DICK MORRIS CHEVROLET 2199 Haggerty Road, Commerce 248-624-4500 For more than four decades, the lakes area has been served by the staff at Dick Morris Chevrolet. Offering incredible deals on new and pre-owned vehicles, the family-owned dealership is honored to provide customer service and give back to the community. General Manager Rick Morris enjoys keeping those family traditions going in a tough economy. "Transportation is a need that people have," he said. "While a car can be luxurious, keeping your car running or getting a car when you need one is not a luxury — it's a need." So with the local economy being hit hard and lakes area residents needing to get more out of their hard-earned dollars, Rick Morris and his staff work hard to understand each customer and meet those needs. "People need a keep a car running longer these days," he said. "Or they need a new or pre-owned car, so we are figuring out ways to help our customers." The economy has brought more of a focus to pre-owned and certified preowned vehicles at Dick Morris Chevrolet. And you'll find a wide variety of makes and models at the dealership. "Two years ago if you visited our lot you would have found our pre-owned inventory was about 80 to 90 percent General Motors," he said. "The other 10 to 20 percent would be Chrysler, Ford and other vehicles. But now we sell all quality makes of autos from around the world. We've really looked at what people in our market area are driving and wanted to offer vehicles on our lot that matched the needs and preferences of the people." With the dealership growing its preowned inventory, Dick Morris Chevrolet hasn't cut down on its GM models, but increased other brands — including both Asian and European. "On any given day when someone drives through our lot they'll see a wide variety of vehicles from manufacturers from all over the world, from premium brands to non-premium brands," Morris said. "We have budget vehicles to luxury vehicles." Whether you need a minivan, a twodoor sporty coupe, a four-door sedan or

economy car, you'll find a vehicle to fit your budget and need. And while car sales may be the main focus, the maintenance, repair and the body shop at Dick Morris Chevrolet are all busy with a flurry of customers needing its services. And the friendly and knowledgeable staff in each department stands ready to provide the service each customer is looking for. "We service all makes and we have a full collision and paint facility too," Morris said. "For people who have body or paint work needed, we can do that. And for people who are trying to avoid rising insurance premiums, if it's a small job and they want to pay for it themselves, we work with them to make the repair bill something they can handle." But when insurance companies do need to be in the mix, you can relax and know that the staff at Dick Morris Chevrolet will get your vehicle back together and handle the details for you. For customers who may have been hit hard by the economy and have found financing a new or pre-owned vehicle an immovable obstacle, Rick Morris has some good news. "We offer a lot of financing options on our pre-owned vehicles, and these are options we didn't have a year ago," he said. "Due to the recession in Michigan and across the country, a lot of people don't have the ability to finance through a prime lender. So we recognize the need to offer

options to our customers." By offering more financing options, Morris has seen quite a few customers using the options to put a "new" vehicle in their garage. "A lot of good people have been caught up in this economic turmoil and their credit scores have suffered," he said. "But we're able to offer financing solutions to those people." But reaching out to help customers is nothing new to the staff at Dick Morris Chevrolet. The many plaques commemorating events around the dealership recognize its community involvement and sponsorship of area schools, civic clubs and charity organizations. "We enjoy giving back to the lakes area community," Morris said. "It's not something we do for recognition but it's a part of how our family does business. And it's fun to help and be a part of such great organizations in the area." Each Walled Lake school has received various support from the dealership by sponsoring bands and athletic teams. But honoring military members has become one of the dealership's prime outreach programs. "For the four of five weeks around Veterans Day in November, we offer the 'Free Oil Change to Veterans' program," Morris said. "And then about a week after, we publish what we call the Honor Roll of

