Prepare for Spring Weather

McDonald Named Lifesaver of the Month

Spring is the time of year when many things change, including the weather. Because spring weather is so unpredictable, you may be unprepared when severe weather hits. Being caught off guard by a spring storm increases the risk of injury and death. When spring arrives, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and floods are real possibilities. Now is the time to take the surprise factor out of severe weather and prepare yourself, your family, and your home. Advance planning for thunderstorms, lightning, tornadoes, and floods requires specific safety precautions. Prepare your family members for the possibility of severe weather. Tell them where to seek appropriate shelter as soon as they are aware of an approaching storm. Practice your emergency plan for every type of severe weather. Show family members where the emergency supplies are stored, and make sure they know how to turn off the water, gas, and electricity in your home. Keep an emergency kit on hand. Some items to include: • A battery-operated flashlight, a battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio, and extra batteries for both • An emergency evacuation or shelter plan, including a map of your home and, for every type of severe weather emergency, routes to safety from each room • A list of important personal information, including: telephone numbers of neighbors, family, and friends insurance and property information, telephone numbers of utility companies, and medical information • A customized first aid kit to meet your individual and family needs, including basic items such as non-latex gloves, an assortment of adhesive bandages, antibiotic ointment, sterile gauze pads in assorted sizes, absorbent compress dressings, tweezers, scissors, adhesive cloth tape, aspirin packets (81 mg each), first aid instruction booklet • A 3–5 day supply of bottled water and nonperishable food • Personal hygiene items • Blankets or sleeping bags Often by the time we are aware of an approaching storm, we have little if any time to prepare for it. However, with some advance planning, you’ll be ready if thunderstorms, tornadoes, and floods do occur. For more information on this topic visit www.cdc.gov.

Congratulations to Mike McDonald for being named the Integrity Healthcare Professionals Lifesaver of the Month. Mike was nominated for the care of an elderly male in December. The patient's wife was impressed with how quickly Mike acted upon the patient's critical condition. Mike suspected Sepsis (the body's overwhelming and life-threatening response to infection that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death.) The wife stated that the patient had been under multiple doctors' care, and in and out of multiple facilities since Fall and said that she felt SCKMC was the first time they received good care. With Mike's skills, knowledge and quick response, he was able to get the patient the proper care he needed. The patient's wife said "Mike saved my husband's life". Mike McDonald graduated from Wichita State University with a Master's of Physician Assistant studies in 2013. He spent 1.5 years practicing endocrinology part time with emphasis in diabetes management, and has worked at Level 1 Trauma Center for 3 years. Mike joined Integrity Healthcare Associates and began full time work at the South Central Kansas Medical Center ER in 2016.

The Pharm Forum with Homer Mah, D.Ph. To help protect against identity theft and fraud, all Medicare patients will receive new cards and ID numbers. The colors of the card will not change, they will still be red, white, and blue. However, instead of a social security number, they will use an unique, random, elevencharacter ID number called Medicare Beneficiary Identifier. New cards will arrive by mail between April 2018 and April 2019. Keep this new Medicare ID confidential, and destroy your old card when the new one arrives.
