Efficiency and Redistribution in Tax Policy edited by John Whalley (University of Western Ontario, Canada) This book explores the impacts of tax policies in various economies around the world. It looks into both the effects on resource allocation (efficiency) and on the distribution of income and welfare. The main distinction which sets this book apart from earlier literature is its emphasis on quantification using numerical simulation methods. The aim of the book is to make these works accessible to both researchers and policy practitioners interested in results of national simulations and their policy implications. It sets out to analyze taxation systems in detail using both theoretical knowledge and applied methodology.

by Emmanuel Haven (University of Leicester, UK), Andrei Khrennikov (Linnaeus University, Sweden) & Terry Robinson (University of Leicester, UK) Shown here is how basic concepts of physics can be used to improve models in finance, economics, psychology and biology. Readers are introduced to how physical theory can inform non-physical phenomena in the social sciences, thereby improving decision making and modelling capabilities in research and professional settings.

Readership: Students, researchers and academics interested in public finance, tax policy and policy application.

Readership: Advanced undergraduate or graduate students of economics, finance and business; also of interest to those with a background in physics.

Essays on Economic Development in Singapore and Southeast Asia edited by Linda Y C Lim (University of Michigan, USA) The book analyzes the inter-linked and evolving roles of private sector business, government public policy, and labor markets in the economic development of Singapore and the Southeast Asian (SEA) region. The essays on Singapore highlight the government’s industrial and social policy when the growth model of the past faces many external and domestic constraints. In contrast, the essays on SEA explore how private sector business, dominated by the ethnic Chinese minority, thrive in underdeveloped markets, and consider if this might change with China’s increasing presence in the region. Taken together, the essays show how government, business and labor interact in the process of economic development. Economics, Game Theory and International Environmental Agreements The Ca’Foscari Lectures by Henry Tulkens (Universitécatholique de Louvain, Belgium)

Reversing Climate Change Carbon Negative Technologies and the Carbon Market

The book introduces students to the multidimensional character of international environmental problems in general, and climate change in particular. Ecology, economics, game theory and diplomacy are brought together in the common framework of a basic mathematical model. Within that framework, the book develops a theory that aims to explain and promote cooperation in international environmental affairs.

by Graciela Chichilnisky (Columbia University, USA), Peter Bal (Millemont Institute, USA) Who should reduce emissions — the rich or the poor countries? This book is about the 21st session of COP21 held in Paris in 2015. The title is cowritten by Graciela Chichilnisky, who proposed and designed the carbon credit emissions trading market.

Over the last three decades, wine economics has emerged as a growing field within agricultural economics, but also in other fields such as finance, trade, growth, environmental economics and industrial organization. Wine has a few characteristics that differentiate it from other agricultural commodities, rendering it an interesting topic for economists in general. Fine wine can regularly fetch bottle prices that exceed several thousand dollars. It can be stored a long time and may increase in value with age. Fine wine quality and prices are extraordinarily sensitive to fluctuations in the weather of the year in which the grapes were grown. And wine is an experience good, i.e., its quality cannot be ascertained before consumption. As a result, consumers often rely on “expert opinion” regarding quality and maturation prospects.

Economic Crisis and Rule Reconstruction

by Raymond W Y Kao (McMaster University, Canada), Rowland R Kao (University of Glasgow, UK)

This book offers an insightful discussion on the ills that capitalism and communism have meant to address, most importantly with regards to the misconceptions of “profit. The concept of the new, “middle way of entrepreneurism is advocated, in which the voices of all stakeholders (including the environment and the earth itself) are considered, thereby addressing the iniquities in distribution, while emphasizing the creative and innovative needs of all individuals.

“Chen deploys his formidable pedagogic qualities is in his description of the new patterns of international trade: global value chains ...In the future, obstacles to trade will lie more and more in measures seeking to protect consumers. NOTABLE BACKLIST :RUOG 'HYHORSPHQW DQG (FRQRPLF 6\VWHPV 7KHRU\ DQG $SSOLFDWLRQV by S I Cohen (Erasmus School of Economics, Rotterdam, The Netherlands)

This book is written as a sequel to John Kenneth Galbraith’s The Affluent Society, and provides a theoretical framework, for the first time, for surpra-surplus capitalism. This volume will explore problems with conventional theory and policy, but its main thrust comprises a theory of supra-surplus capitalism, applicable to both developed and developing countries, and its relation to inequalities worldwide.

This book serves as a textbook on labour economics and public policy in labour markets. It also shows how Singapore has been successful in establishing a world class labour market. One attribute of such a labour market is the high purchasing power of wages for the average worker for essentials such as housing, healthcare, quality education and retirement consumption, which motivates Singaporeans to work hard. The second attribute is a macro-focused labour union that works with the government, and is able to prevent excessive wage increase.

