ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY Pyrolysis–Gas Chromatography

45 Years of Enhanced Raman Signals

Mass Spectrometry of Polymeric Materials by Peter Kusch (Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences, Germany) The methodology of analytical pyrolysis-GC/MS has been known for several years, but is seldom used in research laboratories and process control in the chemical industry. This is due to the relative difficulty of interpreting the identified pyrolysis products as well as the variety of them. This book contains full identification of several classes of polymers/ copolymers and biopolymers that can be very helpful to the user. In addition, the practical applications can encourage analytical chemists and engineers to use the techniques explored in this volume. The structure and the functions of various types of pyrolyzers and the results of the pyrolysis–gas chromatographic–mass spectrometric identification of synthetic polymers/ copolymers and biopolymers at 700°C are described. Practical applications of these techniques are also included, detailing the analysis of microplastics, failure analysis in the automotive industry and solutions for technological problems. Readership: Student and professionals working in the chemical and rubber industry. 200pp 978-1-78634-575-2

Genomic Uracil Evolution, Biology, Immunology and Disease edited by Geir Slupphaug (Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway) & Hans Einar Krokan (Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway) This book describes genomic uracil in evolution, as a DNA constituent in adaptive and innate immune responses and as a mutagenic lesion causing cancer. Genomic uracil is as old as life and may have been a component in self-replicating molecules in the prebiotic era. The first living cells probably contained uracil in DNA, later to be replaced by thymine. The pioneering work of Nobel Laureate, Tomas Lindahl on spontaneous deamination of DNA cytosine to uracil was followed by his discovery of uracil-DNA glycosylase, which initiates repair of genomic uracil in base excision repair (BER). Uracil-DNA glycosylases are found in all forms of life and in DNA viruses, having roles in DNA repair, replication and epigenetics. The surprising discovery of enzymatic DNA cytosine deamination by the AID/APOBEC deaminases subsequently has implicated genomic uracil in the development of human cancer. The aim of the book is to contribute a reference text for graduate students, molecular biologists, immunologists and cancer biologists. 304pp 978-981-3233-49-2

The potential of these pathways for further metabolic engineering are also discussed. From graduate to professional level, cellular metabolism and metabolic engineering applications are introduced to the readers gradually and systematically, making it perfect for students, researchers and practitioners of chemistry, biochemistry and metabolic engineering. 272pp 978-1-78634-429-8

Periodic Tables Unifying Living Organisms at the Molecular Level

Feb 2018 US$98 £86

by Antonio Lima-de-Faria (Lund University, Sweden) The DNA sequencing of a series of living organisms has elucidated many biological problems. But the internal atomic and electronic evolution of DNA remains to be mapped in detail. RNA and DNA now appear to be the prime determinants of biological evolution leading to the sudden appearance of novel organism structures and functions that emerge “ready made” as a surprise to the organism. This has been demonstrated by the manipulation of genes that led to the sudden production of additional complete wings and legs in flies and birds. The study of this internal atomic construction of macromolecules is being investigated at the large electron accelerators such as the MAX IV Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, Lund University, Sweden. The periodicity of the chemical elements is well known from its iconic Table. Significantly, this periodicity can now be seen to extend to the properties of living organisms. Biological properties as different as: flight, vision, luminescence and regeneration, as well as others, show unexpectedly periodic emergence. They resurface, without previous announcement, in most unrelated plant and animal families and they emerge irrespective of whether the organism is a simple invertebrate or a most complex mammal. This book contains a unique treatment of periodicity at the biological level and of DNA’s own atomic evolution 332pp 978-981-3227-00-2

This invaluable book focuses on the mechanisms of formation of a solidelectrolyte interphase (SEI) on the electrode surfaces of lithium-ion batteries. The SEI film is due to electrochemical reduction of species present in the electrolyte. It is widely recognized that the presence of the film plays an essential role in the battery performance, and its very nature can determine an extended (or shorter) life for the battery. In spite of the numerous related research efforts, details on the stability of the SEI composition and its influence on the battery capacity are still controversial. This book carefully analyzes and discusses the most recent findings and advances on this topic. :: Textbook Spectroscopic Identification of Organic Molecules

by Mohamed Hilmy Elnagdi (Cairo University, Egypt), Kamal Usef Sadek (Minia University, Egypt) & Ramadan Ahmed Mekheimer (Minia University, Egypt) Researchers in the fields of organic synthesis, pharmaceutical research as well as cosmetic and agrochemicals industries need to confirm the structures of products they obtain. This was previously a time-consuming a process that took up much time. Spectroscopic methods however, made it easier, and initially R and UV helped chemists conclude structures one way or another. Initially 1D NMR, 2D NMR and sophisticated NMR measurements like COESY and NOESY were of great assistance. This book demonstrates principles to conclude structures of simple molecules, mainly heterocycles of interest for researchers in fields indicated above. However, it is insufficient to only understand the principles, and one should also master problem solving and thinking. This book demonstrates simple problems like the utility of coupling constants, NOE, COESY and NOESY and show how firm conclusions are obtained in real life.

Ultrafast Optics and Spectroscopy in Physical Chemistry by Atanu Bhattacharya (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India)

The primary goal of this text book is that any student (beginner), even one who has never heard of the subject, should be able to learn what ultrafast spectroscopy is, why optics related to the subject requires special attention, how to use the basic ideas of the subject in laboratory-based ultrafast spectroscopy experiments, and how to interpret the experimental observations, and so on. Furthermore, the book should be studied without any help from an expert in the field. The level of mathematics is suitably selected in the book so that any student with basic knowledge of algebra, differentiation and integration would comfortably go through the book. As chemists often tend to see the physical picture of a mathematical formula, significant discussion on the meaning of mathematical expressions used in the text is included. by Luigi Fabbrizzi (Universitàdi Pavia, Italy) Cryptands were introduced by Jean-Marie Lehn in 1969 as cage-shaped selective ligands for alkali and alkaline-earth metal ions, which lie at the heart of supramolecular chemistry. This book reports on much of the research in the field since the ‘70s, and looks at, amongst other topics, metal coordination chemistry, anion coordination chemistry, the encapsulation and taming of reactive anions, the formation of cascade complexes and the design of fluorescent sensors for ionic analytes. This book has been written as a coursebook, structured as a series of lectures for graduate students or advanced researchers in chemistry, materials science, chemical biology and nanotechnology. It is fully illustrated to show experiments and results, and is intended to stimulate further interest in this fertile field of supramolecular chemistry. Chapters are preceded by a Foreword by Jean-Marie Lehn Jan 2018 US$118 £104

Hyperspherical Harmonics and Their Physical Applications by James Emil Avery & John Scales Avery (University of Copenhagen, Denmark)

This book aims to change the theory of hyperspherical harmonics from an esoteric field, mastered by specialists, into an easily-used tool with a place in the working kit of all theoretical physicists, theoretical chemists and mathematicians. The theory presented here is accessible without the knowledge of Lie-groups and representation theory, and can be understood with an ordinary knowledge of calculus. The book is accompanied by programs and exercises designed for teaching and practical use. Readership: Scientists and researchers in theoretical physics, theoretical chemistry, and mathematics. 300pp 978-981-3229-29-7
