n February, Potain Hup 40-30 crane was presented at international earthmoving and building machinery exhibition, SaMoTer, in Verona, Italy. Verona-based Potain dealer, Toffoli Macchine exhibited the pioneering crane, alongside the Hup 32-27 and Igo 21. The Hup models are part of a new generation of self-erecting cranes, which boast a range of innovative design and technology features. Agile, versatile, and with several configuration options, the Hup 40-30 offers a high-performance slewing radius, a 40 m jib and a maximum capacity of 4 t. The Hup 40-30 was officially launched at the Manitowoc factory in Niella Tanaro, Italy, in September 2016. Several months earlier, the Hup 32-27 was launched at bauma 2016. Just like the Hup 40-30 crane, the Hup 32-27 provides superior lifting capacity at tall heights, and is well-suited to space-restricted job sites, increasing productivity for owners. “In Italy, recovery after a slowdown in the construction industry is gradually strengthening,” said Claudio Moz-

zini, sales manager of Toffoli Macchine. “Potain cranes and particularly the new Hup models were a key attraction for visitors to our booth at this year’s SaMoTer.” The 30th edition of SaMoTer was attended by more than 450 companies from 23 countries and 110 trade delegations from 28 countries. The exhibition, which ran from 22-25 February 2017, also played host to Italian Grove cranes distributor FIMI, which presented five cranes.◀

he A8, the autobahn from Munich to Austria, is one of the primary routes taken by Germans traveling south for vacation. A notorious feature of this autobahn, also known from the traffic jam reports on the radio, is Irschenberg hill, an ascent in the foothills of the Alps that inclines the A8 up to 7% in some areas. All along this scenic route, Hälbich Dienstleistungs GmbH clears the bridge embankments – a necessary undertaking to preserve the material supporting bridges and underpasses. On behalf of the autobahn maintenance authority, Hälbich has been utilizing the latest addition to its fleet, a SENNEBOGEN 718, with great success. The machine, delivered by sales and service partner Fischer & Schweiger in October 2016, is ideal for working on embankments thanks to its

13 m telescopic boom. With a Westtech Woodcracker attached, operator Max Steinecker can securely grab and chop soft wood up to 25 cm in diameter. “Thanks to an outstanding range of around 15 m, this combination of cutter head and telescopic boom makes me superior to any other material handler”, Steinecker gushed. Even with a full load, the rugged, mobile undercarriage with 2-point outrigger system and support plate keeps the machine firmly and safely on the road.

Compact size and ease of movement thanks to road approval Another benefit of the machine, seen especially when used on the autobahn, is its compact size. With outriggers deployed, the 718 is just 3.90 m wide and 5.31 m long. The swivel radius of the re-

ar is just 2.38 m, not only saving traffic space but also making room for additional equipment and storage on site. Hälbich uses the SENNEBOGEN 718 all along the autobahn with flexibility. And the machine can make the trips from site to site itself thanks to approval for road use. A flatbed trailer is enough for transport over longer distances. Operator Max Steinecker uses the SENNEBOGEN 718 to clear bridges from above or underpass embankments from below. In either case, the Maxcab comfort cab, which can be elevated by 2.7 m, offers him an ideal overview of the work area. Especially since his coworkers are at work all around him with chainsaws, this feature is one of the most important safety factors in tree maintenance, as confirmed by Steinecker.◀

MET’s R&D team has listened to the market and has welcomed customer inputs. IMET has thus given a strong response in terms of flexibility, safety and ergonomics; in one word, the M880 solution. The new models WAVE2, ARES2, KRON, ZEUS2, THOR2, MODIN and G4, are the result of the experience gathered over years and the combination of high-level technical skills. All models present important features, like the STOP circuit, which ensures the highest level of security in accordance to European and international standards; the newly designed boxes realized with high-resistance material and capable of operating at a -25°C to 70°C working temperature range. All new radio remote controls can memorize each event that has caused a breakdown or a crash, as well as the its actual working hours.

