Our Faculty

“I was drawn to SCIS because of the opportunity to experience international teaching in a environment that has supportive colleagues and administration. At SCIS the small class sizes and access to technology and resources make it a comfortable place to educate and grow as a teacher. ” – Megan Laird, Lower School teacher of SCIS Pudong

Our teachers are experienced and dedicated educators from around the English-speaking world. The majority of our teachers have been hired from overseas and some have been recruited locally from the Shanghai expatriate community.

Laptop Program (Grades 6-12)

SCIS-HIS is a Macintosh campus and has a 1-to-1 ratio of computers to students, and every student starting in middle school is issued their own MacBook Pro. Due to this, multiple times throughout the year educational sessions are held for students and parents alike to help everyone gain familiarity with their computers. For students, basics of the mac are explained as well as advanced uses. For parents, computers and the internet increasingly provide powerful tools to monitor, support, and participate in their child’s academic life. Past topics covered in Meet Your Mac Sessions: • Understanding Powerschool (electronic grading system) • How to Monitor Your Son/Daughter’s Progress Online • How to Use Your E-portfolio • Finding Teacher’s websites • Communication Methods. Also resources available for parental controls to help students manage the lure of the internet and computer gaming.

LIFE

We are most proud of the community culture that encourages students to participate in a variety of activities. Here, the Renaissance ideal of being fluent across many disciplines from academics to athletics to art is the norm, not the exception. These diverse activities provide outlets for our passions, and they help bring together our community and even make us smarter. They help us connect and keep us balanced. It is not unusual to see the star striker on the soccer team playing a role in one of the big semester musical productions. Conversely, don’t be surprised to see the violin virtuoso from the fall concert running up down the basketball court in the winter.

“Personally, I believe that it is just as important to be involved in sports and creative activities as it is to be a good student. It’s also a great way to make friends with people you have common interests with.” – Richie Ferranti, Alumni, Class of 2014

Performing Arts

Our experienced music teachers offer students a rich music program, which seeks to foster in students an appreciation of musical concepts and traditions. The music curriculum uses the truly international cultural diversity of the school as a springboard for studying different musical styles and forms. The drama program offers students a range of opportunities to perform on or off stage, in formal settings and less formal circumstances. The culmination of the drama experience for most students is the end of semester/year drama productions in the auditorium.

650 – 675 seat performing art theaters “We know that giving students the opportunity to perform with their peers gives them the courage to speak with diction, express themselves in various ways, explore new ideas, and work together with their friends to create something spectacular. - Jessica Dearing, HIS Kindergarten Teacher

Mandarin Program Due to the wide variety language backgrounds of our students, we are proud to offer a fully leveled Mandarin program at all grades. Your child has never heard Mandarin before nevertheless studied it? No problem—we have a beginner class that will suit him perfectly. Your child was raised speaking Chinese at home and is fluent? That’s great—our advanced class will help her with her academic Chinese and writing. And if your child is somewhere in between, we’re confident one of our intermediate classes will be a good fit.

A World Language is a requirement of all of our students?

Our ECE and Lower School children (ages 2-10) have dedicated time set aside every day for World Languages, with most spending that time in Mandarin. And at the Middle School and High School (ages 11-18) a second language is required in the curriculum, with most choosing Mandarin.

ESOL SUPPORT English for Speakers of Other Languages

SCIS-HIS was the first English school in Shanghai that opened its doors to non-English speakers. 18 years later, that rich tradition continues. Now, both specific ESOL classes and ESOL support for regular classes are available depending on students’ individual English language acquisition needs at a beginning, intermediate, and advanced level. Our ESOL teachers are experts at helping students learn and improve English. Even for students who have never been exposed to English before, they will be speaking fluently within six months. How? Combine the specialized teacher support helping them to speak English in the classroom with their peers and the truly international social environment requiring them to speak English out of the classroom with their friends, and the result is a full English immersion environment that generates amazing results. Remember, in the 21st century, there is no more important language skill than English.

Community Service Throughout the year, our students will participate in activities that develop this sense of service and a mindfulness to take action in helping the elderly, children, people in poverty, and endangered animals. It is our intention that students will develop a positive attitude toward the life and culture of others, become a contributing force in the life of the school, and improve their ability to bring differing people together into a sense of community.

“The Chinese have a saying, ‘Helping others is the foundation of happiness.’ It’s true! When you do good things you feel good about yourself.” - Nikki Kobrick, Grade 5, Hongqiao Lower School

Beyond Graduation The SCIS-HIS Alumni Association has been established in order to foster the continued cordial relations of the SCIS-HIS community. The Alumni Association seeks to generate and maintain the active interest of all SCIS-HIS alumni in its regular business. It will provide the alumni with regular opportunities to assemble and maintain valued relationships through official annual reunions in Shanghai, a global alumni tour, social media connections, alumni interviews and “class notes” in the Communitas magazine. Alumni Requirements: Graduated from a SCIS-HIS School or went to school here for at least one year AND be over 18.

“SCIS helped me a lot to grow up as an individual and as a person. SCIS, just like its name, is a community and everyone is willing to help. Unlike most Korean students, I decided to go to the States for university. Since I decided where I wanted to go late in the college process, my college counsellor, Mr Katz helped a lot in narrowing down the universities. He explained to me the characteristics of each school and helped me tremendously with my interviews. Overall, it was a great experience to have four years at SCIS.”

