The Knights of Walled Lake Northern aren't going to put up with the things that have plagued the program in the past, according to Head Coach Brett Moore. He said his players made a commitment to off-season work in the weight room in order to get stronger and faster. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)
Knights fed up; set new tone Northern ready to hit field, show new speed and strength ith their football program entering its seventh season, the Walled Lake Northern Knights are making it known that they're tired of being the young upstart in the lakes area, and have been working hard in the off-season and in training camp to set a new tone. "This has been an outstanding senior class that we've gotten," said Northern Head Coach Brett Moore, who is entering his second season. "They've taken some initiative and they're not going to put up with a lot of the things that have been going on and plaguing this program." After a winless 2007, the Knights snapped a 10-game losing streak with a win over Plymouth Salem in the second week of the 2008 season. But,
W
Northern went on to lose its remaining seven games to finish 1-8. When the 2008 season concluded, Northern wasted little time in preparing for this year. "Our first goal in the off-season was to make the weight room a priority for everyone involved," Moore said. "We had a core group of 25 kids that made a commitment to get stronger and faster." When camp opened there was a battle for the starting quarterback job between senior Jason Tucker and junior Adam Freeburg. The winner will run Northern's spread option offense. Last season, Tucker passed for 676 yards and 5 touchdowns. Jasper Brown, a senior, is expected to compete for a running back spot after rushing for 136 yards and three touchdowns in limited action last season. Adam Chuchla, a senior, caught 12 passes and had 11
carries last season and was also in competition for a starting position, along with up-and-coming sophomore Tyler Waske. Anchoring the offensive line will be senior guard Jake Hillenberg and senior tackle Weston Davis. On defense, Northern looks to be strong with senior linebackers Scott Kase, Steven Nicles, and Mitchell Musto; along with senior defensive tackle Andrew Rose. With leadership and a wealth of experience from its seniors, Northern is making it known that mediocrity will no longer be tolerated. "If you were to talk to these kids and if you were to talk to the people who've seen us in our inter-squad scrimmage and 7-on-7's, they'll tell you it's like night and day," Moore said of the difference between this year's team and previous teams. "Last year we handed out 7 Iron Man Awards, which is what we give to kids
with 100 percent attendance and no missed practices. This year we have 52 kids in the running for the award." Northern kicked off the 2009 season at home on Aug. 28 against Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) West Division champion Howell before traveling to Plymouth Salem on Sept. 3. The Knights will then welcome Bogie Lake Road rival Huron Valley Lakeland on Sept. 11. Northern will conclude the regular season at Northville on Oct. 23. "Everybody wants to win and everyone has the will to win, but do people have the time and effort to put in the work to win? That's the difference. They're doing the things to win," Moore said. "I hope everyone picks us last (in the KLAA North), because we're not going to change anyone's opinion until we prove it on the field." â?? — Michael Shelton

Coach Bob Meyer's Walled Lake Central Vikings will be battle-tested in 2009, after fielding a 2008 team with 10 sophomores. According to Meyer, the Vikings are the most experienced team in the KLAA North Division. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)
'The future is now' for Central Experienced Vikes feel confident about KLAA race hen it comes to Walled Lake Central football, the varsity program's head coach believes that the time for rebuilding is done. "Last year, we had 10 sophomores on the varsity team and all of them played," said Bob Meyer, who is entering his fifth season as the Vikings' head coach. "We knew that we would take a beating, but that it would pay dividends in the future. The future is now." Last season's 3-6 finish marked Central's second straight losing year after winning a district championship in 2006; but with most of the players returning from 2008, Central will
W
certainly be battle-tested. Leading Central's Wing-T offense will be quarterback Joe Diamond, who split time with Cory Davis in 2008 and has earned the confidence of his coach and a spot as one of the team's three captains. "(Joe) has a lot of experience under pressure," Meyer said. Behind him will be senior running backs Sam Pearlstein and B.J. Buckner. Seniors Sam Marsh and Frank Albanese will return to help the offensive line create holes. Two players to look out for will be the Kucera twins, Jeremy and Justin, who will each play wide receiver and will wear Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. On defense, junior defensive backs Kyle Clark, Ramon Alexander, and Steven Radd will look to step up after starting as sophomores last season.
While Meyer said he is still trying to figure out his defensive line, he seems to have no problem at the linebacker position. Senior Donald Kril is an all-state wrestler who isn't afraid to mix it up, while James Walker is a 6-foot, 190-pound senior linebacker who has speed to match after standing out on the Vikings' track team this past spring. But, when it comes to speed, Ramon Alexander will be the one to watch on special teams as a kick returner. "He's going to take back a few touchdowns for us because he's fast and elusive," Meyer said. "He's Central's version of Usain Bolt." The Vikings open the 2009 season with two straight road games, at South Lyon (Aug. 28) and Novi (Sep. 3).
"They're two very storied programs and we'll see where we stand after those games," Meyer said. Central will then be tested in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division schedule, including a game at division champion Huron Valley Lakeland (Sept. 17) and a trip to Walled Lake Western (Oct. 9) for a showdown with the Warriors. The Vikings will close out the regular season at home against Wayne Memorial on Oct. 23. "We're the most experienced team in our division so that has to be an advantage, and our kids are confident," Meyer said. "We're confident that we're a playoff football team and we want to get in and do some damage." â?? — Michael Shelton

