Kevin D. Ramsey began his venture in entrepreneurship in his late teens and went on to own several businesses. However, a discussion with a friend, Harry Edmonds, about developing a construction firm sparked his interest in the construction industry. Alameda Construction Services, Inc. was incorporated in May 1997. The company’s first job was a room addition to Kevin’s mother’s home. Kevin understood that he had to increase his knowledge to continue to grow his business. In 1999, he made the decision to take his life and business to the next level by returning to school. In 2002, Kevin obtained a Masters Degree in Science Construction Management from the University of Southern California. He and his friend, Harry, continued working together until Harry passed away. Kevin is a husband of 14 years and father of 3. He is an active member of Power Christian Center in Carson, California.
CR&A CUSTOM • CARMEN RAD Nominator: USC
Carmen Rad, a garment industry veteran of Puerto Rican descent, started CR&A Custom Apparel in 1993. Over the past 19 years the company grew from only 2 people working out of her home to over 30 employees and into a 24,000 square foot building. They began producing custom embroidery work and promotional items and have transitioned to primarily a large-format digital printing company serving some of the same clients from 1993 as well as large corporations, such as AEG, Union Bank, Disney, Coors and the Coca-Cola Company. CR&A is a full-service large digital print production and visual display company that produces and installs indoor and outdoor banners, fleet graphics, window, wall and floor graphics, sports and stadium signage, and all types of trade show graphics and exhibit booths. Carmen and CR&A’s success is reflected through the diversity of clients they work with, the support they have acquired with financial institutions, and the many awards that have been won over the years with a wide variety of prestigious organizations.

Diego & Son Printing is celebrating 40 years in business this year! Diego Aguilera, along with his wife Betty, opened their doors in 1972 as a community-minded printing business based in San Diego. They wanted to be the place where people could get quality printing at reasonable prices. With their 3 children, 2 loyal employees and the drive to succeed, Diego hit the pavement looking for clients. His vibrant personality was infectious and the business soon began to thrive. As the business continued to grow, so did their children and soon the oldest, Nicholas, and the youngest, Rebecca, took over running the family business. They work together to keep up with the latest technology for both offset and digital printing. Nicholas is head of Operations while Rebecca handles Sales and Marketing. Diego & Son is now considered one of San Diego’s 15 largest printing businesses. They have been environmentally friendly since 2001 and are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. Nominator: American Honda Motor Co.; Hilton Worldwide Walter Hill, Jr. is president and chief executive officer of Icon Blue, Inc., a brand-marketing company based in Los Angeles, California. Recognizing an opportunity in the promotional product industry, Mr. Hill established Icon Blue, Inc. in 1998. In its first year of operations, Icon Blue was recognized as the African American Business of the Year in Los Angeles. More recently, Mr. Hill’s firm was recognized by Toyota, American Honda and Macy’s as Small Business of the Year. In April of 2007 Icon Blue received the Northern California Supplier Development Council’s Supplier of the Year Award, having been nominated by Macy’s and Kaiser Permanente. In 2008 Icon Blue received Supplier of the Year honors from the Southern California Minority Supplier Development Council, nominated by American Honda. Fernando Real has been in the maintenance industry for 44 years as of June 1, 2012. He graduated from the University of Santa Clara in 1976 with a Business Degree in Finance and began a career in the maintenance industry his senior year. Fernando has been married for 34 years and has 4 children and 2 grandchildren. He is very active with his family and church, and has a competitive passion for team roping, in which he competes and produces events. His goal is to leave a legacy for his children and to be a mentor to anyone who walks through the doors at Professional Building Maintenance.
SUPERBTECH • JAN DAVIS Nominator: USC
SuperbTech, Inc., a 14 year-old staffing firm, specializes in contract and permanent placement staffing services for refinery, utility, governmental, industrial, process, automotive, defense and commercial clients. Its core competency is in the engineering, professional and technical disciplines. Contract staffing services are performed in Texas, California, South Carolina, and Nevada. Permanent placement staffing services are performed nationwide. Both Jan and her company are committed to community work. She is an active Board Member serving on the Special Needs Network board, which provides support and advocacy to underserved families with autistic children and serves as a Finance Committee board member at St. Brigid Catholic Church, by soliciting donations from retailers and dentists to contribute to the Annual Aids Toiletry Drive. From a company standpoint, SuperbTech has committed to making an annual donation to the Playa Sunrise Rotary, Teacher’s Mini Grant since 2006. This program provides grants for special projects, science fairs and trips to public and private elementary, middle, and high schools in the LAX area.

