SHANGHAI COMMUNITY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL & HANGZHOU INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
WELCOME There has always been something extraordinary at the heart of our schools: Shanghai Community International School (SCIS) and Hangzhou International School (HIS) – something that explains the happiness and high achievements of our students, the success of our graduates, and the reputation of our schools as the top choice for a truly international education in China. It is this: at the core of our schools, there are powerful, complementary energies - the forces of tradition, rigor, and preparedness, balanced by the forces of culture, warmth, and diversity. Together these energies create a dynamic, constantly evolving school sustained by an unchanging philosophy and sense of purpose. They create a rare environment, which envelops all of our students, allowing them to feel greatly cared for while they are challenged intensely, and to move forward with enthusiasm and joy toward lives of meaning and accomplishment.

RIGOR
t SCIS-HIS we provide our students with a rigorous learning opportunities. The goal is to help students develop the capacity to understand content that is complex, ambiguous, provocative, and personally or emotionally challenging. Greater capacity leads to learning opportunities of greater sophistication.
D
TRADITIONS
oing something the SCIS or HIS ‘way’ is an expression heard in our community that incorporates so much of what has always been distinctive about our program. Academically, it means learning the fundamentals of education in a thorough, rigorous manner within a creative learning environment. It refers to the expectations of teachers, the specific way subjects and lessons are introduced, the formalities of composition writing, the way math facts are learned, and the history lessons discussed.
S
PREPARED
CIS-HIS learning focuses on our Essential School-wide Learning Results (ESLRs). They identify what we want all our students to “know” (content) and be able to “do” (skills) and are incorporated into every lesson in each subject area. As a result, SCISHIS students will demonstrate: Effective Communication Skills (receptive and expressive skills); High Level Thinking (creative and critical thinking skills); A Solid Foundation of Knowledge (mastery of basic skills in all academic areas); Positive Learning Attitudes and Behaviors (academic and personal goal setting skills, teamwork, and quality production skills); as well as Global and Community Appreciation (interpersonal skills, social responsibility, care for people and the environment).
W
CULTURE
e believe in creating and promoting respect for the diverse cultures that are a part of our community. At our schools, we take great effort in creating a deeper understanding of our host country’s culture and tradition. Our Mandarin program is a combination of both language and cultural content. Students experience the richness of Chinese celebrations and culture, while learning functional and conversational Mandarin.
“I spent 6 years in SCIS and they were the best years I could have ever asked for.” – Jerry Ku, Alumni, Class of 2006, SCIS-Pudong

OPPORTUNITY
pportunity is not just a word we use to describe the learning experiences in our schools. Opportunity is a cornerstone for learning in which students are encouraged to challenge themselves not only academically, but also through extracurricular activities and clubs. Whether it is helping to build a home in a remote village, competing at an international swim meet or participating in our school’s own marching band, opportunities for students to take part in something special are evident everywhere you look. As internationally minded individuals, SCIS-HIS students graduate with a multitude of accomplishments and a strong sense of self-worth due to the opportunities awarded them while attending our schools.
I
COMMUNITY
n the context of SCIS-HIS, in which there is a diverse student body, difference provide students and teachers with opportunities to explore a variety of ways of being and knowing. In this way, everyone is given the opportunity to learn and grow as members of not only our school community, but as members of the greater global community.
S
DIVERSITY
CIS-HIS strives to be a diverse community that articulates, affirms, and values people’s differences. The multiplicity of backgrounds and perspectives within our community reflect the entire world, thus we feel empowered to prepare our students for life and leadership in school and beyond. Diversity fosters our strength as a school and our growth as a community. Having and respecting this diversity fuels inquiry and exploration and ensures that collectively, we learn more and arrive at a greater understanding.
“I have been at SCIS for almost 7 years now and many things have changed; buildings, soccer field, the addition of the swimming pool and the theater. But one thing here will always stay the same - the bright smiles on not just the students, but also the teachers.” – Rajdeep Rana, Grade 5, SCIS-Hongqiao

