Auxiliary Installs New Officers The annual Auxiliary Christmas luncheon was held on Tuesday, Dec. 12th. The special event is a time to thank the volunteers for their efforts and gifts to the hospital. Every other year the celebration includes a special ceremony to officially install the upcoming Auxiliary Board members. The following volunteers will hold office for the 2018/2019 term: Jo Ann Baker, President; Rose Anstine, Past President; Judy Day-Trenary, Recording Secretary; Rose Anstine, General Treasurer; Jan Bartel, Gift Shop Treasurer; Dee Dee Moore, In-Hospital Services/Membership. The luncheon concluded with a donation from the Auxiliary to the hospital for the purchase of specific equipment items. “Recently we were given a wish list from the hospital and the Auxiliary has voted to donate these items: a carpet shampooer for the housekeeping department, a wheelchair for ER, a centrifuge for the lab, and a kangaroo pump for Med/Surg,” said Rose Anstine, out-going Auxiliary President. A check for $3,792.00 was presented to hospital Chief Financial Officer, Holly Harper, for the equipment purchases. “On behalf of the hospital I want to say thank you. The departments were elated, it means a lot to all of us. I really appreciate you, and am so grateful for everything you have done for us,” Harper said. Integrity Healthcare Professionals Lifesaver of the Month Congratulations to Nicky Terrill for being named the Integrity Healthcare Professionals Lifesaver of the Month. Nicky was nominated for donating a kidney to her father, Mervin Bruce. Mr. Bruce has Polycystic Kidney Disease, and was getting close to needing dialysis. Once Nicky found out she was a match, she immediately began the process of testing to make sure that donating her kidney would be safe for both her father and herself. After testing was complete, the surgeries were scheduled at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City. The surgeries went well and her kidney started functioning for her dad right away. Nicky is on the road to recovery, and is getting stronger each day. There was never a doubt in her mind that she would do this for her father. Nicky has been a Laboratory Aide with South Central Kansas Medical Center since 2015. She currently works full-time in the hospital’s Laboratory. Great job Nicky!

SCKMC Recognizes Rep. Judd-Jenkins A special event has held at SCKMC last week to formally thank Representative Anita Judd-Jenkins for her unwavering support of health care issues during the 2017 Kansas legislative session. “We want Representative JuddJenkins to know how much we, as health care providers, appreciate her support,” said Virgil Watson, SCKMC’s Chief Executive Officer. Representative Judd-Jenkins voted in support of every high priority, health care issue addressed during the 2017 Kansas legislative session. Such legislative issues included KanCare reform and expansion, reversal of the 2016 Medicaid provider cuts, and the conceal carry exemption for public hospitals. “As leaders and partners in healthcare, we appreciate Representative Judd-Jenkins and the support she has given to healthcare in Kansas and in our community,” proclaimed SCKMC Board Chair Carol Hearne. Hearne presented Representative Judd-Jenkins with a certificate of appreciation from the Kansas Hospital Association. Upon receipt of the award, Representative JuddJenkins reinforced her support of rural healthcare. “Rural hospitals, to me, are one of the most important issues we have in the State of Kansas. I also am very concerned about our aging population in rural Kansas, and therefore the accessibility we must provide for our citizens. I will continuously work on this issue as it is personally important to me. I thank you for this honor, and I will continue to work for you,” Representative Judd-Jenkins said.

The Pharm Forum with Homer Mah, D.Ph. Many people don't realize that "drugged driving" is just as dangerous as drunk driving. We know to warn patients about the usual meds that generally cause drowsiness and impaired driving. However, people sometimes can get into trouble with first generation antihistamines (i.e. Benadryl). You may not feel drowsy after taking this med but your driving may be impaired. The stop smoking medication Chantix may also cause impaired driving. If there is a dose change for a potentially impairing med, make sure you know how you react to medication before driving. Also avoid consuming alcohol while taking these type of medications.
