…to SCO Connect’s Lifelong Learning programme 2010/11. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra is the nation’s chamber orchestra, and here at SCO Connect we want to provide opportunities for anybody in Scotland to get closer to the music. If you play an instrument you can meet the players, find out some tricks of the trade, and experience the feeling of sitting in an orchestra and working with professional conductors through Scrapers & Tooters. If you’d like a chance to sing on the Usher Hall stage alongside the SCO, join our community choir which will perform Edward Harper’s The Voice of a City. Conducted by new SCO Chorusmaster Gregory Batsleer, this is a wonderful opportunity to be part of a professional performance. How about having a chat about the music you can hear in concerts throughout the season? Join us for a drink and a blether in our discussion groups taking place in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Comparing Notes is a popular way to learn more, have a natter and meet fellow audience members. Whether it’s composing your own music, learning from worldrenowned academics, or listening to composers discussing their music in pre-concert talks, there are plenty of ways to get involved. If you’ve taken part before, welcome back! If it’s your first time, we look forward to meeting you.

Scrapers & Tooters
SCO Connect has a busy season of Scrapers & Tooters events this year, from wind orchestra to chorus weekends. S&T is a great opportunity for amateur musicians to get together for non-pressurised weekends of music-making. We have three S&T events happening this season: Scrapers & Tooters StAFCO orchestral weekend in St Andrews Wind Farm Wind orchestra weekend in Aberdeen Operantics Orchestra & chorus weekend in Edinburgh You will rehearse as part of a full orchestra / wind orchestra / chorus, work with a professional conductor, and receive sectional coaching from Scottish Chamber Orchestra musicians. For all our weekends, some scraping, tooting or singing experience is required but previous knowledge of the music is not necessary. If you would like to know more about Scrapers & Tooters, or for details of how to book, please contact us at SCO Connect (see page 19). Places are allocated through a draw system. Participants register their name, and any instrument places which are in high demand will be allocated by a lucky dip draw. Participants are offered the chance to buy reduced price tickets for a concert linked to each S&T weekend. You will receive more information about the offer after booking your place on S&T.

Wind Farm is an opportunity for amateur musicians to play as part of a wind orchestra. Wind, brass and percussion players will spend the weekend rehearsing under a professional conductor, with SCO musicians on hand for sectional coaching and to give hints and tips! The weekend ends with an opportunity to show off all your hard work to friends and family with an informal performance. Craig Anderson is an award-winning tuba soloist and freelance player with a wealth of experience that has seen him play with numerous leading orchestras and ensembles. Craig plays regularly with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Northern Sinfonia, and conducts wind and brass bands throughout Scotland. He is currently musical director of Campbeltown Brass and Kingdom Brass.

Operantics invites both instrumentalists and amateur singers to join us as orchestra and chorus for a weekend of music-making. Friends and family can enjoy your hard work with an informal concert on the Sunday evening. Gregory Batsleer was appointed Chorusmaster of the SCO Chorus at the end of 2009. He is also Director of the Hallé Youth Choir, Co-Founder and Principal Conductor of The Manchester Consort and an Associate Conductor with the Royal Northern College of Music’s Outreach Department. He has worked as Guest Chorusmaster for several performances by the Hallé Choir and last summer he conducted the Hallé Orchestra and over 500 singers in Nottingham for a ‘Come and Sing’ performance.

St Andrews & Fife Community Orchestra SCO Connect and the University of St Andrews are forming a brand new community orchestra for St Andrews and Fife. Open to anyone aged 16 or over, regardless of previous musical experience, this new orchestra will meet on a weekly basis to explore orchestral repertoire in a relaxed, sociable environment. The Orchestra will be conducted by Jill Craig along with members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra who will lead sectionals and perform as soloists with the Orchestra. The sessions will be fun but focused and allow people of all abilities to work together.
Come and Play Weekend A taster session open to players aged 16 or over of any orchestral instrument, the Come and Play weekend is a chance to find out whether this is for you. You can meet new people including Jill and SCO musicians, and play on the stage of the Younger Hall. StAFCO will meet weekly and the emphasis is on making music and having fun! There are no auditions and all players are welcome, from adult learners to advanced musicians, and those who haven’t played for years. The music will include pieces performed by the SCO in its concert visits to the Younger Hall. There will be a concert at the end of the first year to show off everyone’s hard work, but mainly the idea is to meet up, play and have fun. Rehearsals StAFCO will rehearse on Wednesday evenings at the Younger Hall during term time starting 13 October 2010. The Orchestra will have five weeks off during the year when, instead of rehearsing, the members are encouraged to go to the SCO concert where there will be opportunities to meet players and attend a special StAFCO reception. Booking info To join StAFCO there is a one-off fee of £45 (£35 concessions, £25 students) to join the St Andrews Music Centre. As well as joining the Orchestra you’ll receive a range of other benefits including: • Free use of practice rooms and upright pianos in the Younger Hall and elsewhere around the University • Free loan of instruments (subject to availability) • The opportunity to sign up for instrumental or vocal tuition

A chance for an in-depth look at some of the music featured in the SCO Season, led by world-renowned experts.
SCO Connect is thrilled to welcome David Cairns to discuss Mozart and his operas, focussing on Don Giovanni – the landmark concert which opens the 2010/11 Season. This day will be a chance to meet and learn from the author of Mozart and His Operas.
The cost is £25 including refreshments and a complimentary programme for the linked concert.

