Forthcoming Titles ASD Tugs: Thrust and Azimuth Learning to Drive A Zdrive Jeff Slesinger An Azimuthing Stern Drive (ASD) tug or towboat is a high-performance vessel that is responsive, quick to maneuver and extremely powerful. In the hands of a skilled operator maneuvering these vessels looks effortless and seamless -- moothly spinning around, nimbly shifting position, having pinpoint control, all while the operator's hands move the control handles instinctively and naturally. This book takes the reader through an efficient learning sequence leading to that level of proficiency. Text, illustrations and practice drills create a clear understanding of ASD maneuvering principles and assist the reader in acquiring the intuitive hands-on feel required to operate these vessels. Each chapter covers a basic maneuvering element -- teering, managing speed, stopping, hovering, lateral movementâ€and their application to light boat, barge and ship handling. This book is the first step for a professional mariner adding a new competency to his or her art of towing -- driving a Z-drive. PB 9780764356827 £47.00 May 2019 Schiffer Publishing 208 pages

B26 Marauder Martin's Medium Bomber in World War II (Legends of Warfare: Aviation Series) David Doyle Even today the Martin B-26 Marauder continues to look sleek and streamlined. Although receiving less wartime publicity than America's other medium of WWII, the B-25, in the European theater the B-26 delivered twice the tonnage of bombs and had a lower loss rate. This volume explores the history of this oft-overlooked but widely used aircraft. The story of this historic medium bomber is told through carefully researched archival photos, as well as photographs of preserved examples, illuminated through detailed captions, thereby illustrating not only the use of the Marauder, but also the details of its construction. Large, clear photos, coupled with descriptive and informative captions, put the reader on the airfield and in the sky with this historic aircraft.

The MiG-21 The Legendary Fighter/Interceptor in Russian and Worldwide Use, 1956 to the Present Holger Müller This book presents a detailed look at the design and development of the legendary MiG-21, including its powerplant, armament, upgrades, and variants. The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 was the standard fighter/interceptor aircraft of the Warsaw Pact and it stood up to its western counterparts for decades. This single-engine, supersonic jet fighter entered service in 1959, and in addition to the Soviet Union, almost every eastern European military operated the Mach 2 fighter, including East Germany (which flew more than 500 aircraft of this type), Poland, Romania, Yugoslavia, and others. With approximately 11,000 of all types built, the MiG-21 has been produced in greater numbers than almost any other combat aircraft in history, and has also seen combat with such countries as Vietnam, China, Syria, Iraq, Angola, and others. Hawker Hurricane The RAF's Battle of Britain Stalwart (Legends of Warfare: Aviation Series) Ron Mackay The Hawker Hurricane has rightly earned its place in military aviation annals. Although only preceding the Spitfire by four months in its prototypic launch, the Hawker machine was available in measurably greater numbers by the Battle of Britain, a very critical stage of WWII for Britain and its Empire. Its rugged qualities saw use in the Mediterranean and Far East Theaters, and on the Russia Front. It adapted equally well to naval operations as a CAM-ship "protector" for Allied convoys and then as the first truly modern British fighter design to operate off the Fleet Air Arm's aircraft carriers. The solid wing structure lent itself naturally to the carriage of bombs and heavier-scale weaponry such as the 40 mm cannon that dealt out a fair measure of punishment. The few airworthy examples are a poignant reminder of Britain's WWII aviation prowess. HB 9780764355899 £19.00 September 2018 Schiffer Publishing 112 pages colour & b/w photos

Maritime All The Oceans Designing by the Seat of my Pants Ron Holland, Rupert Murdoch Ron Holland's "All The Oceans" is a fun filled - and fearless - sharing of stories of both success and failure, at the leading edge of design and technology during the early days of the Information Age. -- Introducing All The Oceans. The decision to write All The Oceans was influenced by my involvement with the University of Auckland Engineering Department creating a Masters of Yacht Engineering program. The most frequent question from students, How did you do it? All The Oceans was written in response to this often asked question. I did not pursue what is now considered the conventional way to become a yacht designer. Always fascinated with voyages of exploration under sail, a natural talent for drawing, and three years working in a wood boat fabrication shop, the combination of these laid the foundation for me to strike out on my own. Without hesitation, I grasped every opportunity that came my way. All The Oceans, Designing by the seat of my pants describes how I did it.