A dedicated diagnostics tool allows you to set and check the main operating parameters and to view the list of the most significant events that have occurred, by simply interfacing it to a PC and to the remote control. All models are equipped with “AFA” (Adaptive Frequency Agility) technology. It prevents the risk of lost of communication due to interferences. The radio remote control continuously searches and selects the less impeded channel among the available ones. Another feature is the optional PIN code, which allows you to set a customizable safety pin code, so that the

he use of high-tonnage, prefabricated components and extremely large steel beams in construction is a growing trend, based on the fact that it reduces project-completion times. In construction projects involving space constraints, which are becoming increasingly common in the world’s largest cities, there is often a need to use large cranes with luffing jibs that enable them to lift extremely heavy loads while avoiding other cranes and nearby buildings.

The maximum reach of the new Linden Comansa luffing-jib crane is 65 metres (213.3 ft). The prototype in the image has been assembled with a 45-metre reach (147.6 ft).

New York, Seoul, London, Bangkok, Mexico City, Shanghai, Paris, Melbourne, Frankfurt… These are just some of the large cities where this type of tower crane is increasingly required. Linden Comansa has responded to that need with the launch of the LCL700, the largest in its range of luffing-jib tower cranes to date.

The LCL700 crane boasts an excellent ‘out-of-service’ jib radius of between 20.4 and 16 metres (66.9 52.5 ft), depending on the maximum reach.

Two versions of the LCL700 are launched on the global market, with maximum load capacities of 64 and 50 tonnes (141,090 and 110,230 lb). By means of simple manual modifications, the maximum load capacity of the cranes can be reduced to 32 and 25 tonnes respectively (70,550 and 55,120 lb), resulting in increased hoist speed and productivity. This change on the hoist system from double line to single pull line is one of the many improvements that have been implemented into this model based on recommendations from Linden Comansa clients. The maximum radius of the LCL700 is 65 metres (213.3 ft) and can be reduced in increments of 5 metres to 30 (98.4 ft). The LCL700 64t can lift a maximum load of 7.2 tonnes at maximum reach (15,870 lb), while the LCL700 50t can lift 7.5 t (16,530 lb). The minimum reach of both models is just 4 metres (13.1 ft), allowing maximum use of the space at the construction site. The LCL700 also boasts an excellent ‘outof-service’ jib radius of between 20.4 and 16 metres (66.9 - 52.5 ft), depending on the maximum reach, providing a greater level of safety on the construction site when the crane is not in use. The radius of the counter-jib is also extremely short, measuring just 9.5 metres (31.2 ft), with the potential to be reduced to 8.7 metres (28.5 ft) by assembling the crane with steel coun-

terweights rather than the standard concrete counterweights. Despite its size, the counter-jib is spaciously distributed, enabling the operator to work and perform maintenance tasks with great ease. The maximum free-standing height of the LCL700 is 69.8 metres (229.0 ft), on anchor feet. The LCL700 tower sections, with a 2.5-metre wide frame, are the same as for the luffing-jib LCL500 model and the flat-top 21LC750. This eliminates the need for owners of those models to re-invest in tower sections or the climbing cage. This new luffing jib crane from Linden Comansa boasts a 200 kW hoist motor (268 hp) that enables to reach high speeds: up to 134 metres per minute for the LCL700 64t (440 ft/min), and

170 m/min for the LCL700 50t (558 ft/ min). The hoist speed with maximum load capacity is naturally reduced, but remains extremely competitive: the LCL700 64t can lift 64 tonnes at a speed of 17 m/min (56 ft/min) or 32t at 34 m/min (112 ft/min), while the maximum speed for the 50t version is 22 m/ min (72 ft/min) when lifting 50-tonne loads and 43 m/min (141 ft/min) when lifting 25 t loads. Both models feature a high-capacity Lebus hoist cable drum, enabling them to be used to construct buildings of over 1000 metres in height (3,400 ft) when using the single pull line, and buildings of over 500 metres in height (1,600 ft) when using the double line. Of the many advantages of this new model, perhaps the most striking is its ease of assembly. The LCL700 leaves

the factory ready for quick assembly with pre-assembled luffing reevings, thus allowing on-site erectors to work faster and the assembly time to be reduced. The components can be quickly connected using bolts, the accesses are wide, comfortable and easilyassembled, and the erection weights have been optimised. The heaviest weight for a quick crane assembly would be 18.5 tonnes (40,785 lb) and can be reduced to 13 tonnes (28,660 lb) by removing some of the components pre-assembled at the factory and lifting them separately. According to Martín Echevarría, Sales Director at Linden Comansa, “the large cities in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Oceania are beginning to feel the need for high-capacity luffing-jib cranes in some of their pro-

