Hypatia was a Greek scholar from Alexandria, Egypt
Her father Theon, a famous mathematician and philosopher was her teacher.
Hypatia wrote on maths, philosophy and astronomy. She invented scientific instruments, including an astrolabe (navigational instrument) and a hydrometer (instrument for determining the specific gravity of liquids).
Hypatia was killed by a mob of fanatic Christians. They thought she was a pagan and was teching paganism under the cover of mathematics and science.
Hypatia’s works were destroyed when the Arabs burnt the library of Alexandria, using the books as fuel for their baths.