– Ye Li Park, Class of 2013

“When I first set foot in Washington, DC to begin my freshman year at Georgetown University, I arrived with the writing, analysis and critical-thinking skills needed to succeed at the university level. SCIS played a key role in helping me to develop these abilities. Spending several years within SCIS’s small-school environment allowed me to receive personalized instruction from my teachers that proved critical in preparing me for life after high school. Getting to spend six years immersed in SCIS’s international student body in one of the most vibrant cities in Asia was just icing on the cake.”

– Sam Kane, Class of 2010 Attended SCIS for 6 years and is currently working as a senior Research Associate at Zeichner Risk Analytics

“SCIS-HIS provides ‘Luggage for Life,’ giving students a suitcase full of skills to be successful in life. These skills include how to work with others, how to be a good citizen, how to be passionate about learning new things, how to be confident in their opinions, how to articulate their opinions, how to think rationally, how to solve problems, how to be active physically, and how to develop a healthy lifestyle.”– An SCIS parent at a Community Meeting.

For The Parents About P.A.F.A. Introduction

SCIS and HIS are fortunate to have a parent organization called the Parents and Friends Association. (PAFA) Founded in May of 1996, PAFA coordinates parent involvement with the school. SCIS and HIS parents are by definition members of this organization. Other adults with an interest may also join. PAFA conducts various activities, from community events to charity fundraisers to volunteer support for teachers and students. Each campus has a PAFA board who work closely with the building administrators to plan events that help to make our schools a unique experience for families, faculty, and students alike. PAFA serves as a way parents can communicate ideas for the betterment of the school to the administration and Board. SCIS and HIS are proud of the high level of parent participation in our schools and value our partnership with the parent community.

College Counseling

College Acceptances THE AMERICAS

SCIS and HIS college counseling office assist students through the college admissions process. Our College Counselors work closely with faculty advisors and administrators as they help students choose appropriately challenging classes. The college counseling offices use the resource Naviance as a main online college and career organizational and guidance tool to help students with the application process. They routinely bring in a range of university admissions heads from around the world to campus events and fairs. The counselors work with the Heads of School to ensure that the SAT is available on site all six times every year and that the ACT is available twice per year.

What Students Want You To Know Doing the IB program at SCIS not only allowed me to enter college at a much higher academic level than my peers, but I also received a significant amount of college credit for doing well on the diploma. I feel so lucky to have come from a diverse international background and definitely miss attending SCIS and being so close with teachers and friends.” – Joey Gribble, Class 2013. Studying at UC Davis “The biggest difference in coming from a truly international school is definitely the readiness for diversity and the unknown. Of course, you acquire new and varied knowledge in any school, but a truly international school takes that a step further. Even outside of the classroom, you are always exposed to different cultures or different ways of thinking. That ‘conditions’ you to consider different perspective and accept them.” – Anias Gallet, Class of 2013. Attending University of Bristol, England “Before school had even started, I’d already made friends and was invited to volleyball practice. I’ve been involved in many different kinds of clubs and events, had the chance to lead and to explore things I might have never attempted in a different school. Each has added to who I am today, and made my high school experience that more memorable.” – Maaike Spiekerman, Class of 2012, HIS

“We live in a diverse world, in a diverse city, in a diverse country, and send our children to a diverse school. Often, those of us who are only here temporarily yearn for home and a return to ‘our culture,’ but remember that there is no greater gift to your family than offering them the experiences afforded to them here. Relish it whenever you can!” – Xerxes Billy Kruger, Middle School Social Studies Teacher. SCIS-Hongqiao.

“I am certain we can all agree that this community has positively shaped us in some way or another. The key word being: community. So how important is a community? Well, it’s kind of in the school name. That aside, a closely-knit school offering a plethora of interests to pursue, has moulded so many students here to become all-rounded individuals, sparking adventure, curiosity, thirst for knowledge, and friendliness. ” – Andre Ong, Alumni, Class of 2014, SCIS-Hongqiao

“True international understanding is, in my eyes, when you realize that you have more in common than you are different and that you can use the differences among your friends and their cultures to work together in order to excel on projects that you would have other wise, struggled with. ” – Caroline Lohbeck, Alumni, Class of 2014, SCIS-Pudong “My experience at SCIS has been filled with changes, whether they were in the verbal sense or otherwise, for it would be an understatement to say that SCIS, as a community, and as a school, hasn’t transformed its views, its values, and its people.” – Kevin Masson, Alumni, Class of 2012, SCIS-Hongqiao “Although there are still many uncertainties, the one definite reality is that we are all brilliant; brilliant because we accept each other, and I could not have learned the art of acceptance anywhere better than right here at Hangzhou International School. ” – Yu-Tin, “Cherry” Hsiao, Alumni, Class of 2014, HIS “HIS is not only a place for us to gain knowledge, but it has also provided us as a community to grow and to learn a vast amount lessons that can never be taught through books. This school has endowed me with knowledge that helped build my interest and my path towards my dreams.” – Raelene Chia, Class of 2012. Attending University College London, UK “Hangzhou International School has affected me by opening my mind to different cultures and people, giving me a world wide perspective. ” – Yu-Tin “Cherry” Hsiao, Alumni, Class of 2014, HIS “SCIS has always been a tight-knit community for me. What I enjoy the most is working closely with all the teams and organisations I’m involved in.” – Julia Zhu, Alumni, Class of 2011, SCIS-Pudong 55