Gratitude of those incredible men and women who have served our country. It lists the name, rank, branch of service and any conflict they served in. And it's a humbling experience when these men and women come into the dealership to thank us for doing something so small to honor them." Even active military personnel can take part in the annual promotion. Spouses of soldiers who are deployed can take part in the promotion each year. "I understand there is a tremendous strain on active military families to make ends meet," Morris said. "A free oil change can be one more way to help them pay bills while mom or dad are overseas serving America." Dick Morris Chevrolet helps with the "Lest They Be Forgotten" freedom ride put on by the American Legion, which raises money to create memorials in any Michigan hometown where fallen military personnel are from. Another annual event that helps give back to the local community is the selling of Boy Scout Holiday Wreaths. The massive wreaths displayed at the dealership are purchased from local Boy Scout troops. "It's their biggest fund-raiser of the year," he said. Providing great vehicles for lakes area residents and keeping them running while giving back to the local community — that's the successful business plan of Dick Morris Chevrolet. ❏

AMERICAN ALLSTARS ATHLETIC CENTER

3275 Martin Road, Suite 125, Commerce 248-668-9805

Thanks to the overwhelming community support, American Allstars Gymnastics Academy has continued to grow over the past three and a half years from a trusted place for kids to do gymnastics, into a family facility that offers a variety of programs to accommodate everyone. "We have recently changed our name to American Allstars Athletic Center," said owner John Gosselin. "We are now the proud home of American Allstars Gymnastics, Ryukyu Karate, The Edge Fitness Center, and a new kids sports center featuring basketball and a wide variety of other sports." Throughout the years, American Allstars has made a lot of changes based

on its customers' needs, but "the one thing that won't change is our dedication to offering the best customer service possible in a clean and friendly facility," Gosselin said. "When you walk through the doors you will be greeted by name with a hello and a smile. There is always a

member of our staff to answer your questions or to assist you with morning, afternoon, evening, as well as weekend office hours." Another thing you can always count on is that American Allstars is always clean and bright. "We contract with Swisher Hygiene to professionally

clean and sanitize the facility daily." One definite advantage to sending your kids to American Allstars is that they will not only learn great flips, karate kicks, and fitness techniques, but they will also become well rounded young ladies and gentlemen. American Allstars has hired a Ph.D. (Dr. Robyn Silverman) in child character development and they include a Powerful Word of the Month into each lesson during warm up. "Our Powerful Words include confidence, teamwork, appreciation, manners, discipline, and focus; all concepts that parents want their children to demonstrate." Other perks include 24/7 online access to your account, free coffee, free WiFi, an air conditioned facility, professionally trained and certified staff, continuous enrollment, and a flexible summer schedule. MILFORD MONTESSORI SCHOOL 2700 E. Commerce Road, Milford 248-685-7600 Milford Montessori School is celebrating 35 years of educating young children from infants to 12 years in Oakland County. We are excited to celebrate this milestone with a reunion of all past, present and future students on Sunday, June 27, 1 to 5 p.m. Gwynne Olbrich, the founder of Milford Montessori School in 1975, will be flying in from North Carolina to celebrate with Regina Boffi, present owner since 1993. We are looking for students from our early years. Circus Among Us will be helping us celebrate from 2 to 4 p.m. Prospective families are welcome. A Montessori education "prepares children for life," not just the next academic level. All of our teachers are

Regina Boffi, director of the Milford Montessori School, provides a culturally rich environment equipped with the sequential Montessori materials. Montessori Certified, and utilize and practice the philosophy and education methods of Dr. Maria Montessori in a loving and nurturing environment. "As a Montessori school, we cultivate the child's own natural curiosity and desire to learn," says director Regina Boffi. "We provide a culturally rich environment which is equipped with the sequential Montessori materials in addition to multiple 'hands-on' exercises. These

exercises allow the children to learn through the exploration of these materials in the classroom, as well as outside in nature. In any one classroom, you may observe children simultaneously washing dishes, exploring geometry, working a puzzle map, or having a phonics lesson. In the prepared environment they are joyfully doing their 'work' independently, or with a friend, while socializing with each other. The Montessori Philosophy of

