DIFFERENTIAL EVOLUTION IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DEVELOPMENTS AND APPLICATIONS

edited by Gade Pandu Rangaiah (NUS, Singapore) & Shivom Sharma (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland) Optimization plays a key role in the design, planning and operation of chemical and related processes for several decades. Techniques for solving optimization problems are of deterministic or stochastic type. Of these, stochastic techniques can solve any type of optimization problems and can be adapted for multiple objectives. Differential evolution (DE), proposed about two decades ago, is one of the stochastic techniques. Its algorithm is simple to understand and use. DE has found many applications in chemical engineering. Readership: Researchers, academics, professionals and graduate students in chemical engineering and optimization. 450pp 978-981-3207-51-6

CLASSICAL THEORY OF CRYSTAL DISLOCATIONS FROM IRON TO GALLIUM NITRIDE

by Hiroyasu Saka (Nagoya University, Japan) The book consists of two parts: Part 1 is a standard text of dislocation theory. Mathematics is avoided as much as possible. Part 2 describes application of dislocation theory, which includes mechanical properties (including the inverse temperature dependence of strength) and dislocations in functional materials such as Si, GaN and SiC and dislocations in a thin crystal such as an epitaxial layer. Materials in Engineering NONLOCAL CONTINUUM DAMAGE AND PLASTICITY

HIGH TEMPERATURE CORROSION

Theory and Computations

edited by A S Khanna (Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India)

Contents: Bridging of Length Scales; Classical Plasticity; Classical Continuum Damage Mechanics; Classical Coupled Damage and Plasticity; Nonlocal Theories; Nonlocal Elasticity; Nonlocal Damage; Nonlocal Plasticity; Coupled Nonlocal Damage and Plasticity; Structural and Material Size Effects; The Future

The book begins with fundamentals of oxidation and corrosion. Various concepts relating to the modification or deterioration of mechanical properties when material is exposed to an aggressive environment compared to an inert environment or vacuum are also covered. Other chapters highlight the behavior of various advanced materials to high temperature conditions, an important high temperature effect called Active Element Effect, and many high temperature coatings and their behavior.

FLEXOELECTRICITY IN SOLIDS

From Theory to Applications

edited by Alexander K Tagantsev (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Switzerland) & Petr V Yudin (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Switzerland) This unique compendium is devoted to flexoelectricity — the response of polarization to a strain gradient. The effect is analogous to piezoelectricity which is the response of polarization to strain itself. In contrast to piezoelectricity, which appears only in non-centrosymmetric materials, flexoelectric effect is allowed by symmetry in any materials. It becomes appreciable in nano-scale systems, where large strain gradients arise. The book discusses different nano-scale manifestations of the effect ranging from repulsion of acoustic and optic branches of materials to flexoelectricity in domain walls. It mainly caters for scientists, engineers and students.