The Macroeconomic Implications of Microeconomic Heterogeneity

Contributions to the Economics of International Labor Standards

by Andrei A Levchenko (University of Michigan, USA)

edited by Arnab K Basu (Cornell), Nancy H Chau (Cornell)

Levchenko collects, in one volume, the results of a multi-year research program to build heterogeneous firm and sector models for the quantitative evaluation of globalization. The book addresses the central questions about globalization and aims to provide a unifying perspective merging traditional theory, econometric evaluation, and quantitative modeling.

This volume presents a number of new developments in the economics of international labors standards. It discusses a series of labor market institutions so far unexplored in the debate as well as the effectiveness of policy intervention, by explicitly recognizing implementation challenges. These studies shed light on the pitfalls of wholesale international labor standards prescriptions, and advocate in favor of case-bycase approach. The Rise of Megacities Challenges, Opportunities and Unique Characteristics ,

edited by Jerzy Kleer (Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland), Katarzyna Ann Nawrot (Poznan University of Economics and Business, Poland) Megacities of over 10 million inhabitants are unique entities in their own right, both challenging and supporting the policies, governance and cohesion of states. The book takes a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach to analysis of their growth. Using case studies and academic theory it takes into account both the similarities and differences of megacities and gives a comprehensive study of them.

The book is a unique collection of papers looking at different aspects of the link between multinational enterprises and their effects on the host countries’ economies. The volume studies effects of multinationals on R&D, innovation, productivity, wages, as well as growth and survival of firms in the host countries, and distinguishes direct and indirect effects through spillovers. All the analyses are conducted using firm level data for countries as diverse as China, Ireland, Sweden, Ghana, the UK or a group of countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Readership: Graduate students and researchers interested in the impact of multinationals.

Readership: Students and researchers of development studies, urban studies, international relations and the social sciences, as well as those interested in how the world economy is changing through globalisation.

EU, Russia and China edited by Steven Rosefielde (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA), Masaaki Kuboniwa (Hitotsubashi University, Japan), Satoshi Mizobata (Kyoto University, Japan) & Kumiko Haba (Aoyama Gakuin University, Japan) This collection of essays documents and investigates the conflicts in the European, Russia and China that sparked populist revolts against the established globalist order in the European Union. It shows that the populist surge was not an anomally but a reflection of the internal contradictions of globalism that sparked nationalist resentment inside the EU, and backlashes against Western “soft power” aspirations in Russia and China. Who Shall Live? Health, Economics and Social Choice 2nd Expanded Edition

Theoretical Health Economics

by Victor R Fuchs (Stanford University, USA) “… deservedly a classic book. I assign it as the only reading for the first class of the year in a health policy survey course because, except for the magnitude of the numbers, its analysis, accessibility, and lucidity of exposition are as fresh as four decades ago. And for the great many who have read the book at least once, there is a spiffy new introduction that gives Fuchs’reflections on the events of the intervening years, including the health reform legislation of 2010.” Professor Joseph P Newhouse Harvard School of Public Health and Founding and current editor, Journal of Health Economics Readership: Undergraduates in economics, sociology and public policy; graduates in medicine, public health and public policy; physicians and other health professionals. 388pp 978-981-4354-87-5 978-981-4354-88-2(pbk)

Waging Cooperation in Asia A Balanced View Towards Regional Integration by Iwan J Azis (Cornell) An in-depth analysis of economic integration in Asia. International Trade Theory and Competitive Models

Essays in International Trade Theory

by Ronald W Jones (University of Rochester, USA)

by Eric W Bond (Vanderbilt University, USA) This book contains the main contributions of Eric Bond in the areas of international trade policy, trade agreements, and economic growth. The central focus of this volume is the author’s pioneering work on the role of differences in market power across countries in explaining incentives to join preferential trade agreements and the form of trade agreements.

This book on international trade theory focuses on the use of simple models over time. The collection of 18 published articles are written in an accessible way and addresses classic questions in the field: what explains the pattern of a country’s trade with other countries? When a country’s factor endowments change, what are the consequences? These questions are best understood through a variety of simple trade models.

The Economics of International Migration

Trade Policies for Development and Transition

by Giovanni Peri (UC Davis)

by David G Tarr (The World Bank, USA)

These papers have provided the theoretical framework and empirical analysis for a rethinking of the economics of migration, going beyond the Canonical model of labor demand and supply used until the 1990s. Beginning with a simple model that recognizes the differences between immigrants and natives as workers, the articles develop the analysis of complementarity, specialization and productivity effect of immigrants in developed economies.

The author has virtually incomparable experience in both providing trade policy advice to more than 25 countries on behalf of the World Bank and also publishing quality journal articles in most of those cases. In this volume, he focuses on his work on trade policies for countries making the transition from planned to market economies; his trade policy guideline papers for the World Bank; trade policy of the United States in the auto and steel industries; and mathematical methods for modeling.

