Dredging in the Swiss Alps Since summer 2016, a duty cycle crawler crane type HS 8130 HD from Liebherr is operating amidst the Swiss Alps. The duty cycle crawler crane is being used to dredge large amounts of sediment on the filter grids of the Lake Luzzone reservoir in the Swiss canton of Ticino John Melegatti

t depths of up to 200 m, a total of 125,000m3 of material has accumulated in close proximity to the power station. In order to carry out the dredging work the HS 8130 HD is equipped with a mechanical clamshell

bucket from Negrini, which was specially produced by the Italian manufacturer for this specific assignment. Thanks to its large filling capacity of 10 m3, an average hourly handling performance of about 130m3 can be achieved.

The delivery of the HS 8130 HD to Lake Luzzone imposed an immense challenge. On the way to its jobsite the duty cycle crawler crane did not only have to negotiate numerous hairpin bends but also pass through two narrow tunnels and cross a 225 m high dam.

The assembly was carried out directly on the shore of the reservoir with the aid of a Liebherr mobile crane. Subsequently the duty cycle crawler crane was driven onto and mounted on a barge, which was also assembled on-site.

And so the work could begin. It is anticipated that the duty cycle crawler crane will be operating on the high altitude reservoir in the Swiss Alps, between May and October, for two years.â—€

tries on an exhibition area (including internal and external) of 35,000 square meters, 30% more than 2015. “Significant numbers that confirm that OMC, the main oil and gas exhibition in the Mediterranean area, is an important point of reference not only for companies in the sector but also for the producing countries,” said Chairman of OMC Innocenzo Titone, closing the work of the thirteenth edition. “The three days of Ravenna stood out especially for the high quality of the panel who represented an opportu-

nity of dialogue between ministers and energy industry CEO to design strategies that will be implemented to guide the transition to a sustainable energy mix”. Bonatti was a protagonist of the event with thousands of visitors at its stand: they could appreciate, in addition to the challenges of the company’s latest projects, the technological innovation in the field of automatic welding and the development of the know-how in the well production services.◀

ith over 2.7 million inhabitants, Toronto is the biggest city in Canada. The Greater Toronto Area has grown to over 6.4 million. Its role as the country’s major economic center and one of the biggest financial hubs in the world as well as its array of cultural offerings make the city on Lake Ontario an ever-growing mega metropolis. Hi-

gh-rise after high-rise are emerging in the city’s skyline. The renowned and award-winning company Tribute Communities, for example, is currently building three multi-story apartment houses on a 2.42 ha plot – one with 26 floors, one with 34 floors and one with 43 floors. A total of around 1,100 apartments will be created as part of this project which goes by the name of “Parkside Square”. The Canadian Bauer Maschinen client Deep Foundations Contractors Inc. is carrying out the foundation work for the Parkside Square project and in order to install the 28 m deep secant pile wall and 20 m deep single piles has opted for the latest equipment technology from Bauer: the BAUER BG 46, the most powerful rotary drilling rig currently on the market. “The reason we bought the BG 46 was to enable us to install deeper secant cutoff walls at a good production rate,”

says Mike Cianchetti, Vice President of Operations at Deep Foundations. “Currently, with the BG 39s we are able to achieve depths of 38 to 40 m at 1,000 mm diameter, but occasionally we need to use oscillators or torque multipliers to achieve these depths. Now, with the BG 46 we will be able to achieve greater depths, over 45 m, with 1,320 mm casings. All with maintaining a verticality within 0.5 %.” The PremiumLine heavy-duty rotary drilling rig, showcased for the very first time by BAUER Maschinen GmbH in spring 2016 at Bauma in Munich, Germany, features a KDK 550 S rotary head which generates torques up to 553 kNm. In addition, it is possible to apply a torque of 700 kNm to the casing using a mechanically mounted torque converter. This allows the drilling rig to insert casings deeper into the ground and to react to unexpected geotechnical conditions better than

any other machine. To cope with the enormous forces, Bauer relies on the extremely robust V-kinematics for the mast attachment which have proven themselves over many years. Moreover, the machine, which is over 33 m tall, offers a flexible mast concept that enables the advance system to be optimized specifically for the particular process or application. The optional single-layer piggyback winch allows the complete pulling force of 450 kN to be used in full wi-