About the Author: Ron Holland - Celebrated yacht designer Ron Holland drew his first yacht at 19 years of age. He rapidly made a name for himself as one of the most successful and soughtafter designers in the highly competitive world of international ocean racing, before advancing to bigger things. His seminal influence on the then -- new category of superyachts, those toys of the rich and super-rich, brought him fresh success, and an introduction to a world of fascinating personalities: business tycoons, royalty and rock stars. For over 50 years Holland has developed unique relationships with his international clients, allowing him an intimate view of social and economic trends during the early days of the new millennium. Currently, Ron Holland lives and works in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada. He arrived in Vancouver having spent over 40 years in County Cork, Ireland after an invitation to go for the weekend. He lived in the USA after leaving New Zealand at 15 years of age. Ron is a father, grandfather, still racing boats, and continuing to travel to any port that calls him. Ballast Laden with History Mats Burström For centuries ships were ballasted with sand, gravel, stone, or rubble to give them stability, and when they no longer needed the extra weight, it was dumped. The result was that huge quantities of ballast were shipped to new places and new continents. In Ballast the archaeologist Mats Burström charts how ship ballast helped to shape the world we live in. Ballast was often reused, sometimes in surprising ways. With the ballast went animal and plant life of all sorts, inadvertently spread to places where they are now so well established that they are thought of as native species. And it was not unknown for ancient artefacts to be found in the ballast too, turning up in the most unexpected places. This is the first comprehensive account of ship ballast, so long overlooked, and now finally recognized for its diverse and exciting history.

About the Author: Mats Burström is Professor of Archaeology at Stockholm University, Sweden. In his research he takes a fresh approach to previously overlooked remains from the past, revealing how they display history in a new light. Even seemingly trivial objects hold fascinating stories. In his writings, Burström draws on his wideranging archaeological expertise to explore the significance of objects for memory construction and remembering. The Shipping Wizard of Kirkcaldy Andrew Weir's Bank Line Alistair Macnab One of the United Kingdom's largest and last remaining Cargo Liner and Tramp Ship operators surviving into the 21st century despite the advent of the containership which has swept most traditional American and British shipping companies from the world's oceans. This book takes a look at the influences of the 19th century entrepreneurs who shaped 20th century international commerce. The United States succeeded Britain as the world's economic superpower but the shift was as inevitable as it was beneficial for the betterment of the world at large. In many ways, the common cultural heritage of both countries ensured a smooth transition. The ensuing Great Depression of the 1930s followed by WWII, marked America's global maturity and firmly planted her name on the 20th century. But time moves on and today's international problems require completely new answers. The westward shift of global hegemony may not be accomplished as smoothly and beneficially as it was before, and may come a lot sooner that many of us would think or like. International commerce is today increasingly dominated by Eastern Powers which might inevitably lead to a self-interested State involvement with monopolistic tendencies. The Bermuda Privateer The Nicholas Fallon Sea Novels, #1 William Westbrook Hailed as groundbreaking by David Donachie, author of the John Pearce Naval Series and the Privateersman Mysteries-- "All sea stories should tell you something new, and The Bermuda Privateer meets that criterion in spades. Fast paced and covering an area new to me; I was enthralled by the author's encyclopedic knowledge of the Caribbean. There are battles and conspiracies galore, with engaging characters and thrilling actions." Nicholas Fallon is captain of the schooner Sea Dog , a privateer that is fast, beautiful and deadly. Unbound by Royal Navy tradition, Fallon enjoys total independence in where he goes, how he fights, and whom he takes as crew. A woman--Beauty McFarland--is his second-in-command. It's 1796, and Sea Dog 's owner, Ezra Somers, employs Fallon to protect his Caribbean salt trade from French privateers and pirates. Wicked Jak Clayton is especially ruthless. When the two meet just off the Bahamas, even Fallon's cunning can't overcome their mismatch in firepower and desertion by a cowardly ally. Later, in Bermuda, Fallon is enlisted by the Royal Navy to intercept a Spanish flotilla carrying gold and silver to France. But a massive hurricane halts the British attack on the Spanish transports, driving several ships, including Fallon's, onto the Florida shore. Held by Spanish soldiers, Fallon and the surviving crew escape by turning enemies into friends. Once free, only one mission remains. Wicked Jak Clayton must die! The Bermuda Privateer is an action-filled sea story with layered storylines and a modern storyteller's voice. PB 9781590137659 £19.00 November 2018 McBooks Press 328 pages