Readership: Advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars in economics and international migration.

Problems in Portfolio Theory and the Fundamentals of Financial Decision Making

by Christopher Gan (Lincoln University, New Zealand), Gilbert V Nartea (University of Waikato, New Zealand)

by Leonard C MacLean (Dalhousie University, Canada), William T Ziemba (University of British Columbia, Canada) This book consists of invaluable introductions, tutorials and problems which are helpful for teaching purposes and have a very broad appeal and usage. The problems cover many aspects of static and dynamic portfolio theory as well as other important subjects such as arbitrage and asset pricing, utility theory, stochastic dominance, risk aversion and static portfolio theory, risk measures, dynamic portfolio theory and asset allocation.

Microfinance programmes, in particular, have been gradually embedded in national strategies of many developing countries as they are poverty-focused. They aim to facilitate access to financial services such as credit for the poor. The objective of this book is to provide an overview of microfinance programmes in Asia focusing in particular on the determinants of the accessibility of rural households to microcredit. The book studies seven Asian countries such as China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Bangladesh with two specific case studies.

Readership: Students and researchers who would like to have a deeper understanding of portfolio theory.

Readership: Graduate students and researchers in the fields of international finance and Asian economies.

New Approaches to Analyzing Global Value Chains

International Macroeconomic Interdependence

edited by Yuqing Xing (Asian Development Bank Institute, Japan)

by Paul R Bergin (UC Davis)

Value chain trade has challenged economic implications of conventional trade statistics and transformed bilateral trade relationships into multilaterals. It is imperative to measure trade in value-added and examine trade relations in the context of global value chains. This book contains new approaches to measure trade and the role of global value chains in modern international trade. It introduces the input output method and a direct approach for measuring the domestic value added of the People’s Republic of China — the center of global assembly.

How does globalization in goods and asset markets alter the nature of economic recessions and the choices facing policy makers? This volume presents empirical and theoretical contributions to this vital question. Rigorous theoretical models are developed to explore how international integration in these markets provides channels by which shocks driving recession in one country can be transmitted to another. These theoretical concepts shed light on the Great Recession of the last decade, which has been referred to as the first truly global recession.

Readership: Advance postgraduate students and researchers in the field of international economics.

Readership: Students and researchers looking to understand the effects of globalization on economic policies.

Theory, Applications and Tests

From the Global Financial Tsunami to the Asset Bubbles in Asia

by William David Anthony Bryant (Macquarie University, Australia)

Lessons for Macroeconomic Policy Management

Microeconomics pictures the economy as a collection of agents making supply and demand decisions in order to further their own interests. The collective outcomes of these decisions determine the properties and behaviour of the economy. Consequently, this book provides a detailed account of: (i) the microeconomics of agents in the economy; and (ii) the microeconomics of the economy as a whole, using the Arrow – Debreu model as the over-arching framework. It also discusses a number of applications and provides an account of numerous empirical tests of microeconomic theory. by Paul Sau-Leung Yip (NTU, Singapore) This volume first provides a concise review on the global financial tsunami and the European debt crisis, and draws important lessons for future macroeconomic policy management. It details why quantitative easing in the US and the unique characteristics of Asian property markets have contributed to property bubbles in Asian economies. It explores the possibility of an eventual bursting of asset bubbles and currency attacks in Hong Kong, India, Singapore or another Asian economy, which could trigger a crisis in this region. Readership: Undergraduates and academics in macroeconomics, business economists, finance professionals, monetary and housing authorities in Asia, corporate investment departments, individual investors, analysts and people who are interested in economic policies and Asian economies. 250pp 978-981-4623-68-1 978-981-4623-69-8(ebook)

Studies in Foreign Exchange Economics

Contract, Governance and Transaction Cost Economics by Oliver E Williamson (UC Berkeley) edited by Gengxuan Chen (Contract and Economic Organization Research Center, Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences & UC Berkeley) This book brings together a collection of seven papers on Transaction Cost Economics by Nobel Laureate Professor Oliver E Williamson. The applications of Transaction Cost Economics are extensive, ranging from industrial organization and applied fields of economics to the business fields of strategy, organizational behavior, marketing, finance, operations management, and accounting. For scholars who study the market economy, Transaction Cost Economics provides a very attractive way to explain the practice of the Chinese market economy.

by Martin D D Evans (Georgetown University, USA) This book collects scholarly research on the behavior of foreign exchange rates conducted over the past twenty-five years. The collection includes papers that study the behavior of exchange rates from the traditional macroeconomic and newer microstructure perspectives. A microstructure perspective considers how the details of currency trading affect how macroeconomic information becomes embedded in currency prices, a process which drives exchange-rates over intraday horizons. One Currency, Two Europes