Before founding TEC in 1988, Mr. Coffey managed multi-million-to-billion-dollar projects while at Gilbane Building Company and Fluor Corporation. TEC’s clients list includes Southern California Gas, AEG, Wells Fargo, Kaiser Permanente, Honda, City National Bank, Walt Disney, and Major League Baseball (MLB). In the public sector, clients include CALTRANS, MTA, LAX, and LA Unified School District. Mr. Coffey received his Bachelor’s Degree from Purdue University in Construction Engineering and was elected “Senior of the Year” in the Construction and Engineering Department. Mr. Coffey later pursued MBA studies at Cleveland State University. In 2012 TEC received the City of Los Angeles Mayor’s Minority Contractor of the Year Award. In 2011 Tim received the Boys & Girls Club Smart Futures Award. In 2001, Mr. Coffey and his wife Pamela founded the Crystal Dreams Educational Foundation. The money raised supports scholarships for college students in need. The Foundation also teaches entrepreneurship skills to students and supports the Los Angeles Unified School District programs. Mr. Coffey enjoys working with his family church, playing golf, and traveling with his wife Pam and their three children.

Karim Zaman, President of The Zaman Group has been a successful business owner for over 15 years. The Zaman Group is an owner and Joint Venture Partner with The Hudson Group, the nation’s premier airport retailer, Public Communications Provider and Wholesale Distributor. Mr. Zaman’s major accounts include contracts nationwide and 8 airports including Los Angeles International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Locally, The Zaman Group through it’s wholesale distribution products maintains contracts at the Department of Water and Power, The Los Angeles County Sheriff Department, Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation, Los Angeles County Health Services and Los Angeles County Fire Department. Recognized in the minority business community, The Zaman Group was featured on the Emmy Award winning television show, “Making It, Minority Business Success Stories.” The Zaman Group was the first company selected for the nationally acclaimed FAME Renaissance Business Incubator Program. Ray Sanchez, Think Ink founder of Hispanic/Filipino decent, established Think Ink in 2002 at the age of 29. Ray began as an outside sales rep with a print-brokerage firm, but felt he could provide better service to his clients on his own. He established Think Ink with zero working capital and zero backing from any financial institution. All he had were the solid, honest relationships he formed with his clients and vendors. With determination, hard work and honest business practices, Ray began his mission to provide the quality service he had envisioned - the vision and desire to fuel the creative marketing industry by fusing design, print and promotional elements together. Ray’s extensive background in print and advertising has helped drive Think Ink to produce quality projects for companies such as Toyota, Lexus, Scion, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Raytheon, Western Federal Credit Union, New Balance Athletic Shoes, and many more.

William W. Rose founded DATROSE in 1976, in Webster, New York as a data entry company. William Rose's vision for DATROSE has been to maintain the company's reputation for quality service by empowering each employee to continually strive to exceed each customer's expectation. William Rose served in the United States Air Force, graduated from Monroe Community College, Rochester Business Institute and also attended the Business Executive Program at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. William Rose launched his career in 1963 by helping to pioneer the automation of computer student applications while employed at the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). His passion for quality and creating customer delight were evident even then, and his dedication to these values has never changed.
DIVERSE STAFFING SOLUTIONS • FRED FLORES Nominator: American Honda Motor Co.
Morals, values and work ethic have inspired Fred Flores to lead Diverse Staffing Solutions (DSS) into the 21st Century. The most important factors in Fred’s life are health, family and work. His philosophy is simple: one needs good health to provide and care for family; and without work, it is extremely difficult to financially support one’s family. This philosophy enhanced Fred’s interest in the human resources field. In 2000, Fred founded DSS and it quickly grew to a multi-million dollar company, at times employing over 3,500 individuals. In 2006 Maria Esperanza Thompson founded Agile Sourcing Partners, an integrated supply company serving the largest gas and electric utilities in the country. Prior to founding Agile, Maria worked at Sempra Energy Utilities where she started out procuring MRO equipment and supplies and advanced to negotiate strategic contracts for electric and gas distribution and transmission construction contracts and KPIs, training and strategic sourcing for the department. Maria is an active member of the University of San Diego’s Supply Chain Management Institutes Board of Directors. Maria holds a bachelors degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara and an international MBA from the University of San Diego.
PRIME WHEEL CORPORATION • HENRY CHEN Nominator: Toyota
Henry Chen founded Prime Wheel Corporation in 1989 and continues to oversee the company’s day-to-day operations, as well as Prime Wheel’s long range plans. Henry is actively involved in all facets of the business, from negotiating the purchase price for raw materials to making sure customer’s expectations are met each and every day. Henry’s career began in the 1960s where he worked for Appliance Wheel. Then in the early 80s, Henry founded Golden Wheel, where he distributed aluminum wheels across the North American continent with great success.
