Korea finishing fifth in the medals table at London 2012 and due to host the Winter Olympics in 2018. This book brings together scholars from disciplines including sport history, socio-cultural studies, sport development and sport management, to explore the significance of sport in contemporary Korea. Examining subjects such as sport in the context of relations between North and South Korea; the development of professional sport leagues in Korea, and the role of sport in the expression of Korean nationalism, this is indispensable reading for anybody with an interest in sport in Asia or in wider Korean culture and society.

Capoeira, the Brazilian dance-fight-game, has spread across the world since the 1970s. It has become a popular leisure activity for many people, and a career for many Brazilians in countries as diverse as China and Spain, and as geographically distant from Brazil as New Zealand and Finland. This ethnographic research conducted on capoeira in the UK is not only an in-depth investigation of one martial art, but also provides rich data on masculinities, performativity, embodiment, globalization, rites of passage and tournaments of value, as well as an enhanced discussion of methods and methodology.

How Small Nations Achieve International Success Vidar Halldorsson, University of Iceland, Iceland Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society

Modern physical education and sport in China are not products of indigenous Chinese culture. Traditional Chinese culture linked strenuous physical activities to low class and status. Modern Western PE and sport were introduced to China by Western Christian missionaries and directors of the Young Men’s Christian Association, and grew from a tool for Christian evangelism to an important tool for Chinese nation-building. This book examines this process of transformation of Chinese attitudes toward PE and sport, using the concepts of cultural imperialism and nationalism as a lens to understand how a Western cultural import became a modernization tool for the Chinese state.

Iceland is a tiny Nordic nation with a population of just 330,000 and no professional sports leagues, and yet its soccer, basketball and handball teams have all qualified for major international tournaments in recent years. This fascinating study argues that team sport success is culturally produced and that in order to understand collective achievement we have to consider the socio-cultural context. A Study in Figurational Sociology Graham Curry, University of Leicester, UK and Eric Dunning, University of Leicester, UK Series: Routledge Research in Sports History This book presents a synthesis of the work on early football undertaken by the authors over the past two decades. It explores aspects of a figurational approach to sociology to examine the early development of football rules in the middle part of the nineteenth century. The book tests Dunning’s status rivalry hypothesis to contest Harvey’s view of football’s development which stresses an influential sub-culture outside the public schools. Status Rivalry re-states the primacy of these latter institutions in the growth of football and without it the sport’s story would remain skewed and unbalanced for future generations. Methodology in Sports History

NEW IN PAPERBACK

Edited by Wray Vamplew, University of Stirling, UK and Dave Day, Manchester Metropolitan University, Cheshire, UK Series: Sport in the Global Society - Historical perspectives

Taekwondo

The process of converting the ‘past’ into ‘history’ involves engagement with a multitude of different sources, methods and approaches. A burgeoning range of sources has stimulated new ways of thinking and a significant expansion in the sports historian’s evidentiary base, as textual sources have been supplemented by photos, films and cartoons, uniforms, architecture, maps and landscapes, and material culture more generally. This book deals with some of these innovations, and what emerges is that sports historians can, and should, look at different ways of doing research. This book was originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport. Numbers and Narratives

From a Martial Art to a Martial Sport Udo Moenig, Youngsan University, South Korea Series: Routledge Research in Sports History This book provides a comprehensive overview of the historical, political, and technical evolution of taekwondo. Many of the supposedly ‘traditional’ and ‘ancient’ Korean cultural elements attached to taekwondo are, in fact, remnants of East Asia’s modernization drive, and largely inherited from the Japanese martial arts. Using rich empirical data, including interviews with leading figures in the field, this book brings together martial arts philosophy with an analysis of the technical aspects and the development of taekwondo, and provides a detailed comparison of karate and taekwondo techniques. Sport, History and Economics Wray Vamplew, University of Stirling, UK Series: Sport in the Global Society – Contemporary Perspectives This volume argues for a more quantitative, economic and theoretical approach to sports history. The author notes that sport can have peculiar economics as in no other industry do rival businesses have to cooperate to produce a sellable output. Another analysis examines how industrialisation affected sport, how sport became an industry in its own right and how the workplace became a major provider of sports facilities. A look at third sector economics highlights how the popularity of football provided an ideal vehicle for charity fundraising. Sport, Ethics and Leadership

The Philosophy of Play as Life

Jack Bowen, Ronald S. Katz, Jeffrey R. Mitchell, Santa Clara University, US, Donald Polden, Santa Clara University, US and Richard Walden

Edited by Wendy Russell, University of Gloucestershire, UK, Emily Ryall, University of Gloucestershire, UK and Malcolm MacLean, University of Gloucestershire, UK

Everybody involved in sport, from the bleachers to the boardroom, should develop an understanding of ethics. Sport ethics prompt discussion of the central principles and ideals by which we all live our lives, and effective leadership in sport is invariably ethical leadership. This fascinating new introduction to sport ethics outlines key ethical theories in the context of sport as well as the fundamentals of moral reasoning. It then explores central ethical issues in contemporary sport, from violence and gambling to fan behaviour and discrimination. It is an essential primer, covering principles and practice, for all students taking sport-related courses.

