SCKMC Celebrates Recognition Weeks

Staff Honored at Service Luncheon

May hosts two of the nation’s largest healthcare recognition weeks, National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week. SCKMC held events for both of these special occasions. “The people of America’s hospitals are working, caring and performing medical miracles 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. (The celebration) offers a great opportunity for us to honor the men and women whose mission and focus during this time of great change remains the same, caring for and providing top quality care for the patients, families and communities they serve,” Rich Umbdenstock, President & CEO of the American Hospital Association. National Nurses Week has been celebrated since 1954, although it was not officially recognized until President Richard Nixon issued a proclamation in 1974. Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale's birthday. To celebrate, SCKMC held a dinner for nursing staff complete with games and prizes. National Hospital Week is considered to be the nation’s largest healthcare event. The annual celebration dates back to 1921 when it was suggested by a magazine editor who hoped a community wide celebration would alleviate public fears about hospitals. The celebration, launched in Chicago, succeeded in promoting trust and goodwill among members of the public and eventually spread to become a national event. This year’s National Hospital Week celebration is being held from May 11 – 17. SCKMC has scheduled a full slate of activities for both the staff and the community in order to celebrate the efforts of the hospital team and the care they provide the community. One such event was the hospital “Services Fair” held on Thursday. The fair included multiple health related activities, informational booths, a free hot dog lunch, and discounted laboratory screenings sponsored by the Legacy Foundation. Steve Perkins, SCKMC’s CEO, believes the Services Fair is an important part of National Hospital Week, celebrating the partnership the community has with the hospital. "This is the community's hospital. Without our community we would not exist. A community must believe in its hospital, and a hospital must believe in its community by building programs that meet the community need. We are dependent on each other, and we look forward to growing together in the future,” Perkins said.

One of the main National Hospital Week activities held each year at the medical center is the “Years of Service Recognition Luncheon.” This invitation only event is held for the special individuals who have provided dedicated service in their field. Honorees are presented with achievement pins commemorating the number years they have been employed at the medical center. “Our team members are the lifeblood of this organization and all are greatly valued,” said Steve Perkins, SCKMC’s Chief Executive Officer. "SCKMC is extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated and supportive staff. That commitment is reflected in those who are celebrating milestone anniversaries.” The 2014 years of service recipients included: 5 year pins – Tracy Austin, Jane Campbell, Maricela Fuentes, Terri Galindo, Larry Langhorst, Patricia McMains, Paula Rhodes, Darci Sampson. 10 year pins – Kathy Avery, Tammy Lynn, Bonnie Schieber, Anita Sefers, Tracy Tapia, Mary Trillo 15 year pin – Shelby Koller, Cheryl Pack 20 year pin – Glenda Brantley, Crystal Johns Pictured: (left) Tracy Austin and Glenda Brantley.