LOWER SCHOOL Creating lifelong learners
A
t SCIS-HIS, Lower School students learn all the basics – reading and writing, math and science, social studies and spelling, but it is the spirit of the schools that make it such a special place. The intangibles are what set our program apart and inspire our students, parents, and faculty. The spirit resides in the special relationships students form with their teachers, in the unique approach our educators take to basic materials and bring to each classroom, and in the special programs that involve families and the community. From the art room to the theater where creativity can be limitless, to hands-on science experiments that have students clamoring to be novice scientists, we offer an educational environment that stimulates each student’s creative and academic interests, encouraging an early love of learning. Based on the best standards and practices used around the world, our curriculum meets the wide range of learning needs and backgrounds of international students. The balance in our curriculum between academics and the arts, technological and experiential, fun and challenging, exposes each curious child to the endless possibilities for lifelong learning.
“The SCIS Lower School takes into consideration the whole child. There is a nice balance between academic demands and creative opportunities, along with social and extracurricular activities. A well-rounded individual is developed that is ready to take on the more complex demands he or she will encounter in middle school.”– parent, SCIS-Hongqiao

UPPER SCHOOL
Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders
S
CIS-HIS Upper Schools build beyond the basics provided in the Lower Schools. We offer a comprehensive English language curriculum focused on literature, including critical, analytical and creative thinking and writing skills. Modern Language courses are required and choices include Spanish, French, and Mandarin. Athletic and physical education have a central role in the lives of our students, building character, teamwork, and good sportsmanship. An advisory program is an integral part of every student’s academic and personal life on campus. A variety of clubs provide opportunities for students to participate and enjoy a range of activities from fine arts to athletics and academic competitions. The atmosphere of the Upper School is different and distinct from the Lower Schools and is intended to develop a sense of growing independence and emergence of self so critical to this age group. International and community awareness is promoted through Creativity Activity Service (CAS) and unique opportunities to travel throughout China on annual trips of learning and discovery. SCIS-HIS prepares graduates to embrace the challenges awaiting them with confidence and fosters a love of learning and a growing sense of themselves and their place in the world. • Athletic teams successfully compete in the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS), Shanghai International Schools Athletics Conference (SISAC), China International Schools Sports Association (CISSA) conferences and Shanghai Swim League (SSL) • One-to-one Laptop program provides students with a Macbook for use throughout the academic program to access and process information from anywhere on campus • Extensive clubs and organizations that extend the learning outside of the classroom such as Model United Nations, Student Council, dance teams, the Hongqiao Marching Band, and much more
• State-of-the-art science labs, sports facilities and fine arts spaces • Authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) programs • Graduates go on to study at top Universities around the world
“My experience at SCIS has been filled with changes, whether they were in the verbal sense or otherwise, for it would be an understatement to say that SCIS, as a community, and as a school, hasn’t transformed its views, its values, and its people.” – Kevin Masson, Alumni, Class of 2012, SCIS-Hongqiao

PUDONG CAMPUSES T
here are 2 campuses in Pudong conveniently located in the Kangqiao area: a Lower School campus for our nursery program through to Grade 5 and an Upper School campus for Grade 6 through 12. We are just 25 minutes from the Pudong Airport and only 20 minutes from the Jinqiao area. The Lower School was purpose-built and is adjacent to the Emerald housing compound in Kangqiao, making it very convenient and a truly ‘walkable campus’ for many families. With a gymnasium, library, multi-purpose room, soccer pitch, and a Kompan playground system, the campus utilizes space to support the needs of elementary students as they learn, explore and play. Conveniently situated on the same campus, the Early Childhood Center (ECC) was designed specifically for ages 2 to 3. Children will find learning centers and areas for imaginative play, quiet time, group time, manipulative activities, and cooperative play. Outside they’ll explore a play area designed specifically for their physical and developmental needs. The Upper School, just minutes away, features a large athletic field on the interior side, a large partial basement with high ceilings that includes a black box theater, a 25-meter swimming pool, and specialty rooms such as a fitness center, squash court, video editing room, and dance/performance studios. This is not to mention the spacious classrooms, gymnasium, art lab, exhibition area, science labs, well equipped library, and open cafeteria. As of January 2012, another wonderful addition to our state-of-the-art facilities is our brand new 675-seat performing arts theater. The two campuses service a diverse population of expatriate students living in Shanghai. Our individualized approach through learning continuums makes us a good choice for families from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. SCIS Pudong’s overseas hired teaching faculty and local Mandarin teachers are certified professionals and come with vast amounts of experience and the dedication to give careful and continuous attention to each child. Small class sizes and unique attention to learning styles make us a highly competitive choice amongst top tier Shanghai schools.
“What makes us so unique? All of us. Students and teachers shift among the roles of expert, researcher, learner, and teacher, nurturing and supporting themselves and each other so all can meet the challenges ahead.” – Jane Macmillan, Lower School Principal, SCIS-Pudong