Sailing aboard the American-built topsail schooner Rascal , Nico takes on the job of slipping a secret agent into Cuba, but soon becomes entangled in numerous dangers—or opportunities, as he likes to call them. Road Vehicles Car Design Von der Kutsche zur Auto-Mobilität / From the Carriage to Auto-Mobility Hans-Ulrich von Mende Text in English & German. If laziness is the mother of all inventions, then the car is its masterpiece. The earliest means of locomotion was walking, followed by riding on horses or camels; finally, with the invention of the wheel, came the ability to use carriages, which not only made locomotion far more comfortable but also brought the transportation of goods to a whole new level. However, it then took millennia for carriages to go from being propelled by horses or oxen to engines, initially steam-driven, then propelled by internal combustion engines and early experiments with electric propulsion. Cars were initially the result of pure craftsmanship, and as passenger cars were based on the concept of the carriage. The assembly line had not entirely abandoned the carriage look, but already showed a typical automobile profile: equal-sized wheels, engine bonnet, passenger compartment. The predominant body colour of cars manufactured between 1910 and 1930 was black, while all makes of car had an almost uniform appearance. As manufacturers moved away from metal-panelled wooden frames to an all-steel design, they hesitantly ventured to adopt new forms. Improved undercarriages and higher engine performance were initially limited by air resistance, which above a speed of 60 kilometres per hour is the strongest of all driving resistances. This led to the development of new body shapes that offer less resistance to the airstream. Engineers still determined the form of the car, sometimes even achieving formal elegance. It was only rarely that members of other professions, such as the architects Le Corbusier or Walter Gropius, were commissioned to design a car. Between the two World Wars North America had the world’s largest fleet of cars; this also meant that their design became an increasingly important sales factor. Professsional automobile design was established. As they continued to develop technically, cars in the 1950s moved further and further away from the physically logical form of a moving body. One of the last – and most outstanding – examples of a form with optimum resistance to the airstream is the Citroën ID/DS of 1955. Others, indeed almost all, opted for the pure symbolism of speed and power, whose most important ingredients were tail fins and chrome. Today, with a global annual production of close to 100 million passenger cars, automotive style has come to be represented by a wide range of almost every imaginable form. Architect Hans-Ulrich von Mende has worked with partners in an independent practice since 1990. For 50 years his writings and drawings on automotive design have appeared in books, trade journals (mot, autobild) and the daily press (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung). Ultimate Speed The Fast Life and Extreme Cars of Racing Legend Craig Breedlove Samuel Hawley, Craig Breedlove An L.A. hot-rodder with a high school education, a family to support, and almost no money, Craig Breedlove set out in the late 1950s to do something big: harness the thrust of a jet in a car. With a growing obsession that would cost him his marriage, he started building in his dad's garage. The car's name was Spirit of America . Through perseverance and endless hard work, Craig completed Spirit and broke the land speed record on the Bonneville Salt Flats, setting a new mark of 407 mph in 1963. He went on to be the first person to drive 500 and 600 mph, breaking the land speed record five times. In the early 1970s he turned to rockets and set an acceleration record at Bonneville that stands to this day. He built a jet car in the 1990s, Spirit of America -Sonic Arrow , to go head to head against Britain's ThrustSSC to be the first to Mach 1. Craig's subsequent crash at 675 mph remains the fastest in history. Even today, at the age of eighty, he is going strong with plans for yet another Spirit of America racer. Bestselling Titles Twist of the Wrist II DVD Keith Code Here comes the release of the long-awaited training DVD from Keith Code, A Twist of the Wrist II. Filmed in Hi-Def and utilising visual effects and sophisticated film making techniques, the 109minute film brings Code's best selling book vividly to life in a clear and dynamic way, covering multiple aspects of the technical points he discovered. The film follows the journey of two new riders, from canyon roads to track, as they encounter their own limitations and uncertainties in their riding and then learn to overcome them with the correct techniques that apply in each scenario. They gain confidence and control, start to have fun and improve. Once a rider gets the idea there is a technology then and only then can he conquer his fears and uncertainties on cornering and at that point improvement is virtually unlimited. The film delivers precision techniques for barriers to cornering such as rider input, fundamentals on steering, visual skills, braking, body position, throttle control and more. All the techniques are thoroughly explored using multiple camera angles, onboard shots and CG animation in over 1400 shots. It was painstaking, precision work that paid off, this film shows riding technique in ways that have never been done before. DVD 9780965045070 £22.80 January 2011 Code Break Books