Stochastic Drawdowns

Towards a Dual Eurozone

by Hongzhong Zhang (Columbia University, USA)

by Bruno Dallago (University of Trento, Italy) When the US subprime mortgage crisis in 2008 spread globally, the crisis experienced in Europe turned out to be longer, deeper and more resilient than expected. It saw two increasingly divergent groups of countries, stemming from dissimilar economic and financial situation and from the incomplete institutional architecture and monetary and fiscal policies in the Eurozone. The book seeks to explore these factors that give rise to the Eurozone’s asymmetric composition and the growing difficulties that policies meet. 0$7+(0$7,&$/ (&2120,&6 *$0( 7+(25< (&2120(75,&6 A Course in Game Theory by Thomas S Ferguson (UCLA) Game theory is a fascinating subject. We all know many entertaining games, such as chess, poker, tic-tac-toe, bridge, baseball, computer games — the list is quite varied and almost endless. In addition, there is a vast area of economic games, discussed in Myerson (1991) and Kreps (1990), and the related political games [Ordeshook (1986), Shubik (1982), and Taylor (1995)]. The competition between firms, the conflict between management and labor, the fight to get bills through congress, the power of the judiciary, war and peace negotiations between countries, and so on, all provide examples of games in action. There are also psychological games played on a personal level, where the weapons are words, and the payoffs are good or bad feelings [Berne (1964)]. There are biological games, the competition between species, where natural selection can be modeled as a game played between genes [Smith (1982)]. There is a connection between game theory and the mathematical areas of logic and computer science. One may view theoretical statistics as a two-person game in which nature takes the role of one of the players, as in Blackwell and Girshick (1954) and Ferguson (1968). Heavy Tails and Copulas Topics in Dependence Modelling in Economics and Finance by Rustam Ibragimov (Imperial College London, UK), Artem Prokhorov (University of Sydney, Australia) This book offers a unified approach to the study of crises, large fluctuations, dependence and contagion effects in economics and finance. The aim is to arm today’s economists with a toolbox suited for analyzing multivariate data with many outliers and with arbitrary dependence patterns. It covers topics in statistical modeling and estimation, which combine the notions of copulas and heavy tails in order to provide a new way of thinking about such vital problems as diversification of risk, among others.

The Subprime Crisis

World Scientific Lecture Notes in Finance - Vol 2

Lecture Notes in Fixed Income Fundamentals

Lessons for Business Students by Jaime Luque (University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA)

by Eliezer Z Prisman (York University, Canada)

The first major global economic contraction of the 21st century would prove to be one of the most catastrophic economic events in postmodern history. The content of this book presents an indepth analysis of several of the leading causes of the subprime crisis, as well as the subsequent measures that were used to contain a widespread economic recession. It is the aim of this book to provide adequate information and tools for readers to gain insight on how we can prevent the same mistakes from happening again.

The book concentrates on understanding and explaining the pillars of fixed income markets, using the modern finance approach implied by the “no free lunch” condition. It focuses on conceptual understanding so that novice readers will be familiar with tools needed to analyze bond markets. Institutional information is covered only to the extent that is necessary to obtain full appreciation of concepts.

Valuation in a World of CVA, DVA, and FVA A Tutorial on Debt Securities and Interest Rate Derivatives by Donald J Smith (Boston University, USA)

Volume 2 Trading System Analytics, continues the development of Volume 1 by introducing tools and techniques for developing trading systems and by illustrating them using real markets.

CVA, DVA, and FVA, the acronyms for credit, debit, and funding valuation adjustments, have become widely used by major banks since the financial crisis. This book aims to bridge the gap between the highly complex and mathematical models used by banks and the end users of the valuations, for example, accountants, auditors, and analysts. Guides demonstrate the types of models that used and allows readers to replicate the examples using a spreadsheet.

Behavioral Finance Where Do Investors’ Biases Come From?

by Robert Jarrow (Cornell)

edited by Itzhak Venezia (Tel Aviv Yaffo Academic College, Israel)

The book presents the theory, the practice, and applies this knowledge to provide a forensic analysis of some well-known risk management failures. By doing so, this book introduces a unified framework for understanding how to manage the risk of an individual’s or corporation’s or financial institution’s assets and liabilities.

This unique volume is the first book to present an extensive collection of new, original research exploring factors that lead to investors’ behavioral biases and their effects on financial markets. It discusses how features such as professionalism, sophistication, gender, media, and culture influence investors’ decision-making in general, and in particular, how they generate (or limit) behavioral and cognitive biases. The effects of these factors on capital markets are also discussed.

Economic considerations, including efficiency, equity, production, allocation, and pollution, have expanded as water resources have become scarcer both in terms of quantity and quality. Water Economics and Policy (WEP) will address the economic-policy interaction by publishing highly technical water economics research with clear relevance for policy.
