Patient Education a Priority for OB/GYN
SCKMC to Form New Clinic with Merger
Dr. Perry Lin, SCKMC’s obstetrics and gynecological physician specialist believes in making patient education a top priority for everyone who sees him. Lin uses the education process to form a partnership with his patients, particularly when dealing with the obstetrical side of his practice. “My role in managing pregnancy and delivery is to counsel and educate the patient in every medical recommendation provided and decision made, with ultimate goal of cooperating with the patient to ensure a healthy mother and baby at the end of pregnancy,” Dr. Lin said. While Dr. Lin specializes in women’s health, he states that patient education should be a key component of any physician visit. “Ask your physician as much as possible about your condition, status, recommendation and anything else that comes to your mind. It is the physicians’ obligation to educate and explain all recommendations,” Dr. Lin said. One of the most common questions Dr. Lin is asked relates to the appropriate age for women to begin visiting an OB/GYN. According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists an initial gynecologic visit should occur between the ages of 13 years and 15 years. Visits for younger women typically consist of a general physical exam, and an external genital exam. As a woman ages additional testing will be required such as pelvis exams and Pap tests. “The current recommendation is that if there are no specific risks, problems or symptoms, a young woman should have her first routine Pap smear and pelvic exam starting at age 21,” Dr. Lin said. Lin stresses that more frequent exams are essential if a woman has unusual symptoms, particularly if the symptoms have lasted for several months. “Most gynecologic disorders could present as bleeding or pain and are largely indistinguishable without medical evaluation,” Dr. Lin said. Dr. Lin enjoys sharing his medical insight with all those that are interested. He is willing to speak at area meetings or organizations geared toward women. “I am readily reachable and available to anyone and everyone who wish to access my knowledge and opinion on any subject within my specialty and subspecialty.” Appointments may be made for Dr. Lin’s clinic by calling the SCKMC specialty clinic at 441- 5711.
SCKMC announced today that Summit Clinic will be merging with the hospital to form a new medical practice, South Central Kansas Clinic, LLC. SC Kansas Clinic includes Dr. Kamran Shahzada, Internal Medicine; Dr. Rhonda Green, Family Medicine; Dr. Eric Thomson, Family Medicine; and Angela Ziegler, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. Under the merger all of the above mentioned providers and their staff will become employees of or contracted with SCKMC. The medical center has been transitioning towards the hospital employed physician model for several months. “It is a big move, however we are probably behind much of the rest of the State in terms of the employment of physicians. We are hopeful that this demonstrates our commitment to the healthcare of the community, and that we are interested in seeing growth and development of primary care services locally,” said Steve Perkins, SCKMC’s CEO. Dr. Thomson will begin seeing patients through SC Kansas Clinic starting June 23rd. Dr. Shahzada, Dr. Green, and Ms. Ziegler are all currently seeing patients, through the Summit Clinic transitioning to SC Kansas Clinic on July 1st. Patients may schedule appointments now with Dr. Thomson or any of the SC Kansas Clinic providers by calling the Summit Clinic at 620-442-4850. SC Kansas Clinic will operate at the location of the current Summit Clinic, 515 N. Summit.

The Pharm Forum with Homer Mah, D.Ph. Summer has just arrived and many Americans will choose to bask in the sun. You and your family should protect themselves from the sun's harmful UV rays to lower the risk of developing skin cancer. More 3.5 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are diagnosed every year and the rate is rising. Keep yourself and others sun safe this summer. Apply approximately one-ounce or about a palmful of sunscreen to your arms, legs, neck, and face. Remember to cover your hands, feet, ears, and underarms as well. Also, reapply sunscren every two hours and more often if sweating or in water. Some things to look for in sunscreen are broad spectrum; greater than SPF 30; water resistant.