Acknowledging that play is central to our social lives, this is the third in a series of volumes that aim to build paradigmatic bridges between scholars of philosophy and scholars of play. It spans a range of philosophical areas of enquiry (for example, metaphysics, aesthetics and ethics) and fields of application (for example, games, sport and children’s play), covering topics such as the philosophical history of play, art as play, and play and the internet. With contributions from established and emerging scholars from around the world, it will be of interest to anyone working in philosophy, leisure studies, design studies, aesthetics, gaming studies, childhood studies or playwork.

Philosophy of Leisure Foundations of the good life Johan Bouwer, NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands and Marco van Leeuwen, NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands Series: Routledge Critical Leisure Studies This critical and intelligent new study interrogates the first principles of leisure. It explores traditional concepts in the philosophical analysis of leisure, as well as new focal points in the philosophy of leisure that are defined by recent developments in society, technology and the broader discipline of philosophy itself. The book’s central argument is that leisure is fundamentally a state of mind directed towards leading a good life. The book explores key issues surrounding that argument such as identity, ethics, spirituality, pleasure and play, concluding with a discussion of the fundamental properties of leisure and the challenge of offering a meaningful definition. Whatever Happened to the Leisure Society? A. J. Veal, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia Series: Routledge Critical Leisure Studies The idea of a ‘leisure society’ was in its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s, when it was predicted that the increases in prosperity and fall in working hours in Western societies in the 20th Century would continue. The fantasy of a life of ease for all has, of course, never materialised, but the theme remains significant, in our contemporary concerns with work-life balance or the environmental consequences of consumption, for example. This critical and empirically-rich book documents and analyses the rise and fall of the leisure society idea, examines its rationales and roles in the study of leisure, and assesses its relevance to the challenges facing global society in the 21st Century. Digital Technologies and Learning in Physical Education

Examination Physical Education

Pedagogical cases

Trent Brown, Monash University, Australia and Dawn Penney, Monash University, Australia Series: Routledge Studies in Physical Education and Youth Sport

Edited by Ashley Casey, Loughborough University, UK, Victoria A. Goodyear, University of Birmingham, UK and Kathleen M. Armour, University of Birmingham, UK This book is about teachers and young people’s learning in physical activity education settings and the ways in which digital technologies can enhance and accelerate learning. It uses the innovative ‘pedagogical cases’ model in which a case narrative details practitioners’ pedagogical intentions and processes when using technology with specific groups of young people. The narratives are then analysed to provide a multi-disciplinary and critical understanding of the possibilities and challenges of supporting learning with digital technologies. Each case concludes with a pedagogical synthesis and a practitioner reflection to highlight the links between theory, research and practice. Policy, Practice and Possibilities

In recent decades physical education has moved from the margins, redefining itself as an academic subject. An important component of this transformation has been the introduction of high-stakes examinations at key points in a student’s school career and the emergence of ‘examination physical education’ as the dominant paradigm in some countries. This book is the first to explore the growing international literature on examination physical education, extending the debates around examination physical education and how this knowledge is translated into pedagogical practice. It is important reading for any advanced student, researcher or teacher with an interest in physical education. Reflecting on practice

Edited by Romain Meeusen, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, Sabine Schaefer, University of Leipzig, Germany, Phillip D Tomporowski, University of Georgia, US and Richard Bailey, International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE), Germany Series: ICSSPE Perspectives

Ashley Casey, Loughborough University, UK, Tim Fletcher, Brock University, Canada, Lee Schaefer, Regina University, Canada and Doug Gleddie, University of Alberta, Canada There is now a widespread expectation that teachers and coaches should be reflective practitioners, an expectation written into national teaching and coaching standards in many countries. This book introduces the methods by which teachers and coaches can conduct research into their own professional practice and therefore become more effective reflective practitioners and improve their students’ learning as a result. It is the only book on practitioner research that focuses on the unique challenges of working in a physical education or youth sport environment, using case studies and applied practical examples to take the reader through the research process step-by-step. Teacher Socialization in Physical Education

Regulating Youth Sport

New Perspectives

Steve Greenfield, University of Westminster, UK Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society

Edited by K. Andrew R. Richards and Karen Lux Gaudreault, University of Wyoming, USA Series: Routledge Studies in Physical Education and Youth Sport The study of teachers’ lives and careers through the lens of occupational socialization theory has a rich history in physical education and sport pedagogy. However, as the social and political climates surrounding education have changed, so have the lived experiences of the teacher. This book pushes beyond traditional perspectives in physical education, exploring alternative and innovative approaches to socialization and highlighting future directions for studying teachers’ lives and careers. Written by a team of leading international physical education scholars, it draws renewed attention to teacher socialization research and the ways in which socialization varies across time and context.