Fair > Magni at Conexpo

Magni at Conexpo 2017

Conexpo Fair was an opportunity for us to underline our presence on American market, one relatively new market for rotating telescopic handlers, but a market that has developed and expanded to a great extent over the last few years

John Melegatti

T

he greatest innovation we launched at this fair is the brand new rotating model RTH 6.46SH. What is newest about his machine is the possibility to reach up to 46 m height, for sure the highest ever reached for a rotating telehandler, but also the possibility to have 6 ton of maximum lifting capaci-

ty is for sure an advantage that allows to handle big weights. This is for sure a very preforming machine because of the used materials and the optimization of the weights and dimension relatively to the incomparable performances. An example is the perforated boom that is lighter and improves lifting capability also on the long

reach but at the same time that can grant to operate in total safety; this model grants at its outstanding maximum height an outstanding lifting capacity of 2.5 ton. All cabin comforts and options common to all our RTH range machines will remain standard on this machine too: e.g. air conditioning/heating,

touch screen display, electric system in CAN BUS, integrated diagnostic and load sensing circuit (350 bar). During the event we got many interest and curiosity form the public and we also got very positive feedback from customers and end users as a further evidence that this type of product is certainly successful for these markets with vertical development and also has a wide field of use. These are, in fact, the most suitable models for use at urban construction sites in cities with high population density, like New York, where work spaces are often limited and working at considerable heights is inevitable. In such situations it is therefore imperative to have the possibility of using compact machinery that can perform a number of functions at the same time; VERSATILITY is, in fact, a crucial feature of our models: the characteristic of being able to change the attachment on the vehicle easily and quickly makes it possible to have a single vehicle that performs three different main functions; for example, telescopic handler when equipped with forks, aerial platform if equipped with basket, or crane if equipped with winch or with jib with winch.

Insights: RTH and HTH std features The pressurized cab designed by Magni TH, equipped with 100% filtration of the incoming air, large panoramic windscreen and FOPS/ROPS certification, is designed for the operator who has to spend many hours inside the cab and must have all the comforts to be able to work better and in safety in all conditions. To ensure optimum comfort, it is equipped with standard air conditioning and heating, adjustable seat and steering column and a simple and instinctive touch screen that replaces the traditional dashboard.

The touch screen display is certainly an additional advantage: its characteristic intuitiveness and simplicity make it suitable for use by all types of users, from experts to novices. The screen displays all the information related to the machine, from control of the cab comforts to display of the load charts. The machinery is controlled from 5 pages, each meant for a specific “topic”: ▶ one page, dedicated to control of the transmission and driving the machine, displays the information relative to the speed, type of steering and engine indicator lights; ▶ one page is entirely dedicated to the stabilizers: it displays the information related to these and the stabilization can be customized by selecting the extension for each of the stabilizers individually or for all stabilizers at the same time; ▶ a third page is dedicated to the management and settings of the work area limits: if obstacles are present in a certain area, such as a wall or a ceiling, the machine can be set so that the movement does not exceed certain limits in order to ensure operation in complete safety. It is also possible to adjust the hydraulic speed of each movement on a percentage basis from 0 to 100%; ▶ one page is dedicated to dynamic load charts: by means of the RFID system, the machine automatically recognizes the accessory installed and the software automatically uploads the load chart required for use; the load is then shown in the chart and the position is indicated in real time to always have the situation under control also from the cab; ▶ while a fifth page is entirely dedicated to the use of the cab comforts: this is used to set the air conditioning and heating, and also for switching on the work lights and safety flashing lights.

The electrical system in CAN BUS makes it possible to reduce the number of wirings and to obtain information from all electronically controlled components and convey it to the display in the cab. Built-in diagnostics allows for quick and easy troubleshooting on electrical and electronically controlled components and also helps cut machine downtimes and costs; in fact, when a fault is detected, the system automatically stops any aggravating movement and displays an alarm code that identifies the type of fault.