'follow the child' allows the child to work at their own pace and move ahead in areas of high interest, while maintaining a steady progress in others. Remaining with the same teacher for two or three years allows for an uninterrupted flow of learning. Children know the 'works' and are comfortable in their classrooms because they know this is a nurturing environment of mutual respect, a place where they can try new things and build confidence." Milford Montessori provides classrooms for Infant, Toddler, Pre-primary, Kindergarten and Elementary grades 1st through 6th. The Infant/Toddler programs have a 1:4 child/teacher ratio, while all other classrooms have a 1:8 ratio. We are a state licensed private school, nursery school and childcare center. "Most of our staff have worked together between 10-30 years, and truly love 'helping children to help themselves,' creating an atmosphere of community, respect, and joy in learning. We have a lot of parent involvement, which helps create a strong sense of family." We encourage you to schedule an observation of a classroom so you can see for yourself the Montessori Difference. ❏

BESTSOURCE CREDIT UNION 269 N. Telegraph, Suite B, Waterford 248-683-4300 Back in 1954, employees of the J.L. Hudson Company thought it was a good idea to help take care of each other and form a credit union. And for the next 50 years they did just that. With low loan rates and better than average saving rates, the credit union took care of its members, who worked at each Hudson's store and each incarnation thereafter. But in 2004, the members decided to reach out beyond the company's employee population and share their great credit union with others. After receiving a community charter that opened up its membership, the credit union changed its name and offered its services to anyone who lives, works or worships within Oakland County. With its mission clearly stated — "To improve members' financial lives" — the renamed BestSource Credit Union continued to provide excellent financial services to its ever-growing roster of members. John Normandeau, CEO, explains that the institution is an important part of the community. "We are looking to help our members get ahead financially," he said. "In these pretty difficult times, we are working with our members, making them car loans, helping them set up saving programs and helping them increase their credit score." And the employees at BestSource aren't looking to push services on unwilling members, but craft and create financial solutions that make sense to each one. "When a member calls in or walks into one of our branches, we are going to ask them questions, so perhaps we can help them in a way they haven't thought of before," Normandeau said. "So we spend time with our members and we help them by asking questions in a non-threatening way. Questions like, 'Where do you do your checking?' or 'I see you don't have a credit card with us, how do you pay your bills?' and 'How do you use your credit card? And do you carry a balance? Do you get charged fees? Do you know what your interest rate is?' Maybe we can help them." Just by simply transferring a balance to

a lower rate BestSource credit card, members can save money. "We have pretty low credit card rates and we might be able to transfer balances and save someone $50 to $100 a month," Normandeau said. "And that's pretty substantial in this economy." The full-service credit union offers a multitude of member services that include typical savings accounts, money markets, IRAs, checking, CDs, and loans for autos, home mortgages, equity loans and credit cards. The credit union also offers business accounts for checking and savings, but doesn't currently offer business loans. "We don't offer business-type loans right now, but we are studying it and if we do offer it, we want to do it correctly," Normandeau said. "Typically we focus on family-type account services, but we do offer merchant services." With its corporate office located in Waterford, the credit union has just opened a new branch to serve more members throughout Oakland County. The West Bloomfield office has opened at 7800 Pontiac Trail. "We are excited about that," Normandeau said. "It's important for us and we've put a lot of thought into expanding. Our members are spread out

throughout southeast Michigan and we could have put a branch just about anywhere, but we saw this area as a great location." As a member of the community, the credit union is involved in community events. "Our focus is to be involved in the community and be a good partner and citizen," Normandeau said. "We help schools and the chamber of commerce and other charitable organizations that tie to our mission and vision." Credit unions differ from banks and other financial institutions in that the credit union members are also the owners. "The members are the owners, so what we are trying to do is help them," Normandeau said. "We're just trying to help people get ahead financially. And our employees are focused on helping people get batter rates and services." Some of their services include the tried and true "Christmas Club" account, where members set aside income and investment dividends can be set aside for use at holiday time. You can open an account with as little as $5 and make scheduled deposits or transfers throughout the year so when Santa Clause starts calling, you are ready to fill stockings and wish lists.