thout reduction in any working situation. Thanks to the high-performance base carrier and the dual motor concept, the winch still has a lifting speed of 50 m per minute even with a load of 300 kNm, thus guaranteeing a highly efficient drilling operation. In the development of the BG 46, there was special focus on low noise emission and low fuel consumption through an individual consumption control. This was implemented through the Energy-Efficient Power (EEP)

system. Despite considerably greater torque and drilling performance, the fuel consumption could be reduced significantly compared to the predecessor machines. With regard to safety as well, the BG 46 has been equipped in accordance with the latest Bauer-standards: warning flash lights have been fixed such that they are at the eye level of the site personnel. Cameras cover areas that are not directly in the operator’s field of vision. Safe rig assembly was also given due consideration. Handling of heavy components, such as bolts, is omitted owing to the use of hydraulic connection elements, e.g. on the rotary drives and supporting trestle. Deep Foundations Contractors Inc. – with Bill Starke as Chief Executive Officer and Michael Cianchetti as Vice President of Operations – has been a loyal client of BAUER Maschinen GmbH for many years now. “In 2000, the company was one of the first in North America to own a hydraulic drilling rig. Since then, its equipment fleet has grown significantly”, reports Ray Kemppainen, Branch Manager at ECA Canada. ECA has been a dealer and service partner of BAUER Maschinen GmbH for the US and Canadian East Coast since 2004 and also officially became a certified “BAUER Service Partner” in 2015. Deep Foundations Contractors Inc. currently owns 17 Bauer and seven Klemm machines in total. With more than 250 employees, the company constructs pile foundations and excavation pit retaining structures for various residential, industrial and infrastructure projects across Canada.◀

eptember 25, 2016, 10.44 a.m. local local time in Doha, Hamad International Airport: unstoppable and precisely a 7 meter tunnel boring machine pierces the final target wall of the “Red Line South”. It is the last of 76 breakthroughs in the gigantic milestone project Doha Metro. The TBM breaking through marks the spectacular finale of one of the most ambitious tunnel structures in the world. Cleverly master-planned and highly professionally directed by client Qatar Rail, it took just 26 months to provide the capital of Qatar with three city-wide metro lines: 111 kilometers of brand new, ultra-modern metro tunnel systems. Where before there was nothing, at

peak times 2.5 kilometers of tunnel per week were added underground. The result is not only an entry in the Guinness Book of Records. “The world has never seen such performance. What Qatar Rail and our contractors in Doha have accomplished in just 26 months of construction time with the highest standards of performance, safety and quality is an absolutely Olympic achievement in modern infrastructure development,” says Herrenknecht Chairman of the Board of Management Dr.-Ing. E.h. Martin Herrenknecht in summing up the mega tunnelling project Doha Metro that was brilliantly completed on September 25, 2016 with the final

On September 25, VIPs and project participants celebrated the final breakthrough together. Guests at the ceremony included (from left to right) the CEO and Chairman of Qatar Rail Abdulla Abdulaziz Turki al Subaie, the German ambassador to Qatar HansUdo Muzel, the Minister of Transport and Communication of Qatar H.E. After the arrival of the first machine in the capital of Qatar and the assembly on site, in August 2014 excavation of the new metro lines for Doha began. For the coordination of all work on the three lines optimally harmonized teamwork was essential

breakthrough of one of the company’s EPB Shields. High-level political guests such as the Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior H.E. Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani, the Minister of Transport and Communication of Qatar H.E. Jassim Saif Ahmed al Sulaiti as well as the ambassadors of France, Korea and Japan in Qatar showed their admiration at an official completion ceremony. A total of around 200 guests, including the top management of Qatar Rail and leading representatives of the joint venture contractors, celebrated a unique technical construction and engineering achievement. 111 kilometers of newly bored and built tunnels under the capital of Qatar in just over two years outshine everything previously achieved in urban metro tunnelling worldwide.

Tunnelled into the Guinness Book of Records From August 2014 to September 2016, on three main lines (Red Line, Green Line, Gold Line) four international joint ventures consistently pushed forward a total of 21 TBMs designed and equipped by Herrenknecht specifically for the project. A performance presentation of superlatives. 470,497 individual concrete segments (so-called lining segments) were mechanically assembled into 70,071 high quality tunnel rings. At peak times 20 TBMs tunnelled their way forward simultaneously, 2.5 kilometers per week of spotless metro tunnels grew under Doha. This Olympic quality parallel

The four joint ventures ordered a total of 21 Herrenknecht EPB Shields for the metro construction in the metropolis of Doha. In just two years they excavated 111 kilometers of new, high quality tunnels.

performance has gained the project a place in the Guinness Book of Records. In addition to the geology consisting primarily of Simsima Limestone, the demands on each TBM were complex – just from the dense urban development alone. The routes of the individual metro lines run under highly populated areas, for example near the impressive beach promenade Corniche, under the high-rise neighborhoods of Doha City and the tourist centers with their attractive hotel facilities. Settlement-free tunnelling was therefo-

re one of the core requirements during construction.