Sustaining drives, keeping the defense off the field, and shortening games are the Walled Lake Western Warriors' main goals for the 2009 season. Coach Mike Zdebski said the team will remain focused on executing assignments. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)
Warriors in hunt for playoff win Western's gunning for first tournament victory since 2005 alled Lake Western brought home its second straight city championship trophy last season, but now the Warriors are hungry for some state playoff hardware. The Warriors (6-4 in 2008) made their sixth consecutive playoff appearance last year in addition to defeating city rivals Walled Lake Central and Walled Lake Northern; but, Western's 2008 pre-district playoff loss to Dearborn marked the third straight first-round exit in the state tournament. The Warriors' last playoff win came in 2005 and their last district title came
W
in 2001. That's a tune they're hoping to change this season. "The biggest thing that we're going to focus on is making sure that the kids execute their assignments," said Western Head Coach Mike Zdebski, who is entering his 12th season. "We told them if they work hard and execute their individual responsibility, then everything should take care of itself." The Warriors will be led for the forth straight season by senior quarterback Sam Welch, who passed for 860 yards and seven touchdowns and rushed for 957 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. "He's progressing well and developing," Zdebski said. "He may not have 2,000 yards passing, but he's always going to be around 2,000 yards in total offense, because he's a
running and passing threat. He's as good as any kid in the state." The offensive line will be headed up by Pat Farida at center and Adam Darga at left guard, who both saw some playing time last season. Zdebski said at press time that he had a lot of players competing for wide receiver and running back positions in Western's spread offense. "Our goal is to sustain drives, keep the defense off the field, and shorten the game," he said. Running a 4-2-5 defense, Western will lose the services of Edison Vushaj, Zack Gattan, and Brandon Shafou, but will be aided by senior Tyler Watko, who is moving over from the offensive line. Jordan Carreathers, a senior, will be one to watch at inside linebacker,
while senior Andrew Jenkin is a returning starter at outside linebacker. Standing at 6-feet and 290 pounds, senior Marc Sanchez is a defensive tackle that opponents will also find hard to handle. Western opened the season on Aug. 28 by traveling to Flint-Carmen Ainsworth before coming home on Sept. 3 to face Livonia Franklin. The Warriors' Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division schedule includes home matchups against Walled Lake Northern (Sept. 17), Huron Valley Lakeland (Sept. 25), and arch-rival Walled Lake Central (Oct. 9). Western will finish the regular season at Westland John Glenn on Oct. 23. â?? — Michael Shelton