High Speed Trains Peter Clark This history of High Speed Trains begins with the Japanese in the 1960s and the rounded nose "bullet trains", travelling at speeds in excess of 200km/h, a speed which was just attainable on the better standard gauge tracks in Europe by the late 1960s. The French developed high speed rail tracks planned to follow the topography and rely on momentum and a high power to weight ratio to ensure a consistent high speed. Not only was this a success, but increasingly larger trains were required to meet the demand. New high speed lines were extended through Europe, and were adopted in Korea, China and Taiwan and higher speed trains were introduced on existing lines elsewhere. High Speed Rail is now an established alternative to shorter distance air travel, as speeds have increased from just above 200 km/h in the 1960s to just below 400 km/h today. In Australia there is renewed interest in High Speed Trains. There have been two earlier serious investigations, centred on the Sydney-Melbourne route, These proposals are examined, and the current use of high speed train designs on existing lines, for both long and medium distance services. The first was the Country link XPT, based on the British Rail HST diesel train. The next was Queensland Rail's Electric Tilt Train, which was a modification of a train used on Japan's older narrow gauge system. Victoria's Regional Fast Rail project produced not only a much needed upgrading of the track to the major regional centres, but new trains which provide a significant improvement in comfort and journey time Peter Clark is a mechanical engineer with experience in Australian Railways, including involvement in rail and wheel interaction studies on heavy haul railways in Australia. He has written two books on locomotives, An Australian Diesel Locomotive Pocketbook and Locomotives in China.

About the Author: Peter Clark has translated several books from Arabic. He worked for the British Council for thirty-one years, mostly in the Arab world, and is now a freelance translator and consultant on Middle East cultural affairs.

Reviews: “I do hope it is followed up with further publications on the subject. We have so many excellent books about railways of the past, but virtually none about high speed rail, the railways of the future.” - David Thrower, Stockton Heath July 2012 HB 9781921719080 £26.00 February 2012 Rosenberg Publishing Pty Ltd 192 pages 100 colour illus