Law is now being used as vehicle for behavioural change across a range of policy areas affecting youth sport and is therefore a prime consideration for those involved in the organisation, administration and delivery of youth sport. This book explores the law relating to youth sport in social and political context, across a range of international jurisdictions. It considers whether current law, regulation and governance in youth sport is beneficial; explores the benefits and consequences of a ‘rights-based’ approach, and addresses potential problems of over-regulation. This book is important reading for anyone with an interest in youth sport, sport administration or socio-legal studies. Teaching Tactical Creativity in Sport Research and Practice Daniel Memmert, German Sport University Cologne, Germany Series: Routledge Studies in Physical Education and Youth Sport Creativity is an essential component of sport performance. The player that can make decisions that are both unexpected and appropriate is likely to be successful. This groundbreaking book introduces a new theoretical framework for tactical creativity based on extensive empirical research. It argues for the importance of encouraging divergent thinking abilities at an early age and explains how tactical creativity sits alongside conventional approaches to ‘teaching games for understanding’. The book outlines essential rules for environmental and training conditions, and suggests a wide range of game forms for teaching and coaching tactical creativity to children and young people. DRUGS IN SPORT Dummy text to keep placeholder

Managing Drugs in Sport Jason Mazanov, University of New South Wales, Australia Series: Routledge Research in Sport Business and Management As high-profile drug scandals have demonstrated, sports organisations rarely have a coherent strategy to manage the relationship their sport has with different types of drugs (from alcohol to supplements to prescription drugs). This important and timely book argues that drug control-led integrity management of sport is more than an ideological battle around doping. The relationship sport has with the drugs industry has become a much broader management problem. The breadth of the problem compels stakeholders in sport (including athletes, coaches, fans, public servants and sports managers) to seek a better understanding of these issues in pursuit of effective strategies and responses. Sport, Doping and Deviance Athletes and Physicians in France’s Elite Sport System, 1950-2010 Christophe Brissonneau, Université Paris Descartes, France and Jeffrey Montez de Oca, University of Colorado, US Series: Ethics and Sport Drawing on rich empirical material from elite French sport, this book offers a detailed history of how sports doctors across the twentieth century constructed the concept "doping" and used it to insert themselves into elite, international sport. Including the voices of elite athletes, it explains how the use of pharmacology became a normal part of training in elite French sport, and shows that the concept of doping that is framed in simple moral terms by doctors and journalists is far from simple. Instead it results from a decades long social and political process that is filled with contradictions, and that produces a paradoxical world that athletes, trainers and doctors must negotiate. Positive Psychology in Sport and Physical Activity

An introduction

A Question and Answer Guide

Edited by Abbe Brady, University of Gloucestershire, UK and Bridget Grenville-Cleave, WorkMad Ltd, UK

Tony Westbury

Positive psychology (PP) is a fast developing domain that emphasises personal growth and the positive qualities and values of life. This is the first book to introduce the principles and practice of PP within sport and exercise. Paradoxically, in attempting to help people enjoy sport and exercise and achieve peak performances, sport psychology has often focused on topics such as anxiety, stress and burnout. By contrast, this book shows how PP builds on concepts such as athlete-centredness, flourishing, character, optimism, and resilience in order to improve sporting performance and enhance the physical and mental well-being of athletes and the general population. Routledge Market: Sport Science / Psychology / Mental Health August 2017 Hb: 978-1-138-23559-5: £95.00 Pb: 978-1-138-23560-1: £29.99 eBook: 978-1-315-30439-7 * For full contents and more information, visit: www.routledge.com/9781138235601

This is the first book to bridge the gap between the practice of sport psychology and the theoretical foundations on which the profession is based. It features a series of questions the author has been asked in 25 years as a practitioner working across a range of sports. As well as his answer, there is also a short section explaining the theoretical background to the response. To the student of sport psychology, this is an invaluable insight into the everyday challenges of a practitioner mapped against the theoretical foundations of the science. To coaches or athletes interested in psychology, this is an accessible window on how sport psychology can operate in a range of different contexts. Phenomenology and the Extreme Sport Experience Eric Brymer, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK and Robert Schweitzer, Queensland University of Technology, Australia Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society Extreme sports are not necessarily synonymous with risk and participation may not be about risk taking. Participants report deep inner transformations that influence world views and meaningfulness, feelings of coming home and authentic integration as well as a freedom beyond the everyday. Extreme sport participation therefore points to a more potent, life-enhancing endeavour worthy of further investigation. This book adopts a broad hermeneutic phenomenological approach to critique the assumed relationship to risk-taking, the death wish and the concept of ‘No Fear’ in extreme sports, and repositions the experience in a previously unexplored manner.
