Welcome to the 2014/15 Aberdeen Concert Series
Robin Ticciati: Marco Borggreve
Peter Oundjian Music Director Royal Scottish National Orchestra
Robin Ticciati Principal Conductor Scottish Chamber Orchestra
The Aberdeen Concert Series is a special partnership between two of Scotland’s national orchestras – the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. This joint programme of concerts allows you to create your own tailored concert Season from a wide range of programmes. Subscription packages make the booking process easy while offering outstanding value for the music lovers of Aberdeen. This Season we explore the world of Classical and Romantic piano concertos with some top international artists. Llŷr Williams is obsessed by Beethoven and performs his first two piano concertos. The award-winning Argentine Ingrid Fliter plays Chopin’s Piano Concerto No 1, while the extraordinarily talented Khatia Buniatishvili plays Liszt’s second piano concerto and Christian Ihle Hadland closes the Season with Grieg’s ever-popular concerto. Noted for his fiery performances, French violinist Renaud Capuçon takes on Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, and the RSNO’s Principal Flute Katherine Bryan gives the Scottish premiere of Christopher Rouse’s Flute Concerto. You can also celebrate the Christmas season with Handel’s Messiah and the ever-popular annual concert featuring Howard Blake’s The Snowman. We hope you are intrigued and excited by what is on offer, and we look forward to welcoming you to a magnificent Season of music at the Aberdeen Music Hall with the RSNO and the SCO.

Wagner Overture to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg Rouse Flute Concerto (Scottish Premiere) Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade Peter Oundjian Conductor Katherine Bryan Flute Wagner’s Meistersinger overture creates a whole medieval city in all its sunshine and swagger; the RSNO’s own Katherine Bryan shares an evocative, elegiac concerto by one of America’s most popular living composers; and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade has 1001 tales to tell, in music that’s sensuous, spectacular and fabulously over-the-top. Prepare to have your ears dazzled, as we launch the new Season in a blaze of colour. Pre-concert talk: 6.45pm RSNO Executive Producer, Manus Carey in conversation with Peter Oundjian
Stravinsky Concertino for 12 Instruments Mozart Violin Concerto No 3 Beethoven Piano Concerto No 1 Alexander Janiczek Director / Violin Llŷr Williams Piano Williams and Janiczek bring a wonderful spirit of camaraderie and chamber music to the SCO stage: no surprise as they have appeared as a duo for well over a decade now. They offer two programmes of Beethoven and Mozart this Season (see also 17 January), both including music that the composers wrote for themselves to play. Both concertos are wondrous, youthful masterworks that set out to entertain, move, impress and engage: these were young people on the make! Stravinsky’s Concertino is actually a tiny violin concerto – intimate, detailed and perfectly formed. Pre-concert talk: 6.45pm Llŷr Williams

Stravinsky Concerto in Re Mozart Sinfonia Concertante Mozart Symphony No 31 ‘Paris’ Beethoven Piano Concerto No 2 Alexander Janiczek Director / Violin Llŷr Williams Piano Jane Atkins Viola A tale of four cities here: Paris, Salzburg, Vienna and Hollywood! Stravinsky’s infectiously dance-like concerto was made in the USA but every single punchy, rhythmic bar is inspired by Bach. A pair of sublime Mozart works from 1778-79 offers a snapshot of the young composer in Paris – where his symphony was an immediate hit – and Salzburg where he wrote the sublime Sinfonia Concertante. Mozart himself longed for Vienna, and so did Beethoven as he wrote his first concerto. When he finally arrived, Mozart was both a prospective teacher and his biggest competitor. 08
Schumann Overture, Scherzo and Finale Liszt Piano Concerto No 2 Wagner Siegfried Idyll Schumann Symphony No 1 ‘Spring’ Christoph Altstaedt Conductor Khatia Buniatishvili Piano Robert Schumann’s symphonies are more like love stories. His ‘Spring’ symphony positively bubbles over with happiness – and he couldn’t even bring himself to call his Overture, Scherzo and Finale a symphony at all. Guest conductor Christoph Altstaedt has this music in his blood, and he will bring the same Romantic ardour to Wagner’s tender musical love-letter, and a barnstorming concerto by classical music’s first global megastar: Franz Liszt. Khatia Buniatishvili will make it look easy. Don’t be fooled! Pre-concert talk: 6.45pm RSNO Executive Producer, Manus Carey in conversation with Christoph Altstaedt

Beethoven Violin Concerto Schubert Symphony No 9 ‘Great C major’ Robin Ticciati Conductor Renaud Capuçon Violin Considered one of today’s finest young violinists, Renaud Capuçon is prized for the exceptional strength and poetry of his performances. He joins the SCO for Beethoven’s noble Violin Concerto, with its vivacious finale. Robin Ticciati concludes the evening with the majesty of Schubert’s powerful Ninth Symphony, the ‘Great’, whose boundless heroism is matched only by its effortless melody.
Chopin (orch. Stravinsky) Nocturne in A-flat Op 32 No 2 Chopin Piano Concerto No 1 Mendelssohn Symphony No 4 ‘Italian’ Jun Märkl Conductor Ingrid Fliter Piano No composer captures the soul of the Romantic piano quite like Chopin; and few living pianists play Chopin with more eloquence and truth than Ingrid Fliter. Framing Chopin’s Piano Concerto are Stravinsky’s beautiful 1909 orchestration of Chopin’s Nocturne in A-flat major and Mendelssohn’s exhilarating Symphony No 4 ‘Italian’.

Grieg Piano Concerto Sibelius Nightride and Sunrise Grieg Piano Concerto Nielsen Symphony No 4 ‘The Inextinguishable’ John Storgårds Conductor Christian Ihle Hadland Piano “Music is life” declared Carl Nielsen “and like it, inextinguishable!” He proved it with his tremendous Fourth Symphony – music that leaves you thrilled to be alive. John Storgårds knows exactly how to make it catch fire, but first, he takes us on a bracing sleigh-ride through his native Finland, and introduces the acclaimed young Norwegian pianist Christian Ihle Hadland, in Grieg’s hugely popular Piano Concerto.