Classic Light Aircraft An Illustrated Look, 1920s to the Present Ron Smith A visual celebration of the wide and colorful variety of the world's light aircraft, old and new, organized from A to Z by manufacturer, this book illustrates more than 800 light aircraft types that are likely to be seen when visiting smaller airports and airfields across the globe. The text explains how each type relates to other models from the same manufacturer and describes the differences between sub-variants, giving the numbers built. For some types, an indication is also given as to how many are currently active. The aircraft fall into the following categories: mass production aircraft built in the thousands by major manufacturers such as Beechcraft, Cessna, De Havilland, and Piper; lesser-known but important production and homebuilt aircraft, typically built in reasonable numbers and likely to be seen at the local airfield. Tupolev Tu-144 The Soviet Supersonic Airliner Yefim Gordon, Dmitriy Komissarov, Vladimir Rigmant Developed in the 1960s/1970s, the Tu-144 was the Soviet Union's only practical venture into supersonic commercial aviation. Though its career was all too brief, it was a major technological achievement for the Soviet aircraft industry. The book provides in-depth coverage of the "Concordski," including projected versions, the Tu-144's production and service history, and a comparison with the Concorde. First flown on the last day of 1968â€ahead of the Concordeâ€the Tu-144 had to undergo a long gestation period before the production version entered service in November 1977. Unfortunately, its career proved to be brief; two accidents and a powerful antiTu-144 lobby caused the type to be withdrawn in May 1978. Across the Pacific Liners from Australia and New Zealand to North America Peter Plowman For just over a hundred years there was a regular passenger liner service across the Pacific connecting Australia and New Zealand with North America, the main terminal ports being San Francisco and Vancouver. This book describes the rather chaotic development of these services into a reliable and successful trade that flourished into the 1970s before the advent of the jumbojet led to a rather rapid decline and eventual termination of the trans-Pacific passenger liner. With his usual meticulous research, Peter Plowman describes the liners that traversed the Pacific and companies that owned and managed them. The main North American ports were San Francisco, Los Angeles and Vancouver. The Pacific Mail Steamship Company was the first to instigate regular operations, the route was then taken over by the Oceanic Steamship Company. This in turn became the Matson Line with its famous liners the Mariposa and the Monterey. The Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand used the Tahiti and Maunganui. Details of the liners are given, their voyages, changes of name and ownership and their eventual fate. The various company mergers and associations are covered (such as that of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand). Some of the liners were requisitioned during World War I and II. PB 9781877058967 ÂŁ17.00 October 2010 Rosenberg Publishing Pty Ltd 272 pages colour & b/w photos

Tupolev Tu-160 Soviet Strike Force Spearhead Yefim Gordon, Dmitriy Komissarov Developed as the answer to the American B-1, the Tupolev Tu-160 was the Soviet Union's most potent strategic bomber. Several project versions were rejected, and a highly controversial contest involving some of the Soviet Union's top-class aircraft design companies took place before the Tu-160 variable-geometry bomber reached the hardware stage. Its design made use of many advanced features not used previously on Soviet bombers. While being a nuclear deterrent for most of its career, the Tu-160 has recently seen actual combat in the war on terrorism. The Tu-160 story is not over yet, since Russia is now resuming production of the type to bolster its strategic potential. The book gives the type's complete development, test and service history of the Tu-160, including such intriguing episodes as the type's overseas deployment to Venezuela, and the flight of a Tu-160 with Russian President Vladimir Putin aboard. It is richly illustrated with color photos and original factory drawings. HB 9780764352041 ÂŁ57.00 November 2016 Schiffer Publishing 288 pages colour & b/w photos

Dreamliner The Boeing 787 Claude G Luisada, Steven D Kimmell Following the life of this aircraft from its initial inception to the delivery of the first production models, this book begins with Boeing's initial thoughts concerning a new wide-body transport, how the original concept changes over a period of months of discussion, and finally, a description of the final configuration. The reasoning that went into the final design is explored. Many of the new and unique features of this airplane are carefully described. The complex and basically original manufacturing process is examined, as is the logistics system developed to move large subassemblies economically and on time. The many features that Boeing incorporated into the 787 for both safety and greatly increased passenger comfort are all brought forth and explained in layman's language. The book also delves into some of the frustrating problems that the 787 team encountered. Component and flight testing is also included, as are appendices that collect information, such as specifications of the various 787 models and a listing of sales by carrier to date. Throughout the author has tried to relate the story of the Dreamliner with honesty and with a view to who might be reading the book.
