He has served a total of 14 years, during which his roles included Board Chairman, Board Secretary, Board Liaison to the Hospital Construction Committee, as well as member of several subcommittees. However his biggest impact on the facility may have been in 2010 when he assumed the duties of CEO prior to the arrival of current CEO Steve Perkins. Free Health Seminar for Treatment of Acid Reflux Disease / GERD A new procedure for the treatment of chronic acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is now available from SCKMC. Dr. Tyson Blatchford is the first specialist in the area trained on the procedure named Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication or TIF. Only a handful of hospitals in the State are providing the incisionless surgery which uses an innovative device called EsophyX® . EsophyX is “surgery from within” performed transorally (through the mouth). The EsophyX TIF procedure reduces hiatal hernia and creates a valve between the stomach and esophagus to prevent gastroesophageal reflux. Because the procedure is incisionless, there is reduced pain, reduced recovery and no visible scar. The EsophyX TIF procedure is being considered the next step in the evolution of surgery. The transition from open surgery to laparoscopy has been regarded as the major advance in surgery in the last two decades. Laparoscopy reduced the skin incisions typical of “open” surgery to only three to five “port” holes. However, laparoscopy still involves the same internal incisions and organ dissection as open surgery. EsophyX is considered to be a further advancement, avoiding incisions and dissection altogether. One advantage of this reduced invasiveness is that the procedure allows for earlier intervention for the millions of Americans diagnosed with GERD, when compared to traditional treatment options. “Recent studies have shown that the procedure can reduce patients’ dependency on medications with 70% of patients remaining symptom free after two years and experiencing a dramatic improvement in their quality of life,” said Dr. Blatchford. “After this procedure, most patients can eat and drink foods they avoided for many years. Reflux no longer impacts their life like it previously did,” he added. Dr. Blatchford will be presenting an educational health seminar about GERD and the EsophyX procedure on Wednesday, April 17th at 6:30 p.m. at the medical center. There is no charge to attend and the event is open to the public. However, seating is limited. Call 620-441-5796 to RSVP.
