The Quiet Life was established in 1997 by designer and photographer Andy Mueller. Originally an offshoot of OhioGirl Design, the Quiet Life has grown from releasing one or two t-shirt designs a year into a much larger project that releases two seasonal lines a year of t-shirts, hats, accessories, and cut+sewn garments. Mueller also works full time at Girl Skateboards as a member of the “Art Dump.” His main focus is art directing Girl’s shoe company, Lakai Limited Footwear. Mueller’s work has appeared in graphic-design annuals and design books, aired on MTV, and been published in numerous magazines. His artwork has been exhibited in the U.S., Europe, Japan, Australia, and Canada. Raised in the Midwest on a healthy diet of BMX, skateboarding, music, and magazines, Mueller currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife and kids, a cat, a bird, and a ping-pong habit.

Peter Buchanan-Smith, founder of Best Made Company, is a New York–based designer, author, and entrepreneur whose career has included art direction of the New York Times; creative direction for Paper magazine; and work for fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi, musical legends David Byrne, Brian Eno, and Philip Glass, and the band Wilco. He is the author of several books, including The Wilco Book, and he has collaborated on many others, including Strunk and White’s classic The Elements of Style with illustrator Maira Kalman. His first tome, Speck: A Curious Collection of Uncommon Things, explores the fascinating lives of ordinary people and commonplace objects. This connection between people and objects is also at the heart of Buchanan-Smith’s most recent venture, Best Made Company, a purveyor of finely crafted tools and an entrée into the symbolic world they conjure.

VARIOUS PROJECTS —Scion Presents

NEW YORK CIT Y

Elizabeth Beer and Brian Janusiak formed Various Projects as a multidisciplinary design collaboration in 2005. The retail arm, Project No. 8, launched three locations in New York City: a women’s store (Project No. 8, opened in 2006), a men’s store (No. 8b, opened in 2009), and a store at the Ace Hotel (No. 8a) that focuses on design, travel, and a reinterpretation of the "hotel shop." The pair's concept is to create spaces that can be outlets for their own products as well as showcases for work by designers and artists that might be outside of their main occupation. Having a retail space allows Various Projects to experiment with themes that occur in their own work: distribution, collaboration, digression, and the creation of fluctuating communities.

BOOJI —Scion Presents

Booji is an independent footwear and accessories line that produces innovative shoes using animal-friendly materials and responsible green products that reduce the company’s carbon footprint. Created by Miss MDot after looking over a world of infinite sneakers and realizing there weren’t a lot of kicks that ladies could relate to, Booji produces sneaker classics with a twist. Her constant craving for something different and her “think outside the (shoe)box” design aesthetic led her to step out in a pair of her own Booji sneakers. Today, the Booji style is wearable by both men and women. Though Booji is rooted in the Cali lifestyle, the concept arose on a summer day on a train from Frankfurt to Berlin. Miss MDot took these initial concepts and mashed them up with influences from her daily life and travels. The end result is footwear to complement a look or to wear as a tried-and-true staple.

BEN BLANC STUDIO —Scion Presents

PROVIDENCE

Ben Blanc is an American artist and designer engaged in the ongoing conversation between the work of fine art and design. In his current series, Blanc uses steel, lines, and geometric forms to translate ideas into physical space, creating complex structures that exist to challenge concepts of two-dimensional and three-dimensional space. Moments are flattened, while space is expanded and transformed. What result are works that demand a visual engagement that employs the viewer's own physical presence. Blanc’s works have been exhibited at Salone Internazionale de Mobile in Milan, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York, the Wood Turning Center in Philadelphia, Edith Gallery in Köln, Germany, the Ohio Museum of Craft, and Max Lang and CITE galleries in New York. Most recently Blanc debuted new work in his first solo exhibition at the Louis project space in Boston, Massachusetts. His works have been featured in numerous design publications including the New York Times, Dwell, and Metropolitan Home. In addition to his studio work, Blanc is a visiting faculty member and critic at the Rhode Island School of Design.