Eagles aiming high in 2009 Lakeland seeing how 'success breeds success' fter making school history by winning its first district playoff football championship last season, Huron Valley Lakeland is aiming higher for 2009. The 2008 season saw the Eagles finish with a 9-3 record, which was capped by winning the first Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division title with an undefeated division record (5-0) and hosting two state playoff games for the first time. What resulted were wins over Auburn Hills Avondale and Birmingham Brother Rice, culminating in a district playoff title celebration. The Eagles would then fall a week later to eventual Division 2 state runner-up Warren DeLaSalle in the regional playoff final. "I think one of the benefits is that the returning players understand what it took to get to that level and they are working to repeat and do similar things," said Lakeland Head Coach John Maltese. "Last year's seniors learned from the class in front of them and that's what we're beginning to see. Success breeds success." Under center for the Eagles at quarterback this season will be senior Eric Kelly, who will take the reins after backing up 2008 KLAA North Offensive Player of the Year Blake Heiman. Behind Kelly will be senior running back Jacob Rhode, a two-year starter who rushed for 262 yards and three touchdowns last season; along with senior fullback P.J. Fricks, who rushed for 288 yards and three touchdowns last year. Eric Palanca, a senior wide receiver, stands at 6-5 and is regarded by Maltese as a fast, explosive, big-play receiver. Heading up the offensive line will be senior center Ben Nicolay, and senior offensive tackles Jacob Schumer (235 pounds) and Scott Larson (240 pounds). Leading the way on defense for the Eagles will be senior inside linebacker Mike Rizzo, who recorded 43 total tackles last season and is regarded as one of Lakeland's team leaders. Rizzo will also play on the offensive squad at tight end. Rhode, Palanca, and Kelly will also see time as defensive backs, along with senior Alex Chuldzinski, who recorded 30 total tackles last season.

Lakeland Coach John Maltese said his returning players learned last year what it takes to advance in the state playoffs, and the coaching staff sees that being passed along to this year's underclassmen. The Eagles will be tested early by "a very brutal schedule," according to Maltese. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard) The defensive line will also see Schumer, Larson and Nicolay play roles as linemen, while Fricks will also play at linebacker. The Eagles prepared for the regular season by playing scrimmages against teams including St. Clair Shores Lakeshore, Fraser and Holly. Lakeland will opened up the season at Grand Blanc on Aug. 28, before
returning home to face Canton on Sept. 3. The Eagles will then play KLAA North contests against the Walled Lake and Waterford schools before hosting a crossover game against a KLAA West opponent. The Eagles' regular season finale is the annual showdown with rival Huron Valley Milford on Oct. 23. Lakeland has won two straight against the
Mavericks. "We have play one game at a time," Maltese said. "We play a very brutal schedule, especially up front. Grand Blanc has some tremendously skilled kids and a great program out there, and then we follow up at Canton. "Our team unity is an asset, but we need to work on consistency," he said. â?? — Michael Shelton

The Milford Mavericks have done what Head Coach Jeff Hill and his staff have asked of them in practices, accomplishing team goals in an efficient and timely manner. Hill said the team is looking to be competitive each week and win the league race. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)
Mavs raise their expectations Hill sees lines as being strengths for Milford in 2009 he first year of the Jeff Hill era at Huron Valley Milford resulted in the Mavericks returning to the playoffs after a year's absence. Now the Mavs are working to take the next step in 2009. Milford qualified for the state tournament in 2008 by sneaking in with a 5-4 regular season record. "Every time you go through an experience, it just helps you deal with other situations and helps your team grow," Hill said. "We've got a lot of kids who got a taste of the playoffs and we have kids that are working hard to get back there. They're doing everything we asked them to do (in practice) and I
T
think we've gotten everything we wanted done in an efficient, timely manner." According to Hill, the Mavs' strength this season will be in their offensive and defensive lines. Leading the way will be John Westfall, a 6-foot-4-inch, 280-pound, two-year starter on the offensive and defensive line who moves "real well," according to Hill. With the departure of James Cote, joining Westfall on the offensive line will be senior lineman Tyler Mecsey, who started on the defensive line and also played at tight end last year before switching to offensive tackle this season. Rob Hamilton, a senior, will also be a staple on the offensive and defensive lines. Expected to start at quarterback
and lead Milford's spread offense is junior Luke Johnson, who missed most of his junior varsity season last year with an radius injury, but has come back strong and has been hard at work in the off-season. "He's a dedicated quarterback who works on technique and watching film. He's a coachable kid," Hill said. Behind Johnson will be senior running back Cody Beck, who started near the end of the 2008 season. Hill said that the Mavs have an abundance of wide receivers that he's still trying to sift through. Milford's 4-3 defense will see Westfall, Mecsey, and Hamilton on the defensive line along with senior Wayne Curran. Junior defensive back Joe Miller, who was a starter last season, will also see time as a wide receiver this year.
Milford will opens the 2009 season with a two-game homestand against Novi (Aug. 28) and South Lyon (Sept. 3) before opening KLAA West play on the road against Howell (Sept. 11), the defending division champion and the team that defeated the Mavs twice last season, including in the pre-district round of the state playoffs. On Oct. 9, the Mavs will also travel to face Grand Blanc, a school that joins the KLAA West this season. Milford will finish the regular season on Oct. 23 at home against rival Huron Valley Lakeland. The Eagles shut out Milford 21-0 last season. "Our expectations are that we're looking to be competitive on Friday nights, win our league, and make the playoffs," Hill said. â?? — Michael Shelton