The National Credit Union Association federally insures each of the savings accounts available through BestSource up to $250,000. Your money is safe and secure. One new creative way the credit union is looking out for its members is its "Career Transition Loan." If you've been downsized or lost your job and are thinking of a new career but can't afford the switch, this loan could be for you. Benefits of the loan include a low, fixed rate; flexible terms up to 120 months; no interest for 24 months; no payments required in the first two years of the loan and no prepayment penalties. If you are looking for financial educational materials, take a look at www.bestsourcecu.org to learn more about the credit union, its services and free materials. With everything from managing your checking account to creating a budget, buying a home or automobile, getting married or expecting a baby, to planning for college or retirement, the education offered is a great value. To learn more about BestSource Credit Union, log onto bestsourcecu.org or check them out in person at either branch. You can also call them at 800-666-4500. Take control of your financial life with better rates and services at BestSource Credit Union. ❏

WATERFALL JEWELERS 340 Town Center Boulevard, White Lake 248-698-1200 There is something familiar about the friendly faces at Waterfall Jewelers. For newcomers it is the smile that welcomes them when they first meet the Brown family. Old friends might recognize the family resemblance, recalling their original visit and the service they received from founders Thomas F. Brown Sr., son Tom and daughter Sue. When Waterfall Jewelers opened the doors in 1979, it was the beginning of a vision Tom Sr. had embraced and wanted to share with his family. A vision that has guided this family-owned and operated business and enabled it to thrive and grow through the years. Daughter Chris and husband Joe Strong came into the business in the early 1980s. Brother in-law Larry Ettinger, a retired GM engineer, joined the family group as the store's expert engraver. Mark Ettinger, the store's GIA graduate gemologist, was the beginning of the third generation and is also one of the store's diamond buyers. He has traveled to Antwerp to buy diamonds directly from the diamond capital of the world at direct importer prices. Waterfall Jewelers is a recognized American Gem Society jewelry store with Mark being the registered jeweler and title holder with the prestigious AGS organization. Other grandchildren have become vital parts of the family-owned and operated business. Grandsons Joe Strong and Andrew Brown, who learned the business as young teenagers, joined the family business full-time after college graduation. Granddaughters Jill Berry, Katie and Amanda Shelton complete the family group that has helped the store grow in many positive ways, carrying on the vision taught to them by their parents through the legacy of their grandfather. This third generation has allowed Waterfall Jewelers to keep up with the latest fashion trends, develop a great website, and implement the latest industry technology while never forgetting that there is a person and a personal story behind every sale. But most importantly, it has allowed the family to expand to a second location, opened in early May, located in White

A knowledgeable staff, pride and integrity are the cornerstones of success for Waterfall Jewelers, which has opened a new store in the Village Lakes Shopping Center in White Lake Township. Founder Thomas F. Brown Sr.’s children and grandchildren have joined the business to carry on the family vision and legacy, including becoming personally involved in the community. They donate their time and spirit to schools, youth organizations, and other groups across Oakland County. Not only do they raise money for charity, but they raise awareness about the needs of the community. Lake Township at the Village Lakes Shopping Center. "We are really looking forward to becoming part of the White Lake community," says co-owner and manager Joe Strong. "It's a great area and we have felt so welcomed by everyone!" Waterfall Jewelers has a history of becoming personally involved in its community. They donate their time and spirit to schools, youth organizations, and other groups across Oakland County. They also have an ongoing "Batteries for Charity" Program which asks customers at the store to donate to a specified charity in exchange for free watch batteries, watch

sizings, and other small repairs. "We not only raise money for the charity, but we also raise awareness to the needs of our community," Chris Strong said. Like the original store, Waterfall Jewelers II will feature some of the same outstanding jewelry lines such as Tacori, Simon G, Cheri Dori, Art Carved and Pandora. But they will also carry some different jewelry lines, as well. "Having a second location gives us a unique opportunity to expand the type and style of jewelry that we can offer our customers," says co-owner and manager Andrew Brown.

Like Waterfall I, the new store will have on-site diamond setting, all types of jewelry and watch repairs, engraving, pearl and bead restringing and a staff that will continue the family vision and tradition that has enabled Waterfall Jewelers to transform a business of selling into a business of people. Tom Jr. said that Waterfall Jewelers does business the oldfashioned way — the way their father taught them. "The emphasis here is on service and quality products. A knowledgeable staff, family-owned pride and integrity, and we service what we sell — these are the cornerstones of our success." ❏
