OB-GYN Brings Rare Qualifications

SCKMC Celebrates Lab Week

Administrators at SCKMC knew they had partnered with someone special when Dr. Perry Lin was hired as Ark City’s first full-time obstetrics and gynecological care specialist. However, even they did not realize how elite his training and experience had been. Through his 19 years of practice Dr. Lin estimates he has delivered close to 2,000 babies, many considered to be “high risk” pregnancies. In addition to standard OB-GYN care, Dr. Lin also has a subspecialty in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. “Reproductive endocrinologists are best known for running ‘test tube baby’ or IVF centers, but that is only a small part for which we are trained to do. My subspecialty provided me with extra training in laparoscopic surgery, plus I gained extensive experience in managing infertility issues and in women’s endocrinology,” Dr. Lin said. The subspecialty of reproductive endocrinology and infertility required two additional years of training beyond the standard eight to nine years normally spent in medical school and residency programs. The additional training qualifies Dr. Lin to act as a consultant to other OB-GYN physicians regarding reproductive endocrinology and infertility issues. Following his subspecialty training, Dr. Lin achieved board certification by successfully passing an extensive set of written and oral exams, and is recognized as a fellow of the American college of Surgeons and of the American College of OB/GYN. “The overall process is extremely demanding, and there are less than one-thousand active American Board certified subspecialists in reproductive endocrinology and infertility in the world. I am very privileged to be one of them,” Dr. Lin said. Board certification ensures the minimal criteria of competence for the physician to function as a specialist. Dr. Lin provides a full range of obstetrical and gynecological services, including consultations to assist with issues related to infertility. He is now accepting new patients to be seen through the medical center’s specialty clinic, and also delivers newborns and performs women’s health related surgeries through the hospital. Appointments may be made for his clinic by calling the SCKMC specialty clinic at 441- 5711. Referrals are not required for most insurance, but may vary depending on individual plans. Dr. Lin will also work with area physicians to accept referrals of patients needing specialized care.

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week was held April 20–26. The annual celebration recognizes the laboratory professionals and pathologists who play a vital role in every aspect of health care. Since they often work behind the scenes, few people know about the critical testing they perform every day. Lab Week is a time to honor the more than 300,000 medical laboratory professionals around the country who perform and interpret more than 10 billion laboratory tests in the US every year. The Pharm Forum with Homer Mah, D.Ph. The popular weight loss over-thecounter product Alli has been voluntarily recalled by its producer GlaxoSmithKline Healthcare. It has been reported that in seven states drugs other than Alli have been discovered inside an Alli labeled bottle. Also, consumers have reported bottles with missing labels and non-authentic tamper evident seals. The FDA recommends not to purchase any Alli products at this time. If any products were purchased in the past, double check that all capsules inside the bottle are authentic. Capsules should appear turquoise blue with a dark blue band imprinted with “60 Orlistat.” Any concerns should be addressed to GlaxoSmithKline at 1-800-671-2554. No reports of adverse effects related to the tampering have been reported to the FDA. If consumers believe they have ingested a tablet/capsule other than Alli, they should contact their health care provider.