Captains ready to turn corner Kettering looks to move beyond familiar 4-5 record he Waterford Kettering Captains finished on the fringe of the .500 mark the last two seasons, and now look to improve upon that trend in 2009. "These kids have been going through the program now and have a good grasp of what they're doing," said Head Coach Matt Topie. "They're really confident. They've had some success at the lower level and I think that's going to help us turn the corner." The Captains finished at 4-5 in 2008, marking the third time in four years they have finished with that exact same record. Kettering also ended a two-game losing streak to rival Waterford Mott by defeating the Corsairs on their field last season. Now the Captains will have 12 starters returning for 2009, including senior quarterback Ryan Dingman, who took over for the injured Kevin Truitt in Week 6 last year and finished out the season. Helping to protect him on the offensive line will be 6-5, 285-pound lineman Tyler Bedgood, who will be a four-year starter this season. Also expected to join him up front in Kettering's Wing-T offense will be senior lineman Adam Lotz, who stands at 6-3 and weighs 315 pounds, and junior Mike O'Brian, who has been named a team captain. Paul Fry, a senior, and Andrew Micovich, a junior, will get some carries at running back, while sophomore Josh Cody is also looking to earn some time at running back. Senior Brandon Clingan will play at fullback. Kettering will also look to returning wide receivers Dequante Humphrey, a junior, and Rod Cumming, a senior, along with tight ends Kendall Smith and Josh Blowers for some big catches. The Captains' 5-2 defensive scheme will be led by Blowers, a senior and three-year starter at linebacker who will also be Kettering's place-kicker. He will be joined by Fry and senior Chad Piotrovsky at cornerback, junior Brandon Farrare at free safety, and senior Dylan Arthur at strong safety. Heading up the defensive line will be seniors Brandon Welch and David

With 12 returning starters and a new level of confidence, the Captains of Waterford Kettering are looking to improve upon the 4-5 record posted in three of the last four seasons. Topie said sophomore Brent Mortimore and junior Tony Flores are competing for a linebacker opening. The Captains started the 2009 season on the road at Wayne Memorial

Waterford Mott Head Coach Ken Schmidt said the key to a turnaround this year will be cutting down on penalties, which plagued the Corsairs last season. Schmidt said his players have worked hard during the off-season to cut down on mistakes and penalties. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)
Corsairs can't abide the slide Mott hopes to erase let down of the 2008 season 2008 campaign in which they finished 4-5 and missed the state playoffs after two consecutive appearances has the Waterford Mott Corsairs hoping to reverse that disappointing trend with a strong 2009 season. The Corsairs started last season by winning their first two games, but suffered a two-game losing streak to start Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division play, including a loss to arch-rival Waterford Kettering. Another two-game losing streak to Hartland and Grand Blanc at the end
A
of the season completed Mott's first losing season since 2005. Head Coach Ken Schmidt said the key to a turnaround this year will be cutting down on penalties, which plagued the Corsairs last season. "We had nine touchdowns called back last year because of a holding call, or a block in the back or a personal foul," he said. "We've been working in the off-season on cutting down on mistakes and penalties. Our team speed is outstanding and we have some new transfers." At press time, there was a competition for the starting quarterback spot to run Mott's tripleoption offense. Seniors Darren Goodman and Jajuan Marks, a transfer from Westland John Glenn, were competing for the job.
Looking to carry the rock for Mott are senior running backs Mike Kellam and Jeff Hudson, along with junior De'arius Glover. Also returning in 2009 will be senior Jake Wardach at tight end and outside linebacker. He suffered a broken leg in Week 4 last season and was out for the rest of 2008, but is back for his third year as a starter. Joining Wardach on Mott's Pressure-8, 4-4 defense will be Hudson, himself a returning starter at inside linebacker; along with a newcomer, junior inside linebacker Mike Williams, who transferred to Mott after Pontiac Northern merged with Pontiac Central. Also expected to contribute is defensive end Emanuel Simpson, who played in the final five games of last
season; Kellam at cornerback; and Goodman at safety. Mott opens the season with three games at home, including contests against Westland John Glenn (Aug. 27), Wayne Memorial (Sep. 3), and Walled Lake Western in the KLAA North opener (Sep. 11). Then Mott will travel across town on the afternoon of Sept. 19 for the annual grudge match against Kettering. The Corsairs will wrap up the regular season by taking a road trip west to Jackson to face the Vikings on Oct. 23. "Our guys improved in the area of teamwork and assignment football and I expect that to continue during the season," Schmidt said. â?? — Michael Shelton