Ideally prepared for all eventualities With innovative German tunnelling technology the construction joint ventures completed a total of 76 breakthroughs; more than 40 times the machines were quickly pushed forward in intermediate shafts ready for the next section – and once again tuned for speed. Up to 125 Herrenknecht service staff and specialists from 19 countries were

at hand wherever contractors, machine technology and extraordinary events required them. In order to keep to the ambitious masterplan and the tight schedules, man and machine were in operation on the huge construction site around the clock, seven days a week. In addition to excellent planning, expertise and high material and machine quality, for Dr. Markus Demmler, Senior Director of the Qatar Integrated Railway Project, one prerequisite was vital for the success of the project: “Managing 21 TBMs wor-

king smoothly beneath a metropolis like Doha is only possible with 100 percent commitment from all partners involved.” All the participating companies handled the gigantic project with pioneering boldness and the highest degree of team spirit and operational professionalism. The Herrenknecht full-service competence center set up near Doha specifically for the project provided additional support. Competent and proactive contacts were available here for all matters relating to tunnelling technology, assembly and disassembly, provision of specialist personnel, tunnelling support, spare and wear parts management as well as the maintenance and refurbishment of the used cutting tools.

The centerpiece of a grand vision The newly emerging metro system in Doha is only the beginning of the mobilization of public transport in Qatar. Whether in the urban centers or in the countryside – everywhere people will be able to travel by public transport. “Qatar’s vision is to connect every corner of the country by public transport,” explains Demmler. “The Doha Metro project represents the supporting backbone of an integrated public transport system,” says Qatar’s Minister of Transport Katar H.E. Jassim Saif Ahmed al Sulaiti in describing the substantial significance of the metro network, the first three lines of which are scheduled to be opened by 2020. By 2026 an extensive expansion by 72 additional stations and another metro line is planned. The station Msheireb in the center of the metropolis already forms the accumulation point of the whole system. All lines meet here, 12 breakthroughs ended at this mammoth station alone. Linked in all directions of the city, soon every metro

journey will save valuable time and several kilograms of polluting greenhouse gases compared to a trip by car. Acceleration, mobility and environmental protection are the driving forces of the mega project. The development of the regional and national network will conveniently bring all residents of Qatar closer together. In 26 months, four international construction joint ventures have built a 111 kilometer metro tunnel system in Doha on three lines – a new benchmark worldwide. Cleverly master-planned and highly professionally directed by client Qatar Rail, a rapid pace was maintained at all times while ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality and health. he Suez Canal, 194 km long, is a critical international maritime waterway for navigating ships from Europe to Asia without the need to circumnavigate Africa. The project “New Suez Canal,” cost roughly 6.5 billion euros and includes the construction of a 35 km channel parallel to the current one, the dredging and 3 km widening of other channels (to allow passage of Great Ships, in particular, the super tankers and merchant giants), the construction of six tunnels for automotive and railway use, and the construction of five ports in Port Said. As part of the mega project, the Egyptian government developed a project for Port Said, the principal Egyptian transshipment port located along the Suez Canal. The project is designed to expand and rehabilitate Port Said and Port Said East to improve their management and operations. Work conducted in the ports will help to double the capacity of ships it can receive. Settlement problems of soil containing clay layers with deep extensions (such as in Nile Delta and PortSaid regions) are common. From the

morphological point of view, the job site area is basically flat with an average share of natural ground level located between +1.5 and +2.0 m above the sea level. The stratigraphy is formed basically of clay and silty clay throughout the excavation depth. The piles are designed with a diameter of 1200 mm and a maximum depth of 74 m. The excavation is performed

by using bentonite mud and an 8-12 m long temporary casing installed by the same rig. Within the project of Port Said harbors expansion, many Soilmec rigs have been chosen for their flexibility and fast operating capacity: SR-60, SR-70, SR-95, SR-105 and especially the new SR-125 HIT are operating successfully throughout the area.◀