SCO Connect and Open Studies at the University of Edinburgh have teamed up to provide two evening courses this Season, led by composer Jennifer Martin (see page 14). Both courses will guide you through music performed in the SCO Season and introduce you to the world of the SCO, with player visits, concert trips and an opportunity to meet Principal Conductor, Robin Ticciati.
Exploring Music I: This ten-session course is a general introduction and no previous knowledge is necessary.
Exploring Music II: This ten-session course is a more in-depth course ideal for those who have taken part in Exploring Music I, or already have some knowledge of music. It focuses on the works of Stravinsky and will include three concert trips to the Stravinsky: The Chamber Ballets series.

Do you enjoy a good chat about music? Lots of people are enjoying the growing trend for reading groups to share their love of books and we think that there are just as many who would enjoy the opportunity to talk about music and share views with others. Comparing Notes are our informal and in-depth discussion groups based around a series of four concerts. Not only do the groups offer the chance to learn about some of the music before you hear it, but they also give you the opportunity to reflect on the concerts, discuss them and much more in future weeks. Comparing Notes groups are taking place in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. It is free to take part but places are limited. Group Leader Jennifer Martin Jennifer Martin is a composer who has spent nearly 20 years working in music education. Her career began as Composer in Residence at Stewart’s Melville College and The Mary Erskine School, Edinburgh, and teacher of Composition at the City of Edinburgh Music School, while also lecturing in the Animation Department of Edinburgh College of Art, in the Drama Department of Queen Margaret College and within the Music Faculty at the University of Edinburgh, where she taught both Composition and Music in the Community. In 2003, she was appointed Learning Manager for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, where she devised and managed a wide range of educational initiatives, both in Scotland and in relation to international touring. Jennifer has now returned to her freelance career, as a composer, music education consultant and project manager.
Be inspired by works of art in the National Galleries of Scotland Online Collection and write a piece of music for Scottish Chamber Orchestra musicians. Composers of any generation and experience can take part in this competition at www.icompose.org. Full details about categories and a wide range of resources including online tips, instrument guides written by members of the SCO and teaching notes and discussion ideas for schools, can be viewed on www.icompose.org from September 2010. In partnership with Drake Music Scotland, you can also learn about and use Figurenotes©. Developed in Finland, this revolutionary music notation system can be used by children and adults alike to read music, play an instrument and create new tunes, even if you’ve never composed before. Entries in conventional notation are, of course, also welcome.

Come and Sing
Fancy a morning of singing on stage at the Usher Hall? Learn some classics and rekindle your love for music by taking part in SCO Connect’s Come and Sing event on Saturday 25 September 2010. This free event is a great opportunity to sing as part of a choir with SCO Chorusmaster Gregory Batsleer and meet other people. It’s your chance to perform on the Usher Hall stage and see behind the scenes at a world-class concert hall. Repertoire will include popular classics such as Zadok the Priest, and you don’t need to bring anything other than yourself and some enthusiasm. We’ll even provide the pencils! Doors Open Day This event is part of Doors Open Day. Organised by The Cockburn Association, Doors Open Day is your chance to explore some of Edinburgh’s architecturally and culturally significant buildings – all for free. From heritage landmarks to the city’s newest architecture, Doors Open Day offers free access to properties that are either not usually open to the public or would normally charge an entry fee. The Voice of a City
On 5 February 2011 you could be standing on the stage of the Usher Hall as part of a massed chorus of adults and children, about to sing The Voice of a City by composer Edward Harper with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Become part of a chorus of 120 adults and 160 children Take part in the second ever performance of The Voice of a City at the recently refurbished Usher Hall in Edinburgh Perform alongside the SCO and Edinburgh’s City Organist, John Kitchen Rehearse under the guidance of SCO Chorusmaster Gregory Batsleer ..and the best bit? Previous experience of singing in a chorus is not essential! In performing this piece, SCO Connect will bring together voices young and old from across the City of Edinburgh. There will be ten evening rehearsals beginning in November 2010, building up to final rehearsals and a Family Concert performance with the SCO on Saturday 5 February 2011 at the Usher Hall. When I was working with you I had the best time in my life. I just couldn’t believe it when the teacher told us we got picked to work with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
In 2010/11 the Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s Education and Outreach Department is 25 years old. During the past quarter century we have travelled the length and breadth of Scotland making connections with thousands of people. Whether in – Toni, St Mary’s Primary, a schools, residential homes, community centres, concert halls, participant on the Roundabout fields(!), trains or prisons, members of the SCO have brought project in October 2000 music alive and had some fabulous adventures along the way.