Our Lady Head Coach Mike Boyd said his Lakers have to get stronger, after being manhandled in almost all of the team's five losses during 2008. While the Lakers' team speed has improved this year, Boyd said he has only a few players weighing over 200 pounds. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)
Our Lady has speed, lacks size Boyd says Lakers have to play better than last season aterford Our Lady of the Lakes qualified for its 12th consecutive state playoff berth last season on a wing and a prayer, but the Lakers are now hoping to leave no doubts this year. Our Lady finished the 2008 regular season at 5-4, but still squeaked into the state tournament based on playoff points in the last week of the season, and went on to defeat Peck in the pre-district round before falling to Deckerville in the district final to finish at 6-5. This happened despite the Lakers giving up an average of 34 points in five losses last season and also being shut out twice, something that must change this year, according to Head Coach
W
Mike Boyd, who is entering his 44th season as a head coach. "Last year, in almost every one of our games that we got beat, we were just manhandled and we're just going to have to get stronger," Boyd said. The Lakers also will have to get used to life without state all-star L.J. Stolarski, who graduated last spring. "He ran, passed, kicked, punted, caught — you name it, he did it, and I think the kids, in a sense, took him for granted and relied on him too much. Everyone has to work together on the same page," Boyd said. At the helm of Our Lady's offense this season will be junior quarterback Mike Sullivan, who saw some playing time last year. He will have a slew of running backs behind him, including juniors Anthony Caizzio and RJ Buelter, along with sophomore Kevin Mooney
and senior Adam Beans. The "bulk" of the offensive line, according to Boyd, will be the senior trio of Nick Burnham, Mike Schiano, and Shawn Mersino. On defense, senior John Kroll (linebacker) and junior Mason Roy (secondary) are expected to return, along with senior defensive end Paul Goeddeke. Boyd also said that Buelter, Burnham and Austin Karbowski will see time at defensive back, while Schiano and Mersino will also play on the defensive squad. However, the Lakers' inexperience in the secondary is something they will have to overcome, as well as a lack of size. "We're not big by any means," Boyd said. "We still only have a few guys that go over the 200-pound mark. "I think we've got a little more
team speed than we had last year," he said. "We're about in the same boat as far as experience." Our Lady opened the 2009 season on Aug. 28 by traveling to Alma College to take on Suttons Bay from the Northwest Conference. The Lakers will then play three straight home games against Detroit Allen Academy (Sept. 5), Cardinal Mooney (Sept. 12) and Riverview Gabriel Richard (Sept. 19). Our Lady will then play on the road against Catholic League foes Allen Park Cabrini (Sept. 26) and the defending Catholic League C-D champion Royal Oak Shrine (Oct. 4). "So far the kids have had a great attitude, and they've been working hard," Boyd said. "We're just going to have to play better than we did last year." ❏ — Michael Shelton

A determined and committed group of seniors has opened the eyes of younger players about the importance of hard work and jumping off to a strong start this season, according to St. Mary's Head Coach George Porritt. He said the Eaglets' tough schedule will require the team to be ready to play from start to finish. (Spinal Column Newsweekly photo/Amy K. Lockard)
Eaglets intend to rebound St. Mary's needs better start, more consistency in '09 rchard Lake St. Mary's is looking to return to state prominence this season, after seeing its string of five consecutive state playoff appearances snapped last year. One year after just falling short in the Division 3 state title game, the Eaglets finished with a 4-5 record in 2008, marking the first time the Eaglets finished below the .500 mark since the team's 2002 season in which they finished 3-6. This year, the Eaglets will take to the field with a determined senior class, including a couple of Division 1 college prospects. "They've worked hard in the
O
offseason, and made a big commitment," said St. Mary's Head Coach George Porritt, who is entering his 21st season of leading the Eaglets. "Our seniors have done a great job of leadership in the weight room and all our conditioning. I think that woke up some eyes and the kids just want to jump out to a better start this year." Leading the way will be senior quarterback Robert Bolden, who has committed to Penn State and is regarded as one of the top quarterbacks in Michigan. He passed for 951 yards and seven touchdowns last season. "I think he's matured as a quarterback and a team leader, and I think he expects so much out of himself. That's a big plus," Porritt said. He added that he expects senior linemen Mike Padula, Joe Kowalski,
Chris Elliot, Phil Brimer, and Phillip Schoos to be leaders on the offensive line. While Porritt is still sorting out his running backs, he said he expects Nick Larson to be an outstanding receiver in the Eaglets' double-wing spread offense. The St. Mary's defense will be helmed by senior safety Earnest Thomas, who has committed to UCLA. Joining him will be returning defensive starters Justin Ruby at defensive tackle and Gary Hunter at defensive back. The Eaglets will be changing their defensive scheme after running a 4-4 defense last season. For the second straight year, St. Mary's opened the season by traveling west to face three-time defending Division 3 state champion
East Grand Rapids on Aug. 27. The Eaglets then return home to host a game against Highland Park (Sept. 4) and their homecoming contest against Division 2 state runner-up and defending Catholic League A-B champion Warren DeLaSalle (Sept. 19). St. Mary's also will face Novi Detroit Catholic Central on the road on Oct. 4 and host Birmingham Brother Rice on Oct. 10. "I just think our schedule is so difficult, you have to be ready," Porritt said. "With the teams we play, you have to come to play. You could be a great team and still be the odd man out and I thought that's what happened to us last year. This year, it's important that we get off to a good start, stick together, show great leadership, and play hard all the time." â?? — Michael Shelton

West Bloomfield on a 'mission' Lakers set on being an upper echelon team ast season West Bloomfield started with a 2-3 record before stunning the lakes area by winning its final four games and earning a state playoff berth for the first time since 2000. So what do the Lakers do for an encore? "Our theme is 'Complete the Mission,'" said West Bloomfield Head Coach Jim Thomas. "We're in the polishup mode: We've proven we can play with people, so let's go ahead and take it up another level to be an upper echelon team year in and year out and eventually bring a state championship here." Entering his third season, Thomas and his staff appear to have a foundation set to help make state playoff appearances an annual

occurrence for the Lakers. Last season, West Bloomfield fell to Livonia Stevenson in the predistrict playoff round and finished with a record of 6-4. As of press time, Thomas said there was an ongoing duel for the starting quarterback job between senior Josh Levine and junior Phil Brown. There's no uncertainty about senior Cameron Fields playing at the running back position. Fields is someone Thomas regards as one of the top-rated players in the state. "He's a threat to go all the way every time he gets the ball," Thomas said. "We may even use him at quarterback in the Wildcat (formation)." Vince Simpson, a 6-foot, 190-pound senior, is also expected to get some carries this season. The receiving corps will be lead by seniors Aaron White and Aaron
Foster, along with senior tight end Lawrence Brown. The Lakers' defense will be driven by a group of linebackers that Thomas said will be one of the best in the state. Leading the charge will be senior Chris Heald, who had already made a name for himself as a wrestler for West Bloomfield. Thomas said he believes Heald has all-state potential. Head will be joined by another Division 1 prospect in Foster at cornerback and safety. "We're going to be just as good quality-wise, we just won't have as much depth," Thomas said. West Bloomfield will once again be tested this season in the Oakland Activities Association (OAA) Red Division by foes including Troy, Clarkston, and Lake Orion, the defending OAA Red Division champion and last season's Division 1 state runner-up.
The Lakers lost their four games last year by an average of 6 points, including double-overtime losses to Clarkston and Troy. West Bloomfield opened the season on Aug. 27 at Birmingham Groves. The home opener is scheduled for Sept. 3 against Lake Orion. The rematch against Clarkston is at West Bloomfield on Sept. 17, followed by the road matchup at Troy on Sept. 25. "We feel we can do as well as we did last year," Thomas said. "Now that our kids know that we can play with these programs, we're not going to be going out there thinking we're going to lose. "As long as we can hold off on injuries, then we'll be OK, because there's some teams that either beat us or came close to beating us that use the same kids the whole game," he said. â?? — Michael Shelton
